in just the first weeks of the coming new year, fractured republican caucus will have to vote on a speaker with several massive tests of our government looming on the horizon. among the most urgent, the nation may exhaust its ability to borrow money. and the treasury secretary is warning this weekend we may be flirting with the default in just a few weeks as another spending fight to fund our government is again delayed for barely a few months. the stamp of president-elect trump is on these conflicts on capitol hill. but rather than offer a message of maturity and reassurance over the holiday weekend, the president-elect threatened to buy other countries that are not for sale as he prepares a sweeping purge of undocumented

immigrants here in the u.s. and a lot of his base is angry with his allies elon musk and vivek ramaswamy over their recent comments that the u.s. should remain open to certain immigrants because maga america is not producing enough brains for the tech industry. still, for all of that, on the other side of the aisle is the question of whether democrats, days away from being out of power in washington, can unite around a message and a plan to push back. joining me now congresswoman joyce beatty, running for vice chair of the democratic national committee. congresswoman, thank you for joining us this holiday weekend. congress votes to decide the speaker of the house next week. it could be decided by the slimmer gop majority in modern

history. and congressman mike johnson appears to be in an increasingly untenable position to hold onto the gavel after his role in passing the government funding bill this month. angering some of his caucus who are calling for a new speaker while trump has been silent on the matter. how do you expect your republican colleagues to proceed. >> first of all, thank you for having me on reverend al, they are in a tizzy because they know they can't control as everybody witnessed right before we left congress, almost 40 something of the republicans voted against what the republicans want because they wanted to of course raise the debt ceiling. they are not in alignment with their speaker. we know by the time they got through four days, 15 rounds of votes, democrats were

consistent with hakeem jeffries and they were all over the place. they have that one party vote rule they can vacate the speaker seat so who knows what they are going to do. they are having trouble governing, they are probably waiting on president-elect musk to call trump and tell them what to do. right know they don't know who is running the government. whether it is on our bet ceiling or the unfinished business that we have to do in the upcoming march months. they cannot govern and democrats are on point. when you think of it, 215 democrats aligned with leader hakeem jeffries ready to do the people's work. they're in trouble. >> staying with the debt, janet yellen is warning this weekend that the u.s. could reach its

debt ceiling as soon as january 14th. she is calling on congress to increase or suspend the limit or run the risk of a default once the treasury exhausts its extraordinary measures to pay the government's bills. about three dozen conservative republicans joined house democrats in rejecting trump's demand that the debt ceiling be abolished during this month's spending fight. what are you expecting from your gop colleagues on this issue and how should democrats respond? >> reverend al, i don't think they will move very far. we know that we are sitting at about $36 trillion. we know the debt ceiling has been set at about $31.4 trillion. we know 90 times over the 20th century we have been faced with this issue. it has been suspended until as you mentioned january the 2nd.

i think that we will do what we can do best to protect the american citizens. they are thinking about billionaires. he is even suggesting the name of a south carolina billionaire to take janet yellen's place. we will stand firm and we will do what's best for debt ceiling. >> earlier this month, your caucus elected virginia congressman gerry connelly. disappointing those who wanted alexandria ocasio-cortez. connelly is 74. ocasio-cortez is 35. and a rising progressive star. the party is still debating on whether it needs to get

younger, more centrist or liberal or if it should work with the next administration or fight it. as you vie for the dnc vice chair and we know the dnc has to deal with where it goes from here. i was in chicago the night of christmas and a lot of people want to see congressman jonathan jackson run for chair. where do you see the future of the party going as you run for vice chair? >> i think you need a combination. whether it is the dnc and yes, i'm running for dnc vice chair of civic engagement. i think while we have great candidates i have an unmatched record. being in the state house as the first democratic female to deliver the majority. marching with you and other

civil rights leaders. putting together civic participation and engagement. when you look at what we just did, we picked the best bid. aoc did a great job. we elected a lot of younger people over some of our senior but you can't have everyone to be young or senior. it's the combination, it's the experience we have to remember and making sure you do the other things, do you support other members and pay your dues? so when i looked at it overall, i made sure that we voted for a person that met all of those standards, not just one. i think the dnc will be on a great foot.

