comings and goings at the movies. good morning, everyone. i'm alex witt. here's what's happening right now for you here on msnbc saturday. bill is a category two hurricane this morning. the winds dying down just a little bit. now about 100 miles an hour. forecasters say the storm could regain intensity over this weekend. bermuda residents woke up this morning to palm tree debris scattered across the roads. some power outages and minor flooding there on the island. police along the east coast from -- people on the east coast from northern florida to new england are bracing for high surf and rip currents. we've got a live report later in the hour from orleans, mass marks coming your way, but right now here in studio nbc meteorologist todd santos keeps tracking bill for us. good morning again to you. slowing down just a little bit. >> good morning. we've seen the winds kind of tick off a little bit as of the 11:00 a.m. update. the forward speed has increased from it 4 miles an hour to 23.
11:01 am
we'll see a significant acceleration, and that's good news, especially for residents of cape cod where right now you can kind of see a few of the showers along the coastline just the outer edge of the system itself. you see that one little streak just coming to the range of the radar. time to give you an idea that we may see a system graze the edge of martha's dine vs yard with rainshowers and wind. toe personally upwards of -- starting late tonight, early tomorrow morning, and that's why we're talking about the tropical storm warnings in effect for mainly cape cod. the winds when they do start to build, will be mainly northeasterly to start, and then northerly eventually basically shifting more with the more westerly component, considering, again, you just picture thad counterclockwise rotation as the system passes by the coastline. the acceleration and speed, especially for late tonight through even early tomorrow morning and then again even the residents of down east maine could potentially be put under a tropical storm is the word i'm looking for warning. that's something to watch out for. again with some of the heavier

rain bonds. really the bulk of the system off the coastline, a major wave producer. that's one of the issues. you see the high surf advisory especially through much of long island. you do extend kind of spore addically all the way down the coastline towards jacksonville, florida. something to keep in mind. by tomorrow we'll start to see the winds dying down there and picking up. especially along cape cod and upwards of 15 feet. >> thank you for all those details. appreciate that, todd santos. moving now outside weather channel meteorologist jeff morrow. he is live on norfolk beach in orleans, massachusetts, with the perspective from the beach there. good morning again to you, jeff. what's the latest? >> reporter: all right, alex. well, i promise not to call it hurricane alex this time. >> that's okay. >> reporter: we are getting some of the higher surf. we had to move our location up here because the tide is coming in. did will be high tide within the next couple of hours. we're expecting that some of the over wash will come up as it did last night to the base of the dunes here. a lot of these people probably will have to move here before too long. there are a lot of people here. of course, we're still in summer vacation season, and a lot of
11:03 am
folks are here, and they're down here basically to see how big the waves are and a lot of disappointed surfers that they can't get out in the water. they're turning people away here. if you have a surf board and trying to come into the parking lot, they're turning you around basically, and the surfers that were out this morning, a lot of them have now come out of the water. with good reason. we're expecting these waves, as todd sabt yoes was just saying, maybe upwards of eight to 12 feet as we head through later today, and maybe higher than that as we head through the overnight. that may cause some overwash and some dune erosion up around this area, so probably is best not only to stay out of the water, but maybe late this afternoon and early tomorrow morning to be off the beach altogether. alex. >> okay. just so you know, hurricane alex happens to be one of my nicknames. just think about it, and you'll probably get it. >> one for continuing coverage of hurricane bill. the storm looms along the east coast. meantime, new this morning president obama is once again

tackling what he calls the outrageous myths about health reform. republicans say the president is the one playing fast and loose with the facts. i'm joined now live from washington d.c. by nbc's mike vickera. good saturday morning to you, mike. >> let's get to the latest here. you have a lawmaker who is also a physician, and he is the one that's making these claims that the president is playing fast and loose with the facts. what's the story here? >> well, he is not the only one, alex. all along republicans have fought back against the president. the president has said time and time again, as have many democrats and prop ownents of this health care reform legislation, that these accusations that they're going to be so-called death panels, that they're going to be mandatory funded abortions in this plan, that it would cover illegal immigrants. these are petition not hely false, as far as the bills that are in congress, and particularly one bill that's on the house side. republicans have countered and said, look, the president is making claims too that aren't necessarily going to be true an

