attack that occurred in the early morning hours. to all the families of those that were killed, to all those who were injured, to all the people in new orleans who are grieving today, i want you to know, i grieve with you. our nation grieves with you. we are going to stand with you as you mourn and as you heal in the weeks to come. i want to thank our great first responders and law enforcement personnel who stopped the attacker in his tracks before he could kill or injure even more people. i want to thank you to everyone the partment of homeland security, the department of justice, to the fbi, working nonstop to investigate this heinous the fbi is leading the investigation to determine what happened, why it happened, whether there is any continuing threat to public safety. here is what we know so far. the fbi has reported to me, the killer was an american citizen, born in texas. he served in the united states
4:01 pm
army on active duty for many years. he also served in the army reserve until a few years ago. the fbi also reported to me that mere hours before the attack, he pushed videos on social media indicating that he was inspired by ices, especially the desire to kill -- the desire to kill. the isis flag was found in his vehicle, which he rented to conduct this attack. possible explosives were found in the vehicle, as well. and more explosives were found nearby. the situation is very fluid and investigation has a preliminary stage. defect is right now, excuse me, there you go. law enforcement intelligence community continue to look for any connections, associations, or co-conspirators. they have nothing additional to report at this time point of the investigation is continuing to be active and no one should jump to conclusions.
4:02 pm
i directed my attorney general, the fbi director, the secretary of homeland security, head of the national counterintelligence terrorism center and the intelligence community, to work on this intentionally, until they have a full and complete information. and once we have that information, i will share that information as soon as we can confirm it. additionally, we are tracking the explosion of a cyber truck outside the trump hotel in las vegas. law enforcement, the intelligence community are investigating this, as well, including whether there is any possible connection to the attack in new orleans. thus far there's nothing to report on that score at this time. i directed my team to make sure every resource is made available to the federal, state, and local law enforcement, to complete the investigation in new orleans quickly, and make sure there's no remaining threat to the

american people. we will support the people in new orleans as we begin the hard work of healing point new orleans is a place unlike any other place in the world. it's a city filled with charm and joy. so many people around the world love new orleans because of its history, its culture, and above all, it's people. so i know, while this person committed a terrible assault on the city, the spirit of our new orleans will never, never, never be defeated. it always will shine forth. we've seen that time and time again throughout its history, and i know we'll see it again in the days and weeks ahead. may god bless the people of new orleans. may god bless our police and our first responders. may god protect our troops and we'll keep you fully contemporaneously informed. thank you. >> president of the united states speaking about both the attack in new orleans and what we have watched transpired in
4:04 pm
las vegas. the president extending his condolences to the people and the city of new orleans, adding that about an hour before the attack in new orleans, it is believed that the suspect posted videos to social media about the nature of the attack, that there were possible explosives both in the vehicle and nearby, that the investigation into what happened in new orleans remains both fluid and lemon every, asking once again, emphasizing that the fbi is still asking anyone who has information to come forward. also talking about the explosion that we saw in vegas, reiterating that the fbi is looking for a possible connection between those two events, emphasizing again that they have not found a connection. let me bring it to our conversation, frank figliuzzi, nbc news senior national security analyst, former fbi assistant direct for counterintelligence, retired fbi special agent arley
4:05 pm
ciccone. thank you both so much for being with us. frank, i had asked you what you anticipated hearing from the president of the united states. some details from the president about the investigation. what stuck out to you? >> i think it's more important to focus on what he didn't say then what he said. so he didn't say that there is no more threat to the public. he rather said that they are continuing to rule that out, so that's significant. and similarly, he didn't say emphatically, there's no connection between the las vegas event and the new orleans event, rather, that there's nothing yet indicating that. so this is very much fluid, very much ongoing, and he promised that as he got information that he could verify, that he would share it with the public, which i think is essential. >> always, bobby and frank figliuzzi, listening to what was not said and effect that that often says more than what our elected officials are able to say in these moments, given
4:06 pm
the tension between information sharing and the fragile nature of these investigations. bobby, what from the president's remarks stood out to you? >> i think he hit every tone. he could only do so much and he probably knows more than he can say right now because he has to protect the integrity of the investigation. he's briefed on everything so he walks a very fine line, but i think that him -- he was very strong in saying that every resource will be put toward this and the fbi is in charge, and they will get every resource they need to do this. so that really struck me, that the tone of the strength of his support for law enforcement, that they're going to do everything they can and if the fbi needs anything, they just have to ask for it. i think what struck me was his ability to say, where this is not an isolated event, we may not know yet. i think he assured the public, i think that sometimes we don't give the public enough credit,
4:07 pm
and i think that he was honest enough with the public to say, we don't know yet whether this is a single isolated incident. we don't know yet whether there's more of a threat out there, and i think that the public knows them themselves, but they get reassured when there officials and their leaders will be honest enough to tell them, we don't know yet certain things and so for a leader to get up there and kind of lie, gloss over things, that doesn't give the public comfort. it gives the public comfort to know the leader is in charge, he knows what's going on, he's assisting in every way he can. and i think that's what the president did just now. >> bobby, frank, i'm going to ask you both to stay with us. we're also awaiting an up date from police officials in vegas. for now i want to bring into our conversation -- they are coming out now. let's go live to vegas. .
