(announcer) what are you going to miss when you have an allergy attack? achoo! (announcer) benadryl is more effective than claritin at relieving your worst mptoms. and works when you need it most. benadryl. you can't pause life. i just want fewer pills and relief that lasts all day. take 2 extra strength tylenol every 4 to 6 hours?!? taking 8 pills a day... and if i take it for 10 days -- that's 80 pills. just 2 aleve can last all day. perfect. choose aleve and you can be taking four times... fewer pills than extra strength tylenol. just 2 aleve have the strength to relieve arthritis pain all day.
9:01 am
next on "msnbc saturday," the health care sales pitch part two. president obama hits the road to
9:02 am
make a sale to the american people. credit card relief. why are banks giving deep debtors a break. how the economy have folks in the red light district singing the blues. a gas station customer turns violent then apologizes. good morning, i'm alex witt. we have the hunt for osama bin laden. is he any closer to getting caught? we begin with a new strategy and the president's aelt care push. he's tayloring it. there could be one accident or job loss away from joining the ranks of the uninsured. >> nearly 6 million more americans lost health insurance. that's 17,000 every single day. we're not just talking americans in poverty.
9:03 am
we're talk iing middle class americans. it can happen to anyone. >> i'm joined live from washington by mike viqueira. good saturday morning to you. >> good morning. >> a new report from the treasury department. can you tell us about that? >> it's a challenge the white house faced. when the debate first began at the summer's outset, the emphasis was on the out set of americans without health insurance. there was walking inside the beltway and bending it down, reducing costs in the health industry that's become a big part of the gross domestic product. that just wasn't speaking to people. today, a new effort from the treasury department comes a report intended to demonstrate
9:04 am
how vulnerable we are. they might not be as comfortable as they are. here are the statistics. 15% of americans go without insurance in a given year. 48% of americans are uninsured over a ten-year span. 57% of americans under age 21 are uninsured under a ten-year span. critics say it's self-serving, but there are statistics. the president has a big rally in minneapolis at the target center before 20,000 people. we can expect him to address that rally later this afternoon. >> given the fact that minnesota has a pretty good health care system, it's one that people look at and say it works, they expect it to be a friendly crowd? >> it's open to if public and a first come, first serve basis. minnesota is a purple state between red and blue has been
9:05 am
more blue than red in the last several years. i should add, there's a counter protest scheduled here on the grounds or west of the capital by the tea party antitax advocates. a lot of them are marching down the street and gathering in front of the white house. they are going to protest the obama policies and health care in particular. >> okay, mike viqueira, we'll check in again. beijing is questioning a tax imposed on tires coming to america. a lot of jobs have been lost because of it. they are calling it protectionist. joe wilson's outbirs got the cash flowing. since shouting you lie, he's raised more than $700,000 for his re-election campaign. his opponent may benefit more
9:06 am
from the outburst. he's raised more than 1 million bucks since wednesday. let's go to the latest on the search for the missing yale student, annie le. mike taibbi is live with the latest. good saturday morning to you. we have a big reward in the case? >> reporter: yes, it's a $10,000 reward. foul play or run away bride. it seems to be more foul play. there's no evidence. even with the reward, there's nothing that would qualify as a strong lead. she has not been seen since entering a med school building tuesday, seen by a security camera. they never saw her leave the building. there are reports one of the professors has been questioned.
9:07 am
she cancelled a class before she was reported missing. fbi investigators are on the case. hundreds of fliers have circulated. le wrote a piece about security issues on and near the yale campus saying it's a city and all cities have parallels, but with a little street smarts you can be another statistic. >> she left her keys and wallet and all her stuff, apparently. i think if she was running away from her groom, she would probably take that with her. >> you need to be careful all the time. >> there's a dangerous neighborhood near the campus. >> you have to be careful. >> be aware. >> your dad called and said to be careful. >> he was concerned. he was like did you hear about the woman who disappeared in the lab. >> reporter: as you said, she
9:08 am
was to be married tomorrow. the wedding has been officially cancelled. her fiance is aiding in the search for her instead of preparing for the wedding. she's not a suspect. >> can you imagine this turn of events? mike, it's -- there was a fire drill -- >> reporter: there was a fire -- >> how does that play into this? maybe she left the building to be part of a fire drill or someone took her out. what are they thinking? >> reporter: typically in a case like this, facts like that will make sense later on when they put the pieces together. her wallet with credit cards and cash was found. it serves two scenarios. a run away bride or a piece of evidence to put the people looking for her on a different course or it could be looked at as part of a crime scene as well. all of those things are subject to interpretation.
