right now tracking hurricane bill. we are live from bermuda to cape cod to long island with the pictures. >> no, no. there's no food, and it's getting really unhappy. >> that's the pilot of an airline that was stranded all night long and had dozens of passengers on board. for the first time publicly we're hearing the desperate appeal made by that pilot. separating fact from fiction in the health care plan. what is the real truth about keeping your private insurance? also, the new reality for jon of jon and kate plus eight. does he have a new tv show in the works? oh, we can only hope.
10:01 am
good morning, everyone. i'm alex width, and welcome to msnbc saturday. a tropical storm warning remains in effect for massachusetts, as hurricane bill barrels towards bermuda. bill is a category two hurricane this morning with winds near 105 miles an hour. forecasters say the storm could regain intensity over the weekend. bermuda residents woke up to some power outages and minor flooding. bill and hillary clinton were vacationing on the island, but they cut their trip short, and they left on thursday. people on the east coast from northern florida to new england are bracing for high surf and rip currents. we have a live report later in the hour from massachusetts. in studio meteorologist todd santos is tracking bill for us. good morning to you. >> hey there, alex wrshgs you know, for the moes part this is the perfect way to watch a hurricane, from a distance. it's certainly safe as long as we're inland from the coastline. if you want to go check it out at the beach, just don't go in the water. that's pretty much the situation. we are going to be dealing with rip current risks as well as
10:02 am
pretty substantial wave action across the coastline. these are the first visible satellite images of the day. you need the sun to be up in the sky to get a good clear picture of it. you can still see the eye and see some of the outer bands. we may see outer bands of rainshowers just raising cape cod as it makes its way by, and also some of the wind associated with some of the thunderstorms in those bands, and that's the tropical storm warning. especially because the wind could be upwards of 45 to 55 miles an hour late tonight and early tomorrow. we're talking about areas through coastal massachusetts, cape cod down through nantucket, martha's vineyard. some of the spots in blue there, high surf advisories where waves could be up ten feet, if not 15 feet. these are some of the buoys in the ocean. one along the southern edge of the screen there, it's up 16 feet. last night when that was -- the storm was to the south of that, we had reports come in around midnight of 27 foot significant wave heights there. pretty significant as far as
10:03 am
that's concerned, and the system itself, a good distance to watch it from, a couple hundred miles off the coast lien, major effects will be the wave action and the significant rip currents. there it is through sunday and sunday evening as it weakens towards nova scotia. it is expected to at least graze the edge of nova scotia. that will be the one to watch. the u.s. coastline, looking good from this point. the showers on the east coast really not associated with this system. it's actually a frontal boundary stalled along the coast, and, again, it's been significantly humid out there, alex, and that will continue. >> okay. well, thank you very much for giving us all that technical approach on how we look at bill. let's go to the weather channel meteorologist side mike seidel live for us on jones beach. let's get a look at how things are. what's the situation like there? >> reporter: we can show you firsthand what's going on. the beach is under water. this is jones beach, and because of the astronomical high tide, the approach of bill off the coast, this whole section of beach is under water. in fact, we've actually seen white caps coming up here.