4:08 pm
>> okay. good afternoon. my name is kevin mayo. i'm a sheriff with las vegas metropolitan police department. i'm here to give you really a brief up date on what occurred on las vegas boulevard this morning. as you know, we just had our new year's eve event, where we successfully protected the city with over 400,000 people were here last night, and that changed this morning at about 8:40 when a 2024 tesla cyber truck pulled into the area of valet of the trump international hotel. very quickly thereafter that, the driver, who was the sole occupant of the truck, we saw what looked like maybe some sort of smoke, and then the truck exploded. i'm going to -- smoke was
4:09 pm
coming from inside of the truck after we noticed the flash and the explosion. i'm going to show you that first video. that's the cyber truck parked in front of the doors. play that again, carlos. so the individual that was in that truck is obviously deceased. still in the truck as we speak here today. our fire department folks and engine 12, a number of others, you'll hear from one of the fire chiefs in just a moment, arrived very quickly along with my officers. and obviously we knew that we had a much larger event than just a vehicle fire. so there is going to be a drone video that plays to my left. again, you'll see the fire initially, they covered it with a tarp to try to get it to go out. once the fire went out through the suppression efforts of the
4:10 pm
fire department, you'll see some of the evidence in the back of the vehicle. so those are gasoline canisters. they are camp fuel canisters and large firework mortars. i also would like you to pay attention to, on that video, as you see that, it looks like the exterior of that truck is completely impacted as it sits there. the fact that this was a brics really limited the damage that occurred inside of the valley, because it had most of the blast go up through the truck and out. in fact, if you look on that video you'll see that the front glass doors at the trump hotel were not even broken by that last which they were parked directly in front of. you can see that in the video there.
4:11 pm
but i'm very well aware that there's a name already been reported out into the media. i am not going to confirm any names to you as i sit here today, because i cannot do that with 100% certainty of who the individual is. what i can tell you is we do know the truck was listed in colorado. we were able to trace that truck through the tesla charging stations, and it arrived here in las vegas this morning at about 7:30 and went up and down las vegas boulevard before immediately pulling into the trump towers. unfortunately, there were seven people that reported injuries during this incident. all of them still remain as minor injuries and were treated at umc. i would like to thank the resorts world, because as you know, we had to close down the trump and evacuate it, as well as the fashion show mall and
4:12 pm
the resorts world was very gracious in taking those hundreds of individuals in, over there, housing them and defeating them prior to us being able to completely clear the hotel. the hotel and fashion show are back open for business. the trump will remain closed as we continue this lengthy investigation, as we move forward. i'm going to yield now to chief billy samuels, but i'd like you to also recognize all of our exceptional elected officials that have come to support the police and fire department, and this community, in remaining safe. there is no further threat to the community as i sit here today, and i just want to make sure that our community understand, we believe this to be an isolated incident and it is now over as far as the danger. so, bill? >> thank you, sheriff. i'm going to reiterate some of
4:13 pm
the stuff that the sheriff has spoken upon. engine 12 did arrive within four minutes of dispatch, did extinguish the fire with assistance from the sprinkler systems, and along with that electrical vehicle blanket that we use on operations. we did encounter seven the dems. all stable. two of them were transported to umc, who have since been released. they were transported by community indolence. a total of 13 units from clark county fire with 26 personnel and then four units and 17 personnel from las vegas fire and rescue assisted with this operation. we always do appreciate the support that we get from our hotel partners at resorts world. rtc did lend us 10 buses so we could refuge the people that were evacuated from the trump tower. community indolence, for their transportation for us, las vegas fire and rescue and nevada division of emergency management. and we do appreciate their support we can't do it without them. like the sheriff said, last night was a huge success but we are prepared for whatever comes our way, so thank you for that and i will turn this over to
4:14 pm
special agent in charge gary schwartz. >> good afternoon. my name is gary schwartz. i'm currently active special agent in charge of the fbi here in las vegas. the fbi is currently conducting an investigation on the vehicle explosion as the sheriff just showed you a little bit ago. that's been conducted through our gatt f, which is the joint terrorism task force. i want to make sure that anybody understands the task force is comprised of law- enforcement officials from the entire valley here. we are not doing anything alone and we wouldn't do anything alone without our partners, making sure that we are all in lockstep that we learned from mistakes of the past and we are not going to do that again. we have a great relationship with our law enforcement partners and we are going to continue to do so. as of right now, our number one goal is to ensure that we have
