>> trouble forging an agreement between the house and the senate. but that's actually the easy part. what they're doing right now is to stage. >> in. >> the budget process, where the budget committee set the numbers to go out to. >> the appropriate. >> to the. >> authorizing committees to actually come back with. >> the laws. >> that then can be put through the reconciliation process in that. next stage when they actually have to put medicaid on the chopping block, not just. >> use numbers, show. >> medicaid has to be on. >> the chopping. >> block, but put. >> medicaid on the. >> chopping block. >> in front of all of america. it is. going to be very painful for them. >> now, extending trump's 2017 tax cuts would cost $4.6 trillion over a decade, according to the congressional budget office. and senate, if senate republicans use the current accounting process, they have no chance of making the

cuts permanent because they require paying for it. so instead of or instead they want to use a different scoring method that assumes the extension will cost nothing because there's already law. some have called it a sign republicans don't expect to pay for the cost of their tax agenda. what is your take on this? >> well, first of all, they're counting the money twice. they counted it first when they put through the first trump tax cuts for billionaires. by counting the tax cuts for billionaires as ending in ten years so they could shrink how much trump was giving. >> away to billionaires in. >> that first one. >> and now they're. pretending that that money was never going to go away. >> it was always going to stay. >> so they can't have it both ways. >> the acid test for this is going to be the debt limit, because. >> no matter how. >> they lie about what the

ranking member of house foreign affairs committee. what's your reaction to yesterday's meeting? >> well, first off, thanks for having me. >> rep. >> my reaction is that was not a meeting. that was a gift to vladimir putin. it is so apparent here that vladimir putin is somewhere in the kremlin, smiling from ear to ear after that display, something that we have not ever seen before. seeing a president make very clear that he sides with the aggressor, the dictator, over the champion for democracy and for freedom. and so i'm still unnerved by it. i know that most of america was uncomfortable with what we saw, and the consequences therein are tremendous. >> now, you are also on the budget committee. and this week, republicans in the house and senate passed their budget plans. now, the hard work of reconciling the two proposals begin. democrats remain extremely concerned about

potential massive cuts to programs like medicaid. can you talk about what's at stake and where we go from here? >> well, look, i sat in a 12 plus hour budget markup hearing where i heard my republican colleagues over and over again commit to draconian cuts. page 43 instructs the committee on agriculture to cut $230 billion from programs like snap and food. assistance for school lunches. page 44 instructs cuts to medicaid, which is going to hit long-term. >> care senior. >> centers, senior citizens, and so many nursing homes and the healthcare of so many americans. so i know directly that there going to be negative effects. and so my republican. colleagues are hearing in. >> their communities. >> at. >> town halls. >> that people won't stand for these types of cuts. >> federal workers are reportedly receiving another

email this weekend from elon musk and doge, asking them to provide a list of accomplishments from the week. even after some trump administration department heads told their workers not to respond to the last email a week ago, the trump administration is under pressure to elaborate on musk's role in the administration. they have previously said he was a special government employee, which would limit him to working just 130 days a year. some in congress, some congress demand more clarity from the white house. on musk's role. >> well, look, i think this special government employee designation is a problem, right? it limits him to 130. >> days. >> which can be extended. but even more of an issue is the lack of financial disclosure that's required. that's why i'm a co-sponsor of legislation from. >> congressman john. >> larson of connecticut. that

now. andrew cuomo is in the race. he's joining a crowded field of democrats in the primary looking to unseat mayor eric adams. how does he change the race? >> politics is. >> a beautiful thing. >> and there's. >> always an. >> opportunity for. second chances. look, he's the. clear frontrunner. >> no one. >> would disregard. >> that at this point. >> and eric adams. >> chances of. >> winning the. >> democratic primary. >> are exceedingly minimal. >> i would not count him out as a. >> republican in the general. >> and that's. >> an unfortunate. >> state of our political affairs right now. but certainly. >> this at. >> this point, is andrew cuomo's. >> to lose. >> now, it's not guaranteed. there's a lot left, and everyone's already training their political ammunition on him. but gosh, he's the clear frontrunner right now. >> now, you mentioned that mayor adams could run as a republican. could he legally run as a republican? number one. and number two, aren't there those

