tv   Countdown With Keith Olbermann  MSNBC  August 6, 2009 10:00pm-11:00pm EDT

10:00 pm
"bill o'reilly is a disgrace to american owe sight. he is full of blank. this is not a debate, it's a civil war. and the other people are using bullets and bombs. i think owe israeli is a fascist and he would fit right in nazi germany as far as i'm concerned." all that and more right now on "countdown." good evening from new york. a smear campaign that has nothing to do with new york. take party protestors coordinated by the health care industry now revealing that the fear being stoked seems to have far more to do with anger over who won the last presidential election than it does who does or does not have health care insurance. . obama meeting with six senators about the health care bill that appears to be stuck in their limited negotiations.
10:01 pm
democrat max baucus talking about a democrats-only bill if republicans won't come aboard. "if republicans aren't there, it could get to a point where democrats may have to go in a different direction. i hope not, but we have to face facts." i know. after he said that, some of us were making sure he had i.d. that he was max baucus. now more about the man senator baucus met today, the president than the health care reform the president is trying to enact. in a st. louis town of missouri, the friendly crowd loving it when he talked about the lynching democrats are receiving at their own events. >> the difference of town hall meetings where they almost got lynched.
10:02 pm
this does not mean i'm approving lynchings. the point is people are really upset at some of his legislation and for very good reason they were upset. >> mr. aiken, never assume. largely upset because of the misinformation they had been fed by the republican spin and astroturf groups born by the health care industry. congressman aiken did not take any questions from his audience. an unruly crowd, ross the leader of the blue dogs when those congressmen took question at, a's children hospital in little rock. one woman nearly reduced to tears because she fears her america has been taken away. >> i am an american citizen. i hate what my america has turned into. i want it back.
10:03 pm
i don't think representatives and senators are going to be able to do it. i'm scared. >> we talk tonight with our own jonathan alters. is the fear, is that scare that is in evidence at that meeting and other town hall meetings, is it about the health care plan or fear and anger about the man who won the presidential election november last? and is there an odd sense here we could have been looking at these side yos from something that came from a mccain/palin rally? >> it does seem reminiscent of some of those rallies. they are right on the edge there advocating violence or other kind of things. there is kind of a crack in the commonsense of america right now. in some ways this is good for passage of the bill. if we didn't hear about all this and the anger and wackiness of some of these town meetings, we might confuse what is going on
10:04 pm
there with american public opinion. we are now at a point where we are beyond that. i think in some ways the backlash has set in against these town meetings and the behavior we are seeing there. it won't have any effect of derailing the bill. there might be bigger problems like the big deficit numbers that are going to come out tomorrow. i don't think these town meetings will send everything off track. >> if republicans like mr. aiken are able to make jokes about lynching, might the white house actually be preparing to go this alone without republicans? is that what that meeting with the six republican senators was about today? >> he does not want to have to go there, but it may be like the stimulus. there might be a few republicans in the senate and in the house they gotten in. that could possibly happen. the bigger problem the democrats have right now is with the blue
10:05 pm
dog democrats. they've got to hold them in line. what you have is the republicans are the party of no and the democrats need to be the party of yes. they can argue about the details, but the idea of sustaining the status quo is unacceptable. democrats need to come out and say we need a bill. argue about what will be in it, but don't talk about no bill. >> some of them are, no better word for it, so dense as to be amazing. do you want to back some of these things? nobody ever hears the debunkings. the first one is from the arkansas town hall and this is standard. >> like 100% of americans in
10:06 pm
america. 80% of us have insurance. might be more. i'm just saying why do 80% of us have to change and get something that y'all have forgotten that president obama who came in with an agenda -- >> yeah! >> why do we have to change our way of life for that 20%? congress' job is mainly to protect us from terrorists, enemies, the borders. >> this is -- there are two elements here. i've got mine so screw you. i'm already in the row boat, you can swim argument. it's also you are going to change my insurance thing. it's not based on fact. >> she is right 80% have health care. where she is wrong is somehow if they've got it, it's going to be enough for them or they are not going to be in danger of losing
10:07 pm
it should they lose their job. a lot of people are losing their jobs. what she is not factoring in is what happens to people who have some sort of change that happens in their lives. they get sick, they need health insurance and it ends up being like homeowners insurance, where once you have a burglary, suddenly they cancel your insurance. that is what health insurance is like. people who have not had big health challenges as i have had and others don't understand just because you are insured doesn't mean you are protected. second thing she is ignoring is the promise president obama made which is if you are happy with your insurance, it's not going to be taken away. if she loves her insurance company, got bless her. they might jack up their premiums on her again. >> or lower it because there is competition from the public option. >> frankly, she must be confused. she looks like a medicare
