and we begin this morning with fighting foreclosure fraud. as americans struggle to make mortgage payments, just yesterday a bill reached the president that, according to critics would have actually made it easier for banks to foreclose on homeowners. president obama stepped in and blocked the measure using a rare pocket veto. the bill would have forced courts to accept notarizations including those made electronically from across state lines. the worry is such a change could lead to fraud. recently major institutions have acknowledged problems with foreclosure documents, included suspected forgeries. in fact, three of the nation's largest banks have just frozen foreclosures in 23 states. the president has offered to work with congress on a revised bill. yesterday the white house was busy defending its decision to let some companies escape parts of the health care law for now. 30 businesses have received a one-year pass on a requirement banning coverage for certain low-cost, low-benefit plans. the companies include jack in

the box and a firm that insures mcdonald's workers says the new requirement would have required them to raise premiums to unaffordable levels. yesterday a judge rejected a challenge by a conservative interest group saying the mandate for all to have insurance by 2014 is legal. according to a senate inquiry, u.s. funds in afghanistan have been linked to war lords link to the taliban. the government failed to properly manage those hired to provide security under contracts worth billions of dollars. a separate congressional inquiry in june concluded contractors were paying local warlords for convoy protection. armed services committee chairman carl levin says this trend has to stop. >> we must shut off the spigot of u.s. dollars flowing into the pockets of warlords and power

brokers who act contrary to our interests and who contribute to the corruption that weakens the support of the afghan people for their government and for our effort. >> levin says the u.s. must improve the vetting process of new hires if there is any hope of fixing the problem. nevada republican senate candidate sharon angle is suggesting that islamic law is taking root in american cities. she was heard last week saying that the country needs to address a militant terrorist situation that has allowed sharia law to take over cities like deerborn, texas. meanwhile, one of nevada's most influential republicans says that he is reluctantly endorsing angle's opponent, democrat and senate majority leader harry reid. in a statement he criticized angle saying she was a "totally ineffective lawmaker." we are less than a month away from midterm elections,

candidates have enterred the home stretch of their campaigns. last night on "the ed show" ed asked bernie sanders what he thinks will happen if the democrats fail to hold their congressional majority in november. >> the democrats had better win or else we will see more outsourcing, we will see more tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires. you will see more deregulation, so we can have another wall street disaster or a bp disaster. and i'll tell you what else you'll see, you will see either the privatization of social security or a movement in that direction, or raising the social security retirement age to 70. i think it is very clear to anybody who spends five minutes looking at this issue, is that while the democrats in my view, and i speak as an independent, have not been as strong as they should be in protecting the working class of this country, there's no question, but the republicans are out there protecting the millionaires and

billionaires. that's what they have done and that's what they are doing now. >> each night ed shultz tackles the issues that matter most to americans. don't miss "the ed show" weeknights at 6:00 p.m. on msnbc, the place for politics. in michigan, three brazen criminals are seen on video tying up their victims, cleaning out what they could in three minutes and sprayed mace in their victims' faces before making their escape. however, a sheriff's deputy was right around the corner and after a brief search they were apprehended. new jersey police are looking for a father who used his kids to help him burglarize a car. the older kids carted off a bag. two lcd monitors and a laptop while the dad held a toddler. authorities hope to not only solve the crime but help the young suspects as well. and another robbery this time in virginia where a man is seen browsing the aisles of a

local grocery store filling his backpack. police say the man walked into the store at night, hid and went on a shopping spree after the store closed. an alarm went off, but the alarm company never called the police. finally, the pole fitness craze has officially hit the streets of new york. promoters were out encouraging folks to abandon the risque stigma often attached to pole activities, praising its effectiveness as a total body workout, if anything, this sport, they say, is a whole lot more fun than pounding the treadmill. now for a look at the national weather, we turn to nbc meteorologist bill karrins with the weather forecast. did you see that? it looks so difficult. >> if you and i could do it and look like them -- >> that would be a negative, i think. >> let's chat about what is

going to be an enjoyable friday through the weekend period. looking nice for everyone. we have one tropical storm out there, this is otto, our o-named storm. none of the storms have been hitting the united states, this one is heading safely out to sea, pushing away from puerto rico during the day today. the big storm system that played areas of new england for the whole beginning of this week is gone. it's racing up here into canada now we are left with just a gorgeous weather pattern. probably looking at the best fall weekend probably of the entire season. it's going to be hard to beat this one. huge high pressure, it's dry, not humid anywhere. we are watching warm conditions. it's not even that cold out. for this time of year it can get cold and even snow, but instead we will be near record highs. starting this morning at 60 degrees in minneapolis. minneapolis, have you were watching the yankee/twins games over the last two nights, very warm conditions for this time of year. it will continue. this morning maybe a light

welcome back to "first look". i'm veronica de la cruz. here are some of your top headlines this morning. liu xiabo who was sentence ed in china to prison has won the 2010 nobel peace prize. a government investigator says the social security administration mistakenly sent out 72,000 stimulus checks of $250 each to people who were dead. that amounts to around $18 million. the report finds more than half of those payments have been returned.

