the badge was taped on his head. this paints a most troubling picture. none about his death point away from the possible he was killed for his afill yalgs with the united states government. we are joined on the phone by lexington beings kentucky, correspondent jeffrey mcmurray who has been covering this story, ap story on this day is co-bylined by mr. mcmurray and rog alford. >> thanks for joining us. this witness jerry weaver had previously been known he was among the people who came across the body? >> it hadn't been known. it was something my colleague
9:01 pm
had been working on trying to figure out how to track down in the last 24 hours. the body was found near a family cemetery with the names "hosk if in" on the tomb stones. the amazing thing i see having been to the scene myself and realized how remote the area is, is that mr. sparkman didn't go missing until wednesday or thursday in a remote area of the daniel boone national forest. this family gathering or members of the family stumbled across a disturbing crime scene. >> in terms of circumstances of the body when it was found, and
9:02 pm
this is why we are leading with the story frankly and why this is so disturbing, you quote mr. weaver has describing. in minute detail the condition which he found the body and the way that mr. weaver was -- excuse me, the way mr. sparkman was bound. can you describe that? >> yes. i put the premise again i did not personally speak with mr. weaver, my colleague did it is my understanding mr. weaver found the body bound, duct taped, tied to a tree. we were told by law. already he was tied to the tree. he was technically hanging, but his feet were contact in the ground at the time the body was found. it is a bizarre, strange case. l.a. is not using the word
9:03 pm
"stumped" we are two weeks later and there's been no announcement of an arrest and no information other than the preliminary cause of deathes asphyxiation. >> with the confirmation the word "fed" was written across mr. sparkman's chest and the new information about the i.d. being taped to his otherwise body at the staple is leading us to worry to the fact he was a federal employee. mr. weaver said he saw an identification tag duct-taped to the neck. you have two other sources, people who say that tag was specifically his census worker i.d.? >> without getting into too much did he bail, much of the
9:04 pm
information mr. weaver provided us, we were able to corroborate with law enforcement sources who spoke on the condition of ano anonity. that's how we reported new information we reported tonight. >> those new developments seem to be breaking this case wide open. thank you for your time and reporting. >> thank you. joining us is ron mott covering the story. he joins us on the phone. thanks for being with us, appreciate it. >> thank you, rachel. >> i understand you found a strong suspicion of government
9:05 pm
generally among people who live in that area. you can't generalize everyone, but what can you tell us about the overall political atmosphere there? >> obviously to all law-abiding citizens of the commonwealth, but to all thing that will come to clear as this investigation goes forward, is that part of the commonwealth of kentucky, clay county where this body was found, there is a general sense of lawlessness there. there are people down there bringing in alcohol and there are hidden marijuana fields there. this is a high concentration of
9:06 pm
methamphetamine there, but the fact he was killed is yet to be seen. he may have stumbled on to a scene someone didn't want to see. i get the sense officials know more than we want them to know. and a lot came out because of the reporting and others. >> all of these new details do create the expectation we will hear something more specific from law enforcement. as you know we've been hearing they haven't determined whether this was homicide, suicide, but to found a body bound and foot, flagged with a federal employee tag taped to the body and defaced with the word "fed" it's hard to imagine this is anything other than homicide.
9:07 pm
we are still waiting for law enforcement conformation. >> absolutely. the census detector out of abundance of caution for that particular area has pulled back and temporarily suspended door-to-door canvassing. whether that is going to spread around the country, we'll have to see. clearly, there are people in this country who have disdain for government of any kind, and particularly the federal government. so it's going to be interesting to see how this proceeds going forward. it is a sad story on the base level a family lost a member and a lot of people in laurel county where he was a part-time school teacher, they are saddened his life ended this way. and a cancer survivor went back to college, got his degree and gave the commencement speech.
