massive terror bust. it could be one of the biggest we've seen in recent memory. plus, what happened to debates about democracy? when did we take a turn toward nasty and violent? you saw those protests on capitol hill where tea partyiers reportedly shouted racial epithets at black members of congress. others held up signs showing guns. now some democratic lawmakers have seen offices attacked. they say they're getting death threats against them and their families. did sarah palin start this during the campaign when she accused obama of palling around with terrorists. palin told her followers to reload. her facebook page shows this map of 20 congressional democratic districts identified by rival targeting cross-hairs. this is the woman who may get her own reality show? the hunt is on for a fugitive in florida. as you'll see, the chase for this suspect means no monkeying around. let's kick off this hour with republicans mounting their
12:01 pm
last stand against health care. with the rallying cry, repeal and replace. right now the senate's debate continues on the companion bill to the new health care law signed by president obama a little more than 24 hours ago. we're now into the 11th hour of the 20 hours required under reconciliation rules. republicans plan to offer dozens of amendments in an attempt to gum up the process and embarrass democrats. both sides have been going at it ahead of the vote. >> you can put lipstick on a pig, mr. president, but this is still a pig. >> this is not a fight between republicans and democrats, but a fight between democrats and a majority of americans who do not want this bill. >> you heard the old saying, men are from mars, women are from venus? i think that party is from mars and we're from planet earth. i think they've been out in our orbit. the planet earth that i'm on tells me to pass health insurance. >> nbc's luke russert is on capitol hill.
12:02 pm
some of the amendments, these republicans are offering, they're already planning, right, luke, to use the vote against them or for them in terms of campaign ads later this year? >> reporter: right, contessa. what republicans are trying to do is to make one of these amendments a very tough vote for democrats so that in the event that it gets passed, it would send this reconciliation bill back, this fix-it bill back to the house under the reconciliation process. remember, if one thing changes under reconciliation, it has to go back to the house. the house has to approve it before it comes law. it strings out the process. also they want to force democrats to make a tough vote that could possibly come back and get them in november. understand when this votorama occurs there will literally be one minute in between votes. one democratic senator told me, luke, we don't know exactly what we're voting on because it will be coming at us so quickly. he went on to say this is really where the american people get so confused by what's going on in washington, voting on things we have no idea about, but ultimately come back to get us
12:03 pm
in november. go ahead. >> harry reid tells his members, the democrats, listen, don't vote for these amendments. because we don't want them to pass. then it has to go back to the house. but when you have an amendment like -- i propose making this that you can't have erectile dysfunction drugs for sex offenders. imagine a democrat doesn't vote for that. imagine the campaign ad that comes this fall that says he voted to give erectile dysfunction drugs to sex offe offende offenders. >> reporter: hence you see it's an interesting strategy the gop mustered up. also senator mccain has an interesting amendment that says any of the sweetheart deals in the fix-it deal including money for louisiana, money for asbestos victims in montana, a hospital that chris dodd helped to get built, that would be gone. there are going to be some poison pills in these amendments. it's going to be very interesting to see if democrats will vote no throughout the entire process. that being said, steny hoyer,
12:04 pm
house majority leader, is keeping the house around before the recess in the event it does go back to the house they will pass the final fix-it bill before the easter passover recess, contessa. >> there's going to be a lot of democrats hoping the american voters pay close enough attention to realize what's happening here. >> reporter: absolutely. we're wamping big breaking news overseas. 100 suspects busted in a terror plot in saudi arabia. today the saudi interior minister accused militants of plotting attacks on key oil and security installations in the eastern part of that country. 47 saudis, 51 yemenis, 1 somali and a monogol yan native were arrested. all of them believed to be linked to al qaeda. part of one network and two different terror cells and all three operating separately. nbc terrorism analyst roger kressy joins me now. how big a problem is this that you have outside al qaeda elements influencing terror attacks within these middle eastern countries? >> contessa, it demonstrates the