10:08 pm
recipient. i love folk whose say stop socialized medicine, but don't touch my medicare. >> i hate to break it to you, but -- this next one hits on an actual problem. >> i don't have health insurance because congress will not open up the free competition of insurance companies across state lines. i trade in and out of health company stocks, unitedhealth care and i'm making good money at it because you are members of those stocks. >> beside the fact he seems to be making money off the insurance industry here which seems to be the headline in his statement, he is correct because blue cross-blue shield holds 3/4 in arkansas. obama said he would keep the insurance companies honest. what is the answer to his question? >> there has to be a cooperative
10:09 pm
one that can withstand pressure from insurance companies, which in the past taken something like blue cross which was originally nonprofit and turned it into another insurance company. the problem with the co-op idea they have been putty in the hands of insurance companies. there is still room for compromise there. there could be a public/private option that satisfies enough people to get something through. liberals shouldn't go public option or bust. there are other alternatives. there are many, many important things in this bill that have become noncontroversial that two years ago, if you had been told they are going to end discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions, they are going to insurance another 30 million americans, great, where do we sign up? now some progressives are maybe
10:10 pm
a little bit too wed to the public option, even though i favor it, too, we shouldn't go down with the ship with the public option. >> as we discussed that narrow debate, maybe the super co-op is the public option, there is still an undercurrent to all this about something that actually isn't in the bill, though thousands of millions of people think it is, the single payer system. >> mike and i do not support a single payer system. we are not interested in a single payer system. >> that's bull. >> we don't support a single payer system. >> that is what obama wants. >> it is not what obama wants. >> yes, it is! >> the congressman then spends 9 1/2 hours to convince the crowd the public option is not in the bill nor -- or that the single payer system is not in the bill. fox spends 24 hours a day saying it is in the bill.
10:11 pm
the right-wing machine has scored a victory here. >> yes. they shout all day that this is a trojan horse for single-payer plan. it is possible that over time this will morph onto something that resembles single payer. it's not right now. insurance companies are in no danger going out of business under this bill, under any version of this bichlt if we do end up with a single payer plan, it won't be for many years. people are just lying about the particulars of this program. obama, by design, did not move to single payer because he realized the country wasn't ready for it. >> we have news cash for clunkers just passed. we'll get to that in detail in a minute. the last questioner went into
10:12 pm
this long diatribe asserting the president would get his legislation past without congress. he would get it passed because he is, obviously, dictator obama, not the president. >> i don't believe sincerely, i don't believe that the constitution of the united states of america is going to be upheld in this issue. >> we seem to have come full circle here. paranoia, anger and my america. how did people get convinced they are going to be burned at the stake, is that what they are expecting to have happen here? >> any time you have wrenching social change, which this will bring. this is a big piece of legislation. you are going to have a lot of folks be anxious about it. in that sense i'm sympathetic to this woman.
10:13 pm
if you pay close attention, you realize this is very much along the median strip of american politics. it's not out to the left, certainly not out to the right. it's not going to make a huge difference in most people's lives. all it's going to do is give people more choice. hopefully lower costs over time, even though it will cost more initially. and the fear all of us should have of what happens to us, should we lose our jobs and get sick, for us to discriminate against people who are ill, that is the real outrage that has to be ended this fall. >> you just used the phrase that should have been used all along. we are discriminating against people that are ill. >> it's a civil rights issue. >> it is. >> it's also a security issue. people should not have to worry. this was the theme of fdr's
10:14 pm
presidency. you know i'm obsessed with that. social security meant collective security internationally. this is health security. people shouldn't have to worry about this. it's bad enough to be sick without having to worry about how you are going to pay for it. that is what barack obama's own mother went through during the end of her life. it's wrong americans have to endure that in 2009. >> jonathan alter, thank you for helping us nail the lies to the wall. and the cash for clunker program. the senate in its final act before recess passed a bill for $2 billion additional funding, a vote 60-37. the house overwhelmingly approved that, moving the money from other stimulus funds. many republicans tried to defeat the house version with its numerous amendments. those rebates up to $4,500 with new cards and the trade of

