2.0. >> democrats remain in. >> a political wilderness with no clear consensus on how to fight back against the administration. but signs of opposition are multiplying as lawmakers adapt in their own ways. whether it's to break ranks or compromise, fight back or be practical. this week we saw a profile in courage courtesy of texas congressman al green's fiery protests during trump's hostile address to congress, resulting in greene's censure by even some democrats who said he went too far. greene joins me tonight as democrats resistance to trump finally ignites, and some of the president's agenda appears to be finally sputtering as republicans in congress face anger and fear at home over doge
2:02 pm
inflicted cuts. the back and forth on tariffs, and the proposed slashing of the education department. by the way, trump has backtracked for now on all three, and it's reported that he's finally put some kind of muzzle on elon musk, making it clear to the billionaire in an explosive cabinet meeting this week that his administration is running the show democrat of texas. congressman, you emphasized that your spontaneous protest of trump's joint addrese and republicans are proposing to medicaid as they slash through the government. despite that, you were escorted out of the chamber and censored. the president has called you low iq and an embarrassment. and the far right house freedom caucus
2:03 pm
is trying to get you stripped of your committee assignments. i want to remind our viewers that you led the charge in congress to impeach president trump during his first term. do you think that has factored in all of this? >> thank you for having me, reverend. of course i do. i think that the president, who is known for his desire to retaliate, is engaging in what he's known for. and i do believe that we have a responsibility, however, to protect medicaid. medicaid is all many people will have when it comes to health care. in texas, we have about 20% of our population without health care, more than any other state in the country. our children have an uninsured rate that is twice that of the national rate. so we have to protect medicaid. and that was what that was all about, protecting medicaid. and i am prepared to suffer the consequences. protest. peaceful
2:04 pm
protest is about getting in the way, as john lewis put it, and also being prepared to suffer the consequences. but, reverend, that doesn't mean that i have to like the consequences. >> yeah. you know, i heard you say that immediately after the censoring, and i identified with it. you talked about that's how many of us in the civil rights movement behaved. i've been arrested over 30 times, have done three months in jail, 45 days in jail, all for nonviolent protests. and you accept it. and you said you're not angry with speaker mike johnson or members who voted for your senses, which included every house republican and ten democrats, some of whom have complained that the protests during the president's address were uncivil, a mistake and a distraction. but as i recall, you may have two house members with the last name green who protested during recent presidential addresses. the
2:05 pm
only, the black one, is being censored for it. are democrats being too civil during this time when american rights and freedoms are literally on the line? >> reverend, that's a great question. the president recognizes that we are being civil, and he uses his incivility to take advantage of our civility. i was dismayed, disappointed, and quite frankly, i was hurt to see the president of the united states indicate that the democrats were lunatics, that we are lunatics. he did that on national tv at the joint session of congress. he will not be censored or censured. he will not be reprimanded. he will not be in any way placed in any kind of punishment. i think that we are finding ourselves in a position where we have to meet incivility with incivility. now, reverend, he does it to harm and demean, just as he has given me this, this nickname that he thinks is
2:06 pm
going to somehow besmirch my name or my reputation. we do it to uplift people. he he does it to put people down and demean people. that's the difference if you're doing it to uplift, to help people on medicaid, to help people on medicare, social security, save the department of education, protect veterans who are being fired, those who are at the va and working. if you're doing it for these reasons, that's a righteous cause. and i think that we'll have to have an additional incivility, which is another form of peaceful protest. >> now, the democratic response to your protest and census showed just how divided the party is over, not just how to counter trump, but how to craft also a compelling message to american voters ahead of our next election. some democrats have taken a combative stand with trump, or they're using the courts to block his action. other leaders are trying to find places they can compromise with the administration, or focusing
2:07 pm
on pragmatic message that contrasts with trump's chaos. which response is right for this moment, in your view, congressman? >> reverend, allow me to just use this metaphor. i want to leave here. i'm in houston to go to washington, d.c. i'll take a plane. there are some persons who may go by train if they choose. others may go by car. the vehicle is not really the question that we have to cope with as much as it is the destination. we're all moving toward the same destination. some will choose a different vehicle. i think that we have to, at this point, have a combination. we have to have the litigation. we have to have legislation proposed even if it doesn't pass. and then we have to have some agitation. i think that all three will give us the opportunity to metamorphose into a message that will make a difference, and i think that this will give us the opportunity to reclaim the house. i really believe it. and
2:08 pm
when we do, then we will have the opportunity to set the agenda. >> and when you say we will set the agenda, i note that your tie says we the people. now let me go to this issue. nearly 200, nearly 200, 200, i repeat, are cases of measles have been identified by the texas department of state health services in an outbreak that has persisted in the western part of the state for two months now, one unvaccinated child has died. the first measles death in nine years. roughly two dozen people have been hospitalized, and the state is warning that the outbreak will spread as another unvaccinated person has now died from an outbreak in neighboring new mexico. despite all of that, health secretary robert f kennedy jr is worrying doctors by not emphasizing vaccination
2:09 pm
and by promoting fish, oil and vitamins to combat a highly infectious disease. are you confident that this administration is doing everything it can to help fight this outbreak? >> i'm confident that this administration is not in ot, not doing everything that it can. and i'm so pleased. reverend, thank you so much for bringing this up. we have children at risk and we are seeing something that is growing. in terms of the numbers, i would hope that mr. kennedy would step forward and would encourage people to understand that there is a means by which your children can be protected. i have been vaccinated, and if need be, i'll be vaccinated again. i believe that we should not allow ourselves to take up these snake oil remedies for something that science has proven to have a remedy for. at one time we thought we had eliminated measles in this country. now we find ourselves having to fight
2:10 pm
that fight again. and it's because of people like mr. kennedy. i would hope that he would change and that this administration would save lives, as opposed to promoting things that can be harmful to children. >> now, on a on a sad note tonight, politics nation joins texas democrats and the city of houston in mourning the late congressman and former houston mayor sylvester turner, who died at the age of 70 this week. he was on this very show just two days earlier before his death, and just months after he won the seat held by the late congresswoman sheila jackson lee. is there anything you want to share in the congressman's memory, please? >> thank you. he was more than a great state representative who served for more than a quarter of a century, more than a great mayor, served for eight years. he was truly a great human being, a great public servant. he had a hand of friendship for
2:11 pm
everyone that he could help. he got us through hurricane harvey. he helped us through many of the storms of life, however, that we confront here and across the globe. i just want people to know that he was a person whose life ought to be celebrated, and to his family and friends, i send my deepest condolences, and i'll always remember him for his great oratory. and when he would reach his crescendo at the end of his speech, he would always say, to god be the glory for the things he has done. i say to god be the glory for allowing us to have some time with the honorable sylvester turner. >> on that. i want to thank you. texas congressman al green. from texas to wisconsin. joining me now is congresswoman gwen moore, a democrat congresswoman, starting with the president's joint address this week, the house democratic response ran the gamut from quiet disdain to open protest. and some members

