show" with ed schultz. good evening, americans, and welcome to "the ed show." tonight from new york, these stories are hitting my hot buttons at this hour. well, hell, conservatives, they're attacking the speech i gave at the nation rally over the weekend. i'll show you my speech in its entirety, and let you be the judge. plus, reverend al sharpton reacts to this weekend's extraordinary event, and tells us what we need do between now and november 2nd. this one really has my interest because these are the kind of people who went over to the beck's rally. senator demint over on south carolina his lesson on hate and discrimination is now officially in session. you see, he's doubling down on his claim that gays, lesbian, unmarried pregnant women should be banned from teaching in public schools in america. we've got a lesson forum tonight on "the ed show."

and a bombshell in the desert. a tea partier is threatening to sink sharron angle's campaign. now, she's been caught on tape trying to get him off the ballot and slamming republican leaders in washington. okay. but this is a story that has me fired up tonight. and, really, it's something that i'm going to remember for the rest of my life. ask yourself the question, what do you think it would be like to stand on the lincoln memorial and give a speech off of the top of your head? i don't know if you can prepare for that. i did my best. i had the honor of kicking off the one nation rally on the steps of the lincoln memorial on saturday. the passion in the crowd was unbelievable amongst the great americans who traveled all across this country to fight for a better life for all of us and to try to right what has been wrong over the past few years as the party of no has tried to stop the progressive agend. forces of evil in the conservative movement are on a mission. to take down the rally and marginalize the diverse crowd that attended.

conservatives want you to believe that -- well, first of all, nobody showed up and they're absolutely dead wrong about that. this sunday the "washington post" reported that more than 400 groups endorsed the nation working together rally, which organizers said drew a crowd of 175,000 people. about what they expected. now, conservatives want you to believe that glenn beck's phony religion revival was way bigger than the one nation rally. well, let me take you back to the day of the beck rally on august 28th, 2010, at 6:32 p.m., cbs.com proved beck's crowd was, as i said, no big shakes. an estimated 87,000 people attended the rally, organized by radio talk show host and fox news commentator glenn beck saturday in washington, according to a crowd estimate commissioned by cbs news. the company airphotoslive.com based the attendance on aerial

photos it took over the rally. now to be fair, nbc news put the size of beck's crowd at 300,000 people. so, somewhere in between all of this, 87,000, give or take 9 grand by that company, and 300,000 is reported by nbc. pretty much, would you say that the size of the crowd is pretty much the same? i would. i was there. the people i saw, it was packed. so conservatives, i want you to pay very close attention. this is what a crowd of middle-class americans who believe in universal health care, jobs, unemployment benefits, not kicking your neighbor to the side of the road, and of course equal rights, social justice, and education for america. this is the official picture from the a.p. from our rally on saturday. packed house all the way back to the monument. and i refuse to allow the forces of evil distract from what the one nation rally was all about. they want you to believe that i gave some controversial speech. that i had -- you know was hiding something.

well, here's my speech. in its entirety for the record. >> hello, america! one nation, one nation! we are together. this march is about the power to the people! it is about the people standing up to the corporations! are you ready to fight back? are you ready to stand up with your brother and sister? this is a defining moment in america. are you american? you are american? do you love america? it is time it is a defining moment for this country, for us

to look into our heart and our soul to really find out who we are as a people, as a country, as a family. the conservative voices of america, they're holding you down. they don't believe in your freedom. they want the concentration of wealth. they've shipped your job overseas. to our brothers and sisters who have fallen on hard times in this economic world, we stand with you today as one nation. to our brothers and sisters who have seen their jobs go overseas, we will not there the happen. we will fight back as one nation. to our brothers and sisters who they've been discriminating against. this is no time to back down.

this is a time to fight for america. you love this country. we've died here in country. we will sacrifice for this country, but that sacrifice cannot profit those at the top all the time. this is about the people. this is about one nation. this is about our future. this is about our kids, our grandkids, the future of our country. we cannot back down. we will not back down. we must move forward. are you one nation? are you one nation? are you one nation? >> for the last two years, president obama, he's had the problem with the word "no." 40 people, 40 people in the

united states senate has held down the working man of america. 40 republicans have decided to say no, while you suffer, while your jobs go overseas, while they strangle the money. they don't want to give it to the small businesses. they want to keep it at the top. they want to see president obama fail. we cannot let that happen. we cannot let it happen. the lord is pushing this march with a great turnout on a beautiful day. i leave you all a message, we cannot give up on november 2nd. we have not gotten everything we've wanted in the first two years.

