announced retaliatory measures after president trump imposed tariffs on them saturday. neither country has given any option to avoid a trade war likely to cost consumers, regardless of where in north america they live. meantime, trump's billionaire sidekick elon musk is doing battle with the entire civil service career. government employees say they are being being fired or placed on leave arbitrarily as unelected members of musk's office of government efficiency seize access to sensitive government computer systems that manage the federal workforce and control the government purse strings. amid the upheaval, president trump spent much of the day at his own florida golf club, leaving it to others to try and clean up the messes he
2:02 pm
created. joining us now is senator chris van hollen, democrat of maryland. let's start with the president's newly enacted tariffs on canada and mexico and china. canada says it will place retaliatory 25% tariffs on more than $100 billion worth of u.s. goods. and mexico is readying a similar measure that they are planning to announce tomorrow. economists have warned for months a trade war will raise prices for the american people, something trump denied during the campaign. now the president's message is the pain. is the pain. will it be worth it? what is your response, senator? >> well, reverend. >> al. >> it's good to be with you. >> and trump. >> is clearly trying. >> to flood the zone. with all these actions. but make no mistake. it's simple math.
2:03 pm
raising tariffs on all these goods coming in from canada and mexico is going to be like an increased sales tax on the american people. i mean, when you increase the costs of bringing that into the country, the costs go up. and i say it's a double whammy because obviously canada and mexico took retaliatory action. so that means businesses in america that are exporting goods using, you know, american labor, american jobs to canada and mexico will be facing tariffs in those countries. and so fewer people are going to want to buy those goods because their costs will go up. so this is a bad news all around for the american people and for somebody who campaigned on a platform that he was going to look out for working people. i'm telling you, he is socking it right to working people. >> now. >> now, senator, is there anything congress can do to deescalate this trade war? why are americans who support free
2:04 pm
trade silent right now? >> well, unfortunately, republicans who used to claim that they wanted to, you know, have free trade, at least for consumers, right. let me be clear. i'm for targeted sanctions to protect strategic industries. but these across the board tariffs will raise prices. and republicans who used to care about this are now just running for the hills because it's donald trump. we have a lot of people who have just become, yes, men and women for donald trump. and they're not willing to speak up or speak out, even when it comes to raising prices on their constituents and putting a lot of their businesses that are in, in the export business at risk. >> now, let's turn to what's going on with the federal workforce right now. there are reports that civil servants are being targeted for having a die roll or even attending sensitivity trainings. according
2:05 pm
to the washington post, two top security officials at us aid were placed on leave after refusing to let unelected members of elon musk dodge commission access restricted spaces at the agency. musk has responded on x by calling u.s. aid a criminal organization. this is a quote what is going on right now? >> well, i've been on the phone earlier today with lawyers that are prepared to file lawsuits to protect aid. you cannot, by using an executive order, try to dismantle an organization aid that was established by statute. but beyond that, what's happening is donald trump is trying to replace merit based civil servants. so folks who were selected based on their qualifications and what they know with political cronies,
2:06 pm
people selected by who they know and only loyalty to donald trump. they're doing this through something called schedule f, and this is another illegal action that they're trying to implement through executive order. so, you know, reverend al, because the republicans in congress refuse to stand up against these illegal actions. we are, many of us, myself included, supporting the legal actions that are being filed to try to protect the law, protect the constitution, and ultimately protect the american people. >> now, confirmation hearings for trump's cabinet nominees will continue this week. the senate finance committee will vote on rfk jr. s nomination to be hhs secretary on tuesday. you've voiced particularly strong opposition to kennedy's nomination, citing his views on public health as a member of the budget committee. you and other democrats boycotted the vote of.