susan, let's start with some breaking news on capitol hill, where just days before a possible government shutdown, speaker mike johnson has unveiled a stopgap funding bill that would keep the government running until the end of september. it's unclear whether johnson can muscle it through without some votes on the other side of the aisle and in the backdrop, you have this whiplash approach to economics from the trump administration. for the second time in less than two months, we've seen trump announce tariffs on our two north american neighbors and then backtrack. investors don't know what to think. what impact do you see this having on on the us economy, which, despite how voters saw it last november, was quite strong when trump inherited it. >> rep. >> well. >> let me just. >> add. >> one more. >> date to this conversation. and that's march 12th, two days

before the shutdown. that's when we find out what the inflation numbers are. and this will be the first time the inflation report is totally under donald trump's watch. i've been hearing things that the white house is really, really nervous about this. and i think if they if inflation does tick up, this is an opportunity for democrats to really try and hold johnson's feet to the fire. and at least if they want to, if they want to keep the government open. and i do believe in good faith that that both parties do. but democrats can start looking for something here, because if inflation goes up, you're probably going to see a few more republicans walk away from any type of deal. it will be more than the one vote that we're expecting so far. so we could see a shutdown and democrats will have a to use donald trump's language. they'll have some cards to play. >> ahmed. yesterday, trump hosted a first of its kind