he said something startling. that some of the democrats he has talked to over the last three weeks are fearing that this is shaping up as a political disaster for them. on the order of 1994, and we know what happened at the outset of the clinton administration when they tried to institute a health care reform program, and republicans won 52 seats in the elections in 199had. at this moment, you know, they say the president is taking a long view. he looks at the distance. one of his advisors is saying. at this moment things are not looking at the encouraging for this health care reform effort in congress. >> yeah. you know what, mike, i want to ask you about that great back and forth that was put together. we talked about the president, and you have representative price. where is the truth? that's what most people want to know. how is this going to affect me is what everybody is asking right now. even cost notwithstanding. what's going to happen with the quality of my health care? will the government get involved? will it not? where does this lie? >> when polls are showing that

most people will have a health insurance program we're pretty much satisfied with their health insurance program. sometimes it's kind of painless. i, for example, and many others, millions of others have health insurance premiums deducted from their paycheck. you might not be aware of how much you are paying. this is what the administration is trying to fight saying, look, we're going to reduce costs for you. in particular, what republicans have been critical of and the president makes his claim over and over again is that he will not have to lose your doctor or lose your plan, but republicans point out that there may be the -- there probably will be some people who have a plan through their employer and some of these employers may say, look, i'm not going to offer that plan anymore. under the house plan, they would have to payle% of their payroll seats if they chose not to offer a health insurance plan any more. then their employees would have to exchange what their creating and choose another plan. that's what republicans are referring to, and they say the president isn't being complet y

>> well, number one, he is a canadian citizen, and we know that canada won't extradite anybody back to the united states if they face capital punishment. california authorities real quickly have said, hey, no capital punishment. we're not going to charge him with that. the challenge now, alex, is with this guy, like any other animal on the run, they have a tendency to go to an area that they know. as a profiler, we know most people on the run are going to go to a community to an area where they can fit in, where they know their way around, they know which streets -- which way the streets go, so that's what this guy did, but, alex, should he be the one that killed jasmine, he is not a professional killer. you know, by cutting her fingers off and taking her teeth out, he has seen too many episodes of csi, but he doesn't know how to run. what do we do as investigators? we shut his bank accounts off. we follow his credit cards. we watch his parents' home. this guy is going to have two choices, alex. surrender or die.

seaboard as hurricane bill moves west in the atlantic. waves reached 20 feet off north carolina and 18 feet from long island to southeastern massachusetts. heads up, everybody. pay attention to lifeguards and their posted warnings about riptides. let's go to politics now and health care reform. fiction versus fact. lawmakers on both sides of the debate say the other side is filling people's heads with myths and mistruths. this is the president and leading democrats who say pushing through a partisan plan. i'm joined now live from washington by political journalist jennifer. good morning to you, jennifer. >> good morning, alex. how are you? >> i hope you are too. i'm great. we talk about this very convoluntarily outed issue. the gop says that you're going to be forced to give up your private health care in certain situations. the president said that is a myth. you will be able to keep your private health insurance if you wish. >> where is the truth here?
11:17 am
this is a situation without much enlightenment being provided by the sper have aers of this bill for what it means for americans. i think the white house is clearly on defense. democrats are on defense. the proposal is absolutely in jeopardy at this point. of course, you know, the president is on vacation this week, so it's a tb continued come september. >> do you think there's any wisdom in the president being gone this week? not wisdom. the guy needs to take a break. we understand with his family. in terms of just racheting down all the rhetoric flying back and forth. there are those that say get him out of the spotlight. >> well, i think, you know, i would imagine he is doing some work behind the scenes while he is on vacation to broker a compromise between the two wings of his own party, liberal democrats who insist on the public option and the blue dogs who are concerned about the high cost of the bill and don't want to see a government plan.
11:18 am
i imagine this isn't going to be all fun and games on martha's vineyard no, matter what the pictures indicate. i think the negotiations within his own party must continue, and obviously, we saw democratic leaders say they might not do this in a bipartisan fashion come the fall, and there might be an effort to move this through reconciliation where they need a simple majority. >> the president previously stated and it is one fefshent belief that he wants to do this on a bipartisan level because everybody across the nation. if he continues to hold on to that stance, does the president risk losing support from his own base? >> i think he does. i think you had charlie cook on earlier who said that, you know, that democrats are really concerned about what this issue means for them politically in the midterms, and don't forget, when clinton health care imploded in 1994, democrats lost congress for the first time, and i think it was four decades.
11:19 am
it took them a dozen years to get it back. there's a lot riding in the balance on this issue for the white house, and it's a really big ask following an enormous stimulus package and an energy bill and the like. i think it's definitely safe to say things are in peril right now. >> what about the notion that the president is taking on too much too soon? if you look at everything he has on his plate right now, what do we have, with the bank bailout, stimulus measures, auto industry bailout, tobacco, environmental, two wars overseas. am i leaving out anything else here? if you look at that and add to it the health care reform, did the president have an option, though, on any of these issues to say i'm not going to deal with that one right now? >> i think that the economy was obviously the pressing issue when he took office and remains a pressing issue. >> i think they wanted to use the political capital he had early in his term to try to move on health care. it was a priority for him on the campaign trail. it's a priority for democratic leader and remains so, and
11:20 am
presidents are often never as popular or as influential as they are early in their term. i think he didn't have a choice to move on this, but as you mentioned in that long list, it's a lot for the public to digest and a lot for lawmakers to explain to their constituents at once. >> let's go to madrid where the animals are getting their licks. good weekend for these legalures. they're being given frozen treats and ice cream to cool them off. the lemurs especially like those blocks of ice that contain fruits and vegetables. well, that's good. it's healthy. watching msnbc saturday, and we're watching them. if you think all batteries are the same, consider this:

