right now, a big chunk of the u.s. is a snowy mass. 53 million people under winter alerts from illinois to southern new jersey. classes are canceled. flights are canceled. parts of kansas are seeing 18 inches of snow. that did not look like a lot of fun on the roads. nbc's antonia hylton reporting from philadelphia, and nbc meteorologist bill karins is here with me. it just looks cold where you are. but what kind of impact are we seeing from this winter storm. >> reporter: it's a little chilly. thankfully i don't have snow piling up on my neck like i did a little while ago. we are looking at a couple of inches piling up on the ground. in some parts of this region, as much as a foot. in kansas, more than a foot of snow in some cases. if you don't have to be on the roads, necessary errands or a job you have to work for in

person today, experts say you might want to avoid going out there and it's even worse if you are planning to travel by plane today, especially if you're in the dmv area, in dallas and missouri, that's where we're seeing a lot of trouble with flights. we're at almost 5,000 delays today, and almost 2,000 cancellations. just here on the ground in the city of philadelphia our team has been here all day, on some of the roads that aren't cleared quite as well, we have seen cars slipping and sliding in some cases. that's what's to expect if you get out there. the good news, though, chris, is this system is going to be out over the atlantic by about 12:00 a.m. later tonight. and so after that, you're not going to be dealing with the snow piling up, but the cold temperatures will very much still be here. the windchill will be here. we're going to have to deal with that for a couple more days to come, chris. >> okay. go where it's warm. i hope you have a truck or car waiting for you.
11:25 am
bill, lawmakers are all going home after the certification. what's it looking like? >> d.c. got what they thought, about 6 inches and that was in the forecast. philadelphia, 1 to 3, expecting a mill elizabeth warren that. kansas city, 11 inches of snow. that's historic. one of the bigger snowstorms they have had in 30 years. louisville and cincinnati, lexington areas, around 6 to 8 inches of snow. for that reason, because we still have very slip pery reasons, ice ahead of the storm. a lot of winter storm warnings. we have this wrap around piece, we have to get off the coast this evening. when this comes through after dark, another 1 to 2 inches on top of what you have. don't be surprised if you clear everything off, and tomorrow morning you may have to do everything again. maybe a little more in west virginia. behind this storm, it's brutal. it's not fun anywhere in the midwest, cleaning up with windchills in the single digits, along the gulf coast, we have cold weather advisories from
11:26 am
houston to tampa, orlando, new orleans, mobile, everyone is included. the windchill feels like in the 30s in most areas, so the cold air is in place, and that sets the stage for the next storm. we get a break tomorrow, break wednesday, then thursday, this next storm comes in with the cold air in place, we're predicting snow if dallas, fort worth, doesn't happen all that often. little rock can get snow out of this one, memphis too. ice is possible, north georgia, keep an eye on you, and atlanta, that's going to be for friday. all of a sudden, we're talking a lot more airport problems, and then saturday, this gets to the coast, and this is the million dollar question. does it turn up the coast as a nor'easter, or does it go off the coast, sparing the northeast? right now, it looks to stay south of new england, so it looks like some light snow maybe from about philly southwards, possibility of heavier snow, north carolina and virginia. chris, we're going to have to keep an yard eye on this, at le potential it could sneak up the coast. this is the areas of ice that are possible in the south, that's always a problem, and snow as we head from dallas,

little rock, nashville, not areas we talk snow often, could be your storm. >> bill karins, thank you, i think. not sure. appreciate you. let's say that for sure. right now, we are waiting for vice president kamala harris to speak from capitol hill following the certification of the election. we are told she is currently in meeting with the minority leader, hakeem jeffries, and we'll have her comments for you as soon as they begin. also still to come, congress is sworn in, they have certified trump's win, now to the first order of legislative business, but is there already friction over how to pass the republican agenda. we'll talk about it coming back. agenda we'll talk about it coming back. . help fuel today with boost high protein, complete nutrition you need, and the flavor you love. so, here's to now... now available: boost max!