that could get independent funding and just beat up on andrew cuomo on old allegations and controversies? >> look. >> superpacs play. >> a big. >> role and could play an even. larger role in new york city primaries and general elections. i don't think people should underestimate eric adams capacity as a republican, particularly if the's a heightened maga turnout and a depressed democratic progressive turnout. elections shouldn't be assumed to be guaranteed after a primary. but with that being said, right now andrew cuomo is operating in that moderate lane, and it remains to be seen amongst the six other candidates that are out there right now who will emerge as his principal contender because he's taking most of those eric adams votes in this primary. >> now, charlie, president trump has aggressively inserted himself into new york politics since returning to office,

pardoning mayor adams and attempting to kill congestion pricing here in new york city. his former home. would you expect trump to deal with cuomo now that he's officially trying to become the leader of the country's biggest city? >> well, that's a great question. i think that, you. >> know. >> right now, trump will probably try to intervene. any way he can. it seems. that adams. >> is his preferred candidate. >> obviously. >> he feels he has. >> some. >> leverage over over him because of the impending. >> dismissal of. >> those charges. without prejudice. >> so i. >> have to suspect. >> that trump might intervene in this race, probably to the. >> detriment of cuomo and to the benefit of adams. that would be. my guess today. >> but when you have a multi-candidate crowded. democratic field, as you do here, a lot. >> of things can happen. but advantages go. >> to the guy with the. >> most. >> money and the most name recognition, even if they have some scandal behind them, is the case with with former governor

cuomo. but trump is going. >> to meddle. >> do you think that trump will stay or intervene in some way? >> i do, i look, i that's that's his nature. he he likes to play. he likes to inject himself into fights that are really not his. unlike virtually any other president. most presidents try to avoid nasty fights if they can. trump. he relishes them. he looks. he looks for controversy. most. most politicians try to avoid it because they know it will find them anyway. but in trump's case, he wants the controversy. he'll jump in, and if he thinks he can make a difference and get his preferred candidate, which i think is adams, that's what he'll do. >> you. let me just quickly ask you that. you think eric adams is trump's preferred candidate? >> well, at the moment, well he just well, he's planning to dismiss the charges. he seems to think that he has some kind of a understanding with the mayor about immigration enforcement.

you know, clearly that relationship could go sideways if mayor adams does not cooperate to the extent that the trump administration would like on immigration enforcement. but for now, i would have to think that trump prefers adams. but we'll see who else you know emerges. >> it's what i said in the letter to the judge or the justice department under trump. they wanted the charges dropped because one of the three reasons was because he needs time to work on immigration and violent crimes, which spells to me return to stop and frisk, because that is the president's philosophy on that. i want to turn to that extraordinary meltdown we all witnessed in the oval office yesterday. what was supposed to be a meeting that led to a major new economic deal between the us and ukraine, turned into a shouting match between president trump and zelensky, after which the ukrainian leader was asked to leave the white house. national security adviser mike wallace

from the gop over this debacle in the oval office or trump's radical shift in foreign policy in general. do you think that will change? >> well, i certainly hope republicans find their voice on this. the mistreatment of zelensky yesterday in the oval office was it was disgusting. it was an outrage that this man who was fighting not only for his country's life, but for his own life, would be treated so disrespectfully. people, and of course, many in the maga world, are trying to make it sound like zelensky caused this problem. zelensky apparently triggered trump by suggesting that vladimir putin cannot be trusted in any type of a peace agreement, which is a fact. and now donald trump apparently is trying to shift sides in this war. after three years siding with vladimir putin, with the aggressor over the victim. we had the worst vote ever cast in

the history of the united states at the united nations this week, in failing to condemn russian aggression against ukraine. you know, we're blowing up 80 years of bipartisan foreign policy consensus that made this transatlantic relationship the foundation of american national security policy. trump is going to blow it up to appease putin and try to force zelensky into some kind of a surrender agreement. that would be a disgrace and make us all weaker, both in europe and the united states, and undermine our relationships everywhere in this world among friends. >> max, let me go back to you. elon musk has had a starring role in trump's first cabinet meeting on thursday, though he is not officially a member of the cabinet. musk also just appeared on joe rogan's podcast, a three hour plus interview in which musk claimed his agency discovered massive fraud, abuse and waste in federal government

without any proof or pushback. meanwhile, gop lawmakers back home are facing blowback from their constituents over all these cuts. but trump is sticking by his man, musk. can democrats turn this into a winning issue? >> look, this is the winning issue. democrats should not stand for the status quo or be the grand defenders of waste, fraud and abuse, but they certainly should stand up in opposition to the wealthiest man in the world, giving the president united states $300 million to buy his way into control of the cabinet, buy his way into standing with the president's cabinet, looking like a fool in a t shirt and a hat. same time lying about where the true nature of waste, fraud and abuse is in the government because he's ignoring it. you want to find waste, fraud and abuse. let's look at the tens of billions of dollars that get sent to musk's companies. you want to look at waste fraud.