2:07 pm
russ vought for the office of management and budget on the russ vought vote. do you believe any of your republican colleagues will have the courage to oppose any of these confirmations? and which one worries you the most? >> so you mentioned that two there with rfk jr. i do think he poses a great risk to the public health of people throughout the country because of his conspiracy theories on vaccines. i'm proud to represent maryland. we're home to the nih and the fda. these are people who work every day to try to develop treatments and cures to diseases that impact the country, including vaccines. and rfk s spread of misinformation will put american lives at risk. i'm glad you mentioned russ vote because he's gotten less attention. probably because republicans will vote for him.
2:08 pm
as you said, we boycotted the voting session in committee because the chairman of the committee, senator lindsey graham, refused to conduct the hearing and the voting session in public. we think it's important that people know who russ vote is and what he will do. so of all these nominees, he can be the most dangerous because he's at the command and control center of every agency's budget, right. so this is an office within the executive branch of the office of the president. russ, vote at the hearing refused to commit to following the law. in other words, he refused to say that when congress duly enacts, you know, funds to support communities and kids and education around the country, that the president has an obligation to follow that law. we just saw this recently in their effort to freeze federal
2:09 pm
funds. so russ vote was one of the architects of project 2020. and he is going to be in that perch position if he gets confirmed. but we're going to try to persuade our republican colleagues, at least four of them, to oppose him. we might get for reverend al on rfk. but look, at the end of the day, if people like pete hegseth can be confirmed to a place like department of defense, we know at the end of the day, republicans are just falling in line for donald trump. >> now, before we lose you, senator, we still have bodies being recovered from the potomac river after last week's deadly plane crash over washington. that hasn't stopped the president from blaming the tragedy without evidence on diversity, equity and inclusion practices, which he's attempting to stamp out of the federal government and even private institutions. now, this isn't the first time he and his
2:10 pm
supporters have blamed a national tragedy on diversity. but from what we've seen so far, none of the military or commercial airline crew were black. and i'll argue that's exactly the connotation trump was going for. how long can trump keep invoking this boogeyman before the american people get tired of it? >> well, reverend al, i was watching that press conference, and of course, i represent maryland, right close to washington national. we lost many marylanders in that tragedy. and as people were still working to recover the bodies, the president engaged in that outrageous race baiting made up comments. it was sickening. i said then, and i say now, he owes an apology to the families who lost loved ones. he owes an apology to the country. and at the same time, as we've discussed, he is trying
2:11 pm
to replace qualified people throughout the federal government, people who are hired based on their qualifications, like the faa with political cronies. so he wants ultimately for political hacks to be in key positions at the faa. political hacks to be in key positions on food inspection. this is a real clear and present danger to our country that you've got people like elon musk getting the keys to the financial payment system for the u.s. treasury. this is why our courts are going to be tested. we need to do everything we can to file lawsuits, and we are on the brink of a constitutional crisis. if the president refuses to obey the orders of these courts. >> and i might just say as a point that we did see, there was one woman involved. the captain was a white woman, but i do not think that is what he was talkingand there is no
2:12 pm
basis to say she was a di hire. in fact, he has nominated a white woman to be over national intelligence. thank you, senator chris van hollen, for being with us. turning now to chicago, a city that has been targeted by trump's administration's ice deportation raids. take a listen to what the city's mayor, brandon johnson, had to say this past week on the matter that. >> white house is being ran in one of the most raggedy forms of government that i've ever seen. if anybody is questioning whether or not what our country will look like had the confederacy won, there should be no question now. they want us to be afraid. do not be afraid, chicago. >> joining me now is chicago mayor brandon johnson. mr. mayor, thank you for being with us. to start, can you elaborate on your comments from wednesday and what has been the reaction?
