that states are aware of attacks on our election infrastructure. they are looking out for foreign adversaries. for a lot of states who don't have the funding to have top notch cybersecurity experts on hand, cisa plays that role for them. so all of these moves, i think, are not only bad for democracy, but very dangerous for the american public. >> now, in addition to going after the fec, president trump has floated the idea of using political blackmail to force states to adopt voting rules critics say are suppressive. in california, trump has suggested tying wildfire aid to voter id legislation, and some republican lawmakers are already trying to act on his suggestion. how concerned are you that trump will try and strongarm states into running elections his way?

2:31 pm
because we believe in a government, for the people and by the people. and as such, we want to make sure that not only elections are run safely and securely, but that people have access to the polls. we at the democratic association of secretaries of state are certainly getting out, trying to reach the grassroots and mobilizing some of our allies to educate people about these threats to democracy. what we found in 2020, 2022 and even 2024 is that when people know that their freedoms are at risk and that their democracy is at risk, they have shown up to support democratic secretaries. so we are going to build on that strong foundation and really try

other events. so they felt like they needed to switch up. but choosing to switch up when the president, the same one who is who is spearheading a national attack on die to me is a very significant message. again, i love that they were there to begin with because if you want to end racism, how about starting by not ending colin kaepernick's career? you exiled him from the league because he was speaking up against these messages that you claim to now be in support of. so there's that part of it. the other piece of it, too, is that when you look at the nfl's track record, when it comes to race, it's quite inconsistent. i mean, it was just a few years ago, reverend, that they ended race norming. and for those people who don't understand what that is in the concussion settlements, they were denying money or giving black players who suffer from concussions a lesser amount of money from the concussion settlements because, according to their science, black players were cognitively inferior compared to white players. they just ended that a couple years ago. so i don't know who the nfl is trying to impress, but i don't look at what you say. i don't look at

2:48 pm

2:49 pm
well. but i do think there is him sending a message, a direct message to black athletes in particular, who have been his most been his most ardent detractors, that this is a way to intimidate and remind them of who's in charge. >> now, while we have time. jamil. as last month's wildfires ravaged the los angeles area, you made it a point to draw attention to the devastation of the historical historically black community of altadena. i was there three days ago to speak at the memorial for some of the residents that lost their lives in last month's eaton fire and altadena, but also to meet with the families trying to rebuild their lives and homes, many of which were generational and are now completely gone. as los angeles starts to rebuild. why is it important to keep a focus on altadena specifically?
2:50 pm
>> i think it's important to keep a focus there because, as you mentioned, these are not these are not people who are wealthy but have been able to maintain very coveted property in their family for generations. their rebuild is going to look a lot different than it is for the people who live in the pacific palisades and the people that live that lived in malibu. again, this is a historically black generational community, and altadena was one of the few places in los angeles. and i know a lot of people kind of have this perception that los angeles was always liberal and that, you know, they're one of the more tolerant, inclusive cities. and while that may be true to now, that wasn't always the case. and altadena was one of the few places where black people who were upwardly mobile, who had pieced together their version of the american dream, this is where they could go set up roots, and the fact that they have been so vigilant over generations to maintain this connection, maintain their property. you've got people who are in the same house that their mamas and grandmas and great grandparents lived in. that's that's an important through line