4:15 pm
the proper identification, that the subject involved in this incident. following that, our second objective is to determine whether this was an act of terrorism or not. i know everybody is interested in that word and trying to see if we can say, hey, this was a terrorist attack. that is our goal and that's what we're trying to do. we have a ton of resources dedicated to this right now and again, we are doing it with our partners. we are doing it together, jointly, and will continue to do so until we figure out exactly what's going on. i think most importantly, the sheriff already mentioned we believe this is an isolated incident. we do not believe there is a bunch of folks out there supporting this or helping this. we don't believe that there is any other danger to the community right now. but again, over the next few hours and days we will continue to do our best to research that as much as we can and get to the bottom of this, and we won't stop until we are 100% certain as to what happened and why. thank you. >> so i just want to clarify again, so that i don't get these questions. we do know who rented the truck. we are looking at that individual, but i'm not prepared to release the name of any of the individuals that we are looking at, at least until next of kin is notified and we have a 100% identification. so with that, i'll take any questions you might have.
4:16 pm
i can't see. hi, dana. >> there were these kinds of incidents on the same day basically in two tories and capitals? >> do i think it's a coincidence? i don't know, but what i can tell you is we are absolutely investor getting any conductivity to what happened in new orleans, as well as other attacks that have been occurring around the world. we are not ruling anything out yet, dana. >> is there any possibility that this had links to ices? >> so the question is there any links to ices and i will tell you that we don't have any indication of that here in las vegas, no ices flag as was seen in new orleans, but again we are investigating every aspect of this and if that comes to light we'll certainly update you. i'm sorry, sir. >> [ inaudible ]? >> about one hour with the amount of time between the arrival of the truck here in las vegas, at least our first notification of the arrival and the explosion that occurred at the tower. >> [ inaudible ]? >> it was sitting about 15 seconds before it exploded. was that 15? 15 to 20 seconds.
4:17 pm
i just want to make sure i give you the right info. >> the trump connection interesting for investigators? >> it's a tesla truck. we know that elon musk is working with president-elect trump and it's the trump tower so there's obviously things to be concerned about there, and it's something we continue to look at. >> [ inaudible ]? >> so i'm glad you asked that question. do we need to re-examine security procedures? we were very successful the night before. i'm surprised this happened, to be quite frank with you, and that's certainly something we're going to have to look at, in target hardening, what that looks like. but to your question, dana, i did forget to mention that i have authorized what we call an abx roster to continue for the next two days, which is my new year's eve staffing plan of
4:18 pm
over 1000 officers, both in our community, neighborhoods, as well as on the strip and downtown, in partnership with all of the other law enforcement agencies, city of las vegas, marshalls, north las vegas, henderson, just to ensure that even if we had a copycat or somebody else willing to go up and conduct an attack, that we have the appropriate and available resources to handle it. >> have you all found any devices inside the cyber truck that could've been used for the explosion? >> no. the question is did we find any devices that would be used to set off the explosives, and the answer is no. i don't know how they were ignited. clearly with what you see in there, something set them off, but i don't know what it was yet. we haven't been able to process the vehicle yet. >> [ inaudible ]? >> yes, actually i have to thank elon musk specifically. he gave us quite a bit of additional information in regards to how the vehicle was locked after it exploded, due to the force, the nature of the force from the explosion as well as, you know, to capture
4:19 pm
all of the video from the tesla charging stations across the country, and he sent that directly to us. so i appreciate his help on that. i'll take one more question. >> [ inaudible ]? >> i'm sorry, you got to speak up for me. >> elon musk saying this vehicle and the vehicle in new orleans were registered to the same company. any other indication that might he [ inaudible ]? >> the question is, both vehicles, i'm being told, new orleans was rented from tauro and so was ours. that's another coincidence that absolutely is continuing to bear from our investigation that we have to continue to look into. so thank you very much and if we get additional information for all of you, i'm sorry, i'll give you a shot. >> [ inaudible ]? >> question is, are we using's license plate readers and the technology. one you see the drone flight