10:04 am
there's the edge of the water where that lovely disgusting sea foam, and we've got a lot of folks that have come out to jones beach to work on their tans, and to come out here and take some pictures of some waves. stand out here, and can you see the surf out here. these are eight footers, and they'll go up to ten to is it feet later this afternoon and tonight. now, keep in mind you can come out to the beach, but the lifeguards do not want you in the water. they've closed the beaches to swimming. the new york city beaches, including coney island, manhattan, rockaway they're closed until further notice. probably at least until midday tomorrow. it's going to be until midday tomorrow before these waves start to back off. the rain that we had earlier over three-fourths inches by summersville and new jersey. that's from the front. the front and the upper level jet stream, alex, are helping to steer bill and keep it away from the east coast. now that it's moving north, it's paralleling the coast. it's going to turn northeast tomorrow, and the folks that are probably going to take the brunt of the storm up there in halifax and sydney, novembera scotia, and by monday morning it will be
10:05 am
nontropical or extra-tropical as it races over st. john's newfoundland. it's a beautiful beach day here. you can come out, but the real danger lies as you go out in the water. they'll let you get your toes wet, but that is it here along long island. >> don't want to be doing stories tomorrow about people being taken away in the riptides. thank you very much, mike seidel. next let's go to elbow beach, bermuda. it's coming up in just a few minutes. from there to politics. msnbc has learned that a cia report -- it was first commissioned in 2004. the report says cia officials threatened one detainee with a gun and a power drill and they staged a fake egs kugs in a room next to one detainee complete with a gunshot to make it seem like a prisoner just had been killed. michael isikopf says the report will be pretty explosive.
10:06 am
>> there are reports that talk about these techniques. mock executions, threatening a detainee with death that clearly seem to go beyond the justice department legal authorizations, and that's why these are so significant. >> the rachel maddow show airs week nights at 9:on 0 on msnbc. let's talk about health care. lawmakers on both sides of it say the other side is filling people's heads with myths and mistruths. >> the plan being promoted by the white house would give washington the power to make highly personal medical decisions on behalf of patients, on behalf of you. >> i no sooner want government to get between you and your doctor than i want insurance companies to make arbitrary decisions about what medical care is best for you. if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. if you like your private health insurance plan, you can keep
10:07 am
your plan. >> experts agree that under the house bill, millions of americans will be forced off of their personal private coverage and shuffled on to the government plan. >> i'm joined from washington by ann cornbly, reporter for "the washington post." another good morning to you. those two -- >> good morning. >> those other two segments -- the president making his case and then the republicans coming back with this physician-lawmaker. if you look at these two arguments under the proposed health reform, can you keep your plan or can you not keep your plan? >> well, look, at the point that we are right now, we are far too early to know what the bill is going to look like. excuse me here. it's the ear piece. there are four different versions right now that have been passed down to committee. three in the house, one in the senate, and another one in the senate that's still being worked out. i think what both sides are doing is trying to claim the high road in this debate and
10:08 am
there is not unbill for everyone to look at and read, but i think from a message perspective what we see the white house doing is struggling to reclaim it, knock back some of what they would describe as mischaracterizations. they had to do that all month. it started with more outlandish accusations as death panels and so on, but now they're getting to the substance of how this would work for actual patients in the health care situation. >> yeah. among those situations, people talking about all over the place how involved washington would be, and people's individual medical decisions, but with regard to the white house and how this looks at it all right now, how nervous is the white house, or should the white house be at this point in the game? >> i think there's a range of opinion at this point. look, they've had bad augusts before. in august of 2007 they were losing the primary. in august of 2008 they were losing the general election, or at least suffering a challenge from john mccain. in their view this is just yet another august where naysayer are -- or bed wetters, as one of
10:09 am