we have to lot to build on, but we need new ideas and people who are open to galvanizing and mobilizing everybody. not just one sector of the democratic party and you will see that with leader hakeem jeffries in congress and with the next slate of dnc officers and i plan to put my best foot forward because i do have a platform and that's what we are running on, a platform of change and consistency and doing what you have talked about and jesse jackson and some of the younger folks who are on the ground. a plan that brought black men, white women, lbgpt on a call telling everybody to get out and vote so i want to bring a lot of that to the table with the dnc and be able to travel the country as i have done in

the past and as one of harris' folks. >> i want to talk to you about that, the dnc race. as you stated you chaired the congressional black caucus. you worked with all of us in the civil rights community closely and the black vote was central to the democrats. you have some claiming identity politics cost the party all three branches and those who say democrats didn't embrace diversity enough, both sides are being argued. what should the party's approach be moving forward in your view? >> i think we have to make sure we clear that up with our messaging. we need a platform with those individuals from the top down officers who are pledging they will be inclusive. to make sure people do not abandon diversity and equity. we haven't a party that is one

sided. that is not just race, gender, and ethnicity. it is demographics and i plan to be a partened will work with anybody that won't vote out people. it is not just people leading but those following. those on the ground and people like yourself, reverend al, the civil rights leaders who don't have a vote. we can't leave them outside. we can't be afraid to embrace those who are governors, mayors, members of congress and city leaders. if you are going to get this right, and we have four years to do it, we better have a plan that doesn't leave anybody behind. a plan that a person could come in ready to go with a track record of successfully leading and mobilizing. it's not just a title. it's what you have delivered and what you have done and i believe i have worked with all

groups. ground leaders, civil rights leaders, to make a difference. that's what i will bring to the table. >> out of time, but before i á you go, i want to get your comment on the disturbing death of the new york state inmate robert brooks whose beating by a state correctional officer earlier this month was captured on body cam footage released this weekend by the new york attorney general. i warn the audience the footage is violent. showing officers punching and kicking brooks while he is handcuffed to a prison bed. brooks died in the hospital the next day. james and the governor kathy hochul and state correction officials have taken action. 14 worker haves been fired. the state correctional officer's union has condemned the attack. what are your thoughts on this

tragedy? what are your thoughts congresswoman as you see these continuing things? >> reverend al, i joined all of them. this was one of the hardest i have had to watch. something laying there on a metal hospital bed being beaten and subsequently to die. too bad we can't legislate civility and intelligence. but we passed a bill on accountability. what i am saying whether it is the body cameras or putting more cameras around to protect those who are protecting those who are guarding them. we need more accountability and we have to make a point that those people are held accountable. no pat on the back. this man lost his life. 40 something years old. he deserved better treatment.

it is. but that is his style. i think it is dangerous. >> earlier today, the russian president vladimir putin apologized the azerbaijan for the attack that killed 38 people in kazakhstan though he did not take responsibility. they are claiming it was attacked by ukrainian drones two u.s. military officials said they had intelligence indicating russians may have misidentified the plane and shut it down. all of this comes as trump is pushing for a meeting with putin as soon as possible. what are your thoughts on this? >> the most important thing we need to do is keep supporting and arming ukraine so they can

defend themselves. if trump is able to get a peace deal to end this war, that's great. but that's not going to happen if he cuts off ukraine. if donald trump had his way, if we hadn't passed the $60 billion aid package last year he opposed, putin would be in kyiv today and ukraine would no longer exist so we have to support ukraine. that's the single most important thing. as far as the shooting down of this plane, it points to russian incompetence and the deadly cost of the war they started in ukraine. and the reason the entire world should unite to defend ukraine, force putin to the bargaining table and stop the war. >> we mentioned you are the ranking member of the armed services committee. can you talk about the democratic vision to counter what trump is planning on and how the u.n. enacted? >> the u.s. cannot be a

dominant global. the republican message that we are just going to bully our way around the world and win everywhere is dangerous and wrong. the u.s. need to play a positive role in the world to move us to a peaceful society. part of it is the unaligned nations. increasingly, russia and china are trying to build an alternative international order and pull these countries in. we need to make sure that doesn't happen. we want a partnership with india. so what is important to india? we will work with them on that. so we will work toward our interests but not have the same

highly skilled workers but it has gotten backlash from people saying trump should put the interest of americans first and the debate has devolved into straight up racism. what has been your reaction to all of this in-fighting among the maga trump crowd? >> the number one biggest thing is look, trump built his campaign on a coalition of people who were angry and aggrieved. they were angry and aggrieved about their beliefs of the extreme left and policies they implemented and then a less specific anger about the elites. the establishment. so trump spoke to that anger. but there wasn't any particular policy agenda around that now they have to govern and there will be a major crackup. yes, people in the tech industry who supported trump support more visas. a lot of trump supporters don't

support immigration period. there will be a major clash and it is an opportunity for democrats to present a specific vision. what you will see is the fishers within the republican party. let's start with the doge and fiscal responsibility. trump has promised to cut not anything and cut taxes and balance the budget and that is not possible. we'll see what happens when they have to deal with reality. you'll see the conflicts between people like elon musk and other supporters within the maga movement. there is not a consistency to their policy within their coalition. anger and grievance can only get you so far before you have to deliver something. >> thank you congressman. coming up, new year, new outlook. i'll tell you why it is time to rise up and get more involved in 2025. involved in 2025. it's time to feed ths real food in the right amount.