4:20 pm
through the vehicle because it was unsafe to get there. we're using that technology. thing to have it, as well as the first indication of that vehicle arriving in las vegas came from a license plate reader. technology has been very useful to us in resolving this and again i'll commit to come back to you all. when we have confirmation of the suspect's name, who they are, what their background is, we will get that information back out to you in another press conference and provided. i just like to again thank the mayor, the commissioners, the other law enforcement leaders, and of course our attorney general for showing up and supporting us in this event. it's been a statewide effort and i appreciate it. thank you. >> listening to law enforcement officials out of vegas, including the sheriff of the las vegas metropolitan police department, there fire chief, and the fbi special agent in charge. your eyes did not deceive you. at various points the sheriff was referring to videos that
4:21 pm
our cameras were not able to capture. let's bring in nbc news correspondence emilie ikeda. she has been covering the news of the cyber truck explosion all day. she joins me now. the big thing that stood out to me were one, this emphasis on proper identification, saying they are waiting until they have 100% proper identification, and also the belief that this was an isolated incident, given you have been covering the story all day today. what stood out to you? >> they definitely underscored that they don't believe there is an ongoing threat at this point but we really got some insight into the timeline of what they believe happened. our law enforcement sources telling us that this card, this 2024 cybertruck was rented in early december and police and authorities now saying that it was rented in colorado and then the driver went up to nevada and they were able to track it by looking at where it stopped at the tesla charging station, at the eight of elon musk, they said, helping them obtain video of the movements of the cyber truck.
4:22 pm
it arrived to las vegas, they say, around 7:30 local time this morning. it drove up and down the strip before it pulled outside the front, in the valley area, as you can kind of see in that video there, just outside those glass doors of trump hotel, which is on the northern end of the strip. they say it's set there about 15 seconds or so, it started to smoke, and there was an explosion, and that rapidfire shortly thereafter. we are told that seven people, bystanders, were injured in the vicinity of the area, though at this time they are still considered minor injuries. police also saying that the driver of the vehicle has been killed, and as you mentioned, they are not releasing the identity of that person until they can get 100% certainty around that. so at the news conference the demonstrated video that showed the moments leading up to the explosion, and then also really interestingly here, i did get a look at some of the pictures that they showed, the aftermath of the highly damaged cybertruck. and in the back of the truck it showed gasoline canisters, and also fireworks, which may have contributed to the explosion, and the multiple flashes, though
4:23 pm
they said they couldn't say what caused the explosion at this point. still so much other investigation, and they are considering whether this could be a potential terrorist attack. they're also still looking into the possibility it could be connected to new orleans, as you heard them say, but there is no strong evidence around that. >> nbc news's emilie ikeda, thank you so much. i want to bring into our coverage frank lucy. you listen to, there is law enforcement officials talking through the details that they have. what did you make of the way in which they were able to trace the route of that truck that was rented? >> is a former investor later, i love the idea of this kind of track ability, traceability, and the fact that there is a cooperative relationship with elon musk at this point is quite helpful. and being able to see exactly where this car traversed on its way to las vegas, incredibly help will. i'm also focused in on the fact
4:24 pm
that they were able to say that they don't believe there's any continuing threat to the public. i thought that was really essential to hear. they believe this is an isolated one off, but yet they are still digging in. they couldn't rule out linkage to new orleans, although it appears unlikely. the strong linkage is this turow rental, and by the way, turow is a growing peer to peer car sharing service. is not really appropriate to think of it as a brick-and- mortar rental outfit, and what does that mean, peer to peer car sharing? think of it is more of an airbnb without the corporate oversight of airbnb, so quality differs. the ability to get someone's car, and it might be dirty, it might not be, there might be a lower standard for renting the vehicle. some complaints out there. some people love it. but the fact that it's been a part of now these two incidents today is interesting and makes
4:25 pm
law enforcement wonder, is there something we're missing here? is there a gap in this peer to peer car sharing that we should be looking at? >> frank figliuzzi, i want to ask you to stay with us. up next i got much more on today's explosion in las vegas, the deadly attack in new orleans. stay with us. stay with us.