12:05 pm
continued strength of al qaeda in the arabian peninsula. i think what we'll discover is the same organization that tried to destroy flight 253 over detroit on christmas day was also behind this multipronged plot. the saudi interior ministry has talked about three potential cells, two of which were going to attack the oil rich eastern province. looking to attack the critical infrastructure of saudi arabia. i think what it also points to is the central role that leadership of al qaeda in the arabian peninsula and yemen have. it's important to keep in mind the saudis have been dealing with this problem for years now. every year or so they will roll up dozens, if not hundreds of individuals either suspected or in the final stages of operational plans. it speaks to the depth of the problem saudis are dealing with. >> is this in some ways al qaeda cutting off its nose to spite its face? on one hand maybe they're trying to make a point in saudi arabia. if you're forcing saudis' hands
12:06 pm
into taking action against -- i mean, 100 people arrested now, it just doesn't seem like a smart tactical move on the part of al qaeda. >> the saudis have been serious about this since about the 2003 time frame when al qaeda launched a series of very devastating attacks inside saudi arabia, killing dozens of innocents. at that point the saudi government finally recognized the problem they had inside their own country. the cancer that they had to deal with. what al qaeda often does is they will go after significant targets and recognizing that in doing so, sometimes it allows the interior security service to then go after the presence in that respective country. they believe that's a chance worth taking. i think a lot of people will look at what al qaeda has done in saudi arabia has a strategic mistake over the long run. the saudi security services have gotten extremely good at rolling up these type of cells. this is the latest example o how successful they've been. >> thank you for wrapping that up for us.

relatives of a seaworld trainer killed by a whale say they'll suffer severe harm if video of her final moments is ever made public. trainer dawn brancheau seen here just moments before her death last month was dragged under water by a killer whale during a live performance. at a hearing today in orlando, the family's attorney said the family's right to privacy outweighs the public's right to view the video captured by a seaworld camera. a news organization did not object to the extension of the injunction so all sides could reach a solution. brancheau's mother, father and brother attended today's hearing. the two men accused of burning five new jersey teenagers to death in 1978 say they are not guilty. 53-year-old hampton and 56-year-old lee evans made their first court appearance in newark this morning. until yesterday nobody knew what happened to those five boys when they disappeared. it was one of the state's longest running missing persons

12:09 pm
targeting resources, job creation resources, training, workforce training into areas of high unemployment where the chronically unemployed live. that's a big piece of what the congressional black caucus has been doing for many, many years. now, thank goodness, we have a president obama who understands it and we're working for -- we're moving forward to try to develop specific strategies. it's tough, though. let me just tell you. we've been working basically, first of all, to try to develop a summer youth jobs initiative. a jobs program for our young people, which is one of the urban league's recommendations. well, we have many young people now who have to pay the rent and buy the food because their parents are unemployed. today we're working on a $600 million package which will create from 300,000 to 500,000 jobs. we need three times more in terms of summer youth jobs programs. so when you look at what we have to do, we have to develop the political will to invest in people, to invest in direct job
12:10 pm
creation. we've invested over $50 billion in helping iraq reconstruct. the urban league is proposing $168 billion. why can't we at least put $100 billion in a massive jobs creation effort? that's going to help us reduce the deficit and it's going to help create jobs. >> it's interesting, because reverend jesse jackson was pointing out to me earlier this week that the big cities across this nation are getting squeezed so badly for transit money. the mta in new york is cutting, just slashing bus routes, laying off transit workers. and the reverend pointed out, look, those are green jobs. and those are green jobs that african-americans use to reach middle class. when they get slashed, you're cutting green jobs and you're cutting jobs for urban workers. it's a real problem. that being said -- go ahead. >> it's also the life blood of many of our communities. senior citizens need buses to be able to go to their doctors'
12:11 pm