9:09 am
now, as i said, no real break in the case. >> thank you, mike for presenting things as we know it now. >> if fbi set up a 24-hour tip line. 877-503-1950. the space shuttle finally touched down in california. "discovery" landed friday after diverting to edwards air force base. a major development in the fight against swine flu. the vaccine for the h1n1 virus works with only one injection. they call the results very important. >> the information we released yesterday in washington, d.c., indicates good news, the vaccine can reduce a response in the
9:10 am
recipient you would predict would be protected with the standard amount. it does it quickly, within eight to ten days after the vaccination. >> the h1n1 vaccine is expected to be widely available by mid-october. released from mayo clinic after suffering a minor stroke earlier this week. he is now back home in st. paul, minnesota. the 67-year-old said he still plans to start his new season of "a prairie home companion" as scheduled. a short trading week. the dow and s&p closed in the red. we got a new look at how consumers feel about the economy and things are looking up. let's go to financial analyst vera gibbons. it could change, right? do you think the economy is rebounding? >> we had good signs last week.
9:11 am
commodity prices are up. also, corporate activity on the m & a fund. kraft trying to buy cadbury. next week, all sorts of clues. we retail numbers, housing. all eyes on the retail data. you know, sales have been down for 12 months. we need the consumers to be back in the game here. >> what about consumer sentiment is it positive? >> it's the highest since june. confidence is up because of stock market gains. income is still squeezed. it's the impact an the recovery. that's why it's muted. >> what about the dollar/gold ratio. dollar falls and gold hits tremendous highs.
9:12 am
>> that's pushing gold higher. investers are getting in there. on the flip side, we have consu consumers selling gold. it's a good time to do so with prices near $1200. they are selling jewelry, taking it to pawnshops, selling it online and taking advantage that gold prices are high. >> is it a good time to invest in gold? >> it does well in inflationary times. it's a good idea to have a small percent as part of a diversified portfolio. for the average investor, that would be the easiest way to get in. it's a risky investment. another sign of the economic times can be found in the most em b embarrassing posts around. we'll take you there in a bit. megan fox is a demon.
9:13 am
what possesses her to rip the hearts of high school boys? it's supposed to be scary. obama's old chicago neighbors say they are out of here. we're going to explain, ahead. ). what should i get? uh, you. you should check out our new leds. the picture's better than life. okay, but i don't want to pay too much. don't worry about it. we'll match those other stores' prices. and we'll deliver and hook it up for free. okay. last question. if you guys are here, who's in the stores? the latest home theater technology and thousands of people eager to help. best buy. buyer be happy. announcer: you could buy 300 bottles of water. or just one brita filter. 9:16 am
a prime piece of real estate is up for sale. president obama's neighbors have just put their house on the market. they have lived in the 17 room, 6,000 square foot home for 16 years. now, they say it's too much house for them. >> children are gone. dogs are gone. you know, if i lived in a room a day, it would take me two weeks to get through the house. so, it's a little more than what
9:17 am
we need right now. >> the price tag is a cool $1.8 million. if you are interested in buying, you will have to be screened by the secret service. new this morning, president obama says if you think your health care is safe under the current system, think again. a new study shows half of all americans under the age of 65 will lose their coverage at some point over the next ten years. >> if you are under the age of 21, chances are you will find yourself uninsured. more than one-third of americans will go without coverage for a year. >> aaron, good morning, good to see you. >> good morning, alex. >> the president has new data to pitch a message. anyone can lose health care. is this a reason people with
9:18 am
coverage should care about reform? >> when he began the debate, he was talking about then insured. it didn't sell to the broader public. what they are trying to do is make the case to everyone, particularly the middle class. health reform matters to them. hey, if you have health insurance you could be at risk as well. he's trying to sell it to a broader audience and make the case it needs to happen. >> look at where it's happening today. minnesota, one of the healthiest states in the union. is this a fitting backdrop for the president's health care push or does it show quality care is possible without reform? >> a lot of people think it's friendly territory for president obama. he's popular there and a lot of people anticipate he will have a friendly crowd.
