9:17 am
the problems of the party bodes well for them. >> what does it tell you about the climate going into the 2010 midterm elections? >> it may not really represent a dramatic shift toward the republicans. maybe a shift away from the democrats. of course, as we know, in every midterm, it's district by district. you know, it's rare that even when it's a midterm election of a national sweep. doesn't have something to do with what's happening at the local level. and again, we have to see whether this is just a sort of fringe element of party or something bigger than that. that said, what really matters in the midterms is how energized the parties are. hard to get people out without a president on the ballot and if it means people who are republicans or independents leaning republican or just affects democrats in the middle will actually vote in 2010 that could mean the difference. >> you know, as we were covering the protests yesterday, it was hard to figure out who was

behind it. i mean, even looking at the signs of the protesters holding, a big mix of issues. there was tort reform, liberty not dead. one side red. vote no. health care. cap in tax. immigration. three issues on that sign alone. what was this protest really about? >> don't tread on me. live free or die. look. we have seen this at even the health care town hall meet wgs a wide range of issues. mostly centered around anti-. anti-obama. anti-the growth of government. and that translates into whatever issue seems to be at hand so any of the issues you mentioned most recently, of course, health care. but it's not -- it does sort of unifying issue but an organizing principle which is we're against this. this is not unlike the left of the bush years. at times, the iraq war and many other issues. globalization. free trade. so this is not totally new phenomenon. >> right. talk about the president hitting

the road on the campaign for health reform this week. who is he trying to reach at this point? the public or the lawmakers? sit still both? >> well, it is still both. it's absolutely the public at this point in the hopes, of course, the public will continue to put pressure on the lawmakers. they didn't really do that in august. certainly not in the way he hoped in any case so, yes, at this point trying to go out into the country to send a signal back to washington, look, your people are paying attention and liked what they heard from me last week. they liked what i'm saying and getting people ginned up in the rallies like yesterday in minnesota. didn't do that in a long time and trying to send a signal back to congress say, look, people are with me and if you vote against this, you will have a really hard time explaining yourself. >> okay. as always, anne, good to see you. thank you so much. >> thank you. well, stay with us and here's one reason why. jennifer connelly on the brink of tears. why was she choked up at the big toronto film festival? you know the guy that threw the shoes at president bush?