them memorandumably put it are doubting their ability to reclaim the message. they're confident that they'll come back after labor day and be able to jump-start this, get the negotiations going again in the senate or if necessary, abandon the negotiations and go it alone. they're feeling pretty confident, but i think they are surprised at the level of partisan ranker and how difficult it has been for the president to do what he promised, that is rise above politics, bru people together, end partisanship, all those promises we remember from the campaign. >> you talk about part sdmranship. what about the so-called nuclear option. i mean, using the budget to pass health reform. how does this work, and do you think the democrats would really go there? >> look, i'm no parliamentarian. they can divide the bill in order to have at least a portion of it that needs to pass with only 51 votes, not the entire thing. they have haven't said whether they'll do this. there are a lot of things they haven't said if they're going to do. the deadline is september 15th. that's when we'll know if the senate has been able to come up
10:10 am
with -- the finance committee has been able to come up with a bipartisan deal. looks dicey right now, but we have at least a few more weeks before we'll know if that's the route they're going to have to go. >> ann, thanks so much for joining us. >> thank you. >> thank you so much. key players in the health care debate from both sides of the aisle. senate finance committee members orrin hatch and charles schumer will tell david gregory where health care reform stands right now. if it is sunday, it's "meet the press." check your local listings. libyan leader muammar kaddafi is grateful to -- he was release from scotland on compassionate grounds because he has terminal cancer. u.s. and british officials have condemned the apparent heroes welcome that he has received in libya. he says he will soon present evidence that proves he is innocent. inmates in a kentucky prison set fire to several buildings. a police spokesman says the rioters left so much damage behind that some 1,it00

10:13 am
he is, of course, accused of strangling jasmine to death. the 28-year-old swimsuit model who he married back in march. we have new video of what police call a very gruesome crime scene. her body was stuffed in a suitcase, dumped in a trash bin just outside of los angeles, california. detectives say her fingers and teeth were missing, presumably an effort to delay the identification of her body. in fact, her body was so mutilated jasmine was identified through the serial numbers on her breast implants. she was last seen alive with ryan jenkins in san diego. he reported her missing the very day she was found. the two were married back in march and were said to have a troubling relationship. in fact, fiore accused jenkins of domestic violence, a case still pending in california. police believe ryan jenkins has somehow made his way up towards the washington, u.s., canada border, and they believe he may be entering this area of canada where he grew up.

msnbc is the place for politics. the latest bowl shows americans aren't convinced the american's health care plan will help them. 45% of americans say they support the president, saying congress's plan for the health care system. 50% are opposed to it, and when it comes to the president himself, just 46% approve of how the president is handle this overhaul. that is down from 57% in april. auto% disapprove. that is up. i'm joined live to talk about it from washington by msnbc political analyst pat buchanan and democratic strategist maurice reid, and a good morning to the two of you. nice to see you both. >> good morning, alex wrshgs. >> good morning. >> pat, if you are advising the president, you know that he wants health reform passed. where does he go from here?
10:24 am
>> i think when he comes back from splashing in the water at martha's convenientyard. he calls his leaders in in the house and the senate and says tell me exactly what you think you can get because i don't think you can get this, that, and the other thing, and i think he has to sort of knock the heads together to the degree he can and convince them to come up with a plan that has most of the features he wants. they're not going to get them all. you get through both houses and then in effect say this is my plan, and let's go all out and let's go together and stop tearing each other apart because we're killing ourselves. it's killing me. it's killing the party. we got to get something done. we can call substantive health care that i want to sign by the end of this year. >> okay, pat. you talk about a bipartisan sentiment there. what about you, maurice? if you are the president, any chance you say pass health rye form by any means possible, even if it's a partisan plan? >> i don't think he is at that point just yet. i think he needs to really rally the troops and need to get
10:25 am
refocused on a message. the democratic party has to understand that president barack obama is their best asset, so they really need to rally around him and come up with a solution to this quagmire. there's no reason why the democrats who are in charge of the senate and the house and the white house can't get together and figure out a way to get this done and bring some of the republicans on. i think that's where senator matt baucus is going to have to play a real role here because he is not such a partisan guy, and he are really reach across the aisle. the democratic party needs to wake up and understand that barack obama, president barack obama is their best asset so, they need to build this man up, make sure they can get something done this time around. >> you know, maurice, what you are saying is not rocket science. i mean, it's not a reflection on you. the fact is this has been a situation for a while now. we've been seeing the president's numbers go down. why haven't the democrats heed that kind of advice? >> well, we don't have people like pat buchanan on the other side of the aisle to work with. if he was in the senate or the house, we would really get it done. the problem is that the
