senator dodd, his wife and their young daughters. the personal life aside, you heard senator dodd make the point that he's lucky that he has a health care our lawmakers have and wants to give that to the american people. >> he's got an opportunity to use something from his own life to make an argument he was already making, that lawmakers have been making about the kind of care that congress gets and how that compares to the public. it's a little bit of a comparison. obviously, there's not an attending physician in everyone's house, but the point remains the same. he's got good health care. he got a screening apparently and found this, not because of an issue, but because of regular screening. >> so he masterfully rigs this debate with his own struggle.

i thought he was saying, i'm not out of this game. >> he'll be back before he goes away. he's got a small business round table in hartford with kathleen sebelius on monday. so we're going to be hearing more about him, more about health care from him even before he goes down to have surgery and recover, which is only going to be a couple of weeks. he plans to be back before the august recess is over, working on health care. his committee's already done his work on the bill. they're waiting for the senate finance committee and house of representatives to join them in getting something done. >> i think this is an examine principle. a prime example of preventive medicine. i think people without health care, this is something -- he

first six months in office. the administration will take a look at what's been accomplished and agenda ahead. two of the top priorities, health care and a economy. and yes, there are signs the recession is easing. today, the commerce department announced the economy contracted at a pace of just 1% in the second quarter. better than expected and much better than the first quarter. also, the dow jones is on track for its best july in 20 years. president obama says he's guardedly optimistic, but will not rest until it is fixed. >> it took us many more months to fully dig ourselves out of recession that we now know was even deeper than anyone thought, but i will continue to work every day and take every step necessary to make sure that happens. >> mike viqueira at the white

house and they know you can talk, but until people get to work and we see a slow down in the loss of jobs, it won't hit home. >> all the academics and economists are fond of saying it's a lagging indicator, but that doesn't give anybody any traction. 15% in places like michigan as we speak. the president's ever mindful of that, always reminding folks that it is a lagging indicator. the gdp might go into a decline. but still, the unemployment rate is expected to recover more slowly. that is typical of every recession and that has been noted as the worst since the great depression. yes, the president will walk over for dinner -- we'll having

taking credit. he said this little kind of jump, stopping, was a result of his stimulus programs and a lot of economists think it's too early for that. there was to me, some real dark clouds there. it came back to the consumer. the consumer spending fell at 1.2%. consumer confidence dropped from 49 to 46 and the consumer's psyche is still broken. even though employment has been a lagging indicator, this has been a credit-inspired crisis. >> i'm sorry. i'm very concerned, too. let me just answer that. i think no matter -- you interpret it as -- they are very eager. they've been talking about green

because i know our senators support it, i hope that if you want to take advantage of this, that you call your senator and let them know that it's important for the economy as well as for the consumer's pocketbooks. >> the best thing about this, it was creative. fresh, revolutionary. hopefully, this will inspire lawmakers to not just think about how we dole out money. it was smart business. along those lines, shouldn't we test the price elasticity of this? i wonder if they only saved 1 or 2,000, they'd still be making the trades? >> whatever it takes to enshoor that people are putting money back into the economy and cars are being purchased. every million cars sold in this country represent 50,000 jobs that are supported by that. so talk about a multiplier affect. whatever it takes to get that

affect going, especially, and i would put a plug in here to buy american, by the companies that have been supported by taxpayer dolla dollars, what a great impact that has, too. >> we were just talking to mike viqueira about the recession and about signs shows the economy is getting better. what will it take for folks in michigan to really accept that maybe good times, or better times, i should say, are on the way. >> there is no doubt that employment is the evidence. that's the real indication that the economy has rebounded. we hear about the gdp and that is nice, but on the ground, we haven't seen it yet. we know, i know, and a lot of people understand, that employment is a lagging piece of evidence. we probably aren't going to -- it's going to get worse in fact before it gets better. in michigan, for example, the

auto suppliers are still reeling from the shutdowns of factories over the summer and bankruptc s bankruptcies. i'm not sure how many of those will be able to rebound unless they diversify. i think the employment, when we start to see an uptick in employment, that's when people will feel the effects of the economy rebounding. >> thank you very much. >> thanks. doesn't think of themselves as a lagging indicator. the president was saying nobody's going to rest. >> what similar initiative like cash for clunkers does the administration need to look at? this blew people away. >> it was literally boom, the next day. what else can we do to insent vise customers to move and spend? what would a retailer do or actual business? i think the more we bring in

real business, i was still d disappointed that he doesn't have any business people. these are guys that know how to make it happen. the investigation into michael jackson's death. the neck is widening and as a result, the coroner's office has indefinitely delayed the results of the autopsy. we're expecting the report now sometime next week, but no word on when we, the public, will actually know what killed michael jackson. search warrants issued at the home and offices of conrad murray show officials are trying to determine what relationship murray had with other doctors who treated michael jackson. the search warrant also says -- and quote, addict. tonight, josh reports in a special dateline.

people are now talking about dr. conrad murray, his amount of debt and how there is speculation that this would be incentive for a doctor to work for michael jackson and give him the drugs he wanted. >> that's true. i think one of the questions being asked is whether or not the $150,000 a month salary would be negotiated. one of the things we're going to report tonight was that dr. murray had serious misgivings about whether to give mr. jackson propofol. he and jackson had a discussion of that which ended with dr. murray going ahead, over his own better judgment. dr. murray made that admission to police in the days following the investigation. the whole question about this is not just about propofol. it's about other drugs that were prescribed to jackson. >> they found --