chilean officials say a drilling machine could reach 33 trapped miners tomorrow. although the actual rescue will begin next week. paramedics will be sent down into the mine to determine which men will be sent up first. right now, authorities plan to extract those who are mentally sound and capable of handling a setback in the narrow shaft. next will be those with illnesses, and lastly those who are most physically fit. researchers in montana say they may have discovered what caused the collapse of the country's honeybee problem. a lethal mix of a harmless virus and normally harmless parasite. exactly how the combination kills the bees is uncertain, but scientists hope with more research they will be able to slow the disorder which has killed off more than 40% of the honeybees since 2006. and a russian soyuz capsule

carrying a russian cosmonaut and two astronauts are headed to the international space station after lifting off from kazakhstan early today. and now here is how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opens at 10,948 after losing 19 points yesterday. the s&p fell one point and the nasdaq rose three. taking a look at overseas trading this morning in tokyo, the nikkei dropped 95 points while the hong kong, the hang seng added 59. thursday the lights were yellow on wall street indicating caution ahead of today's all-important monthly jobs report. first time unemployment claims for last week fell more than expected, giving stocks an early lift. but those gains quickly dwindled with investor placing it safe ahead of today's monthly employment report. wall street hopes the weak reading will spur further steps to boost the economy. the dollar reversed a down trend on thursday slamming oil and gold which took a toll on energy and mining stocks. new mining, copper and gold both

fell more than 2%. gold hit another record of $1,366 thursday before pulling back more than $30 an ounce by the end of trade. oil prices tumbled below $82 a barrel after rising past $84 earlier. abercrombie & fitch jumped more than 9%, and american eagle climbed 8% as teen apparel retailers led healthy retail sales. alcoa kicked off earnings seasons after the closing bell reported a lower third quarter profit that, nevertheless, beat estimates. shares rose more than 3%. pepsi reported mixed results earlier with earnings matching expect ages, but its future outlook disappointed. pepsi fell 3%. rates on 30-year mortgages fell to the lowest level in decades for the ninth time in 12 weeks with the average rate for 30-year fixed loans dropping to 4.27%. finally, in case you hadn't noticed, the future is here. latest example, pay pal's iphone app which allows you to deposit

welcome back to "first look". in sports, after multiple ejections early in baseball playoffs, the umpires are under the microscope nearly as much as the players. here's nbc's fred roggin. good morning. the playoffs continued yesterday, but not without a bit of controversy. we'll start in minnesota. yankees and twins tied at 2. pavano's pitch right down the pipe, that's a strike in anybody's book, but not to the umpire. it hooked like strike three, but it was called a ball. and the very next pitch, berkman

ripped an rbi double to center. the yanks grabbed the lead. that did not sit well with ron gardenhire. he had a few choice words for the umpire and was tossed. and that was the difference. yankees won it, 5-2. another questionable call this one in the rays and rangers game. in the fifth, chad qualls thought he struck out mike young. the first base umpire said he didn't go around. another agreed. young went past the play with his bat. a three-run homer. joe madden was livid. he was ejected in a hurry. rangers won it, 6-0. they're one victory away from wrapping up their first playoff series in franchise history. good old-fashioned pitchers dual in san francisco. tim lincecum tied a major league 14, the braves derek lowell struck out six. in came buster posy and the giants were up 1-0.

temperatures will be about 70 to about 75. warmer spot at d.c. at 77. a nice day to be outdoors. yesterday it was breezy. today it won't be quite as windy. as far as saturday goes, a shot of cooler air heads down. 50s in new england to 60s, calling it 70s in philadelphia. saturday even into sunday looks nice through the mid-atlantic. a couple more clouds may sneak in, but temperatures right where they should be for this time of year. the rest of the country is nice. the only exception, if anyone is traveling to the pacific northwest, rain moves in today that will continue to saturday. middle of the nation could see near record highs, tampa, orlando miami looks great. saturday into sunday, washington, d.c. could see one of the best weekends by far, upper 70s and low humidity. veronica, no complaints this weekend in my department. >> so it's sunny, maybe not as warm, but i give you that. it's sunny.
