bad situation there getting worse. jim miklaszewski live from the pentagon. you've been covering this all night. let's tee ake it from the top. what happened? >> reporter: what happened was that south korea had this planned military exercise and they informed the koreans of the date and sxaexact time when the exercise would begin as required. as soon as they started firing their artillery at a range on this island off the west coast of the korean peninsula, north korea opened up with about a three hour barrage of more than 100 artillery shells said to have struck the island killing two mort korean marines, injuring about a half dozen or more others. and including some civilians. now, the immediate response from south korea was to turn some of hair guns toward the north koreans and to launch f-16 fighter jets flew over the cher

but did not open pir on the north core reanswer. and initially the south koreans had claimed there were heavy north korean casualty, but no way to prove that. the immediate reaction from the u.s. military quite frankly was to do nothing. to consult with the south koreans so what they were doing, but there was fear that if the u.s. would strike an aggressive posture, that would send the wrong signal to the north koreans at the time. that might be miss interpreted and according to u.s. military officials here, the last thing anybody wants as of today now particularly since the shooting has stopped issen escalate. >> only last march there was the north korean sinking of a south korean ship and no punishment. account sought coth koreans aff stand by and do nothing? >> reporter: it's a difficult political situation, but it really is considered militarily

too high a price to pay for actions like this. the only course really that the south koreans have taken so far is to end some of their cooperative agreements, trade and aid with the north koreans, which apparently is only exacerbated or inflamed the situation to some extent. but, again, as of now, the direction of the -- from the u.s. military officials we're talking to and, frankly, the obama administration is to work through the u.n., work the diplomatic channels, try to keep tensions stamped down for the time being until perhaps some longer term solution can be found. but quite frankly, all-out war is not one of those options right now. >> jim miklaszewski in the hot seat at the pentagon. thank you very much. and with us now, richard haass president of the council on foreign relations. you know this part of the world well. you were in the state department in the white house having to deal with the north. this is the most provocative

act, though, this is an unprovoked attack on civilians in south korea. and close enough to the economic hub of south korea. only some 75 miles away. this is really something that needs to be responded to. >> i tend to agree. it's quite ironic, the south koreans notified the north of the exercise, that's a confidence building measure. it's designed to make sure that the other side doesn't mistake what is an exercise for something real. so what does south korea get in return? it gets attacked. it's not something i think politically untenable for the south not to respond. i think at some point the south needs to respond proportionally and carefully, but needs to respond to the north, you don't want to encourage this sort of behavior, you don't want to send the message that anything the north does is somehow acceptable because one day the north will cross a line and then we really will be off to the races. >> and here we're dealing with a succession in play. we don't know -- they were always unpredictable, but we

don't know who is in charge, whether the young son is flexing his muscles. there's a lot of unknowns here as to what pyongyang's respond would be depending on what seoul does. >> this is the most opaque country in the world as you know. it's impossible to predict. we don't know why this happened. we don't know the decision making process. you don't know as you pointed out correctly what would happen if the south retaliated. that tends to immobilize outsiders and you tend to go back to riritual lisistritualise for the best. north korea is committed to their nuclear program and they're aggressive towardses their own people and their neighbor and china is either unable or unwilling to control them. this is an untenable situation.

>> in beijing today, the administration's top diplomat on all of this was talking to the chinese. clearly the chinese are the key people with leverage here. he was dispatched ironically because over the weekend ors last couple of days the administration learned about how much the north had advanced out uranium enrichment, so he quickly went to the region. this is what bosworth had to say today. >> the u.s. strongly condemns thissing a agrees and we stand firmly with our allies. this subject did of course come up in my meetings with the chinese ministry of foreign affairs and i think we both share a view that such conflict is very undesirable and i expressed to them the desire and restraint be exercised on all sides and i think we agree on that about. >> the chinese have a leverage. back in march, they tried to avoid any responsibility.

even though the attack on the ship was clearly a violation of the 1953 even though there was proof at the time, now there is no qui. so will the chinese be pressured, can they be pressured into doing something, going in and saying cut it out? >> in my experience, the chinese are reluctant to use much less all of the leverage that they have. they are scared of triggering the collapse of north korea. they don't want to see a wave millions of r s rev few refugee. china even though it's frustrated with north korea is essentially a country that prefers s a verse of the stat cs

company. so we can't count on them. >> so if the chinese complaint be counted on to be north core has proven it's ineffective. what the o are the options? >> south korea has removed any of the normalization merv meas. i think you need to retaliate and you need to be prepared for something bigger and you need to have very clear messages to north korea. if they for example continue to do things like that, it will be retaliated against. if they take any of their nuclear capabilities and transfer help to iran or any terrorist groups, we out to be clear that that would lead to our taking extraordinary military action, perhaps seeking regime change. i think the united states immediates to take a much tougher line with north korea and stop imagining that we're