11:37 am
dramatic town hall meetings, some of them very raucus, and secondly, a lot of the negatives of the bill have been graut out by its opponents, republicans, and blue dog democrats, and they've benhamering it, and we've lost sight of sort of the overall idea of health care for 47 million uninsured. i'll tell you, alex, i looked at the drudge headline this morning, and the deficits for the next ten years are no longer $7 trillion. they've upgraded it to $9 trillion, and the idea that we're passing an entitlement program with a running deficit of and% ar 14% of gdp, it seems like these things will weigh heavily on it, and if they don't get it soon after they get back, they're not going to get it at all. >> hmm. so on the heels of that mahorri how worried about the white house be? >> you have to be nervous. any time you are taking on a big situation, you never want to count your chickens before they hatch. one of the things that's troubling for me is here's a

president whose mother was on her death bed, had to fight with insurance companies. we've lost sight of the fact that here's a guy who doesn't want any american family to have to go through what he had to go through and his mother had to go through. i think they have to take a step back. it is a bit nerve racking with all the shouting and the thee at ricks going on in these town hall meetings, but they have to get focused on ultimately the american people need reform of the health care system. >> they have to get it done this year, or it won't happen. >> are insurance companies holding -- those are reforms there. i do think you can get a lot of republicans for it. you can get a lot of democrats. almost all the democrats for. you come in, and you got bonnie

frank saying that, yep, that government -- or the government option, that is the trojan horse, and eventually we go into single payer and we get rid of all these private companies and things. that's what is driving people away, and they'll have the democrats -- they'll have to give up something. they got 60 votes. they got it70 house seats. they can get an awful lot, but they just can't get everything. >> can i ask you real quick. >> what's troubling, though, pat -- what's troubling for me -- go ahead. >> i'm curious about what you think about what charlie cook was telling me. whether or not you caught the interview, he basically said, look, he thinks in terms of the midterms next year, 2010, that the democrats could lose six to 20 seats, even more depending where the economy takes us, but why is that? is there something being lost in the translation here? is there -- is it the philosophy of what's being said, or is it just the communication of what's being said that's not working out? what do you both think here?
11:40 am
>> it was shocking for me, pat. i mean, we were talking about this in the greenroom. this is an issue where it really goes to the heart of people's fears. people want health care. when you have health care, you certainly don't want it taken away. it's troubling that it's being so skewed that people are not really understanding the fundamental truths of what's going on here, and it's really partly the republicans fault, but it's partly the democrats fault as well for not getting their message out. it's troubling, and if you are a democrat right now and you are in a john mccain district, you are worried. >> yeah. let me tell you, alex. i was in my first campaign with richard nixon 196 a, 196 6, and republicans were out there. we were down to 140 seats after the goldwater debacle. we were working very, very hard, and we picked up 47 hit-or-miss seats. it was an unbelievable gain. in 1994 they got 5 had house seats. if you get a tide rolling against the income bebt party, which i think it's starting to roll against the democrats, 55%