2:34 pm
we're seeing with some of this movement here. we saw, i believe it was eric trump that tweeted buy the dip. right. so taking all of this together, there's a real anti-corruption message that can be sold by democrats here, where you have elon musk targeting key government agencies targeting the va. we see potential cuts to medicaid on, you know, the cbo said they can't reach these benchmarks unless they cut medicaid or social security. so if you're going to sit here, you're going to stockpile a really volatile digital asset. you're going to go ahead and target social programs, and you're going to increase prices on everyday americans. that's a recipe that democrats can sell heading into the midterms that these, you know, oligarchs and these administration officials don't really care about the everyday american. so i think he's handing democrats a really easy message here with all of these different actions taken together. >> susan, the trump administration fired several more veteran career lawyers in the justice department

rights role of the department will be lost. and we know the history. we know that when we see those images of ruby bridges, she's escorted to school by federal marshals, we know the history. if the federal government isn't there to make sure states and districts serve all of their students well, we will see increased violations of students civil rights. >> and when you referred to ruby bridges, you're referring for our audience that may not know to a young black, a young black student, elementary school student who the national guard had to bring her to school because the state had said blacks couldn't go to that school. the danger of states rights is from one state to another. how you deal with inclusion, how you deal with history or curriculum, all of that would be determined differently. now, those who have borrowed money for student loans are scrambling to figure out what to do about their payments. if the education department is no more. about one in every eight americans have student

loan debt. as you've been in a position as secretary of education, can you give insight into what this would mean for student loan borrowers? if the department of education is totaled? >> look. >> if you don't. >> have the department, you will not have the efforts to help student borrowers navigate their debt. already you see the trump administration cutting the employees at the department, whose work is vital to make sure that students can access federal loans, who can access pell grants so that they can go to college. without the department there, folks will struggle to keep up with their payments. the efforts of the biden administration to forgive student debt and to help folks make more reasonable payments, all of that will go by the wayside. but again, this is really up to congress. in the end, congress is going to have

diverse have richer discussions. researchers who are diverse ask more nuanced questions and are more likely to come up with the innovations that are going to improve quality of life for everyone. this is exactly the wrong direction for folks to attack and undermine diversity, equity and inclusion. and at the end of the day, i believe that the teaching of the truth about our history is fundamental to the health of our democracy. when you see schools like some of the department of defense schools going backwards on this, taking books out of the library, taking posters down where you're leaving students with a false impression about history, where they're not going to understand the history of slavery or the civil rights movement that is bad for american civic readiness. >> now, abolishing the department of education is also part of what elon musk's department of government efficiency, or doge, is

prioritizing, as it makes sweeping cuts in the federal government. however, the department's moves to radically reshape the government have made even some in the gop reportedly anxious. do you think doge is acting as effectively as musk claims? what have been your thoughts on what you're seeing out there? >> i'm heartbroken for all of the public servants who are being negatively impacted by what doge is doing. of course, there are ways that government could be made more efficient. there are programs that could be improved. but this is not just acting with a meat cleaver rather than surgically. this is just swinging an ax wildly about. you see, veterans who are serving in the government losing their jobs. you see threats to air traffic safety. and at the education department, you see dedicated career civil servants, many of whom were teachers and principals themselves, who are

and others led that. but because the world saw that brutality, it led to the 1965 voting rights act, just as after the great march on washington the year before, when four girls were killed by bombs in birmingham, alabama. it helped lead to the civil rights act. sometimes it's our duty to take pain and turn it into power, to take what looks like an incident and show that it is systemic. and now, as we face the greatest challenge to voting rights that i've seen, people are legislating different things and different states, different requirements, all to deny people their right to vote and their protection. we go back not just to commemorate, but to also continue to fight, to protect voting rights. as a minister, i read often in the bible where it says remove, not the ancient landmarks. the