missing person's case they're dealing with. >> we are not in a position today to conclude whether this is a missing person's case or whether criminality is involved and i need to stress that. >> and there's still no sign of the 24-year-old grad student on this, the very day that was to be her wedding day. joining me live is clint van zandt, a former fbi profiler and author of "facing down evil" and a msnbc analyst, as well. clint, no major announcements and the news out of the area around with the professionals saying talk about bloody clothing, things found in the building. >> yeah. >> let's reconcile this. what do you think is the thought process behind the fbi and other law enforcement agencies right now? >> i think for the 100-plus investigators, alex, that are assigned to this case, i think probably their focus shifted from the potential of a runaway bride to something much more ominous at this time. you know, as a parent and grand
9:30 am
parent, you're still going to cling to hope. you know, you want your child to come back alive but investigators have to face the reality that the idea of bloody clothing hidden up in a false ceiling, that probably has something to do with this case. i think they're waiting to get the dna evidence to confirm it's her blood but was there so much blood she couldn't have survived or just a small amount of blood that indicated if she was a victim of foul play, she could have simply been taken from that building and may still be alive? that's the hope. >> but the fbi spokesperson there refused to answer if we're talking about foul play. why not face foul play? why not get that out there? >> well, until you know, alex, until you know, the last thing the fbi or local authorities want to do is say we found bloody clothing. she is probably dead when that may not be the case. as an investigator, i look for a person if they're kidnapped,
9:31 am
whatever happens to them, i'm looking for a live person until i see that dead body. >> okay. what about this entire area being name add crime scene? and also, the fact that it's taken five days to get anything substantive in terms of evidence to consider. >> yeah. yeah. number one, alex, as you know, this is 120,000 square foot building. five floors of labs, classrooms, everything else so, of course, wherever that clothing was found stuffed in the ceiling, that's going to be like ground zero. but we're also looking where was annie at the time? where might have she been inside of that building? again, we know she went in but there's no camera shot that shes her going out. the question is, if we don't have a picture of her going in, look, folks, she must be inside that building some place, dead or alive. >> what about the reports of a body? what happened with that? was that all just erroneous rumor? >> so far, the fbi says it was.
9:32 am
last night, when we saw the press conference, the special agent in charge of the new haven said absolutely, positively, no body. i take the fbi obviously having been there 25 years at their word and i also know that there are many times where investigative reasons not to release information. alex, as you and i are talking if annny le was a victim of foul play, her assailant could be trying to develop intelligence information to determine what they should do. they don't want to give information to flee or cover the crime if there was a crime. >> at this point, no suspects. no persons of interest and yet people are being questioned and there was one person in particular questioned that everybody saw and then that person got into a car and left with the fbi. do we know anything more on that? >> no. the challenge is, alex, again, huge building. hundreds of people inside. now, the logical thing is you're
9:33 am
going to interview everybody inside that building but, you know, we have come in buildings before. we take our pass, we swipe it. we're going into the door. that's security, right? two or three people behind us to run in because it's raining, carrying packages or other things like that. so when people say this is a high security building, it's only high security if you've got a guard at every door checking every badge writing down every name. otherwise, you rely on key pass and rely on people saying, hey, use your own pass and human nature is not like that. we let people come in with us. >> yeah. clint, do you put any sort of relevance in the so10:00 a.m. c and then the fire alarm? is there a possible connection or you don't think so? you you don't like coincidences. with no history of fire alarms, the authority say it was set off by steam, an experiment or
9:34 am
something. so what? that doesn't say whether it was accidental or intentional. someone could be diabolical enough to set off an alarm, know that everybody would have to bail out of the building at one time and that would give someone with nefarious purposes the ability to sneak out with or without this victim. >> all right. clint, thank you very much for the insights, as always. >> thanks. >> the fbi has a tip line, if you have information, they ask you to call 877-503-1950. let's go now to a democratic scene off the coast of corpus christi, texas. the coast guard coming the rescue of two men. they were in a life raft next to the flames when the coast guard arrived. one had burns over 20% of his body. let's take a look at the flames. this fire in san francisco was caused by lightning strikes in a thunderstorm. a transformer exploded after it was hit and the two cars parked
9:35 am
underneath it soon engulfed in flames. at least 20 fires from the more than 400 recorded strikes. more than 50,000 homes lost power in the storm. now the economy, key indicators this week. we'll get a gauge on inflation when the consumer and wholesale prices indices are released. both reports last month showed prices falling. retail sales figures coming out and indications of an increase and forecasters expect positive news on the number of housing starts. well, representative joe wilson's outburst in president obama's speech to congress is turning into a serious payday. since shouting "you lie" in the address he's raised thousands for the reelection campaign and some reports of million dollars but the 0 poe innocent may stand to benefit more. democrat rob miller is definitely raised more than a million dollars since wednesday.

tens of thousands of tea party protesters filled the capitol yesterday spurred by anger over federal anger and billed as the first ever taxpayer march on washington but the signs and chants proved it wasn't just government spending getting people riled up. i'm joined live from washington by eleanor clift and jonathan allen. another good morning to both of you. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> eleanor, d.c. has hosted plenty of large-scale protests, certainly. the nature of this is is any different than other citizen protests you have seen in washington? >> typically you think of the protests with the left but the pro-life movement mounted some extraordinarily large and compelling protests over the years. i think what's different about this is the relung tans of some of the republicans, more traditional party leaders, to fully participate. the calls for the succession and the name calling of president
9:37 am
obama, you know, fascist, communist, which to my eyes have really little basis in reality. but i do think that the -- this is based on a growing anxiety of the involvement of government in every day life and that there's a parole-like urgency that is mounting about the deficit. and ross perot emerged in 1992 with the deficit as his issue with his chalk board and pointer and he had a major impact on the election. and i think this issue is out there to be grabbed although i think the republicans do not have -- may have the message but they sure don't have a messenger. i think the white house after having been through the summer is now beginning to look at this and i think is aware of the fact that they may have a serious opposition movement here in their hands and could have a major impact on the 2010 congressional elections. >> what do you think, jonathan? how representative are the
9:38 am
protests? >> in at least one very visible way. the crowd yesterday, you could have white balanced a crowd against it. it's a very, very white crowd, male and middle aged crowd and to the extent that the republican party is diminishing, this is more representative of what's left of the republican party. i think a lot of moderates in the republican party left to become democrats, to become independents. some of these folks in the crowd also independents but at the moment for republicans, part of the trouble their leadership is having is this is the vocal if not majority certainly strong vocal minority in the party right now. >> eleanor, political analyst earlier today said the white house is pretty dismissive of all of this. can they afford to be that way? are they underestimating the power of the right? >> i think there is as jonathan said much to be dismissive of in the sense that i do think this is a minority of a minority. but their views really do get
9:39 am
into the mainstream and they spread and create an anxiety among the general public and i think it's fair to say that this movement is based on the tea party protest which is a reaction to the spending of this administration and in fairness the previous administration. and that is impacting public opinion about spending more money on a health care reform bill. so i think the white house has to deal with it somehow and i think democrats who look at these protests get really nervous that the white house is just a little too passive and too high minded and to use your word, too dismissive of what could be a growing political movement out there that could spread beyond the fringe of the fringe of people to succeed and have gun rights. >> jonathan, overall, what is your bottom line here? the tea party protests, do they help or hurt the gop? >> i think helping the republicans on some of the issues, helping republicans leaders figure out what will
9:40 am
motivate and energize the base but they hurt republicans with the mainstream when you've got some of the stuff that's just wildly untrue being said out there. some of the death panel stuff and the angriest stuff against the president and the personal stuff against him really doesn't help the republican party. >> okay. jonathan and eleanor, always good to see the two of you. have a great sunday. >> thank you, you, too. >> you can watch "meet the press" for a health care debate. you can meet the press reair check that out today at 2:00 p.m. eastern here on msnbc sunday. well, coming up next, jay leno is making television history but can he beat crime time in prime time? you're watching msnbc sunday. in the time it takes you to watch a bad reality show, you can learn to switch off hungry and lose weight. right now weight watchers is offering a whole month free.

