ukraine's president zelenskyy is about to be welcomed at the ukraine summit in london. canadian prime minister justin trudeau arrived just moments ago. britain's keir starmer told zelenskyy yesterday that he's giving him his full backing. congresswoman sara jacobs of california joins us now. she is a member of both the armed services and foreign affairs committees. >> congresswoman, welcome to the table. this morning. you have the realignment of nato, the realignment of the g8, the realignment of our relationship with our allies as they are gathering in europe to put together a plan for peace for ukraine. while the united states sits here alone, isolated, but with their new bosom buddy, mr. vladimir putin. you the. probably the most disturbing part for me is the reaction of

>> all right. the secretary general just arrived. >> the secretary general just. arrived in this conversation in london. your assessment of, as a member of congress, of what you witnessed and what what you think the next posture of this government of the united states should be. because clearly, the government is going in one direction. i still sense the american people are not necessarily moving in that direction. >> well, i think that's right. and look, i think what we saw was shameful and horrible, right? the supposed leader of the free world siding with an autocrat over democracy and over the sort of order that has kept the peace in europe since before any of us were born. even you, michael. thank you. >> way before i was born. >> and so, you know, i think that i think that it's important that we speak up and talk about the importance of this alliance, this nato alliance, why we're

helping ukraine, because it's not just about ukraine, right. it's about standing up for democracy everywhere. and i think it's also important that republicans in congress who know this, who i know in private conversations, are horrified by what happened. speak up and stand up, because they're the only ones who have the ability to push back right now in the real institutional ways that we need. >> i think it's important to note, congresswoman, that the meeting inside. >> the oval office. >> which is, of course, gotten a lot of attention for good reason, is set against the backdrop. of our president threatening tariffs against a variety. of our allies making accusations against. >> europe. >> saying that they are out, that the eu is out to get. >> america, and. >> you have the eu pushing back hard against that notion. this is from the ap. >> the eu was formed to. >> screw anyone, poland prime minister donald tusk said in an ex post. quite the opposite. it was formed to maintain peace, to build respect. >> among our. >> nations, to create free. >> and.

partners like canada and mexico and the eu, the less we're going to be able to work with them on the things that we need to happen and that require partnership across multiple countries. >> the people are wondering how they're just going to afford anything. small businesses, even medium sized businesses, the american people. i mean, honey, now eggs are like a delicacy. when you go to the some grocery stores, you can't even find the egg. yeah. given what is happening. companies are saying, and this is according to new york times, that they might have to raise prices to offset expenses if they haven't already. some companies are talking about a business paralysis. just i don't know if this has been if the american people have connected the two yet that the prices are very high. still, companies might have to raise prices even more. and it's due to the policies of this administration and the president and republicans who are going along with it. how do you connect the dots for the american people in a way that they feel it and understand it,
5:47 am
and want to do something differently at the ballot box? >> yeah. >> so first of all, i think it's important to explain how tariffs actually work, right? tariffs are not actually paid by the country. they're paid by the importing business. the us business that imports that good. which means it's american businesses that are going to be bearing the cost of these tariffs. and that means that american consumers are going to be the ones having to bear that cost, because they're going to pass it down. my state of the union guest is a small business in san diego, who told me her business will basically probably not be able to survive if these tariffs go through. tariffs on food, on canned goods, on meat. not to mention we have a housing crisis in this country and we're about to put tariffs on steel and wood from canada. these things that are incredibly important. so like some tariffs can be useful when they're specific because you want to protect a domestic industry. but these kinds of broad based tariffs are only going to hurt american people. in fact one study says that the average american family is going to have
5:48 am
$2,600 more worth of costs per year just because of these tariffs. not to mention the fact that donald trump has gotten rid of the people who are monitoring avian flu. so we can't even figure out how to fix it, to be able to get the price of eggs back down. >> you mentioned the upcoming speech by the president on tuesday. we've been having a conversation we had. this is former member of the federal government fired, summarily fired by elon musk and donald trump. and there's a growing sentiment out there among the american people about making a statement this tuesday that this is not normal, that members of congress should not be gladhanding and wanting to take their picture with the president as he comes down the aisle and smiles because people are being hurt. families are now finding themselves in very difficult situations. you mentioned you're
5:49 am
going to have a guest there. but there's a growing sentiment that democrats show unity with the country and not attend. what what's your thinking there? and how you are looking at this tuesday's speech? >> yeah. so we're still having conversations as a caucus on exactly what that is going to look like. but we for sure are going to be doing something. and there will be, you know, unity in action. and people will see that we are standing up now. i plan on attending, unless, you know, we all decide otherwise, in part because i think it's important that as donald trump is saying these things, he has to look at us. he has to see us there in the chamber in our house. right. it is in the house of representatives that the speech has. he doesn't get to run us out of our house. we will be there and he will have to say these things to us. now, that doesn't mean that we're not going to be doing actions, but i think the actions will be more meaningful in the room, in our house, in our body, that he doesn't get to decide who gets to come in and out.