somehow going to resume these negotiations that are in turn going lead to north korea's denuclearization. it's simply not in the cards. >> let me quickly turn to afghanistan. the "new york times" had an extraordinary story today that in fact that the afghans have been negotiating with a fake taliban leader, that we gave him a local lot of money and that he wasn't the taliban leader that we not thougthought he was ho. how does it this happen? >> it's a peter sellers moment. and as you are refer, we had that awful incident where we had this person who we thought was an agent helping us, instead he turned on us and killed the central members of the cia's afghanistan team. so we cleary have a series of

intelligence problems if you want to call them, so be it, where we're not gr at figures out who is legit and who is not. he also have to be careful not to get so anxious that we in thi way look past warning signals. >> good advice. thanks so much, richard. and turning now from foreign crises to domestic politics. sar sarah palin's book is on sale today. is she running for the republican nomination some national political columnist for new york magazine joins me now. hey, john, the book. she does settle some scores here. she goes after the president, the first lady, hillary clinton. are you surprised at how tough she is in this book? >> i'm not surprised at all. she's a tough lady. and she's also a little bit of a thin skinned lady. she's taken the opportunity in the past to settle some scores.

in her first book, she did that. and now she's decided to do it again. she doesn't suffer criticism happily. and she's someone who over the course of last year on her facebook and twitter feeds has been harsh towards people that she regards her political rivals or enemies. >> here she was with sean hannity last night. let's watch. >> if there is no one whom i feel is in a position to be able to beat barack obama and if i feel that i am the candidate who can beat barack obama, i will run. >> what is your thinking now? is this just part of the publicity, the money, the book tour, the tlc series, or has she really got the bug? >> i'm not so sure. it could be that's a false binary. she is doing i think what every serious presidential candidate who might -- shers potential

does. she's keeping the option very much open. this is not the first part of the strategy. her fund raising. they has told a number of reporters that she's weighing this, she's deliberating on it. it is the right strategy for her to pursue if all she wants to do is make money, but it's also right strategy for her to pursue if she wants to run for president. i think the only one who really knows what's in his heart besides her is her husband, todd. but this is someone who looks like they're getting themselves in the position to make an incredible run no president. >> and she led all of theconten she would lose to barack obama. of course this is a fictional match up. in the book, she goes after hillary clinton. in the past she says she admires

hillary clinton and this time she says i admire her, but she came across then in '92 as someone frozen in an '60s bra burning militancy. she told thaws she could have stayed home and baked cookies and had tea, but preferred to pursue a serious career. well, hillary, many of us wanted to say at the time some of us like to bake cookie, some of us also think we can do that and still have successful came rears and mofs don't think we have to run down stay at home moms in order to make us feel good about our choices. i happen to be there in chicago on that day before the illinois primary back in 1992 and it was an answer actually to our question that hillary clinton said when asked about the brewing controversy over her work for the rose law firm in little rock about staying home and baking cookies. it's not really what she meant. she fixed it about a half hour later by coming out, but it became indelibly linked and now sarah palin chooses to go after that hillary clinton rather than

the several other serial hillary clintons we've seen since. >> and you know that regardless of what hillary clinton meant precisely that day, that became a sort of totem of conservative critics of hillary clinton throughout the 1990s. it is i think interesting to see sarah palin revert to go that stereotype of hillary clinton. seems like a very calculated attempt to appeal to a certain kind of conservative who still has the kind of image of hillary clinton as a '60s lefty memphis, not the image of hillary clinton that a lot of republicans even admire today as sort of the tough secretary of state, potential secretary of defense, that kind of image that hillary clinton has worked so hard to project. it's interesting to see her going back to that older image to appeal to that constituency, the old hillary hater constituency. >> and we saw sarah palin as a mom in the audience for bristol watching the competition, she does the same thing with

we're talking about april and westminster abbey. >> reporter: really no surprises. it's a dark and wet night, but the queen is obviously one very happy royal queen. obviously now the date has been set. this is when the real work kicks off. and i think everybody really wants to know now what is the dress going to be like, who will do the makeup, guest list. there's all of that now to come. but what's really interesting is that everybody thought the wedding would be high summer. of course royal engagements never really last that long. once you get that ring on your finger, you have a kim of months. >> and of course westminster abbye, it's not st. paul's where william' mother was famously married. westminster is a smaller venue. >> reporter: slightly smaller,

