washington? >> i think that's part of what they are trying to do. i don't flow if it's successful in reaching people beyond their base. great for mobilizing the base. moderate end pint voters aren't thinking of nancy pelosi. what doesn't make sense is why the democrats are attacking themselves as opposed to defending their own policies and leaders. that doesn't make sense. >> does that the not make sense or do you understand why in the hotly contested races democrats are trying to distance themselves from the leaders of their party? >> i think actually it makes more sense for republicans obviously and nancy pelosi's someone that will turn out the republican base. i think, on the democratic side i think that what you hear in the ad is more important than the words nancy pelosi orr obama, washington, words not working, the words new direction, and that's really the thing that for anyone that's running right now, that's what they're running against. they're running against who ever is there. nancy pelosi doesn't have the name i.d., doesn't have the recognition and doesn't have the

persona of someone that you can villainize on a national level. she's no newt gingrich. this is the only house speaker that this strategy's worked to demonize him and make him the face of at party. look at him now. he's running for president, he has best-selling books. it's hard to imagine nancy pelosi leaving congress and having the high profile that newt gingrich had. this is the most famous nancy pelosi is ever going to be. i think that's probably the way she likes it. >> i'm wondering, susan, you've played this game for a long time, 400 ads, seems to me like an extraordinary number even in the season where so much money is being spent. do you think it's money badly spent on the parts of republican and democrats? >> i mean, this does go back to my first recollection, tip o'neill, when republicans demonizes tip o'neill and newt gingrich and few speakers get targeted this way. if there's that many ads and you have that many democrats who, if they're not taking ads out

against speaker pelosi, are saying they may not commit to vote for speaker pelosi, i have never seen that in my political tenure. i think it is because there's some substantial polling behind that that shows that nancy pelosi sort of is the personification of what people feel is wrong with government today in terms of overspending, overcontrol, runaway deficits. the people who are saying now we want government out of our lives as opposed to in our lives. she's the personification of what people hate about obama care. >> there are localized issues and all politics are local. but when i see a lot of these ad that will go off almost on tangents talking about somebody like nancy pelosi, i wonder why anybody's doing any ad that doesn't have something to do with the economy. >> you would think so. the reason the republican party hasn't spent time talking about the economy it's easy to point

the finger at barack obama or nancy pelosi than what they're going to do. the american public doesn't agree with the idea of repealing obama's health care plan, doesn't necessarily agree with the idea of tax cuts for the wealthy, they don't agree with the idea of spending cuts republicans want to propose. talking who they are against, their only strategy. >> susan, we'll talk about moms in politics, coming up also wild weekend weather to tell you. powerful tornadoes tore through the city of rice, south of dallas. look at this twister. ripped cars off the highway. a railroad car torn off the tracks. the storm left a lot of damage on the ground, including this school. we just got these pictures in from this morning. so badly damaged, they closed for the day and for some time to come it looks like. four people did have to be taken to the hospital. injuries, fortunately, not serious. nbc meteorologist bill karins joins me now. what a mess. that is storm still moving up the coast? >> yeah, chris, still have

severe weather heading up through the eastern seaboard. the earthquake a 7.5 magnitude, depth of 20 miles below. if you remember back in 2004 when we had the stsunami thats and a 9.4. it's the similar location and that's why there's a stsunami concern. back to the severe weather threat. amazing pictures we showed you there. strong storms going up here through georgia into south carolina but it's not as bad as it was earlier today. it has caused significant delays in atlanta, 45-minute delays. airports on the east coast doing fine. we're through the worst of this storm system. now it's ready for the big storm. this is going to be a huge wind machine through the great lakes and the northern plains. everywhere in peach colors under a high wind watch, including the midwest from minneapolis to indianapolis, cleveland, detroit, chicago, green bay. talking millions of people that are going to experience this huge storm. to put it in perspective, look at the national map. the white is the clouds.

look how big that storm is. the clouds go from canada down now into north texas. this storm is going to crank itself up. it's going to intensify and winds are going to gust for two straight days. the duration of the event will cause significant power outages in the midwest and the great lakes. as far as lake michigan and lake superior are concerned, we have storm warnings. they're telling boats to stay off the water, especially the middle could experience waves 20 feet high. should be an amazing sight to see. i don't want to be taking pictures. >> you're not bringing your surfboard with you? >> if i could go on storm chasers, i would be on grand rapids on the eastern shore of lake michigan. that's where you'll see incredible pictures of the spray that look like the ohhen. if i don't see you on "morning joe" that's where you are. hamid karzai admits his nation has accepted cash from iran. after weekend reports of widespread financial influence from iran.