10:26 am
president really wants to rise above the partisan rankor. the problem is the republicans don't. they don't care that barack obama wants to be a new post partisan leader. they only care about getting elected and winning more seats in the house and senate, whereas the president really wants to get something done. it's just you have two people that are not on the same side or not seeing it from the same sheet of music. >> hmm. pat, look, the current administration has been so busy. they've been passing bank bail-outs and dealing with stimulus measures, auto industry bail-outs, tobacco legislation, climate legislation, and, yeah, about what the two wars in iraq and afghanistan? should it come as a surprise to the president that he is getting pushback on his health reform plan? is he doing too much too soon? is there any part that he had a choice, he didn't have to deal with this right now? >> well, i think if he wants health care and he wants the kind of overarching health care bill, he has to get it done in
10:27 am
his first year. you can't do that in the second year with the midterm elections on you. let me disagree to this extent. i think early on republicans really said we deserve to lose this election, and it's a good thing we got the first african-american, and, okay, if he gets us something, we're going to work with him. i think with the stimulus package, he didn't get a single republican vote on that because i think they felt they were completely cut out of the deal, and now the president is beginning to lose that ora of a post-racial transformative person that goes across party lines, and republicans are seeing nothing. they can't abide to this bill. they're going to the wall to stop it. there's no doubt about that. they didn't get one or two votes in the senate. however, the problem here, alec, is the democratic party has 60 senate seats and 27 on house seats. why can't they pass their own bill. the democratic party is at war with itself. that is why it's hurting i itself. the liberals are saying the blue
10:28 am
dogs are worthless. we want this public option. they got to give it to us. the blue dogs are saying i can't go home and survive that. to the democrats, it's their congress, their president, this is their problem primarily. >> i want to take issue with one thing, though, because the fact is that the president -- what about all those times we're watching him go into and come out of meetings. they've had bipartisan meetings. he had a bunch of republicans over to the white house, different types of situations, whether it was for dinner or skugs, just simple meetings in the afternoon or morning. this is -- >> here's the scenario. here's the scenario on that. you know, these guys are into photo op politics where they will go in and have a cocktail with the president, but that doesn't mean they really want this president or the country to move forward. pat, i would agree with you that there are issues within the democratic party. surprise, surprise. it wouldn't be the democratic party if we didn't have differences, but the fact of the matter is that barack obama is the president of the united states. health care is a real issue. we need to find a way to get
10:29 am
past politics and really rally around this issue. i believe the president has tried to do that, but ultimately, if he cannot get it done with the republicans, he does have the votes in the house and in the senate and he will get it done this year. >> well, let me say this. one of the republican issues that has been ignored completely is tort reform. we've got trial lawyers suing doctors and getting the billions of dollars and things like that. this causes the malpractice insurance to surge through the roof. the doctors can only get it back by charging more money. where is that component in the democratic bill, which republicans really support? look, the republicans started off -- i do agree with you, alex, when barack obama gave his state of the union, he came down the podium from the left, and he shook hands with all the republicans. i have never seen a president do that on the other side. it was a gracious gesture. i think pelosi and the others got control of that stimulus bill and said, look, we want, we don't need these guys. we want our spending bill, and they got it, and they didn't get
10:30 am
a single republican vote. >> okay. guys -- >> we all know this is a city of compromise. you can't get everything, pat. you know this as well as i. we have to get some sort of tort reform, but we won't get everything. we need a public option. we won't get everything, but we need to get a bill done. this country can't afrd to have the same health care situation we currently have. >> okay. listen, guys, i need to go. otherwise, nick is going to come out here and it won't be pretty. we'll see you both next hour. thank you very much. pat buchanan and maurice reid. well, a toddler in washington state made one heck of a first catch. the boy was fishing in a lake with his family when he caught a cousin of the piranha. that fish is normally found in south america. authorities believe that its owner released it after it outgrew an aquarium.

