we begin this morning with a provocative move. the president of south korea says the response to north korea will be firm. after the north fired dozens of rounds of artillery on to south korea's yeonpyeong island. a south korean official says that nation forces quickly returned fire. several hourses reportedly erupted into flames and residents rushed to evacuate. south korean tv showed plumes of smoke rising above the island, home to over 1,000 people. south korean officials say two south korean marines were killed and at least 17 soldiers and three civilians have been hurt. the latest information indicates the shelling appears to have stopped. according to south korean media the incident prompted south korea to scramble their fighter jets and the white house issued

a statement strongly condemning the north korean attack, urging the north to halt its, quote, belligerent action. back at home as thanksgiving travelers pack their suitcases for this week's travel rush top security officials are largely sticking by airport screening methods. nbc's steve handelsman reports. >> reporter: with a peak travel day looming wednesday, the tsa says it will pick fewer passengers for pat-downs, hoping travelers do not protest by refusing body scans and demanding time-consuming physical inspections. >> let's not tie up those people who just want to go home and spend time with loved ones. >> reporter: but many travelers are angry. this was atlanta. >> i don't believe tsa has ever found a terrorist. >> reporter: tom saw yer says his agent wouldn't listen. >> totally ignored my three requests to tell him of my condition. condition. >> so the agent pressed too hard on a bag tom wears to collect

his urine and the bag leaked. >> this is so embarrassing. it was so humiliating. i wasn't prepared. >> tsa says the public is getting a distorted view that most flyers are getting pat-downs when, in fact, rights it's one in every 100. homeland security secretary janet napolitano today is not backing down. tsa might refine its body scans and do a few less pat-downs, but it won't drop them. >> we've got to make sure that we are doing what we can and should to adequately screen passengers. >> reporter: napolitano notes, it was just last year's busy holiday season when the accused underwear bomber got on a plane with a bomb on his body. i'm steve handelsman, nbc news, washington. this morning, an investigation in under way in cambodia to determine what caused a day of celebration to turn into utter panic, chaos, and what's being called the world's worst stampede in the past 20 years. it's not clear what triggered

the disaster that left 378 people dead and several hundred more injured. anna bell roberts from our english broadcasting partner itn reports. >> reporter: ambulances ferried the dead and injured to hospital. people who had been celebrating the last night of cambodia's water festival on the banks of the river. it was a celebration that ended in horror. spectators were packed on to an island for a concert. it's thought a few fainted, sparking panic and a stampede. as people rushed to escape and get off the island, a packed bridge became a death trap where those who fell were trampled under foot. others jumped off into the river below and drown. hospitals were overwhelmed. blankets covering row upon row of bodies left in corridors while medics fought to treat the injured. one local journalist describes the scene. >> a couple of people fainted.

they were panicking happen, and because there were barriers set up on the mainland side of the bridge to prevent people spilling on to the road everyone got backed up and people couldn't get out and there was a panic and stampede and people jumping off the bridge. a lot of people in cambodia can't swim so there's no doubt some people drown in the river trying to get off the crush of the bridge. >> reporter: thursday have been declared a day of national mourning here. the question of why this happened will certainly follow. annabel roberts. itv news. >> really is just horrible. here's a look at your first look at some of the stories going on around america today. a rare late november tornado ripped through northern illinois yesterday. amateur video shows the fast-moving funnel sweeping through the area, knocking down power lines and causing major infrastructural damage. more than 42,000 homes lost power. also five kids and a bus driver were injured during the storm when those heavy winds reportedly

picked up their school bus and threw it about 100 feet off the road. authorities say their injuries are minor, though there were complaints of back pain. officials in colorado are taking no chances this season, especially with the wind and snow that has whipped up ideal avalanche conditions. they're avalanche blasting in an effort to reduce the potential of a huge avalanche forming, a dangerous threat that comes with above average snow pack depth. in florida, a local lawyer gave away a thousand turkeys in his community. he got the idea when he realized his clients were facing financial difficulty. in a pleasant twist, some of the people in line passed on the favor, hoping to buy more turkeys for others to claim. great start to the season, isn't it? for a look at your national weather we turn to nbc meteorologist bill karins with the weather channel forecast that is busy today. ahead of the holidays. >> it's funny, the east coast is warm, it's unusual, but, you know, that's the exception. lynn, everyone else is dealing

