(announcer) don't take boniva if you have low blood calcium, severe kidney disease or can't sit or stand for at least one hour. follow dosing instructions carefully. stop taking boniva and tell your doctor if you have difficult or painful swallowing, chest pain or severe or continuing heartburn, as these may be signs of serious upper digestive problems. if jaw problems or severe bone, joint, and/or muscle pain develop, tell your doctor. i've got this one body, and this one life, so i wanted to stop my bone loss. but i did more. i reversed it with boniva.

kristi? >> well, hopefully it tells us the direction that she was taken. did she go north, south, east, west. it was found 3.5 miles from where the abduction site is believed to have been. so that tells you something. we obviously would have liked her to have kept the phone on her so the pings would help find her. there is lessons in every one of these. where you're 8 or 38 years old, if you're walking by yourself, somebody stop, tries to pull you over to their car, the first thing you do is run the opposite direction from what that car is pointed so they have to turn around to shlaes you. number two, if you've got a cell phone, get some information out. it's two guys, they're in their 20s, driving a white chevy van, it's got georgia license plates on it, you know, a little bit of information like that and a little bit of forethought on the part of a woman or a man as to what do i do if somebody will try to day ta me, that could alleviate situations just like this. >> how do investigators figure out if this was random or an

1-800-597-8477. the president's personal pitch for health care reform. president obama will address a crowd in colorado at 6:15 p.m. in his address to the nation this morning, the president says that he welcomes debate over his plan. >> i know that there are some folks who leave that government should have no role at all in solving our problems. these are legitimate differences worthy of the real discussion that america deserves. one where we lower our voices, listen to one another, and talk about differences that really exist. >> for more now on whether lowered voices will prevail today, i'm joined by chuck todd. another good morning to you, chuck. >> reporter: good morning. >> let's get to emotions running pretty high on both sides of the debate overall. it's clearly been a tough sell for the president. if we use yesterday's town hall meeting as an example of what's to come, do you think the president is going to be successful at getting the public
9:07 am
on his side? >> well, i think that's still up in the air. and it's interesting that you asked the question that way. the second question that you could be asking is he going to get some form of health care reform passed and i think he'll definitely get that done. here's why maybe what's happening this month might actually benefit him over the next two months when congress comes back into session. and that is this attention that conservatives and republicans have gotten on the right, it may have awakened or at least the white house hope hos it has awakened their core supporters. yesterday the president sounded as if he was at a campaign rally again. he said i need you out there knocking on doors, fight the fear he kept saying. so he's trying to get people to his side to mobilize as strongs as the perception is that the right is doing. >> the president also playing a little bit of media critic here
9:08 am
because if n. his weekly address, he talked about what he said yesterday and that is television loves a ruckus. so are we going to be hearing more about that? >> reporter: oh, yeah. the president loves to pick on cable news. he's done it throughout both the campaign and he does it as president, talks about it all the time, talks about the 24 hour news cycle. evening his staff pays very close attention to it and there are frustrations. we did an analysis of the town hallses that we had cameras at over the last week and it was something like 17 of the 23 had no interruptions, had nothing that you could call as sort of a contentious back and forth, that they were very easily -- there were disagreementses, but they were done with decorum held. >> what about the ticketing? who is coming to this event and how much does the white house have concern that you're going to get a bunch of ruckus out
9:09 am
there is? is there a control element in this? >> reporter: i don't know if there's a control element or if there is this idea that people are just not going to be -- get in the face of the president. and get all hot and bothered in front of the president that they would a member of congress. particularly for this coming town hall in grand junction, you signed up, you had to sign up online, and then you were randomly chosen and they got folks that are attending the town hall will get a phone call or probably already have gotten a phone call saying you have a ticket, come pick it up. with the montana one yesterday, they did that one a little bit differently, they handed tickets out for about a two hour window and it was first come first serve and individuals could get up to two tickets, meaning you don't know who the second ticket was going to go to. >> kind of fun to wake occupy a saturday morning and go what are you doing today? i don't know. i'm going go hear the president. it is kind of cool. although do you it every day. >> reporter: one quick thing on
9:10 am
that front. you see criticisms saying he's only got supporters. guess what? his supporters will be more motivated to wait in line and stay up late to make sure they get a ticket probably who are so than opponents. >> and you have point. chuck todd, thank you so much. you can watch the president's town hall live at 6:15 p.m. eastern. we'll have it right here on msnbc saturday. mean time, developing now, a large explosion in kabul near the nato headquarters. that blast was caused by a suicide car bomb. the explosion has killed seven and injured more than 90. we'll have more on the ongoing situation in afghanistan later on this hour and talk to cornell jack jacobs. stay tuned for that. we have new details on that midair crash between a small plane and helicopter over the hudson river in new york city. two air traffic controllers have now been suspended for their behavior last saturday. of course the day of the disaster that killed nine people. the faa says one of the controllers was on a personal