but we have to stand behind our leaders on the president's agenda. that it's for the people, and not always the corporations. it is for the family of america. the other side, they think it's about profit. they don't think it's about people. they don't want us to have health care. they want it for a profit. we will get universal health care some day in this country. we will create jobs. we will get the money to the small businesses. we will not let them ruin public education. if we let them do this to public education, we will be a different country. just remember, the great thing about public education is when the doors open, everyone's

welcome. the gifted, the challenged, the rich, the poor, those who need special help, those people who have fallen in past -- these are not just about a few people. this is all about all of the people for public education for the opportunity in america. we cannot let them tear it down. we must fight. we must push back. our brothers and sisters, our union brothers and sisters across america. they have vilified you. they don't want you organized in the workplace. they suppress your vote. they delay new organization of collective bargaining. we will not stand by silent. we, as one nation, we as one

nation, must stand together, must fight the forces of evil, the conservatives in this country across the board. want it for them. they don't want it for the people. they talk about the constitution, but they don't want to live by it. they talk about our forefathers but they want discrimination. they want to change this country and we, as one nation, stand up this day and say, we will be there on november 2nd. we will not give up. we will continue to fight. are you americans? are you americans? do you love this country? then we must vote on november 2nd. god bless america. god bless our troops for keeping us safe. let's move forward for the country.

noteworthy and you alluded to it, is the diversity of the crowd. you saw so many people of different races of different genders, different -- even political persuasions that were so relaxed and comfortable to be standing together for the country. and you know, it's outrageous when you're standing there saying, god bless america, and people are cheering and every speaker's saying, one nation under god, liberty and justice for all, indevisible with liberty and justice for all. how anyone can make that other than a nation rally of patriot that want to see the country continue to go in the right way. it was an exceptional day. >> the diversity was quite apparent as opposed to the rally back on august 28th. what does that mean, reverend? >> i think it means that if we're going to really unite this country and heal this country and all of us have our feelings, that we are really first going to are to start to work on agendas that show that we can come together and i think that's what saturday showed.

we can come together. we don't are to agree everything. but the principles of trying to make sure that jobs and quality education and quality health care is available for all americans. it's something that we can all unite on. those things we disagree, we can go and fight out in the particulars. but the broad strokes of what america means was affirmed on saturday p and we've been working since then. i've spent a lot of time today talking with randyweingardener from the teachers. and how we keep this kind of coming together and getting in the trenches and bring those voters out of all communities, understanding that we must come together and keep this country moving in the right direction. >> reverend sharpton, appreciate your help on saturday. you were a big part of it. the country appreciates it. and the progressive movement definitely appreciates it. and we've got to win on november 2nd to keep this moving order.

welcome back to "the ed show." and thanks for watching tonight. now, these are the kind of people that went to the big rally on august 28th. there is a difference. senator waterloo, jim demint of south carolina is, you know, really playing to the people -- the tea partying crowd hard by returning to an outrageous position that he took when he first ran for senate back in

2004. i find this absolutely appalling. at a church rally on sunday in south carolina, he said he doesn't think homosexuals should be allowed to teach in public schools, and neither should sexually active pregnant single women. six years ago he threw single pregnant women in there as well. yesterday, he also complained about no one backing him on those comments, saying, "when i said those things, no one came to my defense, but everyone would come to me and whisper that i shouldn't back down. they don't want government purging their rights and their freedom to religion." senator, you know to me it seems by banning single mothers and homosexuals from teaching school, you, you are the one purging people's rights and freedoms. this is what the tea party crowd is all about. this is their leader. this is a guy who has embraced their candidates. this is what that rally was all

about back in late august. let me bring in mike papantonio, host of the national syndicated "ring of fire" radio show. mike, what do you make of all of this? i find it absolutely outrageous that in 2010 this is what the united states senate produces. >> ed, no surprises. jim demint has always been the go-to guy for crazy talk for the republicans. when republican leadership is too embarrassed to say it themselves they have jim demint out there saying it. for example when they get in their colicky baby mode and they talk about government's too big, jim demint is the guy talking about how all of i.r.s. should be abolished and that corporations shouldn't have to pay as much tax as the average working family. if you remember demint was the guy who argue that there should be no minimum wage law in america. republican leadership, ed, is too embarrassed to say the things that jim demint will say. he was the guy that made the argument with a straight face, that when he ship job oversea that it's better for our economy. republican leadership couldn't