9:08 pm
all i wanted to do was be a full-time teacher. he was trying to earn a little extra money taking the census for the u.s. government and lost his life as a result of doing so. >> ron mott, nbc news correspondent, thank you very much for your reporting. thanks for join us tonight. >> you bet. >> there is much more ahead, including more about the truth about the lies about acorn. that's next. tonight, more into our continuing investigation into the witch-hunt acorn. the corporate groups, boldly dishonest tactics and the facts. it's been led by conservative media outlets. the decision has been by congress to strip acorn of all federal funding. the defund acorn act of 2009 passed through both houses of congress with big bipartisan support. the problem is that it seems to be really unconstitutional. the defund acorn act has a bill of attaineder problem. it's one of those things that
9:13 pm
sounds obscure like the commerce clause or the privacy punubra. it says bills of attaineder are banned. you can't target one specific group of individuals or one group of people. they looked into the acorn act of 2009 to see if it specifically targets anyone. they found probable cause it does. there is a good possibility this legislation which republicans are so xwooexcited to be toutint seems to be article i constitutional. they are going to run on the anti-acorn fact until 2010. how to save and salvage the defund acorn act? they need to make sure it doesn't violate the constitution as boldly as it does now.
9:14 pm
where it's going to say it's going to cut off funding for an organization that's been indicted for breaking campaign finance laws or fraud with any agency, that can't be only again enforced unless this one group. it's got to be for everyone. so giant government defense contractors, lockheed martin and northrop grumman? lockheed martin had to pay $68 million and northrop grumman, you've got to go. if fraud is our new enthusiasm,
9:15 pm
blackwater has a problem, too. if fraud is not bad enough, how about murder? five blackwater have been charged with iraq. how about the people they are killing aren't just iraqi civilians, but u.s. troops? kbr with its government contracts is under investigation for killing 16 american troops electrocuted through the shoddy water for our troops in iraq. to be fair, i will admit if we are talking about behavior by contractors that warrants them being defunded, none of those things i described are
9:16 pm
prosecution like the two conservative activists that went from acorn office to acorn camera until they got a reaction that would play well on fox news. if it is what it takes to get a government contract defunded, we'll have to talk about prostitution broadly and the government contractor known as armor group. their employees were made famous after the release of these pictures that show the contractors barely clothed and shooting vodka out of places you won't expect. the same armored group personnel being paid by you and me were also allegedly engaged in a prostitution ring in kabul. if we are going to talk
9:17 pm
contractors and prostitution we have to talk about dyncorp. in the year 2000, at least 13 dyncorp employees were sent home from bosnia after they were found to be taking part in a bosnian sex slave ring, not a fake prostitution ring, but actual prostitution ring from dyncorp. dyncorp still gets a lot of government money. today dyncorp landed a new $32 million contract with the air force after the $915 million contract they got in june. the contract in embassy, they'll still got that contract with the
9:18 pm
state department. blackwater has multimillion dollar contracts with the state department, defense contract and cia. kbr was just awarded a new $19 million army contract in february, despite being investigated in the deaths of those 16 u.s. troops. not only have they not been defunded by outraged members of congress, they get spectacularly lucrative government contracts. if you want to defund acorn, go for it. they are an imimportant organization, to you are sure. if this isn't just a witch-hunt, if congress is going of a fraud and worse, we can look why nothing ever inspired them to defund anyone before acorn? after that, cut them all loose.
9:19 pm
joining us now is correspondent from "the nation" and author of "blackwater." i apologize for being hot under the collar for this. i'm riled up by this story. >> everyone should be. >> if the defund acorn language survafbs as it is, are defense contractors worried about congress actually cutting them off? >> absolutely not. the fact of the matter is democrats and a lot voted on this. only a handful of senators voted on the other side. only a handful never have come forward and produced a defund acorn act or defund dyncorp act. one voted in pro of acorn.
9:20 pm
on the one hand you have an organization that registered 1.3 million to vote. 400,000 members works with the poor. they don't have lobbying power in the form of massive campaign kriks. you have 600 war corporations on the u.s. governor payroll. 25 to 40 cents on every dollar we spend or the war in afghanistan that, money goes directly to these war corporations who return campaign dollars to you the republicans and democrats. that is the real scandal here. >> the thing frustrating and why i do have this sort of unexpected emotion about it, we talk about a lot of outrageous things all the time, but the story grabs me. it's because acorn doesn't have to be a sainted organization. they don't have to be perfect in order for what's being done to them to be an outrage.
