rahm emanuel quoted "the new york times" saying in order to pass health care reform, the democrats might need to go it alone. just a short time ago, robert gibbs saying the president wants to work with democrats, independents and republicans. >> our preferred option is to go the route of getting all those involved that are at the table to agree to something that can be supported by both parties. i can't speak to what republicans will ultimately end up doing. the president doesn't have control over every person's vote on this. he can and will continue to work to try to get americans want a bipartisan bill. 59% say they should no. chuck todd is nbc's chief white house correspondent. are these mixed messages today? or are they saying the same thing differently?
3:01 pm
will democrats go it alone if they have to? >> they're really saying the same thing differently. when i interviewed the president in elkhart, indiana about two weeks ago and asked about getting a health care deal by any means necessary, he said look, the goal is to get a health care deal. the goal isn't bipartisanship. so in many ways what emanuel is saying "the new york times," they're all kind of saying the same things. this is just one of those things, it's on the front page of today's "new york times." it does look like the bipartisan talks a falling apart. when grassley starts saying publicly, i can't support a plan that i may support in a deal, i'm not going to vote for it if i can't get other republicans on board, this, i think is the opening. i've had plenty of people tell me they're going to have reconciliation, the idea of putting us through with democrats only.
3:02 pm
they want to hold that over the heads of this deal in order to encourage republicans to stay at the table. >> and what about any reaction yet to the numbers today? 59% of people polled in this quinnipiac poll saying they shouldn't do this alone. they want to see something bipartisan done. >> that's always an answer you're going to get from the public. the public always claims they want a shird party, too, if you ask them. wouldn't it be nice to have a third party to compete. you would get a big number for that, but this is one of those where the result is always going to look stronger and the idea of bipartisanship than reality. i guess i wouldn't take that poll question -- i wouldn't say that that poll question is the be all, end all issue. >> got you. thank you so much. good to see you.
3:03 pm
and now, "the bigger picture." there's a whole new level of misinformation that seems to be stoking republican protesters showing up at town halls across the country. case in point, last night at a senior citizen's center. barney frank was confronted by a 28-year-old woman identified as rachel brown. miss brown was convinced obama's proposa proposals were like nazism. >> why do you can't to support a nazi policy as obama has, why are you supporting it? >> when you ask me that question, i am going to revert to my ethnic heritage and answer your question with a question, on what planet do you spend most of your time? trying to have a conversation with you would be like trying to argue with the dining room table. i have no interest in doing it. >> a claim also surfaced at a

mistakingly think illegal immigrants will now get health insurance. 54% believe health care will be a government takeover. 50% believe it will help take care of abortions. that's false. bob franken is a writer for "politics daily." is it fair to make that connection? >> i think there's a question we have to clear up first and that is how many times has barney frank talked to his dining room table? it's really important. and how many times are we going to play that? >> i was thinking a lot of people were going to come back with that because it's ricochetted around the world. the democrats finally have somebody who's punching back. >> you remember when everybody was, i'm not a potted plant. now, i'm not a dining room table. to some, misinformation is the only information. there are people who don't want to take the time or don't have

the intellect to go through all the complexities of health care and they're easily persuaded by emotion. this is not a left wing or right wing thing, although now it seems to be on the right wing and i suspect the people at freedom works are not going to send their people to any more barney frank meetings. to liken all of this to the nazis or to say to an israeli man, hile hitler, is dispickable. there are some pros and cons about what is be proposed. >> there's a clear breakdown from terms of where people get their information. fox viewers believe myths more than cnn viewers. the idea that it will lead to a government takeover, 79%. the last one, decisions about
3:07 pm
elderly care, the idea that the government could somehow kill elderly people, three out of every four fox viewers believe that. there's nothing, anything like that, in any of these bills. >> our business has a lot of preachers who have their own choirs. they're going to believe whatever they're told by people who believe they can make the big bucks by whipping up a frenzy. the misinformation that's put out there by various websites and the like and add to that, the anger people are feeling because they feel the economy has left them out of control of their lives. what's really scary is that some people are coming to these meetings and are outside now with weapons. it's really an ugly mix that's going on right now. >> bob franken, you write for "politics daily," thank you.

today marks the deadliest day in baghdad since u.s. troops started pulling out of iraq nearly two months ago. a series of blasts around the capital killed at least 95 and wounded more than 400. the most violent attack happened when a truck bomb tore through iraq's foreign ministry. on eve of election day in afghanistan, meanwhile, the taliban has ramped up attacks. >> six u.s. troops and at least six election workers were killed. three militants took over a bank in kabul. police stormed the building, killing all three and the taliban has threatened to attack polling stations tomorrow. the foreign ministry told afghan journalists not to broadcast any information about attacks tomorrow, but the journalists rejected that deband.