hurricane bill storms northward toward the canadian provinces. residents from new england to florida are all being warned not to go in the water because of dangerous waves and rip currents. weather channel jeff morrow is live in orleans, massachusetts. with another good morning to you. last year it was upsetting to see the surfers out of the water. any of them gotten out yet? >> reporter: most of them are out now. we've talked to some of the lifeguards. in fact, you can see a few of the lifeguards behind me. you can also see a red sign there behind me which is basically warning people to stay out of the water. officially the beach is closed. not the actual beach, but they don't want people going in the water. they can't actually prevent them if they really want to go in the water, but they're strongly discouraging surfers included to stay out, and i would say right now looking out here i don't see very many in the way of any surfers out in the water, so maybe some of them are starting to heed that warning.

is dropping along with confidence in his handling of the health care issue. a new report from election analyst charlie cook says democrats now stand to face some serious losses in the midterm elections next year. i'm joined now live from washington by charlie cook, msnbc political analyst and editor of "the cook political report." good morning, charlie. it's always good to see you. >> good morning, alex. >> i look at what you are saying. you say that congressional democrats stand to lose six to is it seats in the next election or more. what has gone wrong? is it the democrats' agenda or the way they're delivering their message or something? what is it? >> well, when we look at the district by district around the country, we come up with, you know, somewhere between six and 12. when you sort of factor in the macro, you know, political environment, that's where the over and unders are about 20. we're getting the sense of deja vu. that when you see the wind starting to turn against the party, and it's almost like
10:37 am
there's an invisible hand pushing the candidates of one party forward and the other back, and we're starting to see that right now brsh as you say, a lot of -- a lot of -- it's not all health care, but a lot of it is, and the thing is i think we got to the point where we know that perception is more important than reality in politics, and the thing about it is i think the health care proposals, plural, they've become so disfigured and charicatured. some are legitimate. some are false. it's gotten to the point where the content of these proposals don't matter. it's so discredited that, you know, i just think it's an unwinnable fight. for these democrats that are sitting -- there are basically 50 democrats -- or 48 sitting in districts that tilt somewhat republican and another 50 that are right close to the edge.
10:38 am
what about day yeah view, mcplans? it wouldn't have been the bush administration. we had that national discourse on health care reform during his eight years in office. you are looking back to the clinton years? >> well, yes. the thing is when you see -- i mean, does it matter what the subject is? when you see people starting to turn off and to turn away and attitudes lock in approximate about a president and the thing is midterm elections are -- and right now you've got -- you know, if you think of the country in terms of red, blue, and purple, red republican leaning, i would say right now that president obama is detested far more, hated far more than bill clinton ever was. in purple america he is

basically -- his approval ratings are 50-auto or 45-45 nunk independents, but that's a sharp move away from him, and his numbers are being held up by he is still popular among democrats, but there are whole states. i had a former democratic state chairman in one southern state say that the president was just persona nongrada. they didn't want him coming by or near the state. i had a chief of staff for a long-time democrat say this political climate today is as bad for democrats as that person had ever seen and that included 1994. >> how did it turn so quickly? >> the thing is -- i think a lot of mistakes were made, and they weren't stupid mistakes, but they were mistakes. i think one thing that was underestimated is the emotional trauma from the economy and the financial markets collapsing last year and people learning, you -- losing 40% of their life savings or their jobs. i think what happened is i think our appetite for change reduced
10:40 am
significantly. people were more fearful. they're more anxious. then we came in and turned the corner, and i think in retrospect -- i didn't think this at the time. the president probably should have said at the beginning of the year, i know we said we were going to do health care. i know we said we were going to do climate change, but we've got to devote the first year in office to turning the economy around because people don't have the stomach for big change. i think in retrospect that's probably what they should have done because it's very clear they don't. it's very clear that if the president gets one quarter of what he originally wanted to get, that would be a victory. just a quarter. frankly, you know, i think it's going -- i think he will have a hard time getting any kind of democratic support from anybody in swing districts for any of this. health care or climate change. >> sobering from charlie cook. charlie, thank you very much. appreciate it, as always. see you.

