we begin this morning with a bitter battle. as the clock ticks down on the outgoing leadership in the house, the fight over compromise on key votes is definitely heating up. nbc's tracie potts joins us from washington with the latest on capitol hill along with details on president obama's latest transatlantic trip. good morning. >> reporter: lynn, good morning. the president's leaving it all behind, at least for two days. he's headed off to europe. left just before midnight for a couple of days of meetings with nato and the european union. trying to reashower our allies -- reassure our allies there they're in deals with afghanistan over trade. at home, he's dealing with jobless and americans' extending unemployment benefits. that has not passed the house as of yesterday. two million americans are scheduled to run out of benefits

december 1. it will cost $12.5 billion to try to extend that through the end of february, but as of now, that effort is stuck here on pitol hill. and of course, the big issue that we've been talking about, the bush tax cuts expiring at the end of the year, what to do. the white house had signaled that it would embrace a temporary extention for the wealthy. now you democrats seem to be setting up a showdown, saying that they will schedule votes that only deal with the middle class, something republicans have made very clear they will not support. the tax cuts expiring as of january. and finally, one issue here that may be be resolving itself, at least we're seeing progress. senator joe lieberman says it now looks like they do have the votes to repeal don't ask, don't tell, that policy on gays in the military. democrats announced yesterday that they do have republicans who will support it if they are allowed to debate and add amendments to that policy. lynn?

>> thanks. growing frustration with the transportation security administration and what many americans feel are overly intrusive passenger pat-downs and full-body scanning procedures has led to several airports across the country to take an alternate route. some 17 airport administrators faced with the challenge of keeping passengers safe and satisfied have exercised their right by law to use private security screeners instead of the tsa. as long as they follow the same rules and guidelines. one veteran congressman is leading the push to convince airports to drop the tsa. of course the nationwide uprising has taken on a life of its own recently through numerous internet campaigns and a barrage of complaints. here's your first look at some of the other news going on around america today. a group of seattle detectives are accused of failing to notify their supervisors of surveillance video that shows an officer kicking a teenage suspect. police say the 17-year-old suspect fled the scene of an

undercover drug bust. the video shows an undercover cop cornering and kicking the suspect several times. internal affairs is investigating, and the aclu is calling for a civil rights investigation. also in washington, surveillance video shows a man taunting, then assaulting a developmentally disabled man. the 55-year-old victim of the unprovoked attack is seen getting off a bus when he's punched from behind by the man who then walks away. the victim suffered a broken jaw and deep cuts. the man has been charged with second-degree assault. the chilean miners and their families got the hollywood treatment yesterday. the international heroes took a whirlwind tour of tinseltown, riding high on a double-decker bus, waving and chanting to the crowd. the miners and rescuers were in town for a thanksgiving tv special. and in new york, we are inching closer to the holiday season. actress blake lively unveiled the 25,000 swarovski crystal

star that will sit atop the rockefeller christmas tree. the 12-pointed star has 728 led bulbs on 3,000 feet of wire. and the tree will be lit on november 30. now for a look at your national weather, we turn to bill karins with the weather channel forecast. good morning. and you know working here at rockefeller center, you know what this time of year means. it means an extra five minutes trying to get to work. >> there you go, that's right. everybody with cameras. we're not trying to be the grinch, but you seriously. it makes a huge difference. >> can you believe a week from how it right n-- from right now is when the people will be rushing to stores. >> don't remind me. i haven't even mentally prepared. >> this is the big weekend. >> that's right. block friday. >> next friday. everyone's going to be getting ready for thanksgiving this upcoming weekend. the least thing we need is big storms or anything bad. it doesn't look like that's going to happen. things are typical in many of the east. 44 in atlanta, pretty average

for this time of morning, this time of year. actually, warmer than normal even at new york and boston, above freezing. there's a little sign of things to come. look in montana. this is not a misprint, that's a negative 11 ne 1 in cut banks, montana. there's a science of the arctic air that will move across the country. by the time we get to thanksgiving, especially it looks like trouble tuesday, wednesday, thursday, a big chunk of cold air is going to move through the middle of the country. expect a very cold thanksgiving here in the central plains. still minneapolis is only going to have highs probably in the 20s. to feel a lot like winter. this weekend and raising right now, there's not a lot of horrible weather out there unless you're on the west coast. that's where we're seeing windy conditions. there's going to be a lot of snow in the mountains of california as we go throughout the next couple of days. for the skiers, if anyone does any of the thanksgiving ski plans, you're going to love it. as far as rain goes, hard low any. you can leave the umbrella home.

welcome back to "first look," i'm lynn berry. and here are some of the top stories making news this morning. the house ethics committee has voted to censure embattled new york congressman charles rangle after finding him guilty of financial misconduct. if the full house affirms the

recommendation when the chamber returns after thanksgiving, rangle will get a formal scolding from the speaker in front of his colleagues. alaska republican senate candidate joe miller is asking a federal judge to stop state officials from certifying the election in which rival lisa murkowski has already been dreiered the winner. -- declared the winner. an attorney for miller sought the injunction yesterday despite the fact the state's republican party has recognized rurk ski as the write-in victor. ohio police say an unemployed tree trimmer responsible for kidnapping a teenage girl, told police where to find the body of the girl's mother, brother, and family friend. the revenue mains were found in a plastic bag stuffed in a hollow tree. the father of missing american teenager natalee holloway say dutch authorities have requested her dental record to see if they match a possible jawbone with a tooth found in aruba last week.

