in the new york times that the democrats are bushing an -- >> well, look, the times did get into something. there is a disagreement inside the democratic circles about nationalizing, going after the tea party. there's some folks that say, you know what, you can go to the businessman republicans and say, you know what? you may not be happy with what president obama, but these folks are going to be even tougher to deal with, harder to deal with, and you won't have a friend at all. that's one motivation of making the tea party the face of the republican party. >> getting enthusiasm on the part of -- >> right. but the second part goes to why the president is in pennsylvania. they are like, look, we've got a way to stop the republicans from winning the senate. it's a race by race strategy. we can use the president in various places. philadelphia is one of them. go out to california, go out to washington. so do you go micro, macro? and the risk of the macro is

that you elevate the tea party and actually make it harder to localize the races, which is what the national folks are talking. >> but the flip side is that it's already a national election. >> absolutely. and that's the things that they can not get in the way of conservative republicans spent the weekend ramping up the rhetoric. it was interesting stuff. but also doing with conservative victories. let's start with christine o'donnell and this talk about witchcraft. is she a witchy woman? >> christine o'donnell was hit on two fronts. she admitted that she dabbed in witchcraft. it came from a video clip that bill maher. >> because i dab belled into witchcraft. i hung around people doing these

things. i'm not making this stuff up. i know what they told me they do. >> the other attack on o'donnell, actually came in the form of a tv ad by the sen tore yell campaign committee which wasn't hitting her on witchcraft but on failure to pay her taxes and failure to pay past campaign staffers. take a listen at that ad. >> we don't know a lot about christine o'donnell. but here's what we do know. she'll fit right in in washington. o'donnell spent money she doesn't have, hired employees she didn't pay. stiffed businesses, didn't pay her taxes. >> so as you can see, o'donnell is having to deal with these two different stories and certainly a lot of attention on her campaign. it will be interesting to see how she deals with these two different hits. >> all right. let's go four time zones away to anchorage alaska. lisa, friday night, calls her republican opponent an extremist and has continued on that talk

with joe miller and announces a riding campaign. what do we know about it? >> chuck, it certainly complicates a little bit of the math for the republicans now. now we have the republican nominee joe miller. we have lisa mounting her right-np bid and then a democrat, scott mcadams. lisa murkowski, this writing bid could be seen as a revenge of the moderates or the middle of the republican party strikes back. and certainly republicans didn't want to see this happen. alaska is still a republican-leaning state. but this is no longer the shoe-in that it was once seen once miller won that republican primary. >> all right. mark murray, deputy political director, we're going to play more from the value voter's summit later. thanks. >> the only u.s. senator to win via write-in is the infamous strom thurm man.

so what she's attempting to do would be historic if she pulled it off. all right. world leaders are in new york for the united nations general assembly. true to form, iranian president, ahmadinejad, is lashing out at the united states on the eve of his big speech. also in new york to cover this is ali. i've got to ask you, is this going to be one of the classic ahmadinejad goes off on america for 45 minutes, an hour, and folks in there have to sit there and roll their eyes while he does it? >> chuck, it would certainly follow the pattern. he doesn't seem to mind to be the villain here. he likes to play against america and saying that iran has always been mistreated against america. it would certainly fit the pattern. i think he wants to come here as well and show that he's been very compassionate by releasing

sarah shourd. just before he left iran on friday, he made a big statement saying, it's now america's time to release iranian prisoners in u.s. prisoners. but these are prisoners that have been violated of selling military equipment to iran. i don't think he's going to get very far with his request but it does leave the faith of josh and shane bauer heaanging in the balance. >> sarah shourd is back in the u.s. and gave an interview? >> yes, a statement. very carefully guarded statement. she didn't release any of the details regarding her time in prison to allow her colleagues to go free. but she didn't give any details which would obviously help jeopardize the future of her

partners that there are there. it's a very guarded statements and they have said in the next two three months they will probably have to face charges on he is spee john naj. >> all right. we'll see you there in a couple of days, ali. thank you. >> thank you. the white house is keeping a close eye on afghanistan as they go through allegations of widespread fraud. it's an election critical to u.s. plans for starting to pull out next year. john yang joins us live from kabul. good afternoon to you. what's the view of these elections? was the fraud as rampant as it was in the presidential election? >> well, i tell you, the complaints are coming in faster than the returns. the returns are not going to happen for a couple of days but already independent observers are complaining about some 300 cases of voter indtimidation,

phony ballot papers, polling place where is materials never showed up. as you said, this is really crucial to the president's plans to stabilize afghanistan and hopefully begin withdrawing troops next summer. there was already doubt about the afghan's ability to run the presidential election marked with massive fraud and another tainted election would be a big blow and across the country there was remarkable reports in one polling place in the rural areas, a man showed up with 1600 phony voter registration cards and tried to vote them all by proxy. not even in chicago, chuck and savannah. >> well, i'll tell you, john, it's good to have a chicago guy out there, actually, to be monitoring these elections. john yang in kabul, where we

