terror attacks in europe. the u.s. and england launched terror alerts and travel alerts over the weekend. but as nbc's steve handelsman reports, so far, fear isn't a factor for many americans on the move. >> reporter: dulles airport outside washington, despite more nations warning today about travel to europe, no panic among people headed there. >> it doesn't bother me. i have my suitcase. i have everything packed. i am going home. >> i'm not afraid. >> the same for americans in europe. >> but i'm not really worried here. >> reporter: but police across europe are looking for 10 kraed suspects. u.s. experts are worried. >> this is the most significant threat we have seen toward europe in the past five years. it speaks to al qaeda central still having the capability to threaten the west. >> osama bin laden back in business, said to be training europeans in pakistan. five german recruits killed by a rocket from a u.s. drone. key intelligence is coming from

an al qaeda captive in afghanistan. >> the spectrum of information suggests that we needed to put something out to warn people about the potential for attacks. >> reporter: what might be the target? tourist attractions like the vatican, big train stations in europe are well guarded. another 9/11 would be tougher to pull off than london '05, a bus and subways hit. >> if they want to cook up a bomb in their kitchen or pick up a gun and shoot someone, that's far more difficult to stop than a sophisticated airline plot. officials most fear something like the jihad attack in india. 480 people killed or wounded by ten gunmen in a three-day nightmare. i'm steve handelsman, nbc news, washington. meanwhile, in germany, a u.s. drone strike has reportedly killed five nationals. last night on the rachel madow show, rachel asked michael

isakof what we know about the germans reportedly killed in the missile strike in pakistan. >> we don't know a whole lot about the germans killed in this particular drone strike because we don't know a lot about who gets killed in any of these drone strikes. by definition, these are strikes in areas where u.s. intelligence and law enforcement, it does not center easy access nor for that matter to the pakistanis. that's why we're firing drones at them because we can't send troops there, we can't put boots on the ground there nor are the pakistanis doing it. so what we get are claims of strikes, climbs of people killed. and in this case, the pakistanis, who are very eager at this point to show how much they're cooperating with the u.s. reported today, said today that eight germans have been killed and told people that these are among the germans of pakistani decent who are believed to be connected with

could contain ashes of victims. elena kagan sat out on her first because to avoid any conflict with her work as u.s. inspector general. a georgia teen is dead after the driver of a school bus lost control and overturned, pinning the teen under the bus. several of the 11 other students on board were injured, but are said to be in good or fair condition. authorities say the 59-year-old driver was a trainee. no word yesterday on possible charges. traffic remains closed in the houston ship handle after a tugboat and its three barges hit a 300 foot tall high voltage transmission line. the electrical tower, which was turned off at the time of the accident is now leaning over, threatening to crash into the channel. no one was hurt. shipping delays could mean losses up to $1 billion. in california, the mummies of the world are on display as

welcome back to "first look." i'm lynn berry. a long time federal judge in georgia is facing drug and weapons charges after he allegedly bought cocaine, marijuana and drug killers with a stripper with whom he was having an affair. judge jack camp was released on $150,000 bond is accused of possessing two illegal guns. according to court documents, the exotic dancer in the case was also an fbi informant. the associated press reports that the oil industry has yesterday yet to react to many of the lessons learned during this summer's bp disaster. according to experts, skimmers don't have the capacity to suck up large amounts of crude and it could be a year before a

containment system is developed to stop leaks below the ocean's surface. chile's president says he now hopes the 33 miners trapped underground will be pulled out by october 15th. and brazilians elected an actual clown to congress. the 45-year-old whose stage name means grumpy ran on the campaign slogan, it can't get any worse. although he received more votes than any other candidate, he could be removed from office if reports that he is ill literate prove to be correct. now here is your first look at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opens at 10,751 after losing 78 points yesterday. the s&p fell 9 points. the nasdaq dropped 26. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo, the nikkei added 137. in hong kong, the hang seng rose 20.

more mixed economic data gave some investors a reason so sit on the sidelines monday while others cashed in on september record rally. investors mostly shrugged off a four-month-high in august for pending sales of previously owned homes. factory orders slipped for the same period. warning signs from still struggling european economies helped push the dollar higher against the euro and sink some material stocks. u.s. steel and alcoa both fell more than 2%. the bank of japan surprised investors overseas, cutting its benchmark interest rate to near zero, a small but significant slide from its previous target. american express was the biggest drag on the dow, losing 6.5% after vowing to fight an - anti-trust charges. visa and mastercard were included in the suit for allegedly violating credit card acceptance policies and have already agreed on a settlement.

microsoft weighed down tech stocks, slipping nearly 2% after an analyst downgrade cited strong competition from tablet computers. sanofi aventis launched a hostile $18.5 billion offer for genzyme. the massachusetts-based company turned down formerly friendly offers twice. sara lee got a boost from an unsolicited takeover offer from kkr which reportedly sparked interests from unilever. and finally, closet eaters rejoice, sneaking a midnight sun chips snack is about to get a whole lot quieter. in response to overwhelming consumer complaints, frito lay is stacking their biodegrayble but incredibly degradable bags. if you own a laptop computer, think twice before literally using it on your lap. researchers point to several

let the good hands give you the protection that fits you... at a great price. dollar for dollar, nobody protects you like allstate. welcome back to "first look." i'm lynn berry. and in sports last night in miami, one new england patriot had a night to remember. here's nbc's fred roggin with an look. good morning. the miami dolphins held the patriots to just six points in the first half and then new england's special teams took open. opening kickoff, brandon tate took it from 3 yards deep in his own end zone, cut to his right, made one move, hit the seam and he was gone. down the sidelines, 103 yards to the house. did the same thing in week one against the bengals. patriots up, 13-7 and the route was on. new england's special teams stifled it out. patrick chung, busy all night. blocked a field goal, blocked a punt and returned this

interception 51 yards for a score. patriots won big, 41-14. the ryder cup, the u.s. trailed by three in correctic manor. tiger woods, the shot of the day. and look at his reaction. he didn't even know he made the shot. only fitting after a long week, it came down to the final match. graeme mcdowell sank a birdie on 16, all but closing out hunter mahan. the finish set off fans mobbing the green. europe reclaimed the ryder cup with a 14 1/2 to 13 1/2 victory. the baseball playoffs start tomorrow, and for a handful of managers, so does unemployment. pittsburgh pirates' john russell, milwaukee brewers' ken macha all fired. the mets handed giam meniah his papers after a season in the big apple. finally, i don't think this is why russell was fired, but you never know. russell wore the spanish version of the peters jersey and he hit a home run. later, he changed jerseys and he struck out.

later this afternoon. it's damp and cool. temperatures in the 50s. and in pittsburgh, you may only see 51 for your high. as we go into wednesday, not a lot changes. we start to move the storm system further to the north so the heavy her rains will be up here, southern, central new england. for new york city southward, much of the day on wednesday will be dry. finally, thursday, we return to nice fall weather. it's going to take a little bit to get there. in ohio, we snuck in rain for you today. toledo, cleveland, the ground is wet. some of that may shift down here towards columbus. this is a really nice day. it's a columbus cold, crisp day, it should be nice in st. louis, kansas city and chicago. we have a lot of good, just some bad. well, can lady gaga beat out justin by-eber for a monster milestone? plus, a look at the world's most eligible women.
