that federal agents and bomb squads are investigating. the area has been evacuated. but right now the rest of that airport is operating normally. no passenger traffic has been affected by this. the delta cargo building is about a mile away from the passenger gates. we'll continue to follow the developments and bring you any news from boston on this. and the "news nation" is also following the threat of a new military strike from north korea against its southern neighbor. a deadly exchange of artillery fire with south korea has left two south korean soldiers dead and more than a dozen civilians injured. it's one of the worst attacked on south korean civilians since the korean war. but north korea says more attacks are ahead if south korea violates their disputed sea border. south korea's president says he will unleash, quote, enormous retaliation should the north attack again. jim miklaszewski joins us live from the pentagon. obviously this is far beyond

rhetoric. it has moved to action. what is expected next? >> this battle has been going on for some time. in march the north koreans torpedoed a patrol boat killing 40 south korean sailors. a moment ago the spokesman said everyone was stunned by this artillery attack against the south korean island off the west coast of the korean peninsula. but so far it appears the u.s. is trying to work the diplomatic path particularly through china in an effort to get china to exert more pressure. china was saying they found this attack today destabilizing the entire region. whether china will back that up with some action is not only a

question, but probably doubtful, tamron. >> mik, thank you very much. and this latest conflict is drawing a verbal fire storm from world leaders condemning north korea's, quote, belligerent action. request white house is joining the likes of russia and china in voicing its concern. i'm joined now by andrea mitchell. andrea, we heard mik say the u.s. somehow wants to get china involved in this. the likelihood there? >> well, it's very problematic. stephen bosworth, the diplomat is trying to get the chinese engaged. they have not in the past. in march they did not. they found no evidence. this is undisputable that the north koreans launched this. the question is what will south korea do. do they feel they need to take some sort of military action?

and if not, will china put pressure on pyongyang? and the other bigamistry is why did north korea do this? >> and we have 29,000 usz troops stationed in the region in south korea. the president recently visiting with some of those on veterans day. we heard mik say this could destabilize the region. what would it mean for our troops in south korea? >> we know they have 8 to 10 or 11 bombs already. new evidence that they have a very advancedn't plant. they showed him what he had. it wasn't a real inspection but he had the chance to tour the facility. so they are showing off and flexing their muscles. the backdrop is a transition from kim jong-il to his son. this is probably the most dangerous place in the world.

administration says they are making some ever so slight changes. st number of people chosen at random for pat downs is being reduced and screeners are told to be more sensitive. the government is also getting more details on how many pangs are being patted down. it says less than 3% receive the standard pat down and a much smaller number get the more intrusive search if they set off the body scanners. 99% of people agree to go through the scanners. they are also releasing a public service announcement. >> hello. i'm tsa ad administrator john pistol. if you are directed to pass through an ait, you may opt out. if you choose opt out, you will receive a thorough pat down by someone of the same gender. >> a new "washington post" abc news poll shows most people are,

in fact, in favor of these body scannered. 64% of them support it. 32% oppose. but when it comes to the enhanced pat downs, people are more reluctant. people say they're not justified, 48% think they are justified. right now a group of new jersey lawmakers is grand demanding congress review the controversial procedures. you see the poll numbers that 64% support these body scanners. is this a smul number of angry people making a lot of noise? >> in a post 9/11 world, security is our number one priority. but most americans are now encountering these invasive body scanners are becoming more threatened by how invasive they are. 68 scanners were deployed in the airports. here in jfk laguardia there's been horrifying reports of some of these people going through.

i am happy the government is actually softeninging their position and taking another look at it. we certainly want to keep safe. i have not experienced it yet, but i heard from three constituents lately. someone is traveling to florida. she had a breast biopsy. she's afraid to go through the body scanner because of the increased radiation as a potential cancer patient and does not want to receive a pat down because of the wounds. >> that's debatable. there's a physicist that says the number is 20 times more than that. we have support from a congressman on the central intelligence committee in washington looking at this. we are asking the government to take a step back and review that there is no potential harm from the radioactive machines. >> if you eliminate body scanners, it leaves you with

perhaps pat downs. you think of what happened around christmas, the so-called underwear bomber. without a body scanner you would not be able to detect the substance, the explosive hidden in his clothing. you need these pat downs. >> there needs to be a balance. i'm not part of the homeland security. but at least they are listening to find a balance to strike the balance to make sure we go through without invading. we heard there was a victim with cancer. a bladder victim. and his medical device burst. your hearing stories from the senior citizens potlation. from the young child strip down. >> the father took his shirt off for him. but according to the numbers out there, they've received about 700 complaints out of 28 millionaire line passengers. i don't want to minimize it. the poor man, the cancer survivor. that is awful and other stories.