millions and let me start with where you guys are looking at literally you guys and a state and top five senate race for union heavy that are union heavy and 23% of the population is unionized. washington state is next. illinois, connecticut, how much does having a big membership -- are you guys going to spend a lot of money and resources in alaska senate? >> absolutely. we're trying to elect economic patriots. that's what we're trying to do this year. an economic patriot is someone that is going to help us get job

security and willing to fight for us. >> lease is murkowski? >> she's sort of a fringe patriot, i would say. she tried on the side but really hasn't -- she's moved more and more to the left. >> you will not support her? >> we will be supporting scott mcadams. >> talking about this so-called enthusiasm gap, you're not one that disputes that the democrats are less energized than republicans, or are you? >> well, we had to overcome the gap. the momentum is starting to pick up. we go out and talk to our members at the work site, at their homes, phoned them, we door knocked and gave them the facts to make the decisions that are in their best interest. >> what is your message? are you saying if it it's worth it to come out and vote. >> we need people to help us create jobs. what's the republican's message to help us create jobs.

they don't have a message to create jobs. the president has done a lot of things. he inherited an economic mess and brought it back from the brink of disaster. we have a health care system that is a base for reform. and we brought in wall street. so here's a chance that workers have to go back to where we were in the '90s, 2000, whenever wall street ran wild and controlled the agenda or continue to go forward building an economy that is going to create jobs and help recreate the middle class. >> are you concerned about a disconnect on a couple of issues between the white house and some of the democrats running for house? for instance, i've seen a lot of incumbents saying that they are supporting -- saying that we're not going to sign off on the free trade agreements.

the president is indicating and the white house has indicated that they want to get more of these trade deals approved at a faster clip. is there going to be a problem with the flcio and the white house? >> there could be. probably not. this president has actually enforced the raws. if you look at what they did with domestic laws, china was cheating. they imposed a tariff. domestic production has gone up 15% in that period of time. hundreds of thousands of jobs have been created because he's enforcing the laws. so he's doing something. >> the korea free trade agreement, are you guys for it or not? >> the bush free trade agreement is no. because it doesn't remove any of the nontariff barriers that allow our products to -- >> it's not going to sign that free trade agreement. >> there was a piece in the new

york times saying that the democrats were considering nationalizing and having an anti tea party campaign. the white house tells us, that's not true. we're not going to do it. should they? >> i think this ought to be race by race. we can show race by race why we have the best candidate. we support people that support working people. it's not going to be a national campaign. it's going to be a race by race, as far as we're concerned. if you look at all of our literature, we send out 2.5 million pieces of literature. it's race by race. this candidates supports this, this candidate doesn't. the two parties, the way that the two candidates stand and then it's a choice for our members and me. casey is a big wall streeter and cut jobs. he cost the state millions of jobs. >> so you're not ready to pull

out or divert resources -- >> divert? we're going to win that race. it's going to be a fine center race. >> all right. thank you. president of afl-cio. up next, the 2010 candidates face off in their first debate in florida. guess which one called another a loser? >> plus, sarah palin goes to iowa. she wants people to think she's going to run? first, washington speak for the standard procedure or method that is closely often mindlessly followed. obviously not a positive way to describe either side of the party. but i'm ouls in lock-step with savannah. >> we are. we are in sync. ... and if you go with us, it'll be a win-win.

getting ever so close to being down to even before the midterm, about six weeks ago, and too many debates this weekend in the battle for the senate. first in florida where charlie crist forced off the republican ticket is now running on his independence from the two parties and the first debate in the race, chris had an uncomfortable experience of being called out directly on the diet. rubio said that he supports making english the official language of the united states. speaking of independence, appointed colorado senator michael bennett tried to show that he's his own guy. he is trying to hold his seat against a challenge from republican ken buck.

listen. >> it's true. it's actually true. you voted 24 times in favor of higher taxes. either against tax cuts or in favor of taxes. >> where i agree with the president, i agree with the president. where i disagree with him, i disagree with him. >> don't be fooled, folks, by this grassroots argument. because as far as i am aware, and i can be corrected, every single ad run on behalf of ken buck, attacking jane, during the republican primary, was paid for by out dltz side groups that had an agenda that is to the extreme of the republican party. >> everybody sees what you are doing.

