we begin this morning with rescue at sea. a carnival cruise ship that lost power after an engine room fire off the coast of mexico monday morning is now being towed to safety. all 4,500 passengers aboard are safe and expected to arrive in southern california late tomorrow. nbc's kurt gregory has more. >> reporter: the carnival cruise ship, "splendor," drifting at sea since losing power monday. the coast guard says more than 4,500 people are on board and safe. >> certainly they're uncomfortable. and it's something we're hoping we can bring to a close as soon as possible. >> reporter: an engine room fire knocked out electrical power, and the ship shut down some 200 miles south of san diego. planes loaded with supplies for the ship's passengers and crew took off tuesday from the naval

air station near san diego. the planes carried relief supplies to the aircraft carrier, "ronald reagan." plans called for navy helicopters to make the delivery to the stranded ship. >> right now it's like bread, there's cups, utensils, we've got frozen milk, canned goods. easy-to-make items that are served cold. >> reporter: carnival has decided that tug boats will tow the "splendor" back directly instead of stopping in the mexican port of ensenada. carnival says passengers on the ship will receive a free cruise and a full refund. nbc news. the justice department says no criminal charges will be filed against cia officials who destroyed 92 tapes that showed the brutal interrogation of terrorism detainees. the cia tapes were shot at a secret overseas prison after the 9/11 attacks. they reportedly captured two top

suspects facing waterboarding, a form of simulating drowning this human rights groups and obama administration officials say is torture. those tapes were destroyed in 2005 out of fear they could be leaked to the public and compromise the identities of the interrogators. despite yesterday's announcement, cia officials could still be charged with making false statements during the probe. south korea's the latest stop on president obama's travel agenda as he dashes from country to country on his extensive tour of asia. in seoul he and other world leaders will be tax lending economic issues -- taxling economic issues at the summit. he spent tuesday in indonesia where he reached out to muslims saying america will never be at war with islam. meanwhile, a conservative muslim minister hasstered up controversy with some indonesians labeling him a hypocrite for shaking first lady michelle obama's hand. some believe it's improper of

muslim men to touch the skin of any women they're not related to. the minister is claiming mrs. obama forced the handshake on him. reactions are rolling in from the president's stop on the tour to india. he announced a trade agreement that promises to bring some 50,000 jobs be to the u.s. last night on "the ed show," host ed shultz asked james hoffa if he's surprised with the president the's deal. >> we're losing millions of jobs. it's not 50,000 jobs. we have lost millions of jobs to mexico, india, china, and it continues today. last month whirlpool closed down a plant, 1,3 he00 americans lai off in indiana and it's going to mexico. it hasn't stopped. outsourcing, an easy word, it sounds like it doesn't hurt anybody. we're closing down plants of workers in america. your fellow americans are losing their jobs, they've worked there

of firearms including rifles. at the sale attended by a government informant and a gang member, the former marine was asked if he would be willing to sell other weapons to gang members in the future, and he agreed. the suspect calls the charges untrue. and histories your first look at some of the other news going on around america today. a california mystery has apparently been solved. an identified object thought by many to have been a missile launch just off the coast of california was not. at least according to the pentagon, the faa, and norad. although they're certain it wasn't a missile, they're not sure what it was. one military expert suggests it was an optical illusion. an airplane with a contrail illuminated by the setting sun. in new york, some of the city's top chefs will feed hungry new yorkers with dishes made from 1,426-pound pumpkin. mels from the gutted -- meals from the gutted gourd will go to a new york charity. as for the seeds, the farmer will hold on to those for next year's harvest. and in wyoming, it's a sure

sign christmas is around the corner. a 67-foot engleman spruce is cut and on its way cross country from the teton national forest to the u.s. capitol lawn. wyoming residents donated more than 5,000 ornaments to decorate the tree. it is scheduled to be lit on december 7. now for a look at your national weather, let's check in with msnbc meteorologist bill karins with the weather channel forecast. bill, good morning. it's a little shocking still. you go to the store, the christmas stuff's out. >> the ferrero roche chocolates that i always see in drug stores, it's like a dead giveaway. it's time, it's here, the chocolates are out. did i just give them a huge plug? >> do you need chocolate? would you like chocolate? >> i was just thinking about that right now. >> we'll have the interns on that immediately. >> and coffee. >> let me do my weather segment and we'll try and get you hot chocolate, too. as far as weather, new england