the right called her a racist, wasn't that smart. they said she decided case is not based on law, but personal ideology. the fourth on countdown, the confirmation of judge sonia sotomayor to the supreme court came and without with neither a republican bang or whimper. did the democrats just win something? didn't they just stave off the attack? shouldn't that give them what we call quaintly backbone?
10:20 pm
judge sotomayor becoming justice sotomayor. 59 democrat, senator kennedy unable to attend and nine republicans, graham, alexander, bond, snowe, greg and boynavich voting to confirm ms. sotomayor. the third woman to ever sit on the court. minnesota's junior senate with "the call." >> on this vote the yeas are 68 and the nays are 31. the nomination of sonia sotomayor of new york to be an associate justice of the supreme court of the united states is confirmed. >> meantime, the president on the importance of that vote today. >> with this historic vote, the senate has affirmed that judge sotomayor has the intellect, the temperament, the history, the integrity and the independence of mind to ably serve on our nation's highest court. i'm filled with pride in this achievement, and great confidence that judge sotomayor will make an outstanding supreme court justice. this is a wonderful day for

10:22 pm
was no, you know, last-minute self-immolation, i mean, there were the nine votes. does this take the gloss off what would ordinarily be a political triumph for the new president, your first supreme court nominee and they get 2/3 of the vote, one way or the other? >> true. a little bit. washington is kind of like wall street in way. all about expectations and whether you beat expectations or not and the fact we all knew this was going to be a bit of a snooze, this vote today, means that it does take a little bit of -- takes a little bit of the shine off of obama's victory here. you know, even tonight we're still mostly talking about health care and that debate. so, yeah. i think you're right about that. >> the republicans did not throw everything they had at her the way they did at the stimulus or are doing at health care. but will the fact that they sort of flat lined at the end be of some encouragement to democrats? because i don't think anybody would disagree democrats do not seem very comfortable with having a large majority in the senate?
10:23 pm
>> well, they had a weird strategy at the end. seems that republicans, they voted overwhelmingly against her, but at the same time they stopped talking about it publicly. so it seemed like they realized that there was a certain audience they wanted to know that they were voting against sotomayor, mostly conservative republicans, especially for those who are up for re-election next year and might have a tough primary fight, but with the broader public and certainly with the hispanic voters, seemed they wanted to be quiet about what they were doing on sotomayor. >> robert menendez on think, republicans voted no. to say you can't vote sends a message to us as a community that we will not forget. will the democrats forget? will the hispanic population forget? >> democrats are not going to let hispanic voters forget this for sure. you know, you have two big issues with the last five years where republicans have been on
10:24 pm
the wrong side of -- of a vote, hispanic voter interest. one is immigration reform and now this sotomayor vote. and you know, you have eight years of a republican white house single-mindedly obsessed with winning the respect of the party and six months later, the administration is gone, their approval rating is in the toilet. going to take a long time to repair that. >> counting on the average life span of elderly white people to increase to 220. ryan, sorry to cut you off. thanks. >> no problem. thanks. hi, western union i'd like to send a ram gram, please. how they rescued the thing and how it got there it's okay now. and trying to rescue another horned thing. worst persones a head on "countdown." s a head on "countdown."

reason for firing was bragging and gloating about his kill. from a former executive sworn declaration, "mr. prince intentionally deployed to iraq certain men who shared his vision of christian supremacy. knowing and wanting these men to take every opportunity to murder iraqis. prince knew the men being deployed were not suitable candidates for carrying legal weaponry but did not care because deployments meant more money. supervisors sent men back to the states for reasons including they wanted to kill rag heads or rack up body counts, for excessive drinking, steroid use, failure to follow rules for lethal weaponry. mr. prince and his executives would send them back to be deployed to iraq with express instructions to supervisors to stop costing the company money. one supervisor put the shooter to bragged about his kill on the do not use list, xe took him off the list and put him back on the street. overrules those who raced warning flags firing them as well, terminated mental health professionals not willing to endorse deployments of unfit men.

the lawsuit itself claims trial will show xe attained and distributed 12r0ids, and kept his enterprise unruly by having young girls provide oral sex to enterprise members in the blackwater camp in exchange for one american dollar. john doe two's declaration, frequently visited the camp during a trip overseas, failed to stop uses of prostitutes including child prostitutes by his men. the company xe denies everything. in late 2007, mr. prince told congress his company did nothing wrong. >> every life whether american or iraqi is precious. i stress to the american public, however, that i believe we acted appropriately at all times. >> just as he denied smuggling 900 weapons to two xe workers then pleaded guilty. just as he denied wrongdoing in the 2007 massacre of 17 unarmed iraqis in baghdad to which one of his shooters pleaded guilty admitting the iraqis were innocent. some running away or with hands up. still getting u.s. dollars for its last contract there, blackwater is two years later

best named economic adviser, a notion tax cuts to the rich stimulated the company and the creator of the farcical laugher curve and now shows how stupid he or other critics of health care reform believed this. how stupid they are about this topic. "if you like the post office and the department of motor vehicles and you think they are run well, just wait until you see medicare, medicaid and health care done by the government." hate to break this to you. no matter how many private companies might be involved in medicare and medicaid, they're all done by the government. they're government programs. this also just in, dr. lavor, limbburg has landed safely back in paris. arthur, putting the laugh back in laugher. today's worst person! taking its rightful place