everybody gets it. you want me to change parties and do this independent thing when you couldn't run the republican primary and now you wake up every day to say, what can i do to take away more votes from congressman meek. >> when speaker rubio said he was against it, didn't think it was right, what my friend, the speaker, just accused me of, he did on this law. >> fascinating there. so you had michael bennett talking great things about jane norton, and then marco rubio saying nice things about meek. this is strange bedfellows by the way. moving on, sarah palin may have placed give in the straw poll. she had a different audience on social conservatives. reagan dinner key note was her speaker and she started off with a joke of will she or will she

on the hour now, let's take a look at what is driving monday. >> president obama is going to head to pennsylvania to support joe sestak. it's the first public outing. parts of new finland, canada, are being pounded by winds. the fda is holding a meeting

right now on whether to allow the sale of genetically-engineered salmon. the door could be opened for a variety of other genetically-engineered food. evacuation orders for 1400 homes as a fast-moving wildfire burns just outside of salt lake city. that blaze was sparked yesterday at a firing range. 50 mile-an-hour winds quickly pushed the flames towards homes. residents are being asked not to use cell phones in order to keep lines opened for emergency communication. and the bp oil well is now permanently dead. that final cement plug was sealed this weekend in the gulf. >> you know, hey, one of the great culture discussions over the next 20 years is going to be this idea of genetically engineering lots of things. it starts with food. it's going to be an interesting slippery slope argument that people are going to be talking about for years to come. all right. call it the ultimate

defriending. allegations that facebook founder stole the idea for the website is getting new attention today as hollywood takes on the drama and it's about to hit theaters. >> we have the latest on this. mara, i guess it will be a high drama in the theaters but as for the truth of the allegations here, what is the founder of facebook saying? >> well, here's kind of the back story to this moving. it's called "the social network." and it depicts allegedly what took place when it was founded and it's based partly on the lawsuit that his former classmates filed against him. identical twins went to school to harvard university with zucker berg and that they hired him to work on their social network. he didn't do the work, strung them along, and then founded facebook which they are saying was their idea.

in 2008 they settled for a reported $65 million but now the twins are saying the settlement was not worth anywhere near that. so now they want to vacate that settlement and presumably open the door to forbes estimates that he's worth about $4 billion. it's the most popular social networking site. an estimated every 14 people have a facebook account. here's what the twins say about zuckerberg and their allegations. >> a guy that was a team partner with us and did not want to play as a team member and took an idea and has run with it. >> now, for their part, facebook has issued a statement saying, we've considered the lawsuit closed for years and wish them well in their future endeavors. so facebook considering this

closed. the biggest irony is that the winklevoss twins have facebook profiles. facebook has gotten a lot of bad press recently but it's not keeping people away from it. even their biggest foes still have profiles. >> when the movie comes out, i'm even sure it will be more fascinating. thank you very much. whenever there's a big invention, there always seems to be like a second offender that pops up, i was in the room, too, feel as little slighted. >> they only say that when the invention is successful. nobody ever tried to do that with things that go nowhere. >> right. well, if men are from mars and women from venus -- >> for the first time in history, there are more women in the workforce than men, more women earned ph.d.s.

>> but men still lead women in alcoholism, homelessness, and u suicides. dan, perhaps there's no better person than to tell us why women are more superior than men than you. what is up with that? >> i just passed an article once that was talking about women better than men. i didn't believe some of the studies. i looked further and found study after study and study that these particularly male areas where women finally got the chance to take on men head to head and they were winning. now, this newsweek article surprisingly called man-up two weeks after my book called man down is -- comes out. what they are really saying is that men need to step it up. they are saying that men need to pursue more sort of typically female-oriented jobs. they need to take on a greater

role in parenting, et cetera. and that may be part of it. but, again, what i'm finding is that even when that does happen, that very often the women are doing a better job. that they tend to be -- the studies show -- this is not my musing. this is me looking at research and studies that show that again and again that the women are more consciencous, make fewer errors, they are more thoughtful. >> amen, brother. amen. >> look, it's the studies. and that's what my book is going to show. it's going to show that this is what the research has shown. >> but, dan, this is such a softball question. what did you find? why are women so super, dan in why are women doing so much better? >> i think it depends on what job you're talking about. men are still better, for example, at reading maps, and at

all sports. but across the board in this new world that we live in, the sort of qualities that make women women are also qualities that make women great. and, again, this goes to, for example, when it comes to doctors or police officers, they are lesser ror prone. >> when it comes to investors or hedge fund managers, they are not winging it. they are actually basing it on real research. >> it's the risk issue. >> yeah. >> and you know what? and i'll show that they are better gamblers as well. >> because they are not gambling. >> they are. but they are not gambling as much. >> there's gambling and there's betting on the odds. any way -- >> maybe it comes down to preparation. women who feel like they have a deficit, they have to make up for it because people -- >> people are raised that way.