2:13 pm
>> yeah, sure. thank you. and happy new year, reverend al. look, it's very clear that there is a real assault against working people, not just in the city of chicago, but america. and it. is quite clear. and there's evidence now that those who have not accepted the results of the civil war are now trying to literally roll back everything that we won post reconstruction, the reconstruction era, the descendants of slaves. as for very simple things education, housing, health care, jobs, right, and transportation, these are the very things in which this administration has shown a great deal of animus towards. and the fact that he's even going after the 14th amendment, another victory won post reconstruction is proof positive that this administration wants to work outside of the framework of the constitution. there are two sides here, reverend al. you either support the constitution and the evolution of our democracy or you do not. and
2:14 pm
clearly this administration doesn't. >> now, ice announced 864 arrested and 621 detained on saturday. nationwide. what is the latest on the raids happening in your city? and are you in communication with the trump administration? >> well, i will say this as a city, we are going to continue to uphold the law of our land, which is that we are a welcoming city. this is something that was established over 40 years ago by the first black mayor, mayor harold washington. what we've said repeatedly is that our local law enforcement will not behave as federal agents. we won't interfere. we won't get in the way. but we're not going to support their efforts. undocumented individuals in our country, who have been proven to be convicted of a crime, will be subject to that law, which which entails deportation. what you are seeing in the city of chicago is that we're not falling victim to this intimidation. we know our rights. we're going to stand up
2:15 pm
and fight and protect the interests of working people and not allow this administration to stoke fear. reverend al, there is no moment in the history of the globe where we have received a greatness in our society through fear. it's actually antithetical to what it means to be a democracy, which is we have to pull on the hopes and aspirations of all of those who helped build this nation. and this administration is running opposite of that. >> a second judge has blocked the trump administration's federal aid funding freeze for various government agencies, citing violation of the law, a move the white house that caused widespread confusion. how has your city of chicago been impacted by this? >> well, again, you know, for all the baseball moms and dads out there, this administration continues to balk. you know, these illegal, deceitful motions or moves that he continues to
2:16 pm
attempt is something that we have to pay close attention to. this administration was prepared to block food, housing, health care, education to working people in this country. and so what we have done, we have doubled down on our efforts and commitment to invest in people. just this past week, we cut the ribbon on more affordable homes. we built 4000 affordable homes within the first 20 months of my administration. that's the same work, though, that, you know, mayor andre dickens is doing in atlanta. it's the work that i know that tishaura jones is doing. in saint louis. you have mayors across this city that are investing in the economic aspect and the solvency of our communities, and so we're going to continue to uphold our principles and our values that working people deserve, an administration that's going to invest in education, housing, health care, good paying jobs, transportation and our environment. environmental justice. let me just say this last point, 20% of the world's fresh water sits right in the
2:17 pm
front door of chicago. and of course, our strongest ally in this hemisphere, canada. and so as we look and see how there is a disruption around the globe, it's more important now than ever that we remain in good relationship with canada and mexico. these policies that this administration has put forth is a real threat to working people across the globe. and the city of chicago is going to stand up and lead the way. >> now, you mentioned two mayors in atlanta and one in saint louis. it seems that trump has been the most confrontational with the nation's largest city mayors such as yourself, who are also mostly black in these cities. the mayors. do you personally feel targeted, and are you concerned with potential consequences or retaliation from the administration as you push back? >> well, we're certainly not afraid. look, frederick douglass, reverend doctor martin luther king, jr. fannie lou
2:18 pm
hamer sat down with some of the most detestable people in our nation's history. and if they can sit down and work through elements of threat, certainly i can do that. what is very obvious, though, to me, is that there is true animus against progressive politics that see transformation through the lens of liberation. and particularly as we celebrate black history month. when you look at the accomplishments that we have made over the course of decades in this country, it has always been through the lens of black folks. look, here's the part that's actually fascinating to me, especially as we talk about dei during the great depression. unemployment for white men was 30%. reverend al and our country called it a national crisis. they got housing, they got education, they got shovels before there were things to dig. no one talked about diversity, equity and inclusion when white