astronomers have confirmed the first discovery of an alien planet that came from another galaxy. the jupiter-like planet once orbitted a star born in another galaxy but was later captured by our own milky way between six billion and nine billion years ago. sounds like science fiction, but it is true. here's your first look at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opens at 11,181 after shooting up 173 points yesterday. the s&p added 18 points. the nasdaq jumped 38. taking a look at overseas trading, in tokyo the nikkei edged up eight points. in hong kong, the hang seng fell 31. wall street reversed course thursday, surging higher thanks to hopes of a solution to ireland's banking crisis and buyers buying into the return of public trading in general motors. expectations of an irish bailout by the european union drove u.s.-listed shares of the bank of ireland to skyrocket more than 33%.

those expectations also strengthened the euro against the dollar, boosting commodity and energy prices, and stocks in related sectors. aluminum producer alcoa was the top percentage gainer on the dow industrials, up almost 3.5%. also fueling optimism, data that showed weekly applications for unemployment insurance hit a two-year low last week. and factory activity in the country's mid-atlantic region accelerated in november, suggesting the economy's recovery is gaining speed. g.m. shares roller coasted throughout the day, shooting up as much as 9%, reflecting investor confidence that the automaker can sustain its recovery after returning to the market in the nation's largest ever ipo. g.m. accounted for almost 10% of all shares traded on the new york stock exchange. g.m. closed up 3.6% at $34.19 a share. keep an eye on dell today. after the bell, the computermaker's stock zoomed in

trade adding to thursday's upbeat mood. dell credited its strong demand from large corporations for its quarterly numbers, finishing above wall street expectations. and finally, horse racing betters at one track in east england couldn't believe their eyes tuesday. on the same day the nation was celebratesing prince william's engagement, a horse was running named to catch a prince. hunch-playerers went home happy. the horse won at 8-1 odds. with general motors so much in focus on wall street yesterday, last night on "the rachel maddow show," she asked ron bloom, a member of the white house auto industry task force, what the success of gms stock offering means for the overall health of the u.s. auto industry. >> i think it's a good day for the country. it's a good day for general motors. but you it's a good day for the country. look, 17 months ago this country did enter bankruptcy. but if it beenal howed to enter bankruptcy -- been allowed to

punching it in. 16-0. chicago defense got to thigpen six times. pepper with three sacks. they shut out the dolphins 16-0. the first nfl team to win 700 regular season games. and proving that winning isn't anything, the mariners' felix hernandez won the a.l. cy young award despite a 13-1 record. tampa bay's david price finished second in the balloting. basketball, magic and suns. steve nash sat out with a sore groin. no nash no problem for orlando. the alley-oop from nelson. along the baseline, the dunk. howard had 20 points and 12 board. final seconds, up and under at the buzzer. magic up 28 at the break, winning 105-89. there was almost no scoring between the flyers and lightning in the bears-dolphins game. the two teams combined for 15 goals. tampa's stephen stamcos had a hat trick and nine points.

northern new england, i'm sure everyone in the the burbs will have the heater on full blast in the car. you don't have to worry about anything bad weatherwise. a few snow showers popping up off the great lakes. skies had a couple rain showers -- on syracuse had a couple rain showers, and that may be causing a couple snowflakes in syracuse. over interstate 88. koeble skills located, the baseball hall of fame in cooperstown probably got a little snow this morning. as far the forecast goes, mostly sunny to if not sunny skies, it's going to be brisk and chilly. temperatures only in the upper 40s to low 50s. but not bad for this time of year. buffalo, one of the cooler spots at 43. saturday looks to be similar, if not a little bit warmer with highs in the 50s. it looks dry saturday and sunday throughout all areas of the east there. the only travel trouble spots today, the west coast is a little stormy. and it's going to stay that way. even los angeles could get rain on saturday. but if you're in the middle of the country or even seaboard, it's a good weekend to get things done. rake the leaves, go shopping. the weather won't cause you any concerns.

last night alone it's expected to have earned roughly $30 million. as of wednesday, warner brothers claims it had taken in a record $27 million in advance sales just for this weekend. more than 3,000 show times across the country have already sold out. the movie will play on 239 imax screens in the u.s. the most in imax history. now the film costs an estimated $150 million to make, and industry experts say dream come true figures for the studio would be over $100 million for the opening weekend and $400 million over the long haul. and the only other movie opening this weekend is russell crowe's "the next three days." the action thriller will draw mostly older movie-goers and might be able to hit the $10 million mark and crack the top five. really, bill, the bottom line is everybody is going to "harry potter." which actually explains why your wizard hat was hanging in the