9:21 pm
i'm trying to contextualize them. >> if there was a moment where there should have been a standard, it would have been the bush folks with the torture programs, eric prince with blackwater. this is $53 million in federal funding that went for low-income housing, poor people housing. you are talking about an equivalent amount of money halliburton got every day in iraq. the fact of the matter is acorn got pennies compared to what these massive war contracting firms got. as you point out rightly, we are talking about murder, child prostitution and all sorts of misconduct against american
9:22 pm
personnel. the crimes compare to the crimes of the war contractors that go unconfronted by democrats and republicans. >> we saw such huge democratic votes in the defund acorn bills. do you think that is reversible among democrats? >> if representative allen grayson is going to say let's defund all these organizations and the rest did it as part of a witch-hunt against acorn, it's a said day in this country. that means there is no spine in that congress. >> jeremy skayhill, great to have you on the show. news of some political movement in washington on health care. could conservative democrats be just plain democrats?
9:23 pm
9:26 pm
9:27 pm
baucus grew a spine, kind of, baby steps. >> senator baucus did get testy with senator kyl, trying to slow you down. >> it's slower isn't better. >> the people always supported you. do you think the conservative democrats is finally dissolving because of that? >> i've been working on my people skills, eye contact, firm handshake, pointing out denying the will of their constituents, it's a process. >> it's good for you to joining us. >> you can't spell team without "m-e." >> i guess. it doesn't look like you have much of a team.
9:28 pm
it's a process, i like your attitude. as bill said, conservative democrats are suddenly feeling political heat for opposing their own party's agenda on heflt reform. the senator from arkansas saw heat from 8 hu. the investigative reporting on the strangely and awesome deal he got from a drug store chain. congressman ross has been fighting against the public option, another element of health reform. he had been targeted and threatened by progressive groups like change congress and the fdl pact. and to his opposition to a public insurance option despite

its big popularity in his district. despite ignoring my increasingly plaintive asks for an interview, he declared himself to be the subject of, "a left wing special interest conspiracy." this is a special kind of left wing with conspiracy, one that involve involv involves convincing a drug store chain to pay more and to say they support more comprehensive reform than he does. it's all a conspiracy to make mike ross look bad. think how people are involved in this conspiracy to make it work. mind-boggling. even as congressman ross finds a left-wing conspiracy, his position on health reform is at odds of the people he is supposed to be representing.
9:30 pm
polling of 91 house swing district leaked on to the internet machine and shows 53% of people in those blue dog districts support a public option. 65% of americans overall support a public insurance option. the watch dog websites and political action committees are not likely to let them forget it. their latest target is congressman jim cooper. the accountability now has set up a website naming mr. cooper as a key opponent of health reform under president clinton. they are threatening him with a democratic primary challenge. president obama beat john mccain by 13 points, which means mr. cooper can't cite the inherent

9:38 pm
right after that, pow, right in the kisser, he hits them with this secret nuclear activity by iran way outside the lines of what iran is supposed to be doing. the french president stood next to obama going after iran today. he said iran is on a two-month deadline to face up or face sanctions. if diplomacy got reported like war does, i think what we would be reporting right now is shock-and-awe. joining us is chief foreign affairs correspondent andrea mitchell. thank you for coming on the show tonight. >> well put. you put it in the right context. >> good. >> glad to be here. >> is it true iran is facing a much more unified pressure or opposition than they were a week ago? >> this never happened before. we have been plodding along

watching this diplomacy inch by inch for so many years now. for the first time, russia has stood by the president. their statement today could not have been better if written by the white house itself. medvedev told students at the university of pittsburgh last night he really likes barack obama. so personal diplomacy in a ronald reagan, gorbachev way, he says he doesn't try to lecture me. we are of the same generation and i learned we were studying law at the same time. i was reading from law review articles he edited. that sets the stage for the fact when barack obama took medvedev aside and told him this news
9:40 pm
about iran, that iran was moving in a dangerous direction, was crossing a red line, if you will, medvedev listened and took it in. they gave him a special, him and his experts a special experts intelligence briefing. it was the u.s., france and great britain. >> this seems like a diplomatic roundhouse. it seems like a heavy hit to have landed, given this was not necessarily new information. it's not necessarily all that shocking information, given how deceitful iran has been about nuclear capacity in the past, but he turned it into a shocking press conference and big diplomatic gains. >> there is something new as of a couple of months ago. they've seen in the last few months and recent weeks, iran crossed a line. iran was beginning to develop this facility, which was an