2:19 pm
men needed to be made whole. and now you have black folks, brown folks, asian folks. you have lgbtq plus folks across this country that need us to stand up for working people. that's the legacy in which i come from, and that's the fight that we're going to continue to wage in the city of chicago as we lead the way to defend and protect the interests of everyday working people. >> well, i have you. i want to give you a chance to respond. the inspector general of the city of chicago published a report this week in which she said that your office denied her team access to a room that has lavish gifts for the city. the report accuses the mayor's office of not properly documenting designer gifts, some worth a lot of money. have you been to that room? what? what is your side of the story? >> well, that's a great question. first of all, i have never seen the room. this room has been around for multiple administrations. these are gifts that are gifted to the city that
2:20 pm
we receive on behalf of the city. but we don't accept them. and they go into this room. they're logged. it's public. there's nothing surreptitious about this. the bottom line is this i have been pushing for working people in this city for 20 months, $20 billion of new investment. we're hiring young people up to 29,000 young people for summer jobs. crime continues to go down in the city of chicago, much like what's happening in baltimore, where brandon scott there, who's doing an incredible job. this is simply an attempt to continue to undermine our message and our movement to ensure that everyday people, their interests and their values are front and center. so this room never been to it? no. have no interest in being in it, and everything is properly logged. and if somebody wants to see what other mayors have received over the years or the things that have been received since i've been mayor, that information is open and public. >> all right. and as you and i and others struggle around
2:21 pm
keeping dei where it is, i know when we had on martin luther king day our national drive and rally in washington, dc, reverend marshall hatch of new pilgrim church there in chicago, represented chicago well, he spoke at our rally chicago. he always does. >> and he's a proud west sider. we love you. southside, the entire city of chicago. but doctor king was a west sider in the city of chicago where i'm raising my family. but thank you all for your reverend al, for your leadership. we're looking forward to have you in the city of chicago again. >> i have a friend that calls me on the radio every other day. frank says the west side is the best side. i'm not getting in that fight. brandon johnson, mayor of chicago, thank you for being with us. coming up, we're talking about black history month in the age of trump 2.0. there's never been a time to rise up and honor african american achievement more than american achievement more than now. still have moderate to severe ulcerative colitis...

tuskegee airmen this year, we must also acknowledge we now live in a world where our country's leaders are encouraging americans to view today's pilots with fear and suspicion. it is outrageous and unacceptable, but it should also serve as a reminder of what black history month is really all about. it's not only a time to honor the achievement of black pioneers, but also to acknowledge the hell they often went through during their extraordinary lives. from harriet tubman to shirley chisholm to jackie robinson and barack obama. any black american who was the first at anything confronted insults and threats to get there, and sometimes outright violence to pathways they blazed were often quickly littered with obstacles placed by racist determined to ensure their accomplishments were not easily repeated. that vicious

cycle continues to this day. many black americans and their allies are understandably demoralized this february, but i encourage everyone to rise up and celebrate black history month more loudly and boldly than ever before. and as we raise our voices, let's remind the nation that this month is not only about lofty heights african americans have reached, but also the harrowing lows we've had to endure to get there, and the long path of struggle we have walked along the way. we'll be right back. >> work, play. blink. relief. work. play. blink. relief. work. play. blink. relief. >> the only 3 in 1 despite being on an antidepressant, i was still masking my depression symptoms.

inclusion for everything after every crisis or institutional failure, there has been an attempt to scapegoat diversity, equity and inclusion rather. than examining the real causes. look, if we look at the crash, unfortunately, the crash in washington dc, internal faa safety report shows that. staffing at the tower was not. adequate for the time of day or the volume of traffic. the air traffic controller, who was responsible for overseeing the helicopters, was also directing the planes. these are two separate jobs. also, they're different radio frequencies that are used to communicate with airplane pilots and with helicopters. those are the real causes. when we look at these crashes, or at least the crash in washington as to what happened. but unfortunately, what we're seeing from the administration is an attempt to blame diversity, equity and inclusion and use us use people of color as scapegoats when in fact it is not real. there is a claim here that, you know, for