it was alex huxley who noted that facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored. gop accusing obama white house of collecting personal data of its political opponents. remember the irony award? biggest cheerleaders of the bush domestic spy program is suddenly worried about your privacy in an effort to debunk the lies circulating about health care reform such as the obama plan will kill your elderly aunt mildred, an outreach program a posting of online call to action, a lot of disinformation about health care spanning out of control from personal finances toned health care. if you get an e-mail or see something on the web fishy, send it to flag@whitehouse.gov. and today's paranoia, jon cornyn's texas, compiling an enemy list one e-mail address at a time. the truth proposal, another example of obama spyware. he wrote to the president, you should not be surprised this

raises the suspect of a data collection program. i can only imagine the level of justified outrage as your president asks americans to forward e-mails critical of his policies for the white house. should mention the predecessor and the issue of senator because you seem to be all for president bush's warrantless wiretapping program noting back in 2005, none of your civil liberties matter much after you're dead. and joining me, democratic strategi strategist. >> good evening, keith. >> let me start with that crucial point. assuming cornyn is right and he's not, aren't all these internet addresses accessible because of bush the -- or was he only spying on democrats? >> i hope he wasn't only spying on democrats. it would raise questions about the bipartisan spirit of the bush administration. i hope that's not the case. you've got to take what senator cornyn says with a grain of salt. after all, senator cornyn last month raised the specter of the threat from india to justify more funding for the f-22. i mean, in fairness, should have

justified the threat from canada given the health care debate. take everything he says and put it in a different perspective. >> but this one is particularly juicy, because he defended data mining without people's knowledge during the bush years, but he's now opposed to voluntary sending of white house e-mails, because they might contain e-mail addresses of people who sent out e-mails full of disinformation. just -- i mean, nobody tapped him on the shoulder and said this looks really bad, senator? >> you know, put aside the fact that the white house made clear no one's name or address is going to be collected, the point here to respond to the viral lies and misperceptions we know are already out there that are being fed by these various grass roots groups, calling them a nice name, and that i think is a very smart strategy from the white house. we live in a 24/7 media environment. these viral lies can spread very fast. it is important, i think critical, from the white house

perspective, the democrats' perspective to respond, know about them and respond to them hard and fast. >> to that point, also, republicans use fear of terrorism to make parts of the constitutional optional. you know that. we know that from years of vivid personal experience. now using fear of government intrusion to try stop the white house from correcting a record on health care reform. when do the democrats take control of this particular part of message and call the gop out not just on fear mongering, in this case, on sheer stupidity? >> the real battle we'll see play out in the next four-plus weeks especially over this hiatus during the summer. there's a silver lining to the tea baggers, birthers, angry, fake angry mobbers. i think it's really impassioned the people out there, the overall majority of americans that want health care reform. the formal strategy coming out of the white house and the congress you'll see is an aggressive response and you're seeing a lot of americans speaking out and saying this is not reflective of what they

believe. we actually want health care reform. wa want to actually deal with the crisis ignored for decades, >> did cornyn just in pass iing, briefly give away something he shouldn't have said? talking about the town hall uprising, saying a good thing. saying fear, i would say, perceives anger and a lot of people tell me they are scared of what they see coming out of washington. should we be anticipating that for the next two years, four years? that you have nothing to fear but all fears we can make you think of? >> yes. the reality is, fear is the republican party's favorite four-letter word. that's all they have. they have no idea, no alternatives opinion look at the health care debate. they've offered nothing sustentative. this is all about scaring people. it's unfortunate. this is where we have to respond aggressively and i think that's where you'll see from the white house, from the democrats. >> put an asterisk to your observation about four-letter words. that does not include governor hanson or senator ensign.

>> thank you. that's "countdown" for this 2,299th day since the president declared victory in iraq. good night, and good luck. 9:00 p.m. and now to discuss the stifling debate of health care in town halls, ladies and gentlemen, here is rachel maddow. >> good evening. a stifle sounds like something awful you use to get before inoculations. >> archie bunker used to get stifled on a regular basis. >> thank you very much, keith. nice to see you. thank you for tuning in. timothy phillips is the president of an organization called americans for prosperity. he will join us this hour, as keith said. the group that mr. phillips is head of is one of those groups we have reported this week as a corporate affiliated organizer of the anti-health care reform uprisings that are happening in places that used to host civic discourse. we're very glad that mr. phillips agreed to be here and he'll join us here live shortly. we begin tonight with a new ugly term and what was already a pretty ugly politician situation.

the wave of angry mobs dispatched to shut down town hall meetings about health care reform appears to be attacking from aggressive rudeness toward aggressive violence. congressman brad miller, a democrat of north carolina, has received death threats over his position on health care. congressman miller's commune communication director talking points memo today, "the call to the d.c. office was, miller could lose his life over this." congressman brian baird of washington, joining us live in a moment, also announced that he won't be scheduling any town hall meetings over the august recess because of what he called "a lynch mob mentality out there. there is an ugliness to it," he said. and for evidence of that ugliness, well, congressman from maryland, he was