the white house is hoping that they can repair relations, but many are intensely plus freighted with the white house. we have to see concrete policies that will help grow business because everyone's goal it s. to grow jobs. this isn't hocus -pocus. that's pretty tough language from a business round table anonymously as it is. why so much frustration? >> what surpriseded me the most was that the business round table is actually on the record. there are a lot of people who aren't, but that's an example of just how anxious they are to get

the message through to the white house. the from yustration stems from several different things ranging from a feeling that the white house really doesn't understand the dilemmas and the daily complexities that big business faces. and a lot of frustration with all of the attacks that took place on various sectors moving from -- it started with the financials, it moves to the health insurer, it went to the automakers and ended up with bp. finally there was a sense of, my gosh, i might next. so there are lots and lots of complaints that you could pick up out of the business community and they're really looking for the white house to turn the page on this and work with them so that we can get this economic recovery going. >> let me play devil's advocate here if a moment because if you're part of the liberal wing of the democratic party, most clearly nancy pelosi and the remaining members of congress

typify that, they through it that big business has gotten everything they wanted, the bailout, the auto industry back on its feet, financial services community back oits feet, the people in the white house have been too favorable to business. that's what part of the democratic base has been complaining about. so how does the president win? >> it is very much a tight rope. it is an excellent point. it isn't just the liberals on the outside who feel that way. the people inside the white house feel that way. they took a lot of political hits to pass that legislation to help certain sectors and the economy as a whole. and some of those votes and some of those proposals cost them seats. and so there is a fair amount of puzzlement and resentment around white house folks with b. why the business community doesn't give them a break. what's happening now i think is that there's a sense of we got to get this recovery moving faster than it is right now. and there are some things that business community believes

speak to the workers any minute now and we will bring that to you live when it happens. savannah guthrie is live in washington. let's talk about the president's trip. he's with the vice president. this is a very important focus and they codo think they have a request n good news story. >> they think they have two good stories. here's an example where the federal sbintervention is payin dividends. upwards of 3500 jobs saved in kokomo alone, so they say they feel like this is just one example of how the auto restructuring has worked. and the other is that this town has gotten about i think $400 billion in recovery act funds and they really credit the mayor with using those funds to maximum effect to revitalize parts of this community. this town, the peak of the recession, had over 20% unemployment. it's now down to 12% which

needless to say is not ideal, but they say this is obviously an example of progress. and then the other point i make about this whole trip, andrea, and you'll see some pictures coming into the newsroom pretty soon here, is the president's also talked about how he wants to reconnect with the american people. and how he felt he lost some of that connection. he just did something that i'm told was totally spontaneous having seen some gram or school kids standing outside a schoolhouse having seen on his way to lunch. on the way back said let's jump out of the car, the kids went wild, a crazy screaming scene. stressful to see krfoto sefor s. >> there's a new outrage to the beach community and we also hear that david axelrod is axle rating the anticipated departure, moved back to chicago to focus on 2012. do you read anything into the

timing of this? so or is this david wanting to get home to his family? have. >> having talked to several folk, i think it's a case where axelrod who always said he would leave early spring took a look and said i need time to decompress before i dive head long back into the campaign. and so it's my understanding that that really is what's going on here. it's not like he's being ushered out more quickly. everybody knew this was going to happen. everybody knew plouffe would come in. i saw him yesterday, so perhaps he's already working a little bit. >> thank you very much. we'll of course bring the president's speech when they start there in indiana. we look forward it that. the president and the vice president on the road again today. and the white house is going to be awarding the presidential medal of freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, to a man it calls an american hero and a

giant of a civil rights movement. john lewis. he was part of the first lunch counter demonstrations and first freedom rides. he's probably best known for leading the voting rights march from selma to montgomery in 1965. it ended of course with the brutal bloody sunday attacks on that bridge. not to mention the fact that he has represented the city of atlanta in congress for the past 23 years. and was at the poor people's march and the great i have a dream speech. all of that. what a life. condition lewis, congratulations. it's my first chance to say well done, congratulations on the medal of freedom. your reflections on receiving this honor. >> well, thank you sooch. thank you for your words of congratulations. thank you for having me. i was so delighted and so pleased when the president called me last thursday and told me that i would be receiving the metal of freedom and he kept

talking about the things i've done and tried to do. and i said, mr. president, you need to stop. stop now. if you continue to talk, i'm going to cry. it isn't take much for me to cry sometimes and her very warm words and he sort of said go ahead and cry. but do i feel it's not just an honor for me, but an honor for those countless individuals that did participate in the sit-in, that did participate on the freedom ride and those that march and those that didn't make it, those that not only were jailed, about but those that d. so i willing accepting this medal on behalf of so many other people. >> most recently, we saw you in your role as a friend charlie rangel. it was a very sad day for a lot of us watching and you stood up just to give testimony to his

service and to all he's done in the past. what should happen now, what kind of punishment should the full house agree to? >> well, it is left up to the house and it is my hope that the house would really consider the record, the long history of service to this man. you're right, i stated i didn't know the facts in the case, but i wanted to say that mr. rangel, who i've known for almost 50 years, served in korea, came home, completed his education, got a law degree, and served the city of new york, the state of new york, and serving in congress now for 40 years. he's a wonderful beautiful human being and i just wanted the committee and i want the house to just thank him for the contribution he's made to our country. >> there's going to be a big transition obviously in january. you will become a part of the minority. nancy pelosi leaving the caucus.