9:12 am
when you talk to firefighters, you explain that a little bit, 15% contained of a bigger fire is stirl a much bigger fire. it's 5,000 acres. yesterday it was about 4100 acres. so firefighters still have a lot of work to do here. this fire we understand is still within two miles or so of about 1,000 structures. and the concern as you mentioned are those erratic winds. today firefighters expect them to come from the north. so it's going to be coming over a land mass. they say that -- because of that, it will be much warmer, so the concern there is it's going to warm the entire area and the direction it's gusting in or it may gust in is in the direction of the town of bon thi do you know, which is about item mails or so north of sapt cruinta cru. but that's not the only concern that firefighters have. >> the fuels, the terrain, the

difficulty of access all make it difficult. heavy timber, not very easy to combat with engines. it requires aircraft, hand crews, bulldozers. it's very difficult to put out with a fire engine taking a hose trying to skirt down red wood trees is a difficult task. >> reporter: there is a lot of dry brush up in there and lots of massive trees as you heard that firefighter mention. some of the brush in there has not burned in more than 60 years and, of course, we've also had a drought here in the state of california for a number of years. so all of that fuel as the firefighters like to say is ripe and ready to go. that's why firefighters are on the ready, some 1500 firefighters, a bunch of strike teams here ready to combat this fire which they have described as being among the more stubborn ones burning right now in the state of california. >> not good to hear. all right, thank you very much,

9:19 am
more than 90. for more on had this developing story, cornell jacobs joins me. this new bombing today, why what are the overall ramifications? the timing here, let's get to that. >> it's the runup to the election. and of course that increases the amount of tension particularly in places like kabul and the big cities. you'll see lots more of that and as a matter of fact karzai himself said expect to see lots more violence in the runup to the election. >> so you can it tell me what voter doturnout is expected lik prior to the suicide car bombing and does that mean it will drop off? >> i think it will drop off. people are scared. and the number of people who will wind up at the polls will be greatly reduced especially if the violence continues. however, this is very much different than we've found in iraq. remember all the violence running up to the first elections there. the turnout was pigger than it was in the united states.
9:20 am
but we're not going to see this in afghanistan and i'll tell you why. most of the people in the provinces don't care very much who gets elected and who will be in kabul. all politics is local there. it's a very fragmented country. most of the al leenlegiances is tribal areas. >> the pentagon itself offering no assurances whatsoever about how long the americans will be fighting there or how many u.s. combat troops it will take to whip. so your thoughts, just how long will we be there some. >> a long time i think if we've got the stomach to do it. there are currently 60,000 troops in afghanistan, supposed to be another 8,000. the general who runs the operation says he wants another 10. in my view, you really need about 100,000. which is quite a few. you're going to need lots of money and lots of patient and i'm not necessarily convince
9:21 am
that had the american public has got it. don't forget, we've got an election come up next year, midterm election. and the president himself is going to be under fire if he hasn't made a lot of progress in afghanistan. don't forget one of his campaign promises was that he was going withdraw from iraq and fight the fight in afghanistan. if there's in the a lot of progress there, democrats will lose out. >> cornee thanks for weighing i. let's go to the new report from politico.com which says the democratic party leaders are preparing their most liberal counterparts to accept a deal on health reform. i'm joined live now by lisa, good morning to you. does a bill without the public health care auction, does that present a victory for democrats? >> well, my colleagues did point out in their piece that the president has has been talking about the public option a bit less. i think whether it ends up being a victory depends on how this plays out within the democratic
9:22 am
party. folks like former president bill clinton and illinois senator dick durbin who is a member of the leadership has said that the public option is something that democrats might have to adjust to get some sort of reform through. but howard dean and other liberals in the party have promised to boycott any legislation that does include a public option. so this blows up into an intra democrat war, that would be a real problem and hard to get a victory. >> people put out their public option, you can just give us in a nutshell what it is that's on the table, what's being proposed? people go, okay, that's public option . >> the public option is basically an alternative to private insurance companies, that would be a government run plan. and it wouldn't be the only plan, it wouldn't be necessarily socialized medicine, but it would be an alternative to the insurance plans out there that people could choose. they could go into the government plan versus their private insurance. >> so medicare with a younger
9:23 am
age approach. >> something like that. the program would be run really differently. not quite that that, but that would be the idea before some of the insurance companies and people opposed to it say that the problem that would drive the government option, private companies can't compete against that, it so it drives them out of business and would end up being the only option. democrats of course say that's not the case, it would just give people an additional choice and it would force the private companies to be more honest. >> let's get to one of the most heated moments from yesterday's town hall meeting. take a look at the president's reaction. >> we keep getting the bull. that's all we get is bull. you can't tell us how you're going to pay for this. the only way you're going to get that money is to raise our taxes. that's the only way you can do that. >> i'm happy toness at question. >> thank you. >> the -- look. you are absolutely right that i can't cover another 46 million people for free.
9:24 am
>> so did this president effectively answer that question in. >> every knows the president is a really skilled communicator and of course he answered he had two tough questions in that town hall and he answered both of them pretty well with a lot of details. and the white house has said that they want to see more questions like that, that they want to confront these sort of criticisms head on. and they don't want folks to believe that the president is getting special treatment versus their senator, their congressman. but it's actually kind of hard for them to get those questions because no one really wants to be the guy this goes on national t vcht and yells at the president. >> right. >> but they would like to see more tough questions, they think it would help them make their case. >> okay, lisa, thanks. on "meet the press" tomorrow, david gregory will talk health care reform with dick armey, tom coburn, tom daschle, and rachel maddow. it is tomorrow on "meet the press." check your local listings. have , shopping online can help save.

