a devoted mother of three and wife of a church leader. so when a car bomb shattered life as she knew it, investigators were baffled. the motive remained a mystery until a stunning twist led detectives in a direction that was hard to believe even for connie herself. here's josh mankiewicz with deadly intent. josh mankiewicz: you're looking at the life of the hoagland family of san diego played out in brief... moments stretching across the years, from the prosaic to the profound... that's the mom, connie just after she gave birth to son jonathan... larry hoagland: okay look over here guys, one, two three. good one. josh mankiewicz: here he is six years later after losing a tooth. larry hoagland: hey jonathan that's a great smile you have there. josh mankiewicz: this is oldest daughter

'cause i just wanted to have fun. and we had to always pause and take a picture, which kinda got annoying after a while. but-- looking back, it's nice to see the pictures, i guess. josh mankiewicz: the mom, connie, loved being with her kids so much so that as grew older, she found a job taking care of toddlers at this day care home. but on september the 23rd, 2010--as connie was leaving her job for the day... her life and family were quite literally blown apart. news report: a thunderous explosion rocks an east county neighborhood. teddy williams: the first thing i said to myself when i heard the explosion was oh my goodness what was that? josh mankiewicz: teddy williams is the owner of the day care home. teddy williams: so i ran out the gate... i come to this point and i stopped because connie's car is rolling at full speed and smacks into my van.
10:05 pm
i ran around her truck and this is where i found connie. right here on her side in the street. josh mankiewicz: connie hoagland was her best friend. teddy williams: connie was laying on her side, curled up in a ball i rolled her over there was glass. there was shrapnel. there was shards of metal everywhere. everywhere josh mankiewicz: teddy knew all the hoagland family's cell phone numbers and she was the one who broke the news. jaclyn reagan: i was driving and -- and she said that there was an explosion, and my mom's truck blew up. and so i immediately pulled over, stopped, and-- called my dad to ask him, what's goin' on? what-- w-- what do we do? josh mankiewicz: what did he say? jaclyn reagan: he said, i just heard, too. i don't really know all the details. josh mankiewicz: the hoagland family gathered at u.c. san diego medical center where connie had been taken for emergency surgery. jaclyn reagan: we got to quickly see her-- rush from the hallway

10:07 pm
and what we were doing was looking for secondary devices, so we didn't walk into an area and actually get hit by another device of some sort. josh mankiewicz: robert luke of the san diego county sheriff's bomb squad and atf agent matt beals were the lead investigators. they quickly learned that something about the day care may have made it a target. matt beals: well, in that particular daycare center, we were aware that there were other law enforcement officials who had their children-- in that particular home during the day. josh mankiewicz: was it possible someone was out to kill cops and their kids? if so, connie--who always parked in front of the day care home-- could have been the perfect, yet unwitting, delvery system for the bomb. robert luke: they were lookin' for any known or-- or suspected domestic terrorists or possible watch list-type people that may be in the area. josh mankiewicz: no question that this was an ied, an improvised explosive device?
10:08 pm
matt beals: no. josh mankiewicz: and suddenly they had more questions after they ran connie's address... and discovered that in her neighborhood--two weeks earlier--police had found another bomb... craig melvin: two bombs with one explosive connection. investigators discover this attack was personal. craig melvin (voiceover): coming up had connie or her family been targeted before? john wood: we're like, wow, this is for real. craig melvin (voiceover): when dateline continues. josh mankiewicz: when connie hoagland's truck ok, noah's going to make a fire. our job is to let him do it...by himself. what kind of wood you got there? gregggg! it is important to challenge young homeowners turning into their parents. -mm... -oh! -not a great start. -you got to turn it. you got to turn it. doesn't look structurally sound here. tom! they can't help themselves. -a fire starter?! -you know cavemen, they built fires with nothing

was hidden in a fedex envelope. but what really got everyone's attention was the detonator... linked to a cell phone. josh mankiewicz: and that, to you, says what? captain john wood: this is somebody that can build the bomb and can sit there from anywhere in the world and set it off. anchor: we have breaking news. a bomb squad investigates a suspicious object in rolando. josh mankiewicz: taking no chances, they sent in a robot... to disarm the bomb. squad member: fire in the hole josh mankiewicz: a firefighter was then put in one of those famous suits to make a final safety check ... and found the cell-phone detonator had 18 missed calls. only a broken wire had prevented the bomb from going off. captain john wood: and we were, like, wow. this is for real. josh mankiewicz: police ran the phone numbers, of course... but they belonged to untraceable throw-away phones available almost anywhere. the bomber or bombers had left no trace of themselves.
10:14 pm
detective chris everett: no fingerprints. no dna. josh mankiewicz: the only real clues were found on the fedex envelope--duct tape and soot-- suggesting the bomb might have fallen off the underside of a car... and so... two weeks later... when connie's truck blew up at the daycare home... investigators immediately wondered... were these two sophisticated bombs really the work of terrorists... or was all this personal? robert luke: we went through all those gamuts and we had a lot of people just going out and chasing every lead there was to try to get this stuff done. josh mankiewicz: and ... while he was still at the crime scene... detective luke had what seemed to be an odd visit... from an old colleague, eric stalnaker. the former commander of the san diego fire department bomb squad, ...that's luke to the left of your screen and stalnaker to the far right. robert luke: he was the first one to contact me
10:15 pm
as soon as i got on the scene, and i says, what are you doin' here? he tells me he had retired to colorado. came back to visit some friends here in town and he heard about the bomb and he came over to try to assist us-- tell us. josh mankiewicz: and there was one more thing... robert luke: he turns out to be an acquaintance of the hoagland family, so he knew the victim and the husband. first thing that popped into my mind is we have a bombing here, we have a bomb guy on-scene that's retired and now he's also-- has some nexus to do with the family. matt beals: that was definitely a curve ball. josh mankiewicz: john wood was bomb squad commander then and had the same unsettling concerns. capt john wood: he's one of our own sittin' there and we're goin', wow. why did he show up? now he just became a suspect. josh mankiewicz: this is-- this guy used to have your job? captain john wood: exactly. josh mankiewicz: before you? captain john wood: he was the one who appointed me after i left. josh mankiewicz: so, everybody here knows him? captain john wood: yup. josh mankiewicz: trusts him? likes him? captain john wood: yup. josh mankiewicz: and he's a friend of the family. and he'd know how to make that device. captain john wood: exactly. josh mankiewicz: stalnaker, though, had a tip, offering up a possible suspect---connie

hoagland's ex-son-in-law who, stalnaker claimed, may have had it in for the family. matt beals: that was absolutely a lead that we needed to go out and follow up on immediately, you josh mankiewicz: because he was the only person that anybody could think of who didn't like connie and larry? matt beals: exactly or so we were, you know, told and led to believe. josh mankiewicz: so beals hit the road... bound for vegas and a meeting with connie's son-in-law. matt beals: he didn't have a negative thing to say about connie in any way, shape or form. josh mankiewicz: just as important, the son-in-law had a solid alibi. matt beals: we corroborated his story as to where he was and he had receipts to back up that he was at a store at one time, and-- and clearly not in san diego. not in california and his alibi all checked out. josh mankiewicz: all of which put the guy who fingered him, stalnaker, under even more suspicion. meanwhile investigators put connie's truck up on a lift for a closer inspection. and in the soot dust on the floor pan they saw an outline the size of a fedex envelope...framed