they're going to come to a park that is not going to be prepared for them. >> as you well know, disruptions in funding can be devastating for national parks. what are your concerns about what's going on right now? >> absolutely. >> well, every. job is important. >> every single job at our national parks are important, right? we have biologists, ecologists. we have folks who who manage parking lots and make sure that trails and roads are safe for visitors to, to drive and hike on. we also have people who, you know, who look out for animals like or people speeding, you know, animals get killed in our national parks. every year. and so we need people to manage. >> those important things. >> they're also people, reverend, who empty trash cans and clean bathrooms so that people can be safe and healthy. and since covid, our national

parks have, you know, visitor has visitation has skyrocketed because people realize how important the outdoors are to the lives they lead. and it will be shameful if national parks have to turn people away because they don't have the capacity to take on that many visitors. it's really a shame that that a billionaire who was who is unelected is calling the shots for firing so many people when he has no clue what they even do. >> i want to turn now to a big concern for native americans across the country. despite birthright citizenship being granted to native americans more than a century ago, many are now finding themselves entangled in trump's immigration enforcement efforts. in fact, a navajo nation citizen was questioned by ice just days ago. what kind of reaction have you been hearing

from the community about trump in his second term? >> yes. of course. you know, he is instilling fear in our children and our immigrant communities here in new mexico. yes, they have questioned native americans about. >> their citizenship. >> there was the mescalero apache tribe had to. >> send out a. >> notification to its members to give them instructions on what to do if they're stopped. this is unprecedented. and then recently, of course, a bus, a bus, you know, taking kids to a sports event was stopped. and the children were intimidated. this is not how we run our communities here in new mexico. every single person deserves dignity and respect. and so i'll say that when, you know, i'm running for governor, when i'm governor, law enforcement in new

mexico is not going to do trump's bidding. in this immigration situation that he has caused and in fact, law enforcement agencies should be doing what they're designed to do, and that is fighting violent crime. >> finally, as you just said, you announced last month you are running to be the next governor of new mexico, and you've already raised $1 million for your campaign. can you talk a little about your vision for the state and what's at stake in this race? >> of course. well, i hopped in the race because i think it's an important time. i think leadership is it real leadership is important in this country right now, and i believe that governors will be the first line of defense against the terrible and chaotic policies that are coming out of washington, dc. so i'm running to change the game for new mexicans and to stand up for all new mexicans. and i would hope that if anyone wants to know more about my campaign, they can go to deb holland.com

>> eight on msnbc. >> this week it was announced that my little sister, joy reid, would be leaving the network, and i've known joy reid since she was working at a radio station in miami, florida, before either of us thought about television. she's a gifted and talented journalist, and she knows i'm her big brother wherever she lands next. we're all going to be praying for her and supporting her. but i was shaken this week by the death of two african american women icons. earlier this week, i received word of the death of roberta flack, the great songstress, the great artist, the great musician roberta flack. i first met when i was 13 years old. she came to brooklyn to a rally for operation breadbasket. the rally was being held by reverend jesse jackson and reverend william jones. i had become the youth director of the local chapter. she always

was as much a freedom fighter as she was a unique, gifted artist. and when we hear the charts claiming her magnitude of hits killing me softly. first time i ever saw his face, it went against what was considered the trend at the time of hard beating r&b. she was smooth and soft, mastered the piano and brought us into a kind of music that showed all cultures us at our best. we are better people and we are better culture because of roberta flack. she will always be missed, but thank god we'll have her voice that we can always turn on and listen to. and then this morning, i learned of the passing of a real freedom fighter that i've been in the trenches with for 35 or 40 years. in my teen years till now. hazel dukes, the former national president of the naacp
