we begin this morning with beating the odd. after losing her state's republican primary, alaska's incumbent senator lisa murkowski launched a seemingly desperate write-in campaign to seep her seat. after weeks of wading through write-in ballots she's being called the winner. tracie potts with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: lynn, good morning. and it was a hard-fought one. 's difficult to win these national elections as a write-in candidate, but it appears this morning that is exactly what lowsa miami hurrica-- lisa murk done, the first person to win since strom thurmond in 1954. this was a big tea party loss in alaska. she poured money and support and

urged the tea party express to get involved with the opponent's campaign, joe miller. they won the primary, but it looks like lisa murkowski may have won the general election. here's part of her victory speech. >> alaskans knew exactly what they were doing and showed their intent with every letter that they put down on that ballot. >> reporter: back here in washington, another hard-fought win. we now know that representative nancy pelosi will be the minority leader in the house for the democrats. she won that election among her colleagues yesterday. a new nbc/"wall street journal" poll shows that almost half of the country, 48%, feel positively about the republicans taking over congress, at least the house of representatives, in january. and they're positive about the resulting divided government. when that new congress meets in january, they'll have issues to deal with. before that, the old congress is

looking at don't ask, don't tell on their heavy agenda. this is something that harry reid says they will probably deal with after the thanksgiving break. lynn? >> thank you very much. fresh off of learning of her apparent victory, senator lisa murkowski gave her first interview left night on "the last word lawrence o'donnell." she was asked if she thinks her challenger, joe miller, will continue to push for a recount. >> over 100,000 alaskan voters have correctly filled in the oval and written in lows -- lisa murkowski. that's a pretty affirmative act of the electorate in the state. joe is saying, well -- trying to blame this, this, or the other thing. but the fact of the matter is is even if we were to throw out every one of the ballots that he has challenged, he still loses by the count. soho had said several days ago

that if the numbers don't line up, he's not going to drag this out. so he's going to have to make that call. but alaskans have clearly spoken and have put it in writing. >> lean forward with "the last word" each night as lawrence o'donnell takes on the most compelling stories. airing weeknights at 10:00 p.m. eastern only on msnbc. the place for politics. two years to go before the 2012 presidential election. and things are already getting interesting. once again, sarah palin is involved. in an abc news interview, the tea party favorite says she's seriously considering a white house run. palin, who's been busy filming a tv series and watching her daughter on "dancing with the stars," says she's trying to figure out if jumping into the race would be good for the country and her family. when asked whether she thinks she would beat president obama, palin said, "i believe so." a mixed verdict in the case of a former guantanamo detainee.

the first to be tried in a civilian court is reigniting the debate over how terror suspects should be prosecuted. yesterday a new york jury acquitted ahmed ghailani on all but one of over 280 charges against him for the deadly bombings of two u.s. embassies in 1998 that left 224 people dead, including 12 americans. he faces 20 years to life in prison for conspiracy. several lawmakers reacted saying the decision shows why civilian court should not be trusted to handle cases of al qaeda terrorists. still, be supporters of civilian trials pointed out that ghailani will serve a lengthy sentence and have fewer arguments for appealing his conviction. in the trail, the main witness against ghailani was disallowed by the judge because investigators found out about him after ghailani was abusively and coercively questioned. histories your first look at -- here's your first look at other news going around in america. an illinois woman is in maximum security prison following a

confrontation with a hooter's restaurant security guard who happened to be an off-duty cop. she was allegedly disputing her bill when things escalated after the cop reportedly used a racial slur. he grabbed the woman and shook her. later testifying that the woman spat on him. she has filed a civil suit against hooter's and the cop. a texas man is protesting about the level of force used against him after he was pulled over for speeding. dash cam video shows the end of a seven-mile chase where a deputy tackles the man off his motorcycle. the police department defends the actions claiming they were consistent with the use of force policy. california animal control was called in after someone saw a snake under the hood of their car. it took rescuers about 40 minutes to remove the ten-foot-long red-tailed boa. no one knows how it got there, but the critter is up for

adoption. in washington state, workers were busy cloning up a sea of salmon -- cleaning up a sea of salmon that spilled across the highway following an overnight semi-truck accident. it's not clear what they'll do with the salmon, but there are some suggestions this some of it may be salvagable. bagel and lox. now for weather and bill karins with the weather channel forecast. and a little dirt. >> a little sushi free-for-all. i've caught a couple salmon in the river, upstate new york. as far as weatherwise, wasn't yesterday an amazing day? we had those gusty winds with storms early, did damage in new jersey. in the afternoon, skies cleared and the winds howled. it was 40 to 50 mile-per-hour gusts from philly to new york. this morning the only gusty winds this are left is from boston northward across new hampshire and maine. even those winds are beginning

to come down. our big wind event is over, we should be left with a nice day really from in up the eastern seaboard. a typical fae do-not-call. there's a little -- a typical fall day. there's a little green here and in the ohio river. it's a weak storm system. we're not too concerned about this. also from denver to texas today, looking nice. a little cool in oklahoma, but it's going to be nice. as far the radar goes, the only people who really need an umbrella, cincinnati to louisville. light showers out there. nashville maybe a sprinkle. huntsville, tuscaloosa, we're going to be watching a little light rain. your forecast today, it's a cold start. definitely kansas city, st. louis, chicago, minneapolis, temperatures are in the 20s and 30s. but litter this afternoon, sunshine, we should get into the 40s at least. if you're on the warmer side, you having to to texas. san antonio should be nice, houston, nice. along the gulf, we'll be good. the warm spot, miami at 84.