getting. they attempt today clear the debt for massive new tax cuts. saying nice things about president xi from china. walking back all the tariff talk. now, he is siding with elon musk and says we can have some more visas for foreign workers. i don't think any of us should be shocked to think donald trump didn't keep his word but it sounds like he kind of pulled the wool over a lot of his supporters' eyes. so no. i don't think they will be able to hold together the unity. there will be this constant tension. >> we are learning trump is sided we elon musk. the president-elect says he has always been a fan of h1b visas and them in his

businesses. do you think that would be enough to calm the waters in his base? >> no, there will be another side of business people who need farm workers for example to get their crops in. and that the economy relies on that. and they, too, will have donald trump's ear at some point. donald trump as usual speaks in broad ideas and rhetoric when it comes to whatever policies he is discussing. because he doesn't understand and know the fundamentals he finds himself making excuses and carve-outs. looking at a lot of republicans rev who think of themselves as somewhat principled and have been doing the same type of votes over and over on the debt

ceiling. at this point, i don't expect a lot to be done that is going to need, that can only pass with republican votes. all it takes is this isn't for me. there will be a lot of negotiation as he starts doing these policies and the visas are just the it. >> this week, the trump team asked thits decision on the tiktok ban. so trump has time to negotiate a deal with some chinese owned social media platform. trump's former treasury secretary has previously expressed interest in putting together a bid for tiktok. what do you think is going on here? >> i think what's going on here as you have a bipartisan majority in congress pass this

law because they thought tiktok is a national security concern putting us in jeopardy. at our expense vis a vis china. he said there is actually a higher concern here. that is tiktok is pretty good for me. he decided it was helpful to him. we have seen this sort of thing over and over again. oh, i use the my properties so it's put together a deal. but you know, he is playing with american national security here. and it would be interesting to see if the supreme court will once again give him what he wants. >> house republicans need to hit the ground running in the

new year. they need to select a speaker when they return. before they can ratify the results of the election. several freedom caucus members have expressed misgivings about keeping mike johnson as speaker and the margins are thin. is his speakership in jeopardy? >> it is in jeopardy as long as donald trump is silent. i think speaker johnson will be there. he is always teetering. find someone else who can go get the votes he has done a fairly good job working with hakeem jeffries on the democratic side to get some legislation done the last couple of years that has been very difficult and quite a challenge to keep our nation

in response, i read that groups like yours have seen a massive spike in questions from immigrants about their civil rights. now are you preparing immigrants and what are you hearing from them? >> the first reaction following the election results was an expression of fear and uncertainty. but when people understand what their constitutional protections are, these provide people with the resources they need to protect themselves. when they know what the fifth amendment means for them. how they understand to apply the protections. so they are able to better prepare with the possibility of being confronted with immigration agents questioning them about their status. let's be clear that here, the

separation is meant to deter would be migrants from remaining in the united states and the idea that families will self-deport is preposterous. people are rooted in our communities. they are neighbors, they go to our churches and schools. they are members of our family. so we don't intend to see a large number of people self- deport. what we see is much more concise and better community based organization to try to push back against these threatening language coming from the incoming administration. >> here in new york, an undocumented guatemalan immigrant has been charged with murder after setting a woman on fire. they say he was in the u.s.

illegally adding to the idea of them being dangerous. how do you push back against that narrative when these are weaponnized to sow an anti- immigrant agenda? >> we showcase the mothers and fathers caring for their children, contributing in many different ways to their own communities. people going to our schools, talking to our neighbors. there are thousands upon thousands of community members that are part of the fabric of migrants that have made this country and improved the country in ways that contrast against the white supremacist agenda that intends to vilify every single foreign born person or people that are perceived to be foreign born who are a part of this country. >> now, maga world when trump's incoming government efficiency czars, elon musk and vivek

ramaswamy insisted that america needs the h1b visa program to bring in more foreign skilled workers because the u.s. doesn't produce enough of them to fuel our tech sector. trump says he backs the visa program. but many of his supporters took issue with the comments some resorting to racist language against immigrants of color. as you watch this unfold, do you think there is an opening here to push for more rational and humane immigration approach or is this just maga theater? >> it certainly is maga theater to a certain extent. we have a debate on how to dehumanize migrants. whether to take an exploitive point of view for people coming to work in specialized fields in the united states.