what role do you think the democrats in congress should play? should they go along with the president if he feels on some 14us that he needs to work with the prps and try to reach out toward the center, or do you think that this is a time where the base really needs to get tougher and fight against the republican majority? >> as democrats, we must stand out. we must stand out and be prepared to fight for what we believe in. we must speak up, we must speak out. we must show nothing shorter of raw courage. in the areas where we can cooperate and move in a bipartisan fashion, working with the president, working with the republican for the good of the country, we must do just that. >> and what happens when the president will look at these polls as will david plouffe coming in to the white house and what they see in the most recent analysis is that it isn't that they didn't -- it's partly that they didn't get enough votes

clearly from the base, the democratic base from young people, from minority, but it's largely the moderates, the independents and moderates who stayed home. they need to be recaptured. so logically the white house advisers will say you've got to move toward the middle the way bill clinton did in 1994. what if barack obama chooses that same course, will nancy pelosi and all the rest of you guys fight them? >> i think we have to stand up for what we believe in. the president is right, we stand with him and we fight with him. but we cannot give up on our core principals. we've got to do much more to organize our base and mobilize our base. it's not just independents and pot rats that didn't turn out. but many minorities and many young people didn't turn out. and we got to be prepared to go all out to inspire people to turn out the same way they turned out in 2008. >> congressman john lewis, again, our congratulations. we very much look forward to the

itself, explosive material. there are a number of materials which in fact the dogs are trained to alert on. obviously the dog did did it. now wrks that said, these dogs are extremely effective in what they do. that doesn't always mean they're 100% correct. >> it could be a false positive, of course. and we understand that we should advise people at logan international that the cargo facility that they're checking is about a mile from the passenger terminal and that none of the passenger flights that we know of, no commercial flights, have been interrupted at all. mark, bear with me now. the state police troopers are responding, the response prompted by the police dog alerting to the package. location as we've pointed out not near any passenger terminals. state police xrks ploes sif ordinance preparing to further investigate us a pointed out. trooperses have evacuated the area, set up a secure perimeter. firefighters are also on the

party should drive government policy. here now, steve mcmahon and susan malina rcht i. so this is an even divided situation and foretells a lot of trouble for the did thattic minority in congress. as well for the republican majority. how do the democrats handle the split? >> the public still wants president obama to lead. they obviously have some regard for the tea party and very low regard for the republicans who are now running the house of representatives. so i do think it's a mixed signal, but one thing that's for sure, john boehner and the crowd that has taken over the house does not have the confidence of the american public. >> susan, what about that? how does john boehner and the majority republicans handle this very strong division within the republican party? >> well, the republicans aren't in charge get, so i think a lot of what people are saying with regard to their polling, with regard to gop congressional

leaders, it might be a reflection to leaders of the past, not the leaders of the future and what condition pjohn others have put forward. the agenda take the tea party are nding on and the administration is pretty much this line. i remember times when we really were that stort of internal firing squad. as long as we concentrate on the issues important to the tea part, that were reflected in the last election that produced a majority for the republicans, that have to do with reducing the deficit, cutting taxes, getting government in terms of an overreach out of people's lives, i think that's not going to be any kind of division. it's a fine line to walk, but if we walk that line together, i think we'll be very successful. >> speaking of a fine line to walk, sarah palin. she's out with a book today. and let's take a little look -- a peek not only at the book, but

there are two things we're going to talk about. first, of course, the president hasn't pardoned a real life human being. but as is tradition, the president is going to pardon two turkeys tomorrow. i believe it's in the rose garden, which is the tradition. two turkeys that don't get the axe and meet the carving table on thanksgiving day. and the other thing we're going to be talking about is tomorrow is supposed to be opt out day. this day, this sort of organic protest against the tsa security screening proceed yours that people find invasive and humiliating and uncomfortable, and personally speaking, andrea, i hope they don't do it. could you imagine air travel if they do it? >> yeah, i've got two figlights tomorrow, and i'm not going to express an opinion just to say i hope things move smoothly. the turkeys we are told by the new york post are named apple and cider.