4:45 pm
violence and the connection that is most troublesome is the one that is between folks who become radicalized but also have military weapons training and we have seen people come back from deployment overseas who were u.s. military veterans, who have engaged in attacks on, say the u.s. capitol on january 6th or the latest reporting is about 230 folks who stormed the capitol were former u.s. military veterans. and so we now have this network of people who have been trained in military tech x and usage, and who are they now going to turn that against? you have folks not just here in the united states but around the world that we've had war and conflict for many years. >> dr. brennan, i'm not sure if you were able to watch earlier. we had president biden speaking from camp david about the attacks both in new orleans and what we watched transpiring las vegas. i spoke with frank figliuzzi shortly after and he noted to
4:46 pm
me that what was interesting was less what the president said and more interesting was what the president was not able to say, which is you did not hear president biden say that there is no ongoing threat to the public. help me understand sort of the bar that needs to be cleared for intelligence leaders, for law enforcement, when it comes to same with absolute certainty that there is no ongoing threat. >> in less than 24 hours from the incident in new orleans, less than that in terms of las vegas, and this investigation is very intent. it's ongoing, and they are trying to find out exactly whether or not any of these individuals had connections or co-conspirators so i think it was very prudent of some of the

other authorities to say they are pursuing the investigation and then will the public know, once they have a sense that these individuals acted alone. but i must say that we've had now in the span of two weeks, individuals who have carried out attacks with vehicles. the one in germany less than two weeks ago and the two just in the past day. so you have to be concerned about especially what's going on in the middle east, with all the violence and bloodshed out there. whether or not isis is actively encouraging these types of attacks . it's been something that they have said over the course of the past several years, in terms of using whatever instruments you have at your disposal, including vehicles to carry out attacks. so i do think the fbi and state and local authorities now are really trying to do as much as they can to understand what motivated these individuals, but also to see whether or not there might be other individuals out there, related or not, whether lone actors might be anticipating some other attacks. so i think with all of the events that are coming up, in terms of the super bowl games in the game tomorrow, scheduled now for tomorrow in new orleans, the funeral of president carter, the upcoming inauguration, that these are things that now all security

with us. speaking about the attack in new orleans, he was directing his team to ensure every resources available per what will that look like? what does it look like from a federal perspective? >> what it means is that we will have the resources to fully refund all our local and state officials for the investigation and resources needed to secure the area, to undo the investigation that will allow us to follow every possible lead and to determine if this individual acted alone or if there were additional co- conspirators. what's important now is to allow these federal, local, and state law enforcement experts to do their jobs, to not second- guess, or to get in the way, if you will, but to stand back, allow yourself to stay in a

safe zone. don't go into the french quarter, near the french quarter. the french quarter is indeed an active crime scene with investigations that are going on. we are getting new information as the date goes on. we've been in constant communication with doj, with homeland security, with the governor's office of homeland security, all of the other various agencies. the president was very clear that he is dispatching every resource of the federal government to make sure that no stone is left unturned, to ensure that while this individual was taken down by law enforcement, any other that may have been a part of this will be found and brought to justice, as well, and our communities will be made safe. for our visitors and citizens alike. new orleans hosts some million people every single year and we take great pride in making sure

that when they come here for a sugar bowl, super bowl, final four, mardi gras, any other event, that we ensure their safety. we will make sure that we double those efforts. >> as you well know, a community can be made safe. it cannot, after an event like this, be made whole. survivors often remind us that yes, there is the investigation, there is the news coverage that happens and this moment eventually, things turn away to the next story and they are left with the empty chair at their dining room table. they are left with the guilt of being the one who has survived. what is going to be necessary again for a community that has been asked to be resilient, has been asked to demonstrate resiliency one too many times. what is going to be necessary to continue to move forward? >> nothing will replace that empty chair. our hearts and prayers go out to the families of lost ones. our hearts and prayers go out to those who are recovering in

hospitals now perk our hearts and players go out to the law enforcement, particularly two officers that were injured in the line of duty. nothing will replace the pain that they will suffer. if there's any solace, it's in knowing that their lives will not be lost in vain and that we will do everything in our power to identify if there are others that were involved and to bring them to justice, and to also double down our efforts to make sure that, going forward, these cowardice acts of terrorism will be minimized, if not completely eliminated. as you know, these kind of acts can happen anywhere. we see what's going on in las vegas. we've seen it happen in many other cities across the country. terrorism is just that. it's a cowardice act that seeks to sneak and surprise, and we will learn from this as we learn from every event, to make sure that we re-fortify our efforts
