we begin with a call for compromise. president obama took the stage at a global summit of 20 of the world's wealthiest nations in south korea, where finding common ground on the economic front was no easy task. kristen dahlgren joins us from washington with the details. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, veronica. yeah, the stakes were high. it's been the president's goal to double u.s. exports within five years. now some fear disagreements could spark an international trade war. there are two areas where the president is walking away emptyhanded. first, he was not able to reach a trade deal with south korea. the deal would have increased u.s. exports, especially in beef and autos. but he and south korea's president were unable to reach an accord. the president said he wants a solid deal. he is still hopeful he will be able to get that done in the

next few weeks. second, what has been a several issue, the g20 refused to call on countries to stop undervaluing their currency. the u.s. accused china of manipulating its occurrence to make its country more attractive. some say the u.s. did the same to the dollar last week. the president tried to dunn y i disagreements. >> there is an instinct to focus on the disagreements because otherwise these summits might not be exciting. it's just a bunch of world leaders sitting down intervening. and so there's a search for drama. >> reporter: the president insisted the global economy is on the path to recovery. he now heads to tokyo for an economic summit there. veronica? >> kristen doahlgren, thank you very much. passengers and crew trapped on a disabled cruise ship are happy to be on dry land within reach of hot food, electricity, and working showers and toilets.

nbc's stephanie stanton has more. >> reporter: the sight that thousands at sea and thousands more on shore waited for. the carnival "splendor" being pulled into port in san diego. hours later the crippled ship was at the dock, and thousands of weary passengers set foot on dry land. [ applause ] >> reporter: the 3,300 passengers spent four daunting days at sea. early monday morning, an engine rom fire knocked out power. this amateur video captured some of the harrowing moments. [ inaudible ] >> reporter: no injuries were reported, but the fire left passengers without electricity, hot water, and hot the food. and for some, bad memories of what could have been a happy vacation at sea. >> i think the worst part was the food and the smells from the toilets and also from the rotting food. >> reporter: many gave high marks to the crew for hospitality during four days with few creature comforts.

>> the crew was fabulous. they went out of their way. what they had to go through is just beyond -- beyond words. >> reporter: carnival says all passengers on the "splendor" will receive a full refund and a free future cruise if they want to try again. stephanie stanton, nbc news, san diego. here's your first look at the some of the other news going on around america today. an elderly ohio woman is nursing a broken shoulder after being dragged ten feet in a purse-snatching incident. surveillance video shows a van slow, the driver talked to the woman, and then suddenly grabbed the purse and drove off dragging her along. detectives believe the suspect may have been targeting the elderly. a mississippi high school coach faces a federal lawsuit after allegedly whipping his players with what they describe as a heavy leather belt normally used by weightlifters. cell phone video shows one of the reported incidents. the players say they were aidfrom to report the beatings which they claim have been going on since september. the coach has been suspended 28

days without pay. a massachusetts transit worker is without a job after her violent outburst against a commuter. the commuter claims he received bad directions and was attacked after he tried taking a picture when she refused to give him her name. a union rep claims "she was just trying to defend herself. ". and in new york, a rockefeller center christmas tradition is again taking place. a 74-foot-tall, 12-ton norway spruce will be put up later today at rockefeller plaza. crews cut the tree down yesterday. it came from the yard of a new york city firefighter. the lighting ceremony will take place november 30. and now for a look at the national weather, we turn to nbc meteorologist bill karins with the weather channel forecast. you know, it's the one thing i absolutely love this time of year. it's pretty good. the rockettes are already performing in new york, we get the tree coming in. 'tis the season. without a doubt. and it kind of feels like it in

some areas this morning, too. it's still chilly for this time of year. we're in the 30s in boston and washington, d.c.'s, got a cold morning underway at 38. denver, it feels like the middle of winter at 23 this morning. there is cold air out there. but there's a big storm in the middle of the country. this is the story of the weekend. right now it's a rain event. may end as a snow event for areas of minnesota. we'll have to watch that closely. but the green on the map is rain. and that covers much of the heartland. the east coast, enjoy what should be another beautiful day. it's going to be a cold start but should be a sunny finish. should be enjoyable for everyone from maine to florida. very warm in the tennessee and ohio valuleys. st. louis could be around 79 degrees. who needs umbrellas? in texas, much of oklahoma, eastern half of kansas, missouri, all of iowa into wisconsin and minnesota, so it's a large area that needs the umbrellas. the swofrt going through kansas. from here to wichita, thunderstorms going through.

eventually this will work toward topeka, lawrence, and kansas city. omaha, you're also going to have a wet start to the day. our computers are estimating this orange color, that's some almost three inches of rain out of this system. so significant rainfall here coming up right along through omaha, just outside of des moines. today's forecast, east coast, 60s mostly from new york city to d.c. near 70 in atlanta, florida nice, near 80 degrees. there's the wet weather in the middle of the country. and a sneak peek at your saturday forecast. much more of the same. east coast looks very nice, but we have to watch for the rain changing to snow. could be the first significant snow for areas of minnesota. >> uh-oh. you've got your tree up, right, bill? your christmas tree? >> from last year. >> all right. cisco tumbles, disney jumps the gun, and computer history for sale. your first look at business headlines is ahead. >> reporter: a possible super bowl preview, an embarrassing soccer goal, and the heat continue to struggle.

