we said, yes we can. you can say that same thing two weeks from now. i want everybody to be clear. there's no doubt this is a difficult election. it is difficult here and all across the country. and although i think chris has so far run an extraordinary race, i don't want anybody here taking this for granted. this is a tough political environment. this is a tough political environment right now. this is a difficult election because we've been through an incredibly difficult time as a nation. for most of the last decade middle class families saw their cost rise and their incomes fall. they saw too many jobs disappear overseas. too many parents couldn't afford to send their kids to college. or see a doctor when hay got sick. americans working two jobs, three jobs, just to to make ends meet. and all these problems were compounded when we had the worst

economic crisis since the great depression. the worst in most of our lifetimes. a recession that cost us more than 4 million jobs in the six months before i took office. 750,000 jobs lost the month i was sworn in. 600,000 after that. 600,000 the month after that. most of them lost before any of our economic plans had an opportunity to take effect. it was a once in a generation challenge. i'll be honest. joe will recall this. our hope was because this was such a unique challenge that it would cause both parties to put politics aside for the sake of the country. that was the expectation. we hoped to move beyond the bickering and game playing in

washington. although we're proud to be democrats. we are prouder to be americans. >> we are listening to president obama campaign in delaware. he's there with vice president joe biden. let me bring in mike viqueira, who joins us live from the white house. where the president will be campaigning. a lot of people are curious. you have a 20-point lead in the senate seat held by joe biden. why spend the day there with so few days left? >> well, it is joe biden's old seat. joe biden wanted to be. why not bring the president along with him to sort of fly the flag, show the colors of the administration. number two, this is a race they would like to bring attention to. they would like to portray tea party favorites like christine o'donnell as being the vanguard of the party. as being the face of the party heading into 2012. with people like sarah palin and

christine o'donnell at the helm, they're going to drive the republican train off the cliff. that's only good for democrats. they are there. the president has a lot of political travel scheduled over the course of the next month, or the next two weeks before election day. this weekend in ohio with michelle obama, trying to fire up that base. trying to fire up that youth vote. we've seen it time and time again. you need look no further than the kinds of venues they are choosing. yesterday at mtv, one college campus rally after another to know they are trying to get the base fired up and to the polls. >> real quick, the president will be meeting with condoleezza rice. what can you tell me about that meet sng. >> it's not unusual for the president to have a former national security adviser, secretary of state here by the white house. condoleezza rice is expected to meet with the president about 4:00 today. we expect to hear from her outside the west wing. she happens to be in washington on a book tour. the white house simply saying the president thought it would

be a good idea to check in with condoleezza rice. they just sent out on monday, the monthly meeting on the situation in afghanistan and pakistan will take place here at the white house as well. >> mike viqueira live for us at the white house. thank you very much, mike. and now to the latest in the battle over don't ask, don't tell policy against gays in the military. the justice department is asking the judge who struck down the policy to stay her order. president obama is against don't ask, don't tell, but wants it to stand at least for now. the president gave his reason why during a town hall we saw on mtv. >> this policy will end. it will end on my watch. but i do have an obligation to make sure i'm following some of the rules. >> with me now is former air force staff sergeant david hall. he was discharged in 2002 after someone reported he was gay and is calling on president obama to repeal don't ask, don't tell. thank you for joining me.

you got a loot of attention for many reasons. recently you were an award show with lady gaga. what did you think of the president's answer at an event there? >> the president has said time after time that he wants to get repeal done. he said, you know. i they recall earlier in the year he said he wanted to get it done. we're going to hold him to that promise. he decided to go this rout and bring it to the appeals kourlt. he's making it tough on himself. i hope he does the right thing and gets rid of don't ask, don't tell this year. >> the pentagon says it will comply with the court order to stop enforcing don't ask, don't tell. i would imagine you have some gays and lesbians in the

military still suspicious about the issue of the pentagon complying, and whether or not they are safe to share who with their colleagues. >> they're not safe. they're put in a very dangerous position right now. because right now the pentagon is not enforcing don't ask, don't tell. if they were to come out and then they get to stay, then now don't ask, don't tell is back into play. my advice is don't come out. you should take it don't ask, don't tell is into play. >> he is saying, i want to repeal don't ask, don't tell. you'll see this happen under my administration. then you have the layers. all the caveats put in place here. >> exactly. it is confusing for a lot of people and especially the service members. there's 65,000 currently serving. they don't know if they can come out or don't come out.