>> investigators found what looked like jackson's private pharmacy. a collection of medicines. some with labels, some without. sources say all of it led police to at least seven medical professionals. >> we are executing the search warrant on these medical offices. >> reporter: in houston, las vegas, and beverly hills, investigators have been looking through medical records, trying to reconstruct the long trail of drugs that leads from michael jackson to the doctor or doctors who gave them to him. >> right now, police are looking at about seven medical professionals. that doesn't necessarily mean they're going the find anything. it's also possible those toxicology tests will exonerate dr. murray. we're just going to have to wait and see. >> his entire defense, if there

ever was a manslaughter charge, is going to be hinged on the fact that it was a combination of drugs that this doctor was not in control of. sounds like a pretty strong defense. >> there's just no way to tell. we don't know what the tests are going to conclude. one of the final tests they were performing just a few days ago was the synergistic tests. >> thank you and you can catch an all new, two-hour "dateline" tonight. it still doesn't explain the diprivan, propofol, which was not supposed to be in the house. >> i don't think you'd ever want a doctor, lawyer, anybody in your life where they're entire financial status is built on you because then they can't make the

four of the nations most powerful ceo found out there's no such thing as a free lunch at the white house. >> according to politico, they were charged for their meal. the white house defended the move as a way to avoid conflict of interest. they ate in the president's private dining room, just steps away from the oval office. the white house did not say what was served. the spokeswoman said the staff collected the ceos' credit cards

heading into the closing bell, we have strength across the board with the dow jones industrial average up about 40 points. a new government report proving to be the strongest signal that the recession may be winding down. the government says the economy sank at just 1% this quarter. chevron took a big hit saying it fell 20%. and there is good news for "the washington post." it made a profit in the latest quarter. that's it from cnbc. now back to msnbc. welcome back. in the big picture, sarah palin

will not attend a republican women's event at the reagan library next month. a couple of weeks ago, the committee said palin was scheduled to attend the group's 50th anniversary gala, but a statement was released on her facebook page that reads -- and even requested her name be removed. that's the quote. >> in the bigger picture, where the sarah palin? where's waldo? it's been five days since she stepped down as governor of alaska and she's been laying low. she's been unusual quite on twitter after spending the last few months posting tweets.

a new poll shows alaskans are divided. that's a drop from just a couple of months ago when palin had a 54% approval rating. norah o'donnell, she was in alaska when palin stepped down and the new governor was sworn in. maybe she's got nothing to say. is that possible? >> quit making things up. >> thanks, norah, thanks. >> you're right. a couple of interesting things. she's gone dark for five days. she got very prolific, using her blackberry to tweet all the time. that was an official account. she doesn't have that anymore. and then is reversal, saying she's not going to be attending this fund-raiser for a group of

republican women in california that was supposed to be at the ronald reagan presidential library. you read that statement that her spokesperson sent to me last night, which made it sound like she never committed to attend this. i just went back and checked my e-mail to make sure and in fact, here's that meg sent me on monday, where i asked her to please clarify and she wrote this. we may attend, we may not attend. but also pointed out she asked the group not to put her name on the invitation because they had not committed. they are unable to just say no, and sort of leave these groups hanging, just like they left the republican group here in washington hanging. it speaks a lot of the sarah

palin. that's stunning. 48% now view her negatively. you know what her ratings were in john mccain chose her? 86%. and now, her positive ratings down below 40. >> current governor, 69% positive. >> but this is fascinating. this is the second big event that you have palin spokes people being coy about. sarah palin will be here, and they are, i believe, embarrassed by this. this is been one of the criticisms. she listened to todd palin, is sort of paranoid, and her handlers are not serving her well by not having a more trained, seasoned team around her. >> she promises straight talk,

why do so many republicans still have doubts about president obama's citizenship? maybe because they're morons. a research -- i'm not supposed to be objective. >> i'll show you some of the factual numbers out there that are interesting. a poll conducted for the lib cal daily blog, finds a majority of republicans polled think the president was not born in the united states or are not sure. 42% of americans believe he was born in the u.s., but 22% say he is not an american citizen. 30% say they're not sure. david, let me start with you.

who is to blame for 42% of republicans not believing despite the birth certificate and other proof, a governor of hawaii even saying that president obama was born in hawaii and is an american citizen. >> people are people, regardless of ideology. let me tell you about another poll taken two years ago. this was 2007. democrats on whether 9/11, whether president bush knew in advance about the 9/11 attacks. 35% of democrats said he did. 26% weren't sure. the only -- >> i'll give you that. there are always conspiracy theorys out there, but i think the thing that bothers people about the birther movement is because of the racial tinge behind it. >> i think these people are

crazy. >> obama was born in the united states. if you go to your courthouse, you'll get the same kind of printout that he's showing everybody. the burden of proof is on anybody who wants to show otherwise. i can't get any better proof showing i was born in the united states than he's showing there. you have to call it what it is. the fact that even 28% of republicans think he wasn't born in the state i think is disturbing enough. people are people. when you're out of power, just like the democrats did in 2006, you cling to fantasies about how can you change it. as far as is -- i don't know. that's pretty much of a stretch, i think. >> what's even scarier than the polls are some of our elected officials. right now, there are 11 that want to sponsor a bill that

welcome back. in today's crossing the line, he's been called the love gov, irresponsible, and derelict. also been calls for mark sanford to step down. while everything i have listed may have been fair game, today's development in what is the saga of sanford might be a little bit much. well, the associated press was able to obtain a copy of a letter sanford wrote to his religious adviser. it was written from his state computer, so thea p was able to get it, through a public records request. the letter was written may 20th before his infamous trip to argentina. in the letter sanford wrote, i simply beg for a chance to figure it out privately. please beg her for just the
