bloomfield, west virginia, where it is coming down there. what's the latest? obviously other than what i can see there. >> reporter: no doubt about it, tamron. you could probably have the winter games with this ice/snow mixture just beating down on us. when i say beating down, i mean beating down. this stuff hurts when it hits you in the face. this is not the kind that you're going to make good snowballs out of. if you are able to get one, it will be a pretty good one. i'm going to step away and show you there are some people still out on the highways trying to make their trek across southern west virginia and southwestern virginia. virginia has declared a state of emergency already but folks are still out and about on the roads. i went into one of the local stores here. there were about three or four people braving these conditions. this is an absolute mess. winter storm warnings all across the two virginias. the wind is picking up now. it is picking up strong. most of the warnings go into late tomorrow afternoon and
11:01 am
tomorrow night. so this is just an absolute mess in southern west virginia. as you can see the wind is really picking up strong here, tamron. >> you can hear it pelting off your microphone. thank you very much live from bloomfield, west virginia. thank you, greg. major news today on unemployment, the nation's unemployment rate fell unexpectedly in january to 9.7%. that is the lowest level. the economy still lost 20,000 jobs. checking on wall street to see how things are shaping up early this morning, you see the dow is down 30 points. the s&p down two. the nasdaq down two as well. we saw a significant loss yesterday. the dow was down over 200 points. a major sell-off after the overseas markets had some trouble. hampton pearson, let's talk about this. the unemployment rate 9.7%. is that because of things that are happening in washington? what's behind the numbers here?
11:02 am
>> reporter: that headline fell to 9.7%, psychologically below 10%, the reality inside the numbers tells a different story. we have updated revisions from the labor department. we've lost 8.4 million jobs since the start of the recession in december 2007. that's 1.3 million more than had been previously reported. and the job loss totals for 11 of the last 12 months were revised downward. the current snapshot 14.8 million americans out of work. 6.3 million for six months or longer. that's an increase over last month's total. last month construction took a big hit losing 75,000 jobs. some of that was weather related. both manufacturing and retail trade actually increased jobs. bottom line, what this means is we have a much bigger hole to dig out of once the economy finally begins to actually add jobs and turn positive. >> hampton, thank you very much. to note the president will speak

with some small business owners in maryland. we'll hear what he has to say about these jobs numbers after that meeting. well, toyota's chief executive is speaking out for the first time since the company announced global recall of nearly 4.5 million vehicles two weeks ago. we he apologized for the recalls and made promises to make improvements. phil lebeau joins us now from a toyota dealership in park ridge, illinois. so, phil, an apology from the top man at toyota. but clarify here what's going on with the prius. is it or will it be the focus of a recall? >> reporter: there's been speculation, tamron, coming out of japan that the prius could be recalled. toyota has said emphatically for the last 24 hours we're not planning on recalling. we're stopping the sale of the prius as we look into the issues surrounding the brakes. they are looking into the issues and what you're likely to see at
11:04 am
some point, some type of a safety alert where they say we'll see if we can modify these. that's different from a recall. they are not planning on doing a recall with the prius although they circulate out of japan. japan is where a lot of reporters were at the press conference. the ceo of toyota, the man whose grandfather started the company, came out today. he was emphatic in saying we goofed. we made a mistake. we're going to get back to figuring out quality and how to make sure that quality is in all of our vehicles and what went wrong here. >> all right. phil lebeau live for us at a toyota dealership. thank you, phil. developing now word that two american doctors have been killed in a helicopter crash in the dominican republic near the border with haiti. the two were on a humanitarian mission hoping to get into haiti. the pair left port-au-prince or headed to santiago when their helicopter went down in the water there. and breaking news involving

actor charlie sheen. these are pictures of a car or vehicle crash off the side of a cliff and we're hearing that this vehicle belongs to charlie sheen. you see it in the middle of a ravine. the car just nudged in the middle. let's get the scoop on what's happening with charlie sheen. courtney hazlett, he has a lot of personal problems, could have some legal problems as well, what's going on with this breaking news? >> it was really difficult to make that out there. there were conflicting reports. some saying that he had called his car in as stolen and that it was found but the lapd has come out saying they received one of those onstar messages saying that the car had crashed and what not and that's how they ended up finding it. no word yet from charlie sheen or his reps. it is still early on the west coast and they're bracing themselves today for a possible arrest of the actor. he's facing felony menacing and misdemeanor assault charges
11:06 am
based on the christmas altercation he had with his wife. so things not really going well, to say the least, for charlie sheen. >> i have to ask you, do they know if someone was in the vehicle? >> no word yet. it doesn't appear anyone is in the vehicle. they've heard no word that anyone is hurt. obviously they haven't gotten the car out to investigate further. just another chapter. >> we'll talk with you later in the hour. some live pictures i've been talk i talking about. media frenzy outside of a los angeles courthouse where michael jackson's doctor is supposed to go to turn himself in in just a few hours and for days now speculation that dr. conrad m murray will be charged with involuntary manslaughter and we're hearing he is going to surrender whether he is charged or not. stephanie stap ton is live outside the courthouse are more. stephanie, why would he turn himself in if he's not charged? that sounds strange. >> reporter: well, yeah, you
11:07 am
might think it sounds strange but actually we talked to a legal analyst who says it's a bold move. it could actually go in his favor. the analyst says that it could make murray look like he's cooperative, like he wants to help out, and it could bode well for his case if this case does, in fact, go before a jury. but here outside the courthouse now we are awaiting what we believe to be the surrender of dr. conrad murray. his spokesperson came out late last night saying the doctor will, in fact, surrender here at 1:30 today. whether or not those charges are actually filed, so that's what's happening here as the rain has just started to fall, tamron. >> all right, stephanie, thank you so much. perhaps the only way to keep the paparazzi and other folks away is to bring a little rain to the story. thank you, stephanie. ten americans in haiti facing trial on child abduction charges, officials could be looking at the so-called ringleader more closely than the others. and the first-ever tea party