9:36 am
is that we still have to deal with the next phase which is the deficit, borrowing money to pay down the deficit, what that will do to interest rates, what that will do to inflation. so i think there is still anxiety related to the second wave of this economy which i don't think we've seen yet. >> this president seeming to make a bit of a shift this week in his message starting in new hampshire. talking about real people, all of their struggles trying to keep their insurance, talking of insurance reform, not health care reform. and then in montana, one of the participants pointed that out. let's take a listen. >> why is that that you've changed your strategy from talking about health care reform to health insurance reform and decided to vilify the insurance companies? >> that's a fair question. first of all, you are you absolutely right that the insurance companies in some
9:37 am
cases have been constructive. my intent is not to vilify insurance companies. if i was vilifying them, what we would be doing would be to say that private insurance has no place in the health care market and some people believe that. i don't believe that. >> is there some room to at least some degree vilify the insurance companies? shouldn't they be part of this whole process? >> i think what you said is right. it's part of the process. but it's a very complex process. and you can't take a very complex system and boil it down to one culprit. it's just not fair and it's not right. i think these town hall meetings, i thought yesterday's meeting was very good, it was very instructive. not every question will be enlightening, but this will had an couple that were. the gentleman who asked about you can really do this and not increase taxes on the middle class, the president said we can take $500 billion out of medicare. that is an amazing assumption.
9:38 am
and if we can do that, why don't we fix medicare instead of taking $500 billion out, putting medicare at risk, and then starting a new program with at least a trillion and a half dollars? we are betting the farm. it's an amazing gamble. but i thought that was a very interesting and enlightening answer and the american people are applying common sense to that. >> i'm curious why scenes -- like we only talk about health care reform when a democrat is in the white house because the republicans were in the house for eight year, they had the control of the house for four of them. you'd think it could have gotten done in that time frame. what happened? >> well, i'll tell you, that's a fair question. there are two different philosophies here. i think both parties agree that we need reform. both parties agree that we need to improve the system.
9:39 am
it's become fashionable it to trash the system, but let's not forget we've got the best hospitals, the best medical devices, the best drugs, the best doctors in the world. what i believe -- what president bush wanted to do is empower individuals. allow individuals to have a health account that is theirs that can be portable, that where they don't rely on a company to give them their health coverage, as opposed to, as well, relying on the government, which is really the way the democrats are going. so individual health accounts. make them tax deductible. empower consumers. over time, over 10, 15 year, we will have the most sophisticated medical consumer in the world. it will take time, but that is really -- that is one solution which we tried to do. it didn't go through. but i'll tell you, the only solution isn't a trillion and a
9:40 am
half dollar program. >> but i'm curious, these health care accounts, they're kind of like 401(k)s. that's the way i understand stood it. we've all soon what's happened to those. >> well, no, see, what happens now is that a company, a corporation, will give you health care and the corporation gets a tax benefit. if an individual like myself goes and tries to get my own health care account, empower myself and my family and make sure that i can take that to another company that is portable, that is with me as long as i want it to be, i can't make that tax deductible. i am not empowered as an individual. and we have seen that the way we do great things in this country is by emyou powering the american people, not by empowering the government. >> if that proposal, though, which certainly makes sense if that proposal did not go through, why didn't republicans come back to the table with
9:41 am
more, why did they make this a priority and get this done? >> well, look, alex, we tried and it didn't work. and we are where we are. and evening the important discussion right now is do we really have to go through this experiment of taking a half a billion dollars out of -- $500 billion out of medicare, putting that system at risk, when we know in ten years that's going it to start breaking the bank. starting a new system with 50 new federal bureaucracies and organizations for a trillion and a half dollar which is the congressional budget office says cannot be done cost neutral, why do we need to put all that at risk now? there is a better way. i realize that fixing medicare doesn't sound as glamorous and as grand as starting a whole new system, but we need to be pragmatic. we need to be practical. and that's why the american people are nervous because ter's

