we begin with nearly a decade of war. as the united states enters its 10th year of involvement of the war in afghanistan today, the obama administration is hoping ramped up efforts will reverse taliban momentumment at the same time, the u.s. is taking the blame in trying to make a mends for the death of two pakistani soldiers. nbc's tracie potts is in washington with the details. >> reporter: veronica good morning. good morning, everyone. those two pakistani soldiers and four injured when u.s. helicopters crossed into pakistan's airspace. initially they said this was in self defense. in fact, the u.s. has now acknowledged that the two deaths were in error, that they were fired upon by the united states. all of this as we mark today the ninth anniversary of this war and moving into year ten there are questions arising about whether we're fighting the right enemy in afghanistan. insurgents versus al qaeda, the

real threat, many critics say, to the united states. the real threat there now is supplies. supplies coming from pakistan for troops in -- u.s. troops in afghanistan. those supplies have been blocked by pakistan as a result of those two deaths. a key supply route has been blocked. there have been attacks on dozens of convoys just this week. nato says it wants the routes reopened. back to you, veronica. >> tracie, thanks. last night rachel maddow asked richard engel what he has been able to learn about the status of america's longest-running war. >> i speak with military commanders, as you know, a lot. i ask how things are going in afghanistan. some say, well, we're still trying to get our handle around the cultural significance and ramifications of afghanistan now.

recently. this is nine years in and they are still trying to figure out how the different tribal politics work in the start of year '10. >> we are essentially going through military force to find a space to build for government. >> first it was counterterrrorism. then it was we will make hearts and minds and make friends. now the idea is we will come up with a peace deal for the insurgents. and i think the u.s. is still searching for what to do in afghanistan. what is it trying to accomplish there. >> don't miss rachel's unique take on politics. rachel maddow show right here on msnbc, the place for politics. a new report is raising questions about the obama administration's candidness. a commission appointed by the white house plokd efforts by government scientists to tell the public just how bad the

situation had become. the report also criticized senior energy adviser for going on national television and saying most of the oil was gone. according to the commission, that adviser characterized an analysis which never said the oil had actually disappeared. yesterday the supreme court took on the highly anticipated case involving a protest at a military funeral by demonstrators who say the deaths of u.s. soldiers are god's punishment for the nation's intolerance of gays. picketers were outside that said pray for more dead kids, while inside they decided whether it was free speech or intentionally inflicting emotional distress and that's not protected. justices indicated they would like to rule for the marine's father but aren't she they can. without the right to express ideas that are unpopular, a national discussion would suffer. severe weather continues to

cause chaos on the western part of the country. this captures one of at least four tornados that touched down in arizona. they typically have four tornados a year. it destroyed 30 mobile homes and 15 houses and created winds so strong that trains were knocked off their tracks. in all, 28 tornado warnings were issued for the area but no deaths or serious injuries have been reported. here's your "first look" at some of your other news today. in illinois, a single engine plane crashed into a sports fitness facility. the pilot and passenger suffered multiple broken bones and other nonlife threatening injuries and are expected to make a full recovery. the faa are investigating. police in arizona were called after they found piles of bones on cemetery property. the owner could not be charged because there are no laws on the books. he said he did nothing wrong but

agrees to cover it up. national zoo in washington, an anteater went in for a quick checkup and ultrasound so zookeepers could see how her baby was progressing. she is close to the six month mark and is due to give birth any day now. gaga and mccartney had items up for auction. a ring by elvis presley are among unique celebrity items. organizers say they expect the hot seller to be handwritten lyrics by paul mccartney. starting bid, let's get you to bill karins for a guess at that. what would you say that is going to go for at auction? >> handwritten lyrics? >> yeah, by paul mccartney.

>> maybe 100,000. >> $200,000. you're close. close, but not cigar. >> i wouldn't get it. let's talk about tropical storm otto. yesterday made it all the way to our "o" named storms. none of the storms are headed our way. this one isn't going to do it either. it is spinning right here. yesterday was a tropical depressi depression. now it's considered a tropical storm. not very impressive. it has a chance to intensify the next 24 hours over warm water. it could become a borderline hurricane. look at the path well out into the open atlantic. not heading any closer to the southeast, the bahamas. that's about it. as far as our forecast, it's only going to get better here in the eastern half of the country. our pesky storm system still lingering over new england.

the reason the tropical storms, once you get to october, the reason they have a hard time heading toward the u.s., is because we these cold fronts off the coast from canada. they act like a big foot and kick the storms out to sea. as far as today's forecast, the only areas to worry about rain from kingston, up to albany, syracuse. "early today," vermont, new hampshire and in maine. during the day you could have scattered showers. but by late this afternoon, everyone should be looking at a really nice forecast. temperatures are a little bit warmer in the southeast this morning and chicago. and that's going to yield to a good deal of sunshine. this is a fantastic looking thursday. we were worried about what baseball weather would be like in minneapolis this time of year. 71 in chicago. 83 in orlando. new england, which will be in transition day today, you'll get your reward as we go into friday. temperatures will be in the 70s

puerto rico arrested in what the fbi called its biggest crackdown on police corruption in history. in all, 89 law enforcement officers and 44 others were detained yesterday with many accused of providing armed security for cocaine dealers. authorities in nevada kidnapped her daughter 25 years ago after a custody hearing with her girl's friday. the break in the case came after the daughter tried to apply for a marriage license. looking to ban residents from using food stamps to buy soda and other sugary drinks. they're asking the federal government to add the drinks to a list of items that are off-limits such as alcohol and cigarettes. after a painstaking six-year effort, scientists in australia are showing off digitally restored footage of mankind's

welcome back to fitter look. i'm veronica de la cruz. ace roy halladay made his postseason debut last night. >> reporter: good morning. debut fort ages. in his first career playoff start, roy halladay pitched a no-hitter against the reds. he dominated from the start. struck out one. just won the entire game. lined a shot to left. johnny couldn't make the play. up 2-0. after two, never looked back.

we go to the ninth. phelps grounded out. there it is. no-hitter for roy halladay. the only player to throw a no-hitter in the postseason. phillies took game one in historic fashion, 4-0. to the american league, twins up 3-0 when the yankees mounted a come back. triple off the wall scored a pair. 4-3 after six. tied it in the bottom of the inning. a towering home run just inside the foul pole. yankees led it, 6-4. one on. thome at the plate. rivera earned the save. yanks won it, 6-4. all rangers all the time. up 3-0 with a solo shot off david price in the third. cliff lee struck out ten. rangers took game one, 5-1. playoffs continue today. rays and rangers will start off 2:30, followed by game one between the giants and braves.