today, karzai told reporters at a press conference in kabul both iran and the u.s. give him, quote, bags of money. once or twice a year, iran gives his office $700,000 to $1 million for, quote, official presidential expenses. florida police made a shocking arrest last night, jennifer mee captured national attention three years ago when she couldn't stop hiccupping for five straight weeks. now she's charged with first-degree murder. police say she confessed to luring a man to a home where two armed accomplices were waiting. the alleged botched robbery left the victim dead. we'll speak with an ininvestigative crime reporter later on in the hour. with eight days until election day, democrats have the advantage in two of the most closely watched races in the nation. in the governor's race in california, former governor jerry brown has a 13-point lead over meg whitman. in the senate race, barbara boxer leads carly fiorina by

eight points. phil bronstein, executive vice president and editor with the "san francisco chronicle." good to see you. >> thanks, chris. >> as you know, former ceo of ebay, the most expensive self-funded campaign in history, over $141 million out of her personal account. we've been talking a lot about the idea of how much is too much, is there sort of a limit to what money can do? what happened in this race? >> well, first of all, chris, it's good, you know, california had the hiccupping story before. california stopped hiccupping and things are shifting into place. 14% more registered democrats than republicans. i think that's a big factor. withman aside. her money did get her a long way. $140 million got her even with jerry brown from nowhere. but unfortunately, you know, she stopped at even and she's been

withdrawing ever since in terms of the polls. the part is, the scandal over her cleaning lady and immigration issues that that brought up, part of it, again, the big advantage that democrats had over republicans in california, just in terms of pure numbers. and i think part of it is that people will take a look at meg whitman and see arnold schwarzenegger who has an approval rating of 29%. negatives are very high. you know, she's pitching herself as a businesswoman. arnold, though meg whitman said arnold was just an actor to try to distance herself from arnold, arnold was a businessman, too, came pout without political experience and was going to shake up sacramento and california, and didn't do it. people are looking at those things. >> meg whitman, as you said, she's come under fire, accused of hiring an illegal immigrant. jerry brown was on "the daily rundown" on msnbc, here what happens he had to say about that. >> look, she hired her. she alienated this woman. this woman from what i can see on television, was not very

happy that's a direct product of their relationship. everyone has to decide for themselves. but i think it does race questions, you knowing how she treated another human being with no power. >> how much do you think that played into this race, because we keep saying it's about the economy, it's about the economy, it's about the economy, but there are some specific races where there have been certain incidents that turned, turned the race. >> well, chris, i think it's maybe less the specifics of this incident than it is the issue, was immigration. immigration, obviously, is huge in california. while meg whitman has said shooshoo she's not on the extreme, she doesn't believe in the arizona law, i think that this really reflected badly on her and the issue of immigration reform is important to californians and the latino vote is very important in california. 63% of latinos, i think, are registered democrats. if you get out the latino vote, that is a base, and if you

energize that base, you're going to take advantage of it jerry brown's going to take advantage of it. we should note, however, about california, what's interesting is that this year, anyway there are so many nut jobs in so many other states for a change california gets a break. someone like jerry brown, called governor moon beam last time he ran for governor seems conservative by comparison. we're feeling pretty good in general in california here. >> let's say now nasa's talking about exactly that, establishing a base on the moon. i don't know how many people are flowing to be flown up there. that's neither here nor there. let me ask you about the democrats in general. obviously targeting groups that did well for them in 2008, women voters, young voters, african-american voters. they've had a very strong support in gay voters, a lot of money, and now i'm reading a series of articles, phil, about gays feeling disaffected, some are staying home. alan coupling, the actor who is

on the hit tv show "the good wife" says, quote, obama had done diddley squat for gay rights a lot upset about don't ask, don't tell. do you think there's a turn in that community in support for barack obama? >> well, i don't think there will be a turn in the sense that sud lynn the gay community will start voting in large numbers for republicans because i think, still if you compare barack obama's position with john boehner, fror instance you're going to find a big difference. the gay community the worst that's going to happen some numbers of the gay community will stay home. the gay community in california, certainly northern california, has been activated since 20 years ago. i mean they have really come out and voted in large numbers. they're very active politically. it would shock me, frankly, if a large number of gay voters, gay and lesbian voters stayed home because they're disappointed with barack obama. a lot of people are disappointed