he failed to really adequately use verbal commands. he lost control. he gave a conflict in direction and instruction it is to the civilian. i think people in large part place too much of the onus about proper procedure on the civil kra ian. oftentimes people react based on the set of circumstances. >> but you usually are told stay in the car, ma'am, or sir, whatever, i'm going to go back to my car, please stay here. so if she into that the sort of directive and then got out as we see she did, to what extent might she be held responsible for at least helping stoke the flames? >> any police officer will tell you that too often our eninstructions and directions are not adhered to or listened to by civilians. we understand that's part of policing. people don't automatically respond appropriately to what you command them to do. that's just part of what happens. and that's why you have to use proper tactics and you have to be able to give verbal commands. and also you can't be -- everything is not written in stone.

the first tropical storm of the season looming in the atlantic, so where is it headed? let's get the latest from bill karins. good morning to you. >> you have to admit, we went 2 1/2 months and we didn't have any storms. not one. so we're doing well. i know a lot of people will say, look out, here it comes, but last year by this time we'd already tracked five storms. so we're well behind schedule and that's good. but now it's started.

this is ana out there in the atlantic. this is a small system. it is a weak system. but the only reason we're really concerned with it is that it has time to gather strength and it is going to head towards land. now, let's talk a little bit about the forecast and the future of this storm. this is the forecast from the national hurricane center. notice it never becomes a hurricane. that open circle means it become as tropical storm. immediately what catches your attention is this could be heading for florida or the southeast. also that cone of uncertainty does include puerto rico, virgin island, dominican republic and cuba. if they hit land, they weaken. if it stays over water, it will be stronger. so really hard to tell how strong this system will be by the time it gets to the bahamas, cuba or florida. all those squiggly little lines tell us where the storm will head. it could be as far south as down even south of cuba or as far north as heading to the yellow

line there in northern florida. all of the computers take into account the land masses. if it heads north toward the dominican republic, it will probably be a very weak system. if it goes further north, stays over the warmer water longer, we could have it deal with a strong tropical storm and maybe a hurricane heading for florida. and on top of all that, at 11:00 hurricane center guaranteed there will be tropical depression number three right behind ana and all our computers still think that this will be the one that's big and bad. and that will be bill. >> okay, bill. got it. just like you. for more weather new, you you can check out weather.com or tune into the weather chan oel cable. michael phelps may have a record number of gold medals, but he does not have a valid driver's license. at the time of his car accident thursday night in baltimore, police say phelps gave them an