still dealing with this ocean storm in. boston this morning, another raw you morning. it's raining, it's windy, too. the southeast is fine today. most of the middle of the country is okay, there's a little snow up there in montana. on the border of montana and north dakota. overall, though, the middle of the nation looks tranquil. the southeast high pressure, getting warmer day after day. it's just new england dealing with the northerly wind and the ocean system that's bringing more showers in. now it's moving through boston, trying to head here to providence. it looks like it's going to hold together for you. if you're heading outdoors in providence or down on the cape over the next hour and a half, bring the umbrella with you. portland, maine, also with a little shower activity, too. not a lot of heavy rain, just showers. the winds are gusty again. 26 mile-per-hour winds at logan, hartford, 25. don't expect a lot of sunshine in new england today. the middle of the country, look at this sliver here. this is the little nose of warmer air all the way through

welcome back to "first look," i'm lynn berry. the cholera epidemic in haiti is spreading, officially making its way to the country's earthquake-battered capital, port-au-prince, where at least 73 cases have been confirmed. a health ministry official says the national death toll now stand at 583. federal authorities say a connecticut woman was illegally fired from her job as an emergency medical technician after she posted disparaging remarks about her boss on facebook. an admenstrative law judge is expected to hear the case in january, possibly setting a precedents as more workers use social networking sites. disturbing details are emerging in the trial of brian mitchell. the man accused of kidnapping elizabeth smart. testifying for a second day yesterday, smart described how she was chained to a tree and raped on a daily basis. she also testified how she was

nearly rescued months after her abduction when a detective approached her at a library, but mitchell prevented the official from lifting a veil she was wearing. and the cop eventually walked away. experts say the thinning ozone layer could be leaving the world's whales scarred fr ed fr severe sun burn. a study showed the mammals are carrying blisters and damage typically associated with ultraviolet radiation. here's your first look at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opens at 11,346, after losing 60 points yesterday. the s&p shed 9, the nasdaq dropped 17. looking at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo the nikkei claimed 136, but the hang seng fell 209. and what goes up must come down. yesterday, wall street's recent rally continued itsslide. the dollar seesawed around the

fed's plans to buy up hundreds of billions in government debt. most commodities shot up, but silver and gold lost ground in late trade. meanwhile, financials were hit hard by the federal deposit corporation's announcement the bigger banks will bear the brunt of a new fee strkture. tough times at dean foods, parent of horizon organics and silk soy milk, plunged 18% after reporting net income fell by more than half. overseas, singapore airlines has canceled three of its airbus a-380 flights as a precaution after finding oil stains on engines. the move comes just days after the australian rival qantas grounded its a380 fleet due to a mid flight failure in one of its rolls royce-made engines. here in the u.s., another bump in the road for boeing's long-delayed dreamliner. a test flight over texas was cut short after smoke was detected in the 787's main cabin. and in deal news, shares of

natural gas producer atlas energy surged 34% after chef ron announced it will pay more than $3 billion for a stake in its shale-based fuel supplies. it was a good day for search engines. yahoo shares ticked 3% high or takeover rumors. google employees found out about a companywide 10% pay raise and a $1,000 holiday bonuses. finally, you can't beat the real thing. at least last night that coke slogan held true for andy warhol's original 1962 pop painting, coca-cola. that went to the highest bidder at sotheby's for $35 million. pinpoint accurate pacers. etch row is golden again -- ichiro is golden again. and a punt that will blow you away. plus, out of the blue against nba royalty, a relative unknown has the best night of his career as the jazz cool the heat. morning from new york north wards. a lot of clouds. there's not a lot of wet weather, boston southward, heading for providence. you see it moving in off the gulf of maine here. a little light rain, no snow or sleet like the other morning. temperatures are in the 40s in most areas. a little warmer than we've been lately. but it's still a little breezy, gusty out there. winds in new england are right around 20 to about -- maybe at most 30 miles per hour. so it's definitely weren't coat weather once again. the windchills aren't too bad, though, because temperatures are in the 40s. your forecast for today, in boston, cape cod, providence, a chance of showers. the rest of the region we'll call it mostly cloudy. still cool, though, highs only in the 50s. maybe we'll sneak into the 60s d.c. through west virginia, and around pittsburgh. veterans day tomorrow, this looks nice. the storm is gone, still chilly, but should be an ample amount of sunshine for veterans day. so we'll talk more about that, of course, tomorrow. >> all right. thank you very much. robert downey jr. swears he doesn't care about an oscar.
