2:00 pm
good evening and welcome to politics nation. tonight, it was the farce before christmas.
2:01 pm
america and millions of federal employees will be able to observe the christmas holiday next week with the comfort of an open government. after congress was barely able to avoid a government shutdown late overnight. but leading up to it was a chaotic congress as the condemnations of billionaire elon musk seemed to carry as much weight with the lawmakers as president-elect dump, if not more. now, after whipping the votes to fund our government over the objections of trump and musk, mike johnson may be just inches away from becoming the next speaker to get axed when congress runs from recess next month to a massive slate of
2:02 pm
problems and another spending fight in just three months. tonight, some are wondering whose hand will truly be at the wheel when that happens? the world's richest man or his future so-called boss? we start the show with nevada attorney general aaron ford. thank you for joining me today. attorney general ford, in the early hours of the morning, the u.s. senate overwhelmingly approved a bill to avert a government shutdown. including government aid for disaster relief. the bill funds the government through march 14th setting up another spending showdown in the early months of the second trump administration. where republicans will control both the senate and the house by very slim margin.
2:03 pm
how could a government shutdown affect your state specifically? >> first of all, thank you for having me again and initiating this conversation. i am pleased we avoided the government shutdown. in no small part due to my friend hakeem jeffries and steven horseburg. we have 12,000 federal employee ins our state that ran the risk of not having a paycheck this holiday season. air force bases, the military bases that could have possibly been affected by the shut-down. so again, i am glad that the democrats came to save the day. i'm proud of hakeem jeffries and proud of the congressional deligation here. >> i wanted to talk to you.
2:04 pm
because he says they have already begun strategizing on how to handle his administration. what is your course of action and what are you concerned the most about? >> well keith is a great friend of mine, we were both elected in 2011 for our respective states. i'm the cochair of the democratic attorney general association on which keith sits as a board member as well. we had been working together for years in anticipation of doing what we do best. defending the rights and privileges of our state. we continue doing what we have always done to ensure the rule of law is that which prevails. i'm not denying that president- elect donald trump didn't win fair and square. but he has the ability to
2:05 pm
implement policies pursuant to his political platform but he has to do it lawfully and if he crosses the line and violates any constitutional rights or lawful rights of a person present in my state, i will meet him in court and i will defeat him in court. we standby the rule of law and that rule of law doesn't change based on who the president is. >> last week you announced nevada's fake elector's case from 2020 had been revived. six nevada republicans that are again being charged with submitting a bogus certificate declaring donald trump the winner of the 2020 president herbal election. you filed a new compliant charging the defendants with the felony of uttering a forged instrument. after the indictment was dismissed, why did you decide to pursue this charge and how
2:06 pm
do you anticipate this to play out? >> well in the first case we filed, we believe we were lawful. we were correct in filing that case in clark county. it was dismiss and we appealed that to the supreme court. we are confident it will be rendered in our favor and we will pursue not just the forgery of charge but the filing of a false document charge in clark county. but we decided we would refile that charge up in carson city so as to ensure that justice prevails. you can ask anyone i work with. they will tell us our job is justice and the definition of justice does not change based on an election. so we will continue to pursue this. notwithstanding the fact that mr. trump is president. i have gotten questioned several times if i will dismiss
2:07 pm
this case. no. the law requires these individuals who violated the law should be prosecuted. >> they filed as electors and actually try today say trump won the state then when he had not. now, let me go to this before i run out of time. you have recently announced plans to run for governor of nevada in 2026. being the first democrat to openly say so. you potentially would be the highest profile democrat to consider challenging the republican incumbent there who plans to run for reelection. what is your pitch to nevada this early on two years in advance? >> well let me be clear first off. i do intend to run for higher office and i'm having conversations with nevadans all across the state to find out what exactly they believe
2:08 pm
nevada needs for its next governor the gubernatorial seat is something that i'm quite interested in and i do believe that i have a lot to offer to make sure everything is taken care of retive to economics and health care. we are looking forward to continuing this conversation. stay tuned reverend. >> no formal announcement by al sharpton formally announced that he will formally announced. thank you. joining me is the sage of capitol hill, congressman jim kleiburn. democrat of south carolina. congress was ultimately able to avert a government shutdown with the last minute vote to keep the government funded for the next three months. president biden just signed that bill earlier today. previous versions of the
2:09 pm