welcome back to "first look," i'm veronica de la cruz. here are some of the top stories making news this morning. senator lisa murkowski's campaign is crying foul in the alaska ballot count, accusing rival joe miller of challenging properly cast write-in ballots in an effort to drag out the senate race. among the ballots some say lisa murkowski or murkowski comma lisa. 80% of the write-in ballots have been cleanly counted for murkows murkowski. recent results of a dna test on a strnd of hair show a texas man may have been wrongly executed ten years ago by then-governor george w. bush for a liquor store murder. the hair was the only piece of physical evidence linking kwan jones to the crime scene, but new analysis found out it wasn't his. bush's staff failed to tell him the condemned man was sequerequg

a genetic analysis of the hair. the army has granted a rare religious exception for his hair and beard. he was seekers speakers of two languages and will be a combat medic. and with president obama out of the country, vice president joe biden honored america's veterans yesterday by laying a wreath at the tomb of the unknowns at arlington national cemetery. and now here's your first look at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opens at 11,283 after falling 73 points yesterday. the s&p shed five points. the nasdaq dropped 23. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo the nikkei sank 136 points, while in hong kong the hang seng plunged 477. on wall street yesterday, investors already on edge about the economy took a warning from cisco seriously. shares of the tech leader fell to their lowest level in more than a decade, tumbling 16%.

investors worried cisco's weak outlook could mean smaller companies are cutting into the bellwether share of the market. fears were felt across the board that other tech sector giants may follow suit. shares of hewlett-packard, ibm, and microsoft were among the hardest hit. keeping an eye on shares of disney today. shares actually started falling before disney reported an unexpectedly soft quarter after an employee reported low posted disney's earnings before the closing bell instead of after as planned. nissan is recalling 600,000 centras, frontiers, and xterras due to steering or battery problems. g.m. announced it will recall nearly 14,000 cadillac and buick sedans over a potential power steering problem. chrysler is recalling some 16,000 jeep liberties to fix faulty windshield wipers. there are reports massive layoffs could be part of yahoo's plan to turn things around. the "wall street journal" reports yahoo is considering cutting back up to 20% of its

consumer products division which accounts for about half of its 14,000 employees. yahoo denies rumors potential job cuts will be companywide. after recently being sold for a dollar, "newsweek" has found a new life and will join forces with thedailybeast.com. how much would you pay for a piece of computer history? christie's is hoping for bids in the ballpark of a quarter million dollars for one of apple's very first home computers assembled and shipped from steve jobs' garage. and on a special episode of "the rachel maddow show," rachel got serious with comedian jon stewart. they talked about hot topics he turns to satire on "the daily show." she asked if he agrees that bill marr's assessment of the group in washington drew an unfair parallel between fox news and msnbc. >> we've all bought into -- that the conflict in this country is left and right.

liberal/conservative, red/blue. all the news networks have bought into that. cnn sort of started it. they had this idea that the fight in washington is republicans/democrats. so why don't we isolate that, we'll stand back here, and that's democrats and republicans will go at it. red and blue staters will go at it. what it does is it amplifies a division that i actually don't think is the right fight. but if what you're asking me is do i believe that, what he's saying that's what i believe, no. but what i do believe is both sides have their way of shutting down debate, and the news networks have allowed these two sides to become the fight in the country. and i think the fight in the country is corruption versus not corruption. extremists versus regular. >> don't miss rachel maddow's unique take on politics and all the day's top stories.

issue today. there's going to be plenty of sunshine so grab the sunglasses. there's no clouds that are even showing up out there. once the sun gets up there, it will heat us up. temperatures near 60 today. this will feel warm compared to lately, filly to trenton to new york city. not bad, boston to albany, that's where we should be this time of year, in the mid 50s. looking warmer, boston has a chance of getting near 60. by sunday, gets cooler and partly cloudy. we're dry, so it looks like a nice weekend. the problem weather of today, if you're traveling from oklahoma city, possibly dallas, definitely kansas city with thunderstorms later today, maybe even minneapolis or des moines, that's where all the wet weather is in the middle of the nation. on the back side, the storm exits up into canada on the back side of it, looks like a chance of snow in minnesota. some areas could get three to six inches. veronica, overall, much of the country looking okay on the east coast especially. >> all right. minnesota beginning to look a lot like christmas it sounds

"unstoppable," with denzel washington and up-and-comer chris pine is an action thriller about a runaway train carrying toxic chemicals. some experts say it will finish on top with up to $25 million. others expect a big second weekend from last weekend's champ "megamind," the family friendly animated comedy. an audience drop of 35% could see it finish first with around $30 million. and a spoiler without a shot at number one, the debut of "morning glory," boasting harrison ford, diane keaton, and rachel mcadams. only about $15 million worth. debuting, the alien invasion offering "skyline," expecting to draw less than $1 5 million. and "due date" could be the spoiler for denzel's top of the box office hopes. i don't know if you remember this, bill. i think about a month ago i said that we had a date to see "morning glory." >> yeah. but the reviews have been mixed. i heard it's not as funny as