>> tina fey sure got a lot of mileage out of impersonating sarah palin on "saturday night live" and now rewarded for it. fey winning a creative arts emmy award for best guest actress in a comedy show. well deserved honor right there. sylvester stall loan can thank the security at the red carpet walk. a nut job came at him. he was quickly pulled away and told to beat it. stall loan didn't seem to be bothered at all and continued on the way into the theater. well, tears from actress jennifer connelly at the toronto film festival. she was emotional while defending herself after reports she was criticized by president of astrotv. he apparently ripped a picture of connelly in half after not seeing her at his afterparty. >> my husband and i did go to your party last night but only very briefly.

and i had to leave early because yesterday was the first anniversary of my father's death. and i'm very sorry. i would have loved to have stayed longer but was not able to so please accept my apology. sorry. >> okay. jennifer connelly making an apology? i don't think so. reportedly he says he was just joking ripping up connelly picture. fun funny. face of prime time television is about to change. "the jay leno show" debuts monday at 10:00 eastern time and even jay himself is making fun of all the hype. >> jay leno. the hype. my face every two minutes on the network. i don't blame you. make you a deal. watch the show monday night. i can make it all go away. >> business ed for of "tv guide"

joins us live. with a good morning to you. >> good morning. >> jay admit it is show is not reinventing the wheel. let's listen to what he had to say about that. >> i got new show coming on at 10:00 and going to need a lot of jokes. i know the guy likes to stay on top of the news but i had no idea -- i took transportation to get here. general motors. everything in television has been done before. it just is -- it just hasn't been done in the last, maybe, generation or so. i mean, when i was a kid, comedy shows were a staple of television jack benny or carol burnett. >> so, he brings up those shows and my producer's joking saying i hope he ends up doing the carol burnett tug on the ear every night just as a harkening back to what was then. are we looking at back to the future here? >> we don't know what the show is going to be. not going to be a classic
9:47 am
variety show where you have singers and different acts come out and produced comedy. jay doing his stand-up, doing an opening monologue. he has a group of comedians put together in the field putting together packages. kind of sounds like more like the daily show than something like red skelton and very topical comedy, politics and the news, and it is going to be on every night which nobody has ever done in television. >> so to that end, this could change the face of prime time television. >> if it works it could change the face of prime time television but that's a big if. nbc has very low expectations from a ratings standpoint. they're not doing this because this was a flash of genius. they're doing it to save money. nbc has had very poor hour-long dra mat development over the last couple of years and wanted