9:19 am
as mike viqueira mentioned earlier, the rally he's having in minneapolis at the target center is first come first serve. you don't know who is going to show up. i don't think they would have a massive rally if they didn't anticipate on a friendly audience. >> let's talk about the joe wilson. >> you had to go there. >> i had to. you would be barred by what the gove government set up. does it satisfy the right on this issue? >> no. absolutely not. this is actually an issue that galvanizes the far right and left. many know obama when he went to congress on wednesday night and addressed what he called the mistruths and myths he said under his plan there would not
9:20 am
be coverage for illegals. the republicans aren't buying it. joe said you lie. actually, what's interesting is this whole thing created a fire storm in both bases of the party. he's unmasked $700,000 since he shouted out the remark. his opponent, rob miller, raised $800,000. clearly, it hasn't changed a lot of minds. >> is there anything in any of the bills that says this does not apply to illegal immigrants? >> i think the issue here is, you know, the emergency room issue. you know, whether or not undocumented workers can get emergency coverage if they are hurt. they may not have health insurance, but, you know, oftentimes people go to emergency rooms and get coverage regardless. yes, they are working right now,
9:21 am
in particular, the chairman of the finance committee is working on a bill. they are trying to address the issues to make sure citizens, coverage applys to citizens and these issues don't come up. it's tough. there are loopholes now. it's not just an a barack obama thing. there are loopholes and cracks in the system. >> thanks for joining us. >> thanks. you have heard the expression sex sells, right? not as much as before the recession. taking a bite out of the sex business from sex shops to online porn. legal brothels to condemn makers, business is down. experts say folks are trying to make ends meet by the products. carol, when you replaced casual friday with nordic tuesday,
9:22 am
was it really for fun, or to save money on heat? why? don't you think nordic tuesday is fun? oh no, it's fun... you know, if you are trying to cut costs, fedex can help. we've got express options, fast ground and freight service-- you can save money and keep the heat on. great idea. that is a great idea. well, if nordic tuesday wasn't so much fun. new this morning, u.s. military officials tell nbc news secretary gates signed for 3,000 military forces to go to afghanistan as part of a routine deployment. it includes medical teams and mechanics. by the end of the year, 68,000 troops are expected to be in afghanistan. joining us live is roger crest. good morning to you, roger. >> good morning. >> let's look at al qaeda and the state of it and the wake of 9/11 yesterday. where does it stand now as opposed to when we went after it? >> it's taken a tremendous beating from the military perspective, ideological. we have gained success. the question is intent versus
9:26 am
capability. the intent of core al qaeda, bin laden and the people held up in the safe haven is clear, it's trying to attack the united states when they can. what is their capability. because of the pressure they are under, they do not have a capability they had two or three years ago. it hasn't gone away, we are just on the offensive. >> the $25 million reward for osama bin laden, why hasn't it induced anyone to come forward and say he's right there. >> it's a complete waste of time. you are dealing with somebody who has several benefits. he has the benefit of geography. it's difficult to find. he has the benefit of a tribal population that's not going to give him up. there's no scenario where we are going to have one individual that says i'm sick of bin laden. it's time to offer him up to the
9:27 am
officials. >> really? >> we have seen the results of the reward program. nothing in this case. it comes down to intelligence, cooperation with the pakistanis and luck. that's what we are been missing, getting a break. >> how important is it to get him? >> two reasons. we have to hold this man accountable for the accounts of 9/11 and the attacks in east africa in 1998. i hope he's killed. if he's captured, that's fine, too. does he have command over al qaeda? probably not in a significant way. he's important to demonstrate to the network, no matter where you are or how long it takes, we will come after you. >> there's not been another terrorist attack on the u.s. since 9/11, can you explain why is this. >> there's several things.