spending bill failed this week after criticisms from president- elect trump and elon musk who has critics questioning just how much power he now has over republican priorities but 170 house republicans voted in favor of funding yesterday. both he and musk have hinted fourth coming primary challenge to those that defied the both of them. so who will be in charge here next month? congressman, is trump in charge or is musk in charge? >> well thank you very much, reverend for having me this evening it's hard to say. i had hoped we would stand with tradition and make sure the president is in charge and the

members of congress as well as the judiciary, the three branches of government will work in tandem to help keep our country moving forward to a more perfect union. if we are going to give up the authority that is invested in us throughout constitution to an unelected person who has selfish motives, then the country is not going to run well and i think we saw that when we saw this attempt to scuttle what had been a bipartisan bill agreed to by all the elected officials and an unelected person injects himself into the process and there goes out the window that
2:11 pm
bipartisan bill. thankfully, 24 hours later, we brought it back together. but if that's what we are going to have during the trump administration, i think the people of america are going to be sorely disappointed with the direction of the country. >> and what is so frightening to me is not only is he not elected, he doesn't lead any kind of interest group or organization. he is just given this prominence because he is rich and he is only rich because under the obama administration he got certain federal contracts that excelled him. now he is leading the fight against dei and other things. it is frightening and how do we look to the rest of the world that all you have to do is be rich and you can tell the government what to do, it's like something you pull strings around. the next republican led congress will begin the year with a massive slate of issues

to contend with and a very narrow majority with which to pass bill. mike johnson reportedly faces an uncertain future and a lack of support from some of his caucus ahead of the next house vote to keep him as speaker or elect a new one. how does this week's drama point to what we can expect in the house next month and next year? >> unfortunately, i think this points to a lot of uncertainty. and a lot of instability. we can say what we want about our system but it is a good system. it has created a great country. and if we put instability uncertainty, into the middle of this system, i'm not sure how it is going to work. i'm not always satisfied with
2:13 pm
the results of the decision by the supreme court or with the collaborations of our legislative bodies but we have had a certain amount of stability that allows us to work together to maybe overcome but if we are going to allow our legislative body to be hijacked by an unelected official with a portfolio that was just given to him, he doesn't seem to understand what government is all about except what he needs to be bailed out. as he was by the obama administration and now he is acting as if nobody is deserving of the attention of the federal government except
2:14 pm
for him. >> as you know, president-elect trump has called for members of the house january 6th probe to be imprisoned and they are calling for former gop congresswoman liz cheney to be investigated by the fbi for her role in that probe claiming in a report released this week by the house administration's oversight committee that cheney violated several federal laws specifically by allegedly tampering with witness and former trump white house aid cassidy hutchinson. her lawyer has called these allegations preposterous and cheney has defended the legality of the probe. what are your thoughts? >> i think whoever is doing this is just sick in the head. we all know that was a duly
2:15 pm
constituted committee headed by our good friend. they did the work. they had a right and responsibility to interview any witness. that is not tampering that is preparing people in order to be coherent when they are going to speak to the american people. i thought they did a great job. i am not happy with the way it has been responded to by members of the legislature. but the fact of the matter is they did what they were responsible for and they did a great job and we need to stop the grand standing.
2:16 pm
i think that's all this is. something looking to make a headline. i don't think it has any kind of legal water in which to float. >> while we still have time, the house ethics committee secretly released this month to release its report into matt gaetz conduct in office. he faced allegations of illegal drug use and sexual activity with a 17-year-old girl. accusations he has denied though they taint his recent nomination by president-elect trump to lead the justice department. neither trump nor speaker johnson wanted the report public. what do you expect to come from its release now and why should we care if the justice department didn't bring charges after its own investigation of gaetz? >> i think we should care.
2:17 pm
because i think the justice department, though i agree with our system, i don't think the justice department moved as swiftly and accurately as they should have moved on a lot of these issues. not just as it relate to gaetz. but also as it relates to donald trump himself. i do believe we are in the quagmire we are in because the justice department was slow to respond and investigate and before you knew it, time had run out. so i believe the ethics committee is doing the right thing to make public everything that they know about this issue and let the american people decide. because gaetz just says he is going to run for office again.