say that, but they could have jim demint go out forward and it it for himself. >> yeah. >> the interesting thing about jim demint is he's part of this moral card crowd. interesting story i know that you remember it. the street crowd. called the family. the family was this group jim hoff, stanback, john thune, john insign, all of these moral card guys that said that god was telling them how they should engage in politics. god was -- that they were a toofl god. i'm not making this up. if you go back and look at those stories about sea street and if you talk about the family he was one of those guys, ed. >> sure. >> unfortunately, unfortunately for the family, they had mark sanford -- stanford who was traveling all over country with his argentina honey. before he to confess that he was having an affair in las vegas. but this guy's shameless. >> well -- >> shameless.

>> -- should we as americans bear to think what it would be like if the republicans and leaders like this from the state of south carolina were to ever get a filibuster-proof senate? what kind of country would we have then? i mean, this is their position. he wants to discriminate and that's exactly what i talked about at the rally. you saw the tape just a few moments ago. they want to discriminate. they -- they openly admit they want to discriminate against americans who pay tax, who live in this country, who live by the laws. that doesn't matter. it's a moral code that the righties in this country want to rite for this country. i find it absolutely appalling. and for jim demint to come out and say, you know, they were whispering it to me. jim, give me some names, will you? who's whispering? who wants to stand up and say that they were whispering to jim demint? i think that this crowd is horribly dangerous. >> understand, what might had been whispering, is this a crowd

-- i'm not making this up. a crowd who says, publicly, that they are talking to god about how they should lead this country. now, as far as the exclusion issue when you spoke at that -- when you spoke there at the memorial and you -- you talked about the division in american. that is who is part of the club and who isn't part of the club? that crowd understood that what this -- what leadership for the republicans want is a gated community, ed. and it's not a gated community that all americans can come through. it's a gated community that's led by these elitists. i mean no other way to describe it. >> that's exactly right. >> and when you said that the crowd responded to it because they understood that in this gated community the republicans want to build most americans won't be invited through the gates. >> mike papantoneio, great to have you with us. thanks for your support. thanks for being there on saturday. i appreciate it, brother. >> thank you for being there, ed. coming up, christine o'donnell is getting just freakier by the moment. she's found a way to make religion about meatballs.

"battleground" story tonight, well, we're 29 day away from election day and i'm here to tell you tonight, folks, that the progressive base is probably a little bit more fired up than you think. the one nation rally was a massive display of unity and energy at the national mall. and it was absolutely tremendous. and the largest responses came from the crowd after the words, november 2nd. >> they want to change this country. and we, as one nation, stand up this day and say, we will be there on november 2nd. we will not give up. we will continue to fight. are you americans? are you americans?

do you love this country? then we must vote on november 2nd. >> and of course a lot of people in the democratic establishment have been critical of the base. vice president joe biden recently told liberals, stop whining. new mexico governor bill richardson said yesterday, democrats should stop complaining. >> it's important that liberals, conservatives, moderates, and the democratic party, basically, stop complaining and realize that we have a month to go. if there's one message that i want to send is that we should stop firing at each other. we've got enough people, the republicans, firing at us already. so we not -- we don't need these divisions in the party. >> i agree with the governor from new mexico but i didn't see any whining or complaining this weekend. this might be a turning point. progressives know the choice. and the question now is, will they be motivated to get out there and do something about it on november 2nd? count me in. joining me now is new mexico governor bill richardson. governor, good to have you with

us tonight. sometimes tough love is good especially coming from you, not only the white house, but now from you who's been out there in the political wars for years. what could a rally like this do for progressives out there who might be somewhat hesitant? >> well, the rally, which i understand was very successful, and i hear you were great, energizes the democratic base. the last year, the base, the traditional democratic coalition, has been a little dormant. has been critical. what rallies like this do, coupled with the president and vice president campaigning around the country, i believe very effectively getting out there in these backyard chats and these big rallies like the one in wisconsin at the university, get the base energized. i have long felt that we've spent too much time trying to appeal the republicans and independents, when our own base, our own obama coalition of young