washington d.c. is michelle pegona, national krbt for "american's most wanted." good morning. >> good morning. this is a very interesting case, and as you mentioned, alex, the ground search is off, but the investigation is still on. >> okay. i'm sorry. i thought we were rolling some tape there. if the ground search is still on and the investigation is on, the ground search is off, where do you go with a woman who disappears while talking on the phone and they believe was squired away in a car? >> at this point what investigators have done is they set up roadblocks during those eight days of searching on the ground, and they really combed a three-mile radius from the point where they went missing on the rural roadway all the way out and that's where a lot of the ground searching took place. they also followed up with leads in all of the other states, and that particular portion of the investigation is what will continue. tonight when we air this case on "america's most wanted" for instance, and we receive a lead in dallas, texas -- i'm just
10:43 am
throwing that out there -- we will send a marshal task force down there to check out a lead to either rule it in or out. those parts of the investigation are still very active. it's just a lot of the searching, the ground searching, the waterways, by the air, a lot of those resources is what's being scaled back at this point. >> what about the circumstances surrounding how she disappeared? are we sure they know what happened to her, at least at the beginning? >> at this particular point the circumstances are definitely -- from what investigators believe -- to be very serious. they believe that she was, in fact, abducted. they do not believe -- they have no indication to believe that her boyfriend had anything to do with this particular crime at all. his phone did, in fact, come back to the atlanta area where he was calling her from at that time, and based on his report, to investigators, and we won't go a lot into the details because those are some of the
10:44 am
golden nuggets that investigators want to keep back, but basically he does feel that she was in grave danger because of what she said to the person that did take her away. based on the fear within her voice. see, the neat thing about christy and the one thing that i think that if she does have an opportunity to escape that will help her tremendously is the fact that she has been through police training. she's a former probation officer. she has firearms training and has done drug counseling in the past. this is a very strong woman, and at this point we really need to find her and bring her back. she does have a 15-year-old son that she leaves at home and also her family is just doing the tremendous job at keeping the word out there along with christy cornwell.com. you know, they're releasing videos. they're releasing pictures. they're making themselves available to the media. it's a lot of the things that we suggest doing, and we have a lot of this information. you can do if you have a missing loved one on amw.com. >> thank you for the advice.

10:49 am
that's a good thing. that's been a problem for consumers. also, changes in the billing process, as you see up there. banks have to give you more notice before the due date before that bill is due. in the past they've given you a couple of weeks. that's now going up to 21 days. people have been struggling. they get the bills late, and then they get a late fee. this solves two problems that consumers are currently having. >> there's more rules. >> there are more rules. >> when? >> those are not going into effect until february of 2010. as can you imagine, between now and february, the issuers will continue -- will continue their nasty practices. they'll continue to try to raise rates on unsuspecting consumers, and a lot of these guys have good credit. they are going to consider -- continue slashing the limit, and in many cases they slash it right to the bone, and people find out the hard way. >> you bring up unsuspecting consumers. what about those guys that were accused of $130 million of credit card -- stolen credit cards. >> this is a huge scheme. a massive scheme. pray god they get charged in the scheme. it's going to happen.

clause or he is trying to get fired because he wants out of the show. it's not uncommon for programming, even traditional programming, to have this clause. just in case their stars get a little bit out of control, and, of course, he has been out at bars and he has been carousing with women and we have a big story this issue about a fling that he had we a former reporter, and he apparently had this fling while he was involved with his current girlfriend haley. >> oh, wow. yeah. >> so cheating on haley with whom he was cheating on kate. >> there are pretty damning allegations in here as well, including the fact that jon allegedly asked kate to come over to his house late at night while the kids were sleeping and in the house and sneak her out before they woke up, and, of course, that he encouraged her to quit her job, make plans for the future and then dumped her by text. >> yeah. this is good. he is a dirt bag. >> according to kate major. >> according to alex width. i'm sorry. i hate to editorialize like