families? >> well, most importantly they're holding out the strongest details. they are expecting a payday. their families are talking about an expected $20 million that will be shared by all of the miners and their families. they've already hired an accountant to handle that aspect of this and that was agreed to before they came out of the mine. the joke was when the reporter had an opportunity to speak to one of them. just curiously asking did you guys think in the first 17 days when you had just tuna fish and peaches and only a spoonful each that you may have to resort to cannibalism, and one of the miners interviewed said, well, they never talked about it, but they did joke about it afterwards. this this part of the world where a famous story about a team resulting to cannibalism. it's a story that resonates.

in law school is the same. duty, breech, causation, damages. she had a duty to him to dance in a reasonable fashion. she breached her duty when she kicked him in the eye. it caused damages. >> but she didn't try to kick him in the eye. according to her, he got a little too close. this wasn't a violent attack. >> oh, okay. that would be what we call contributory negligence on his part. >> could this will be why people don't like attorneys. people not trusted. it's like politicians, attorneys and journalists. >> they were both involved in a lawful activity. and she's got a legal responsibility to him in this regard. the part that i'm focused on is as you point out it was an out of court settlement. had it gone to trial in order to convince a jury that she was unreasonable, there would have been expert testimony.

who could have provided the expert testimony in? someone else who is a dancer? or a group of dancers who would have had to come in, take an oath and say ladies and gentlemen of the jury, it's unreasonable if you're kicking a guy in the eye. i shouldn't giggle about it, because he has a serious injury. >> he says he suffered permanent double vision. i'm not minimizing his injuries. for the record, though, the dancer was named suki. and she danced at the cheetah club near west palm beach. >> never heard of it. >> nor have i. in the end if you were in court or the attorney this gay came to with a call, would you have taken him seriously upon the first conversation? >> i absolutely would have if he had that significant of an injury and if he hadn't gotten too close, yes i would have. the frame work i just describe. people say, oh, these damn lawyers. the poor guy is seeing double now. i wonder what he's seeing double

and with the unemployment rate holding steady, people looking for jobs have little to shake them out of the post recession blues. but a new report from money magazine offers an encouraging look at the future with a list at industries expected to grow most and offer more high paying jobs in the next decade. i'm joined by amanda gengler, a reporter for "money" magazine. i wanted to make sure i got your name right. >> perfect. >> it's interesting. you have a lot of people particularly in the midwest, for example, where folks have worked in the auto industry or different industries for such a long time, and those industries are struggling. they want to know what can i do next. >> sure. some of the industries will rebound faster than others in this recovery. this year's list of best jobs draws from the six fastest growing industries. the fastest growing jobs in the

fastest growing industries. things you can train for now in hopes of landing something really good in the future. you have software architect. what's that? that's number one on the list. >> architects design buildings. software architects create the blueprints that software engineers follow. they, you know, tech is becoming increasingly complex. they're in high demand. a lot of programming jobs are being shipped overseas. >> is this something you recommend to a college student? someone going into school now. >> all of the jobs we showed require a bachelor degree. they're professional jobs. but they won't require you to invest ten more years of education and take a lot of courses. >> physician's assistant. going back to number two on the list. what is that?

what do you do? >> well, physician assistants say they love their jobs. they get to interact with patients and do some of the medicine doctors do. they don't have to go to school nearly as long. they don't have the crazy on-call hours doctors have. they're in high ghand. we need more doctors. the american population is aging. >> when you say best job, is that just about money? or is that about the longevity of the job? >> good thinking. we worked with a company to rate the jobs on quality of life factors, flexibility, stress level. you want to take all of those into account. >> we're out of time. but i want to get to this one. the best paying job, number within, anesthesiologist. you can see more in "money"

>> she's against mammograms, colonoscopies and insurance that cover kids with autism. that's really extreme. >> health care a hot issue in the debate between harry reid and his republican challenger sharron angle. it seems to overshadow what polls show is the number one issue, the economy. joining me to talk more about it, "nightly news" news deputy director mark murray. you picked up on this in your first read analysis. why are we seeing more talk about the health care situation? >> well there's no question the economy is issue number one. however, there really isn't much more that congress can do or at least has the will to do when it comes to the economy. it's really in the theoretical stage. health care is a perfect contrast. so you have someone like harry reid who voted and spearheaded

