jack markle. good friday morning. a showdown in a somehow town, and what happens in vegas apparently isn't staying there. the race for senate in nevada between senator harry reid and sharon angle could very well turn the whole power structure in congress. that's only one reason the entire country is watching this race. there's also the unexpected strength of tea party darling angle who was on the attack last night relentlessly going after the majority leader. now reid not exactly known for being a talented or rater fought back sticking to his message angle is too extreme. much like the expensive tv ad balgtszs the debate got nasty when she accused him of getting rich off the american people. >> you came from searchlight to the senate with very little. now you're one of the richest men in the u.s. senate. on behalf of nevada taxpayers i'd like to know, we'd like to know, how did you become so
10:02 am
wealthy on a government payroll? >> senator ried. >> that's kind of a low blow. most everyone knows i was a very successful lawyer and did a good job in investing. so her suggestion i made money being a senator is simply false, and i'm disappointed she would suggest that. >> steve is a political columnist for salon.com. amanda turkel is a senior political reporter for the huffing ton post. i think you would probably all agree that in terms of strong personalities or charisma. is a lot of debate about an expectations game, and if so, who met or didn't expectations? >> these things are not fought on a level playing field. to me you look at the contrast and the last two days we had the debate in nevada last night and it in delaware the night before. if you look on paper, o'donnell and angle are the same, but they
10:03 am
had to do different things in these debates. the challenge was less than it was for christine o'donnell because sharon angle walked into this debate in a dead even race already where voters in nevada overwhelmingly don't like harary reed. they're looking for an excuse in nevada. they have some reservations that sharon angle seems and sounds too extreme. everything they've heard about her. >> last night don't you think, amanda, we didn't hear any extreme statements. there weren't really any gotcha moments. >> there weren't really any gotcha moments. last night sharon angle was not christine o'donnell, and >> she didn't stumble and wasn't unable to name a supreme koufrt case for several awkward minutes. that worked to her advantage. i don't think this debate was a game-changer. i don't think nevada has said -- they didn't say, i'm going to vote for sharron angle now. i think this lived up to what people expected. because sharron angle didn't stumble, that was good for her.

>> nevada has the highest unemployment rate in the nation, i think still the highest foreclosure rate. this state is in desperate trouble. i want to show this exchange because it really does point out how these two candidates differ. >> all these things i've talked about, my opponent is against those. she wouldn't do that. my job is to create jobs. but she's talking about extreme. >> harry reid, it's not your job to create job. it's your job to create policies that create the confidence for the private sector, to create those jobs. >> you know, one of the things that you can say about this race is people have a clear choice here. i mean they really are very different ideologically. but is it about ideology or is it just about people are sick of hearing reid? >> i really believe it is. there were moments that drove it home to me. verier any the debate harry reid tried to turn his experience as majority leader to his advantage. he read off a list of significant accomplishments the democrats had in congress.
10:05 am
one was he said we passed a tax cut for 95% of americans. that's true. it actually is a very accomplished congress and senate that harry reid has presided over, but it doesn't feel that way to voters right now. it doesn't feel that way to voters in nevada where the unemployment rate is so high. it doesn't feel that way to voters with this incredible economic anxiety. it doesn't feel true. sharron angle turns around and says harry reid has voted over 300 times to raise taxes. that feels true to voters in a year like this. this is a year when they don't like harry reid because he represents washington and they're frightened and uneasy and blame washington and the democrats that run washington. they why i say it's not a level playing field. showing up and being competent works in sharron angle's adds vantage. >> she had talking points. as you said, no doubt about that. because she made the comparison, amanda, and a lot of people are with the o'donnell debate the night before, can you believe this report? a lot of people were saying, look, she made the biggest error

10:07 am
thought she ended up actually doing a very good job. but there seemed to be basic questions to prep for, supreme court cases, maybe what books, magazines and newspapers she would read because palin got that question, too. christine o'donnell walked into this. throughout the debate she was raling against justices who legislate from the bench. there's a question about what supreme court cases you disagree with. she should have had an answer or two and be ready with it. >> amanda, steve, great conversation. thanks to both of you. it appears the 33 men rescued from a chilean mine are managing their fame as well as they managed their 70-day ordeal. the miners haven't talked much publicly about their harrowing experience and have told family members not to talk with reporters either without their permission. outside the hospital, a group of teenage girls was hoping to catch a glimpse of the youngest miner, 19-year-old jimmy sanchez who may be turning into chile's