with very interesting weather conditions out there. those tornadoes very rare for this time of year. it's been a long time since northern illinois has seen late november tornadoes. there were eight of them in total and we saw some of the damage that was done, a couple other buildings were destroyed. there was also a lot of hail reports and damaging wind reports with those storms. thankfully the thunderstorms have now settled down. they're still some storms on the front. i know memphis is getting a lot of heavy rain right now and you could get potential of isolated flash flooding and that's probably the worst of it. we're not going to see any more tornadoes today. that's good. this is storm one. storm two is back here. now dropping down out of oregon into -- soon into utah. i mean this is a huge winter it storm and has a lot of cold air it to work with. i mean, i'll show you what's happening out there in a second. first thing's first, the tornado watches have been dropped. there's the heavy rain around memphis. some of the heavy rain is heading through downtown nashville. your commute will be a little slow. up 65 louisville starting to

clear out ever so slowly and still rain showers left in ohio. yo notice you don't see the yellows or reds anymore. that's the intense rain. light green stuff is just shower activity and light rain now heading through pittsburgh. by the time it gets to the east coast shouldn't be a lot left to it. areas like new york and philly, maybe some showers today, not a lot of heavy rain. out west we have a blizzard warning in effect for salt lake city utah. this is going to be a storm they haven't seen for years out there. going to see gusty winds and heavy snow in downtown. that's today into tonight and look at these temperatures, lynn. it's minus two right now in billings, minneapolis is 14. so i mean enjoy this 68 in d.c. today because there's many other places in the country that are suffering. >> dare i say it, felt sort of muggy yesterday. felt guilty saying that. >> don't get people upset in the midwest. >> i know. i'll tamp it down. >> thanks, bill. coming up hedge funds raids, possible recalls and every man's dream, the man cave option for husbands on black friday.

welcome back to "first look." i'm lynn berry and here are some of the top stories making news. this morning's "new york times" reports a man claiming to be a senior taliban commander in secret peace talks with the afghan government was, in fact, an imposter. just last month, both american and afghan officials held high hopes for the negotiations, but this latest revelation sets back efforts to find a political resolution to the nine-year-old war. according to the wall street journal iran's parliament recently planned to impeach president mahmoud ahmadinejad but held back on orders from the country's supreme leader. still, local media reported that lawmakers have started a motion to collect the 74 signatures needed to openly debate impeachment. and in alaska senate

candidate joe miller is challenging the apparent victory of incumbent senator lisa murkowski. he claims election officials violated state law as interpreting write-in ball lots despite mistakes. this after a judge ordered to stay on a certification ruling miller raised serious questions that should be handled by the state. here's a first look at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opens after falling 24 points yesterday. the s&p shed a point. the nasdaq gained 13. taking a look at oversees trading this morning in tokyo the nikkei rose 92 points, but in hong kong the hang seng tumbled 627. and worries swept across the street yesterday over what could be the nation's largest ever case of insider trading. bank stocks suffered after the fbi raided the offices of three large hedge funds dragging shares of goldman sachs and bank

of america down 3%. a broad federal probe into wide spread alleged misconduct could take down an unprecedented portion of the $1.7 trillion hedge fund industry. instability in ireland's government cast duty on a budget needed to secure its debt. shares of bank of ireland tumbled 17%. tech stocks led modest gains. thanks in part to an upgrade for chipmaker sandisk. meanwhile, netflix shares jumped over a new subscription offering unlimited streaming video rentals for $8 a month. the upward tech trend could continue today. after the bell, hewlett packard reported its profit was up 5% last quarter. hp shares rose nearly 2% in late trade. also keep an eye on j. crew. the retailer is reportedly near a deal to be bought by two private equity firms for about $3 billion. a federal agency is weighing a recall of 25,000 honda hybrid

welcome back to "first look." i'm lynn berry. in sports when a team proves to be a huge disappointment like this season's minnesota vikings it is usually the coach who's first to go. here's nbc's fred roggin. good morning. i don't think anybody can argue it's been a season of mistakes for the vikings from brett favre to randy moss. now their head coach has taken the fall. brad childress fired yesterday amid turmoil. once a super bowl contender, the vikings are 3-7. leslie frazier will serve as interim head coach. from being fired to a guy who was on fire, philip rivers had his way with the broncos. tied his career high with four touchdown passes, this one to patrick creighton put them up 21-7 at the half. here we go to the third and it's rivers. watch him go. 57 yards for the score. chargers started the season slow, they've now won three straight beating the broncos. 35-14. baseball the reds joey votto a landslide winner for the