9:28 am
al qaeda as an organization is not as strong and capable as we feared in 2002 and 2003. everything broke their way in the summer of 2001 to pull off the 9/11 attacks. the second thing, we have expanded our security. strengthened our bordered we have been on the offensive. the number of people we have killed and the number of infrastructure we have disrupted have a cumulative effect. most importantly, the ideological argument they have been making is bad. people recognize what he was saying is not the right way to go. >> okay. always a good way to go to talk with you. thank you very much. >> you get. she's accused of being a

9:33 am
public yet. the sports federation that ordered the test said they are analyzing them. there was a leak to the new newspaper that reported some of the findings that included she has male and female characteristics. she has no ovary or uterus and three times the level of testosterone in her blood of a normal woman. they urge caution with some of the news. they are still deliberating. they don't expect to announce their results until the second week in november. south african sports officials are furious over the way it's been handled. first, the leak she was tested, now the leak of the results of the test. it goes without saying, in south africa, she is a hero. she enjoys universal acceptance and also pride from the people in her country. >> what about the gold medal?
9:34 am
is there any danger that's going to be looked at and may have to give that back? >> reporter: it doesn't seem like that's in jeopardy. she's not accused of cheating or doping. that would put her medal in jeopar jeopardy. they could bar her from competition. that's what has south african officials so upset. that one minister threatening the third world war. if that's the determination they make, it would be unfair and disgusting. they are threatening to sue if they make that determination. >> thank you very much for the update. there's a mess in central arizona. people are using mops and shovels and bulldozers to clean up the mud. let's go to your national forecast. we have explaning to do. bill, good morning. what a mess in arizona. >> yeah, it's not pretty out

9:37 am
>> please, please forgive me. i am so very sorry for taking out my anger on you. i owed you $20 and it wasn't wort it. >> the clerk accepts the apology, but she still faces charges. the search for annie le is intensifying. they are searching for the 24-year-old graduate student on the day before she was to be married. clint is a former fbi profiler and the author of "facing down evil." he's an msnbc analyst as well. give me your take on this now. where do things stand? are we looking for a run away bride? >> this was the challenge for investigators. there are 875,000 missing person reports every year. that's every day. today, there will be 20 to 100 people reported missing.
9:38 am
she was one of that vast number. most of these people are accounted for. most of them were run aways, walk aways, very, very few were kidnapped victims. that's the challenge. did she disappear on her own, was the pressure too much. did it make her put on her get away tennis shoes and head to new mexico or did something happen to her or somebody took her in a car and got her off campus. she's not been seen since. >> in the building was left behind everything. if she was going to be taking off, you have to take your wallet, your money, your credit cards. maybe not your keys, depending on how you are going to get away. all of that -- if you were on the case, what would your gut be telling you? >> again, this is a super bright
9:39 am
woman. voted the next woman to be the next einstein. could she, if she wanted to get away for a week to get her head together, could she have left her stuff there, stuck a couple hundred dollars in her pocket. now, there's worldwide attention. she thought she could drop out for a couple days and trying to figure out how to surface again. or is it more sinister. >> does that make sense, dichb what we know about her. her friends are saying she wouldn't stop talking about how happy she was to get married there's that point. this is a woman to intelligent. she's a double major in graduate school, an md and ph.d. she's worked hard to get to where she is now. the reality of dropping out of sight for awhile, is that really what you think? is it foremost in investigators
9:40 am
mind? >> no, i think they are balancing this. her parents were vietnamese immigrants. i spent a year in vietnam, i understand the culture and the tremendous cultural pressure for her to succeed and save face for the family. this would be an issue for her to disappear. that, in and of itself, the cultural aspect of it would make it that much harder for her to come back. we want it to be that. we want it to be the run away bride. but, for her, either one could be almost as bad. >> yeah, right. okay, clint, many thanks. >> thank you. in a moment, it will be welcome news to any of you who maxed out your credit cards. why banks may give you a break. how will it add up on your bottom line? the five things facing

9:44 am
today, new indication banks may be willing to negotiate with credit card customers who owe big and are having a hard time paying up. now they are open to bargaining to customers. joining me live, nancy, washington post financial reporter. she just wrote an article on this bargaining. good morning to you. >> morning. >> what are we talking about here? >> there's a number of programs the credit card companies have for modifying loans. what they are doing is lowering interest rates in some cases, waving fees, lowering monthly payments or actually forgiving some of the debt. >> really? how does a customer qualify and get access to it?