people, minorities and independents has been a little bit -- >> yeah. >> -- hesitant. >> governor -- >> so i believe -- >> -- what would you say to young people who don't feel like, you know, we were there in '08. there's really no big shakes. not a whole lot has been done. not a lot different. what would you say to them? >> i would say that we can't go back to the republican policies of the bush years where we had huge, massive deficits. clearly, a tilt toward the wealthy and corporations. clearly, no direction in our international policy. no moral authority. america not respected internationally. that we can't go back to that. that the stakes are too high. yes, there's not perfection coming out of washington. i would also say to those young people that, that that coalition of the president's that he assembled that if you look at the president's record on

financial reform, on health care, on education reform, on restoring america's role in the world is working, is working, but we've got a long way to go. >> governor, great to have you with us tonight. thanks so much for joining us on "the ed show." >> thank you. >> for more, let's bring in katrina van huevel. editor of "the nation." katrina, nice to have you again with us tonight. on the heels of the rally what has to happen in the next 20-plus days? >> i would say what they say in texas, dance with those who bring you. what you saw in washington on saturday was a great rainbow coalition of the base. those, the rising american electorate who help elect obama. they left washington with voterless commitments to get out the vote and i think that the president needs to rouse the base with bold politics, moxie passion, and let's stop the complaints out of this white house. this is not a time for whining, as bill richardson said. it's a time for organizing, but at the same time you don't rouse the progressive majority by complaints about its ingratitude.

work to champion its causes. that's what needs to happen. >> i thought there was just a tremendous energy through the crowd on saturday. and i've never been to anything like this before. >> well, there was -- >> i've just never been -- and to be up there and to go through that crowd, i mean, if they go home and do what they can do, this is far from over for the democrats. >> no, that's what's key. people need to go out from washington, go out from washington and mobilize. and the president and his administration need to understand that they, too, have -- in these last couple years have played too much of an inside washington game. they have passed some good pieces of legislation, modest flawed in different ways but it's time to remobilize that base, that coalition which put the president in the white house. but you had some great activists there and you had this rainbow coalition which was such a beautiful departure from the wonderbread of glenn beck and fox news which shamed martin luther king's great speech by appropriating that torain. >> katrina, 7-1 is the count

when it comes to money right now in -- averaging out congressional districts across the country. what does that mean? >> it's a really dangerous crossroads' moment in our politics, ed. we've got stealth money, just metastasizing throughout our political system but you know what, we've never as democrats because we fight for economic justice as best as we can. we're never going to beat corporate republicans the right wing. we need organized people and we need to expose the corporate power that is really damaging and corroding and polluting our politics but we can do it if we go out there and fight on the ground and do it in a way, neighbor to neighbor, to explain what's at stake in this election. >> krooep vanden huevel of "nation" thanks for joining us and for your work. get rapid fire response from our panel on these stories tonight. the one nation rally this weekend showed the true face of america. people of all different age, races and backgrounds, a big difference from what i saw at

the beckster's rally on august 28th. alaska tea party nominee joe miller says the federal minimum wage is unconstitutional. and should be scrapped. and according to the latest i.r.s. data, more than 2,800 millionaires collect unemployment benefits at the height of the recession. joining us tonight joe madison xm satellite radio talk show host and ron christie republican strategist with us tonight. gentlemen, good to have you with us. joe, you were fabulous on saturday. i appreciate what you did for the one nation rally, you gave a great talk, and i was encouraged coming away from it. how do you feel? >> well, it was a neo polittant crowd. i heard somebody say that it was different than the wonderbread crowd but that ice cream where you have chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, it wasn't just a sprinkling of different colors. it was a neopolitan crowd and there's the subscribers who now must go out and tell their neighbors, their workers, their

friends that we've got to now turn out the vote. and i think that's exactly what you've got. there was nothing but positive energy there. and, ed, like you, we meet people who saw this show, who listen to our radio programs, and they came from -- i mean, washington state, california, the south, they were from florida, they were from all over, vermont. it really -- and i've been to these kinds of rallies before, but this is -- this is one of the largest. it now has to be more, though, let me say this quickly, than an event. >> yeah. >> it has to be a movement. and that means that we've got to move forward. maybe make some sacrifices in the next 30 days -- or 20 days or so, and get people to the polls. >> ron christie, give us your comparison of the two. >> well, for not having gone to the two rallies i can't really give you a line-by-line differential between the two. other than, of course, there's