to keep jay leno from going to another network at late night and this show getting 2 million viewers in the 18 to 49 demographic it will be a financial success for them. that is not a high bar. >> i was going to say, you know, jay leno. this personality, the way he's known around this country. don't you -- i mean, he can deliver that. i mean, he's -- >> he should be able to deliver it. we won't know the first week. you're going to have to -- when a show is on every night, you have to see how it does over a few months, really, to determine that. and again, it's not a high bar. it is a program that is there to make money as opposed to hour-long dramas which cost a lot to produce and are having -- challenging the ratings right now. >> you look at guests on shows like this, the guest not the first week, jerry seinfeld, great classic. can way west, jay-z, rihanna.
9:49 am
will be a venue for a-list stars in prime time. >> it's prime time show. i have to say, i'm not -- i think that's over a few weeks the guests are on. >> i think the first -- >> the second night he's having michael moore on, not an a-list guest but that being the case, people like jay, a lot of them show up for work. will they show up, how many nights a week? it depends. again, if there's rerun on, if someone's favorite drama show in repeats, this is an alternative for them. it's fresh every night about 46 of the weeks of the year and people like topical comedy right now, seeing comedians come on and make fun of politicians and whatever in the news. >> well, you know, something after getting in bed earlier than normally watching jay leno at that hour. you know? one way to go to bed laughing, right? perhaps. let's hope so. we are laughing. laugh.

ready. here we go. thanks. tune in to "the jay leno show" premier tomorrow night at 10:00 eastern. time now for msnbc sunday's yes it's true. this from turkey where nine women thought they were taking part in a big brother-style tv show. turned out it was a creepy website staying there for two months until police stormed the villa this week. they thought it was fishy encouraged to walk around in bikinis, fight and dance by the pool, naked pictures of them sold online and a worried relative called police. so far, only one arrest. some people attending an art exhibit in colombia couldn't believe their eyes. not the art, it was the tray of cocaine for the guests. perhaps cocktails not enough and the cell phone video is going to show us people helping themselves to the coke. word got out. a criminal complaint was made. now the artist could face eight years in the big house. you heard of pick pocketing, right? how about put pocketing?

tomorrow general motors is launching an ambitious program to pique interest and try to recoup part of their shvifrpging market share, calling it may the best car win and putting their best man out front to promote it. new general motors chairman ed whitaker jr. >> we're putting our money where our mouth is. buy a new chevy, buick, gmc or cadillac. if you're not 100% happy return it. we'll take it back. that's our new 60-day satisfaction guarantee. >> joining me live is michelle krebs, senior analyst with

edmunds.com a. good morning to you. >> good morning to you. >> this is a money-back guarantee, no strings attached. as long as you neat criteria which we'll get to that in a second. but the program, is this going to work for gm? >> well, we don't know if it will work but they have got to try something because it's critical for general motors to start selling cars and bringing in revenue because they are not going to be successful if they just cut costs. they have got to work the revenue side of the equation as well. >> we'll get to the requirements to bring a car back if you decide to invest in this. buyers, can return the car, but the return must be made between 31 and 60 days after the purchase. you have to have driven it for a month, not more than two. after the return it has to show less than 4,000 miles on it, and the owner's got to be current on the payments so they had to have made the down payment, the first payment and the second one on time. what is your take on this promo
9:56 am
overall? you think it is a clever marketing ploy or do you think it's a desperate move or both? >> it's probably both. it has a little bit of deja vu with lee iacocca saying if you find a better car, buy it. that worked to turn chrysler around. general motors has an issue because the american public which is now the main stockholder of general motors is not happy that we became the stockholders, so they have got to convince the american people to support the company that they now own. >> well, it's part of a centerpiece of an aggressive marketing campaign that it hopes will narrow the so-called perception gap between gm cars and, say, asian and german automakers cars. the fact that the american public own this is company you think the public will buy into this? >> i'm not sure because they are so angry with the government bailout. but this has been a long time battle. general motors has been
9:57 am
fighting -- and detroit automakers have been fighting this perception, myth for some time. ford has done a better job of overcoming that by actually they have benefitted by not taking the federal bailout and have done a good job of convincing american people to consider their cars so gm needs a similar success. >> if we look at the stats, gm's u.s. sales down about 35% so far this year, it's market share at an all-time low. the public in all likelihood associates the company with bankruptcy. how much is riding on this? >> everything is riding on what gm does in the next year or two. they have got to convince the american public to buy their cars, they are now down to only four divisions, too. that's one of the criteria, it's only buick, cadillac, chevy and gmc which are now the only divisions that general motors is going to focus on. >> all right, michelle krebs with edmunds.com, thank you for weighing in.