missing pilots of an air force f-22 jet that crashed in alaska during a training exercise. rescue aircraft have spotted the wreckage and are continuing to search for the pilot who was equipped with survival gore and trained to survive in an arctic environment. an american convicted in the death of his wife while scuba diving on their honeymoon in australia will be deported to alabama after officials promised not to impose the death penalty if he is convicted in the u.s. gabe watson was released from prison last week after serving an 18-month sentence for the 2003 manslaughter of his wife. and argentinian firefighters are being hailed as heroes after rescuing a 3-year-old little girl who fell 7 feet down an abandoned well -- 75 feet down an abandoned well. when the operation was finally over, vanessa was taken to a local hospital where doctors say she was shocked but otherwise unharmed. now here's a first look at

how wall street's going to kick off the day. the dow opens at 11,007 after falling 15 yesterday. the s&p was up a fraction. the nasdaq added 6. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo the nikkei climbed 201 points. while in hong kong the hang seng gained 422. get ready to hear every painful car pun you can think of because the talk on wall street is going to be all g.m. all the time. general motors is rolling out its new-again stock at the high end of its proposed range with share prices at $33 apiece. down the road we'll find out exactly how much cash the bailed out automaker brings in. estimates current low top $23 billion, which should drive down the government's stake by nearly half and make it the largest ipo in u.s. history. overseas this morning, it has been announced that ford will end its run as masses it's

biggest shareholder with plans to slash its 211% stake down to 3.5. investors keeping an eye on jobless claims and new developments out of europement worries that a bailout could be the only cure for ireland's troubling debt had investors on edge yesterday. also weighing down markets, the government reported construction of new homes fell nearly 12% in october, hitting an 18 hava-month low. financials struggled wednesday on news the fed is stepping up its efforts to keep tabs on 19 of the nation's biggest banks with a fresh round of stress tests. however, the flat day did have a bright spot. retail stocks climbed higher after target forecast its best same-store sales in three years. earnings from limited brands could extend the upbeat pace in the retail sector today. the victor why's secret and bath and body works parent respected impressive earnings -- reported impressive earnings after the bell, sending shares up 5%. want to do your part to

welcome back. i'm lynn berry. this is "first look." in sports, all season the miami heat have been waiting for one of their three superstars to produce. and the wait's finally over. here's nbc's fred roggin. >> reporter: good morning. so far miami's big three has been more like the big two. lebron james and dwyane wade have both had huge games this season. last night chris bosh finally joined the fun. against the suns, bosh with the jumper here, a jumper there, a jumper everywhere. he did most of his damage away from the basket. had 22 by the half and finished with 35. what's a miami hieghlight withot lebron james? the steal, the lay-in, the foul. heat won 123-96. hornets and mavs. the alley-oop. new orleans was up ten. dallas came back, had a chance in the final seconds.

david west stole the ball from dirk novitsky. the hornets won 99-97. tony parker and eva longoria announced a divorce. it didn't affect the game. sidney crosby doesn't get a lot of penalties but maybe he should. the score -- even when penalized he makes it work to his advantage. crazy goal between the red wings and blues. harmless shot. the goalie made the save. the rebound went straight up, and he swatted it into his own net. he tried to bat the puck out of midair but batted it in for the right wing goal. the blues lost 7-3. finally, they call soccer the beautiful game. nothing beautiful about this. watch closely. it's being called the miss of the century. uzbekistan gave the ball away. so qatar's 18-year-old striker took it and look here -- wide open net, i'll kick it. oh -- kicked it into the post.

he couldn't believe he missed it. frankly, neither could anyone else. i'm no soccer player, but even i would have made that. that's your first look at sports. i'm fred roggin. now for another quick look at the weather, nbc meteorologist bill karins from the weather channel. trash talk there. it's a little strange. somehow he corned with his left -- he kicked it with his left foot instead of his right. tried to be smooth. >> thanks. a little cool out there, but not bad for this time of year. still windy up around boston. temperatures are in the 40s. so you don't really need the heavy winter coat. at least not today. indications are next week by the time we get to thanksgiving or so temperatures could take a nose-dive through much of the region. enjoy the warmth while we have a little today. the winds just a little gusty. boston, 30 miles per hour. nothing like yesterday across the region. and just about all the clouds and rain is gone, too. a couple sprinkles off the lakes