some very interesting differences that we can see. for one from the estimates that i've looked at from the national park service and from the "washington post" you had several hundred thousand people come out to the glenn beck rally. this one by all accounts looking at huffingtonpost, other outlets this morning you had tens of thousands so i don't think that the enthusiasm to get as many people out there was the same for the two rallies. what i will say -- >> well the "washington post" reported 175,000. >> well, again, 175,000 against the tens of hundreds rather than the hundreds of thousands. >> well cbs news reported beck's rally had 87,000. >> yeah and i would also find that looking at statistical sampling of the cbs news poll from everything that i've read about that they dramatically undercandidate and cbs news didn't use an overhead lighter-than-air vehicles to record the number of people going out this weekend. but let me get on the real -- >> but the aerial photos which was -- the cbs news commissioned a company to go up and take the pictures. >> only for the glenn beck rally and didn't do it for this one. >> that's not have a and also say also that the pictures that

i've seen looking from the top of the monument looking back -- look, ed, you and i could get into the symantec. who had "x" and who had "y." >> you said that ours wasn't big enough. >> you asked my opinion and said that the difference from all sample it was in the tens of thousands that went to the one this weekend as opposed to hundreds of thousands but you're missing my main time. >> no, i disagree with that, ron. i will not let you get away with that. reports of 175,000 people on one month's promotion i'd say that's pretty good. >> and i've heard also that there are half a million people who were there for the glenn beck reporting. >> that was glenn beck reporting. no news agency put half a million for beck. >> i saw several in the hundreds of thousands. ed, do you want me to get to my real point. >> now, wait a minute. >> i will have to referee you two guys. >> no, i'm being fair here. i'm being fair. >> if you go back -- >> what news agency put it at half a million, ron. >> a ofox news that it was half a million. b, i saw on the "washington post" that it was hundreds of

in my playbook tonight democrats are using the threat of speaker boehner as a reason to go vote for folks on their side this november. the problem is, according to a recent nbc/"the wall street journal" poll half the country doesn't even know who the heck john boehner is, so if the democrats are really serious about fighting the tan man, shouldn't they focus on the guy trying to knock him out of his seat entirely? justin coussoule, boehner's democratic opponent in ohio's eighth district joins us tonight. mr. coussoule, good to have you with us. ask you straight-up, are you getting any help from the dnc, are you getting national money

to take out boehner. >> no, no, ed, no national money, no help from the dnc that's the short answer. >> okay, so you're a guy who is a little bit behind in the polls. how far? >> well, we haven't seen a poll here, ed in 20 years. boehner's been in office 20 years. nobody thinks that he can be beaten in this district. and we're showing him -- we're proving him wrong every day so there's no numbers to work from except the word that we hear on the street. >> and what is that word on the street. >> well, isn't a day that goes by, ed that a republican or an independent doesn't walk up to me and say they've got my support. people are tired of career inside politicians and that's what john boehner is. it cuts both ways and this guy needs to watch out. >> is he outspending you by what number? >> well, he raises million it's last i heard he's raised over $6 million but thing is he doesn't spend any of it on his own race, he's never had to so they've oversthoeld notion that he's going to be the next speaker. they don't run the campaign here. we've got a lot of room to operate under the radar.

>> the billboard that you've shown how much he's played golf, how effect civ that? >> i've heard about that billboard every day and cuts over to the heart of the matter. the guy golfs over 200 times a year. more importantly, he's out there raising money with lobbyists. that's what he's doing on the golf course. that hits home in a working class district. >> have you debated him yet and are you going to. >> we've challenged him. delivered a letter to his office in washington, d.c., we said anytime, anywhere, we'll go do d.c., the golf course in california if you're more comfortable. he ignored us. the local papers are helping us coffer up a debate, he says that he's too busy. doesn't have time to answer to his constituents back home. >> that's amazing. the dnc need to filter honey into coussoule's race to go arch boehner. the republicans have done great job taking out leadners in the past like tom daschle. a lot of national money in south dakota in that one. thune beat him. we'll have you on again, mr. coussoule. >> coussouleforcongress.com.

senate race, sharron angle's senate campaign could be undone by an angry tea party. while angle has a lot of support from tea partiers scott ash. >>an is the actual tea party candidate on the battle in nevada. he claims he could get 20% of the vote on election day so angle met with him last week and tried to convince them to drop out of race given her better chances to win. the "las vegas sun" got an audiotape of angle's plea.