you tell your kids you're going to have to work a little bit extra hard. i do that already. i see that myself with my own daughter. you say, you're going to have to work a little bit extra hard to make sure that you're taken seriously. >> and that may be why women are navigating this economy better than men. people who have more than one job, now the 3.7 million americans who have more than one job, more than half of them are women. when you look at sort of typically female jobs, like teaching, a business that is simply growing, you have a tiny percentage of men in this field. there's going to have to be a fundamental change out there. because, again, any time -- not every time but just about every time women are getting an opportunity to go head to head against men, they are winning. >> it's going to be an interesting book. it's called tentatively, man down, proof beyond a reasonable doubt that women are better. >> what goes up always comes down. so about two years from now

you'll have a sequel, right, chuck? >> not everything is politics. >> wrong. it is. >> dan, appreciate it. we'll do our trivia. what democratic leader first won his senate seat in part, because his offend nent claimed to be yasser arafat best friend in congress? >> the answer is senator dick daughter bin. we'll be getting questions like that, about associations, over the next six weeks. coming up, what is the association of the republicans? it depends on who you ask. the latest twist for republicans, of course, has to do with christine o'donnell stirring the pot with those comments about witchcraft. >> we get it. stirring the pot. i get it. but, first, the white house soup of the day, why have one bean when you can have 15? >> legume.

convention and here are some of the highlights. >> on the one front, we have a secular socialist machine led by obama, pelosi, and reid and islamists. >> unfortunately, we have an administration whose idea of a rogue state is arizona. >> a recession is when your neighbor loses his job. a depression is when you lose your job. and a recovery is when nancy pelosi loses her job. >> the cause of the violence is an islamic culture that keeps hundreds of millions of people right on the edge of murder and mayhem 24 hours a day. >> until we get rid of barry or

barack. i haven't seen his birth certificate. i may get bullets shot at me. but we've got a guy that hates america. i'm just going to go ahead and say it. >> here with us now, john sununu. first, on politics, but also elizabeth warren because you served with her on the oversight commission. the wing of the party, there's a three-legged tool in republican politics. your economic conservatives, social conservatives, and national security. is there going to be a way that somebody can unite the three? right now it doesn't look like it feels as if somebody can successfully navigate this these days. >> in this election, it's an off-year cycle. having one person unifying the party, frankly, isn't that important. what's important is that there are a number of messages that resonate the top of the list, your polls show economy and jobs and taxes and a big concern about the expansion of the size

of government. and in that environment, the social issues, immigration, pro life issues that we talked about at this value voters summit, they are not going to drive elections. >> they are not going to drive the cycle. >> there are going to be some voters that are concerned about those issues. so you want to speak to all elements of a party, all elements of your constituency, whether you're republicans, democrats, or independents. and i think that is what this is about. >> the conservative wing of the republican party has all of the momentum going into the mi midterms. is there a moderates need not apply? they are getting some short-term benefits but potentially long-term problems? >> i don't think so. first of all, you've got a lot of different members of the republican party, either on the ballot or currently represented. olympia snow, mark kirk running for senate in illinois. and then you have more conservative candidates, tea

party driven candidates that have upset the base of the party. alaska with lisa murkowski losing her primary is an example. and if you look across the board at all of these races, house races and senate races, you see moderate and liberal republicans running well in the general election and you see more conservative candidates. >> should the party welcome back lisa murkowski and give her the leadership position if she wins. >> that's their choice. if sherp to get re-elected into the senate, she would. she's very level-headed. she's obviously thought this through. it's difficult to tell someone what's the right thing for to you to do because if you believe you're the best choice, if you believe you have something to offer your constituents, it comes from the heart. you should put your name on the

ballot, put your name out there. buat the same time, republicans not just here in washington but in alaska, has a responsibility and an obligation to support the primary process. >> do you think the republican establishment or elected republicans are in some way running scared of the tea party elements? there's no effort to the wackier things elements. >> particularly when newt gingrich has been doing of late, really wild stuff. >> why is nobody the voice of reason within the republican party -- >> i'm the voice of reason. a voice of reason. look, there are lots of, i think, thoughtful, level-headed people who are trying to recognize that you succeed when you broaden the base and open that tent door up as wide as possible. again, i talked about some more moderate republicans that aren't just serving today but are on the ballot. there are going to be people out there during the primary process

who maybe they're looking out for themselves by endorsing candidates, by criticizing candidates. >> right. >> it gets them on the news, it gets them a sound bite, maybe thinking about 2012 before really thinking about 2010. you're always going to have that happening, whether it's newt gingrich or jim demint or anyone else. >> you served with elizabeth warren on the t.a.r.p. oversight commission. should republicans and democrats fear elizabeth warren starting up this consumer agency? is she really going to be bad for consumers? >> there are two sets of concerns here. first of all, on the process side, the president kind of made up a title in order to avoid making a recess appointment. many think he's abused that process. so now he's made up a title that's not senate confirmable, and there are going to be most every republican and many democrats that simply aren't happy this was done. on the substannive size,