with barack obama. but he's coming on. i saw him at a fund-raiser for barbara boxer a couple of days ago and he had gone from let's all live under one big tent, which was sort of how he came into office, to really seriously attacking republicans. and i think that there's a little bit of red meat factor there. that's going to help maybe not necessarily specifically say with the gay vote, very disappointed that community with the don't ask don't tell, and frankly his position on gay marriage, but i think it's going to help in general with democrats. slogans matter in this campaign. the republicans have, you know, cut taxes, simple slogans matter to people. now, we heard obama at the boxer fund-raiser talking about the slogan they've had for a while after the car crashes you know the republicans crash the car in the last administration we're not going to give them the keys to drive. now they've developed that and boxer and president obama are

more violence out of mexico. a client at a drug rehab center in the mexican border city of tijuana says a gang of armed men gunned down 13 rekocovering addicts there. over the weekend 14 young people were killed at a birthday party. mark, what's the latest you heard from tijuana? >> reporter: this is just more of the horror in this mexican drug war, chris, in which nearly 30,000 people, 30,000 people, have been killed in just about four years since president calderon began his war against the drug cartels. in tijuana last night, witnesses

say the gang of armed men with automatic weapons came into this rehab center, lined up people who were watching a movie, and killed them, execution style. so far the death toll stands at 13. this, in a city where the president of mexico visited recently touting success in the drug war and now this. other outrages have occurred since his visit. >> any sense of what's go on? i know we don't always follow it day to day to daying but it seems in the last few weeks starting with the american couple and he was killed on the mexican side of the border it seems like it's really been intense. >> reporter: it has been intense, but it's been going on for a long time. you're right, a lot of people in the country are not watching it carefully but need to understand it's occurring on our board somewhere linked to thes. these wars in mexico are between drug cartels and the authorities. drug cartels fighting each other over smuggling routes into the

united states to supply u.s. drug users. there's a very direct link. it's really getting bad. juarez, that case on friday night at two private parties for teenagers, for 15-year-old birthday parties gunmen burst in, opened fire and now the death toll is 14, 20 injured and it's really bad. children killed in that. and it's said in some reporting the gunmen were looking for a rival who was there, the report was that he was injured but got away. that's how braisen and bad. acapulco, the resort city, having a lot of violence there, too. >> i want to bring in military analyst general barry mccaffrey, drug czar under the clinton administration. is it worse there now, general, than it was when you were the drug czar? >> no question. it's gotten immensely violent progressively in the last year in particular. mark potter's been watching this

story carefully. it's crossing the border, mexican drug cartels are the dominant criminal organization in hundreds of u.s. cities. this is not a war between criminals. it's one that directly engages innocent and law enforcement authorities on both sides of the border. >> what do they get out of killing 14 teenagers? >> well, i think what's happened now is the business guys, the copos have been murdered or jailed and killers are calling the shots. some it makes no sense whatsoever. they are trying to terrorize the government. the federal police, the armed forces and cause them to give up and say, okay, this is a war we can't win, we'll let the copos run the drug trade and perhaps they'll leave us alone. i think it's in some sense secretary clinton was dead on target, they're trying to terrorize their own government. >> we're out of time. i have to ask you the question that i keep getting asked, obviously acapulco sounds

more than 250 people. hospitals are packed with patients coming from tent camps still housing more than 1 million haitians from the earthquake. "monday night football" on the schedule. sunday didn't have all of the helmet-to-helmet contact we saw last week. 12 more fines were handed out for unnecessary roughness during week six games. remember when we heard the reports that there was barely any oil left in the gulf? well, scientists searching the ocean floor have found substantial amounts of oil. contradicting statements by the federal government. samples ranged from light degraded oil to thick, raw crude. this hour, central california's surf beach reopens to the public but a family and university are mourning the death in its waters of 19-year-old santa barbara student, lucas ransom. he was body boarding friday when a massive shark possibly a great white, pulled him into the water. lucas died from his injuries.