the health care reform law. on the other hand you have sharron angle who wants to repeal it. in a debate like that, it's not just in the nevada senate race. we're seeing this in debates across the country. >> you also say many of these thought it would be a refer dumb on the president. but it's about at least two other people. >> that's right. most people set up the midterms among president obama. if you look at any poll out there, people are much more unpoplar than president obama. that includes nancy pelosi and harry reid. when you look at tv ads across c the country, they mention pelosi. some mention obama, in particularly conservative areas. but overwhelming, nancy pelosi's numbers are worse and republicans are trying to link democrat candidates to pelosi

continue to pull off to the north, the winds will only get stronger on the back side. and we are going to be talking about snow for the slopes. first snow of the season coming with a price in terms of power outages and wind damage. back to you. >> we're hoping people do not get injured. greatly appreciate it, jim. troubling news in the case of the american tourist thought to killed by drug cartel enforcers along a border lake. a mexican official says the search for david hartley's body has been suspended indefinitely. janet shamlian has more. >> reporter: well the latest on this is david and tiffany hartley may have been involved in a case of mistaken identity where the drug cartel thought they were members of a rival cartel who had come over to spy on them. you'll recall david was stopped for a routine traffic stop on the way to falcon lake that day. now two weeks ago. apparently he had mexican plates on his car as well from the time he worked there. authorities think it's possible

that members of the cartel saw those mexican plates, saw the jet skis unloaded, and thought they were from this rival gang coming over to spy on this region. which is really contentious. it's a source of a lot of the marijuana trade. it's a fighting place where a lot of deaths have occurred. we're learning the search for david hartley has been suspended indefinitely. that's coming from the mexico side. they're not saying if the search will be resumed at in time. a couple days ago the lead investigator was beheaded. his head was delivered in the suitcase to an army base of the mexican military. that could have had an impact on this decision. tiffany hartley for her part learned about the fact that the search was suspended. they still want to bring david's body home. they don't know what will happen from this point on. tiffany is starting a really unimaginable job. she's packing up her belongings, the memories of a marriage.

managed to hold onto the power. it's called hitler and the germans. nation and crime. michelle kosinski joins me live from london. what are both sides saying in the controversy? >> hi, yeah, well some people feel it's a great time for this first that really explores the relationship you just mentioned and how much the adoration was there in society. when we say every day life it crept into, some of the art facts on exhibit, they're so interesting. things like teacups or jewelries with swastikas on them. quilts made by women. i even a gravestone with a swastika and children's toys. people feel the time has come, especially since there's debate over outsiders coming in. a survey showed more than one-third of germans thought the

country was overrun with immigrants. that's br the opposition comes in. there's still the element of neonazism there. most are illegal in germany. this museum and others have to get a special special permission to show them. some are feeling it will attract neo-nazis. but the organizers say the time has come because the force is still there and because the time period now, we're far enough away from the time of people who have the most passionate memories about that period of history. it's gotten a lot of attention. there is controversy. really worldwide it's attracting attention. it's an uncomfortable thing for the german people to accept.

welcome back. time for news nation gut check. police officers put the lives on the line for us every day. now more than ever their actions are being put under a micro scope by anyone with a cell phone. last month this video of a man being beaten by a philly police officer while other officers are holding him down hit youtube. but officers say the video doesn't show the entire story. kevin johnson covers law enforcement and legal affairs for usa today. he wrote about the issue. was on the front page.

what are the officers saying here? why do they see cell phone cameras and video cameras as a problem? >> it comes for the fact that they're not used to the scrutiny. despite the fact that everybody knows everybody possessions a cell phone surveillance cameras are everywhere. police haven't gotten comfortable nor are they used to the scrutiny these videos provide. >> i understand bringing up the scrutiny. some would say certainly it would help officers. they have their cameras on the dash on their vehicles in many cases. >> yeah, that's true. and i think a lot of the defense attorneys who are defending the police officers who are caught up in these videos and prosecutors find that for the most part, the videos uphold

some of the actions of the police, even though they look fairly controversial on first look. >> what about the argument that some officers make, and they said this in the rodney king trial, that you don't see what happened before the cameras starting rolled and maybe even after. does that really matter? i think it does matter. in talking to prosecutors involved in the cases involving video, people are interested and are willing to listen to arguments that at least challenge the video before them. this was the case in oakland, california, in 2009 when a young man was killed on a train platform there. >> as we mentioned with so many people having cell phones and video cameras and they're getting more affordable, you can bet we'll be talking about the impact of this caught on camera. thank you very much. great story today. >> thank you. >> what does your gut tell you?