9:45 am
>> the card companies are not very open about the eligibility requirements. they worry that everyone is going to call up, even people who can afford to pay bills saying hey, you are doing it for everyone else, why can't you do it for me? it's vague, the eligibility requirements. >> someone could call up and say i'm struggling and having trouble and get someone on the line to negotiate? >> they could call the customer service representative and say i'm unemployed or lost my home or having another financial problem. i want to pay my debts, what can you do to help me. >> how is the favor to have credit card companies by how much they charge. what if they tip the sales in having them negotiate? >> the banks are losing money. people are unemployed and not able to pay bills.
9:46 am
the card companies had to give up on the record number of the credit card loans. they are now arguing, we want to get something instead of nothing. let's try to negotiate with these people. >> you spoke with somebody who didn't have to reach out themselves, but got something in the mail. what is that about? >> some companies are approaching the company. they say we realize you have lost your job or your home and we want to help you. in this one case, it was a man in new york. he lost his job. he got a letter from bank of america say iing if you are in trouble call this 800 number. he called and his interest rate was lowered. >> was he missing payments or it was red flagged? >> he had not missed payments, but had a lot of debt, something like $40,000. >> do the banks know how much
9:47 am
traffic on this level they are anticipating? >> they are vague on the specifics. they wouldn't tell me how many customers they are negotiating with. bank of america expects to modify loans for 1.2 million customers this year. chase helped 600,000 people. we're talking about 3 million according to industry estimates. >> they are probably thinking great, they are out there talking about it. listen, for the consumers, it's something great and if they are in need. i'm sure there's a threshold you have to meet to be considered. >> right, not everyone is going to get their loan modified. it's worth calling up and asking. >> thanks, appreciate it. as for people who use debit cards, overspending is a costly mistake. fees add up to billions of dollars. banks alone are expected to
9:48 am
collect billions of dollars in fees and penalties this year alone. a new article suggests the toughest things to face president obama. international hot spots including north korea, iran and afghanistan could give this the most trouble. we join jack jacobs, good morning. >> good morning. >> i want to talk about what we just mentioned. what do you think of this list? >> there are two more in the article. the israeli dispute and iraq. he mentioned all five. he spent time talking about what most people think are convinced is the biggest problem that's not on the list. it's pakistan. politically fragmented, extremely weak centrally, it's full of corruption. security service has bad guys in
9:49 am
it. they won't go in the northwest area to assist the united states, that's the most dangerous. and, they have nukes. >> speaking of that, what about the threats from north korea and iran. direct talks with north korea as well. how will they help? >> they are not going to hurt. we haven't done any real diplomacy with any of these countries. we have exercised in public how they are bad people. we haven't been doing anything, really, to change the situation. with direct talks, we mikt might, if they are in secret. the variables are they are third world countries. the problem with china is they haven't been helpful in squeezing north korea. they are worried about millions of refugees screaming across the
9:50 am
river into china and in the case of iran, the russians have not been helpful because the russians have fierily substantial economic and diplomatic ties with iran and russia does not want to squeeze i ran. >> with regard to iran, what is the likelihood of military intervention by some party is going to have to be what it takes? >> i like your party. i think it's right on the button. i don't think the united states is interested in doing anything. i think ultimately, what happens, if anybody will do anything, if they have the intelligence, the military intelligence to do anything is israel. they are the most pointed threat of iran. they are going to be the guys that respond first. >> thank you so much. >> you're welcome. we are raising the curtain

turning now to the hollywood box office, the crucial summer season is one of the biggest of the year. the u.s. box office ticket sales are at an estimated $4.4 billion so far for this season. still, attendance is off a bit this summer. but now a new crop of fall movies is coming, including this one you're looking at. that is "cloudy with a chance of meatballs." let's talk about the early reads for these films. joining me live with "life and style" magazine, dawn yannick. good morning. >> good morning. >> coming out in september, one getting a lot of attention is "jennifer body" with megan fox. >> yes.
9:55 am
this is a teen horror romp that gives a whole new meaning to a hellish high school experience. we have megan fox, who is kind of a bad girl, but then he becomes possessed by a demon and becomes an even badder girl who is literally a man-eater. she literally eats high school boys. this is from diablo cody, our favorite stripper-turned-screenwriter, so, lots of clever dialogue and fun. it's getting early mixed reviews, but this will definitely be the must-see next weekend as well as the number one at the box office. >> okay. let's move ahead to october.