the shark is still roaming free in the pacific. this morning, his brother travis ransom told nbc's ann curry a horrific attack is one of last things on the mind of surfers. >> every surfer has that in the back of your head. it's in the very far back. you go out to enjoy life and celebrate and don't think about it. >> it's a rarity. >> i know there were -- they joked about it but it's something you joke about, it never hits home until something like this happens. >> steven kessel a shark expert and research scientist. thanks so much for being with us. does this sound like a great white to you? >> first, i'd like to start by offering my deepest condolences to the family of the victim. based on all of the reports i've heard it does sound like the attack was by a great white, however, without conclusive evidence, we can only speculate that. >> we should say that the attack, certainly by great

whites, but sharks in general are pretty rare. but is there anything that surfers can do or know about when they go into the water? >> there are things that have been suggested. for example, shark activity has been shown to be higher at peers so probably not a great idea to surf around dusk and dawn in these areas. however, as you said, shark attacks are extremely, extremely rare, and we should not let the severity of this incident overshadow the rarity. so, really, trying to do anything to reduce your risk is -- it's not really any point because the risk is already so low, it's not worthying about. >> when it does happen in a case like this, is there some precipitating factor? what would cause a shark to attack? >> in this circumstance, from the information i've read, it appears to have been some kind of predatory attempt, we can

only speculate. a shark of that size in that area, not unlikely it was an attempt at predation. >> how worded should people in that area be? >> people shouldn't be at all worried. the likelihood of this event happening twice in any short period of time is extremely, extremely unlikely. if sharks were really viewing humans as a viable food source, you wouldn't be able to step foot inside the water. humans aren't -- sorry, are very easy to catch for a shark. you literally wouldn't be able to go into the water without being attacked. if this was a predation attempt, the victim was not consumed. it's unlikely a similar attack will occur in a short period of time. >> as we said, those beaches near santa barbara are open again. steve, thanks so much. >> my pleasure. if you really want fireworks on the campaign trail, you can usually catch some of the best lines coming from the sunshine

to put it in these terms -- played the motherhood card? >> i have had that experience before when i've run for office. >> really? >> well, when i ran for lieutenant governor. it's been quieter when it's been brought up. it's the first time it's been brought up in a debate. there was some surprise from the audience that it was highlighted at the beginning of her statement of experience. >> do you worry about it at all? do you think, though there are a lot of potentially moms out there who see your poeopponent someone relatable and somebody who is outside of the mainstream of government, as you said you've been the head of a state agency, a legislator, you're now lieutenant governor. does that hurt you? >> i don't really think so. she spent four years in congress and 12 years as lieutenant governor and served as state representative in oklahoma. i don't think she's outside the

what a shocking turn of events for a florida teenager, now charged with first-degree murder jennifer mee captured national attention and sympathy in 2007 when she fought through a five-week debilitating case of hiccups. >> does hurt? when i get hiccups sometimes it hurts. >> it hurts a lot. there's points where i will sit out of nowhere and i'll burst down and cry. like right now it hurts so bad, you can probably tell that. >> last night she was rested for her involvement in an alleged armed robbery attempt that left the victim dead. michelle sigona is an investigative crime reporter and joins us now. it sounds like a robbery gone bad? >> that is exactly what it appears to be. i just got off the phone with police a short time ago, and so jennifer and two other accomplices charged with first-degree murder. jennifer will have another court appearance later on today. around 2:00 this afternoon, investigators will have a press conference, sort of outlining more detail.

what i was told over the phone is that she was arrested around 9:00 p.m. last night. not in the st. petersburg area, they would not confirm where she was picked up. but that she is right now behind bars, and she may have admitted to this, to her role in this. >> is there any indication that they knew the victim at all? >> you flow, it's really not too clear. it appears is that she may have in fact been the person to be able to lure this man to a place where he could have been robbed by two other people and that some sort of altercation went down and that he was shot multiple times, possibly three times. >> i want to switch gears and ask you about another case you've been following and one that's so upsetting. this 10-year-old girl, she's missing, relatives said she had an extreme difficult life, she had cancer, lost one of her legs and had a prosthetic leg. she had apparently at least one maybe two hearing aids. and we're told that for a long

period of time she was kept in her room. now i understand her father has been arrested for passing bad checks? what are you hearing. >> i spoke with the hickory police department, the sheriff's office, 20 minutes ago, and they do confirm around 3:12 this morning they picked up her father. they arrested him and charged him with five counts of writing worthless checks along with there's three other failure to appear charges going forth against him as well. he does have a court appearance set for november 18th. so that puts her father behind bars. it puts her stepmother behind bars, elisa baker, charges with obstruction of justice. last week her larry went to the judge and said we're requesting a reduction of bail. the judge said, i don't think so. and instead of reducing the bail, from the $45,000 set he raised it to $60,000, keeping her behind bars which appears she will not be able to meet that bail. and also, investigators were out at a landfill last week in the area really combing a lot of the evidence and picking things up.