appointments, grocery stores. in my district, we have a phenomenal bus system that helps our senior citizens get to the county hospitals. when that is cut, you really are dealing with the lifeline in our communities. >> does it need to be a black agenda? >> it's not a black agenda. we're talking about an agenda that's going to make america stronger. we're talking about developing foo tomorrow eformula and resources directed to chronically unemployed. wherever they're chronically unemployed we need to focus our efforts. i don't accept the fact there are those saying this is a black agenda. this is an agenda that's an american agenda. it's an agenda that's going to make our country stronger. we are americans. people of color are americans. they deserve equal treatment in any laws and any funding we present. >> congresswoman, before i let you go, can i just ask you your reaction to some of the -- happened -- >> well, it's a shame and a
12:12 pm
disgrace. i tell you one thing. it just demonstrates what the congressional black caucus has been saying all along. that is we cannot sweep the issues of race and racism under the rug. we have to surface these issues. we have to have a healthy dialogue on race. only then can we move toward reconciliation. and i think what happened this weekend was just an abomination. it was an example of what the unfinished business is of america that we must, as a country, move forward to complete. >> congresswoman barbara lee, it's good to talk to you as always. thank you, ma'am. an avalanche warning now in effect for the entire front range of the rocky mountains. heavy wet snow creates dangerous conditions in jefferson county. it's near denver. they have had 16 inches of snow since the storm started yesterday. air travel is limited. crews are trying to keep the denver international airport at least partially operating. the snow is expected to taper off later today. sarah palin has announced her 2010 target list as she moves one step closer to her own

market alert here. we got some pretty discouraging news today on the housing front. sales of brand-new homes fell for a fourth straight month to a record low last month.
12:17 pm
they dropped 2.2%. experts are blaming the bad economy and stormy weather throughout the nation. yesterday the report was that existing home sales fell for a third straight month, which means lots of houses on the market right now. though a glimmer of good news, prices on new homes rose more than 5% since last february. let's take a look at the markets right now. you're seeing those red arrows across the board. dow jones is dipping. portugal had bad news about its credit rating been downgraded because of debt. good news for investors. orders for durable goods rose. so a mixed bag. in our search for stories far and wide, we found a real life rainman. a teenager with autism from glenview, illinois, has pulled off a nearly impossible feat. correctly predicting every winner in the first two rounds of the ncaa basketball tournament. the odds of that happening? even picking big upsets like northern iowa over kansas. cornell over wisconsin.

new plan aimed at placing students in schools closer to their homes. the district's policy started in '99 and used socioeconomic factors to place students rather than race. it's been a contentious fight over politics, too. the tea party activists have become active players. and in all likelihood could influence the mid-term elections. take a look at a brand-new quinnipiac university poll out just this morning. in a hypothetical congressional race a generic republican candidate has the edge over a generic democrat 44% to 39%. trouble brews for republicans when the tea party is factored in. the democratic candidate would get 36%. the republican would get 25%. 15% for the tea party. brendan steinhaweser is the grass roots director of freedom works, committed to lower taxes, smaller government and dick army cochairs that organization. brendan, when we're talking about what happens this fall, are you more likely because of poll numbers like those to
12:20 pm
encourage and support republican candidates than to fight your own tea party candidate? >> i do think that the beginning of the tea party movement essentially was a rejection of big government in both parties. and as the movement took to the streets, it was protesting policies. but as it began to look at the elections, i think this movement is very sophisticated. i think the vast majority of tea party activists will go to the most fiscally conservative candidate that can win. we are going to have a problem with candidates like charlie crist in florida or dee dee skoez fa va in upstate new york. those types of candidates won't be getting our support in the elections in the fall. >> is it likely any democrats get your support? >> i think right now you're already seeing a lot of people in the tea party movement thanking the democrats that voted against the obama care bill. they've thanked the people that voted against cap and trade. i think they've thanked the people that voted against the stimulus. so the potential for supporting democrats in competitive districts, democrats who've