welcome back. this is tamron hall live. we're keeping our eye on the massive storm that will be pounding the west coast. we just took a live shot out of west virginia where our reporter was getting pelted with what sounded like snow mixed with ice. they've shut down some schools in washington, d.c. the government is expected to shut down around 2:00 p.m. in anticipation of this. we have reports of cancellations at both airports in the d.c. area as well as philadelphia. we're keeping an eye on this

major system that is really supposed to beat up the east coast over the weekend. another big story, ten american missionary are expected to stand trial in haiti on child abduction charges. they had hoped to be freed yesterday after spending a week in jail, but, instead, they were charged with kidnapping and conspiracy for trying to take a busload, 33 haitian children, to neighboring dominican republic. nbc's michelle kosinski joins us live from port-au-prince. i was just hand add note that the americans were just taken out of the jail, just left the jail. what does this mean? what's going on there? >> reporter: yeah, we saw them leave. i was able to talk to them through the window of their van. i asked them if they were okay, if anyone was ill because we've been getting reports from their family members in idaho that they were in immediate need of care. at least one person was, and that they were concerned for their personal safety at the moment. they didn't say a word to me. they just looked at me without saying anything at all as they were taken away from here.
11:13 am
we've been able to confirm through their attorney that they're going to offices to meet with a judge, a different judge than yesterday. this is the next step in the process after they were indicted yesterday. this is also the point in time that we believe their attorney will ask that they be released. at least nine of them is what he was looking for, but hopefully all ten of them. the outcome of that, that's what we're waiting for right now, tamron. >> and, michelle, i have a report that the american ambassador was there or at least may have commented on the situation. you have people here wondering obviously can any of our lawmakers, even bill clinton, do something to try to clarify if this truly was a misunderstanding? >> reporter: well, you know, whether it was a misunderstanding or not, what they knew and what they didn't know, that's really part of the investigation and that is a matter of haitian law because what they did happened here in
11:14 am
haiti. that's what the ambassador confirmed. he really didn't want to give too many details as to what's going on behind the scenes, although he did say there were talks between u.s. consular officials and the haitian government as to whether there is a possibility of this being taken to the u.s. that's something that's been talked about. it's something haitian officials were asked about. right now that's up in the air. we've been trying to get in touch with the embassy as to whether or not they might be able to get some care if they are in need of medical care if that is the case. they did get back to me and said they are looking into it and have been providing care to these americans, tamron. >> all right, michelle kosinski on the ground, still there covering the story, thank you very much, michelle. and former president bill clinton, who is a special envoy to haiti, is returning to the country today. now his trip will be the second since the earthquake hit january is 12th. the mission for this visit, the former president will meet with haitian leaders and deliver more

supplies. clinton and former president george w. bush were recruited by president obama to lead private fund-raising efforts for haiti. and those tea party activists who swept the country with those loud rallies and mass protests over president obama's health care reform, among other things, are now huddled together right now mapping out their future. they are meeting in nashville, tennessee, at their inaugural convention and sarah palin will headline the meeting tomorrow night. in the meantime, here's an example of the topics that will be covered at the convention. one of them correlations between the current administration and marxist dictators of latin america. another seminar, five easy fixes to the high cost of mass immigrations. and these are conservative activists, to say the least, riled up. here is what one had to say. >> i just couldn't sit down anymore and not do anything because it reminded me of what happened during the reign of

party folks would be studying this at their national convention. what it also shows is they're not that dissimilar from the republican base, as a recent poll showed that more than 60% of republicans think that obama is a socialist. so this is not -- this is not something where they diverge much from republicans. they've claimed to be independent but if you poll them, their views are about as extreme as the republican base. >> what do we know about sarah palin's speech? we know she's getting six figures, over $100,000 to speak there. many of the tea partiers are complaining, or members of the tea party, are complaining. i think the tickets were 600 bucks so it's not affordable for a lot of these grassroots folks who are struggling to pay bills. she is there making a lot of money. what is she going to say to rally these folks up? >> it's absurd. it makes the tea party movement look like it's some sort of a front group to funnel its members money to sarah palin.
11:18 am
this $100,000 to speak to a movement? what kind of a leader of a movement demands $100,000? just for the privilege of the members to see her speak. >> she says she's donating that, right, ryan? >> who knows? her last expense report showed that money that people had given her for her campaign, she wound up turning around and spending on her own book. so maybe she gave some of those books away to charity and that counts as a charitable gift, i don't know. why charge your own people $100,000 if you're just going to then turn around and give it to a charity? she's got millions of dollars anyway. it seems like a slap in the face. >> it will be interesting to see what she says. we've seen the huge crowds of members of this party, tea party, in d.c. but so far the reports are only about 900, 600 folks have shown up for this convention so far. are they losing steam and we'll