that's good news. that's real money, $800 million. the mayor has a big grin on his face. he's pretty happy about that. over the next few years folks here expect to manufacture more transmissions than ever before. and as a result, hundreds of workers are back on the job. jeremy said we're going to be hiring more. this includes -- this includes -- i'm going to name a couple people just to embarrass them a little bit. where is sharon? is sharon here? right here. sharon -- sharon lost her job of 20 years at a paper mill. she was only able to find work that paid her far less than her old job until she was hired by

chrysler. now she is doing a great job right here at chrysler. we're proud of you. jim ferod is here. where is jim? jim is right next to her. jim worked for chrysler for a decade, right? then he lost his job when the plant he worked at in new castle shut down. and over the next few years, he could only find intermittent work on and off. it wasn't until after restructuring that he was able to have a job he could count on. he's back at work for more than a year doing outstanding jobs making products here at chrysler. at a plant down the road, workers are manufacturing parts for hybrid vehicles.

that's already led to dozens of jobs and will lead to nearly 200 over the next few years. a few miles outside of kokomo, a company is going to be hire 900 workers, taking over a plant that had to shut down a few years ago. so a factory that was empty and dark will come back to life. when people have a paycheck, they can go to the store. they're able to spend. that helps the economy grow. so we're seeing a revival with new businesses opening downtown. so for anybody who says our country's best days are behind us anybody who would doubt our prospects for the futures. anybody who doesn't believe in the midwest. anybody who doesn't believe in manufacturing, have them come to kokomo. come here. >> president obama giving a rousing speech in kokomo, indiana. alongside the president is vice

president joe biden. they're at this chrysler plant. you hear the president passionately say you can't bet against the american auto industry. he's trying to use the auto industry as an example of the recovery that is happening. it is happening slowly. the president believes it is happening. we're going to continue to watch these remarks. but i have to update you on this breaking situation from boston logan airport. delta airlines says the tsa is conducting a routine exercise at the boston cargo facility. a package was identified by one of the canines as suspicious. the area has been evacuated, cleared if you will. and delta is cooperating with authorities to assess this package. there are reports it was addressed from nigeria. we're continuing to watch this developing news from boston. chrysler plant in that city saying the story of that plant in central indiana represents the hope and confidence of a better economy. even though millions are still unemployed. just two monthses ago she gave president obama an earful a month ago at a cnbc town hall meeting telling the president she was tired and upset about waiting for the change promised. now velma hart has become a casualty of the struggling economy. she was laid off from her job as chief financial officer for a nonprofit group that provides services for veterans. velma joins me now from our cnbc studio. thank you for your time. >> thank you. >> the president is speaking now, as i mentioned. he's in indiana saying these are examples or this plant is an example the economy is getting better. here now you have have been laid off from your job.

how do you feel about this president and the way the administration is handling the recovery? >> i don't think so my opinion about the president changed based on my condition. it's unique to me. it just happened to be a shared position with millions of americans. for me personally i think i'm a little disappointed for where i am, but i understand that some difficult decisions have to be made. and i'm trusting my former employer made what was a difficult decision. >> the executive director said the decision to lay you auz was pure lay business move. had nothing to do with your work and the job you were v you were performing. the unemployment rate was 9.6. now you're back in the game where people have been looking for days, week, months -- >> years. >> i don't have to tell your situation. you know it.

how do you feel. >> well, i'm not excited about it. certainly i'm a little anxious, like most people in my position would be. i still consider myself enormously blessed. i'm in a much better position than more than half of the un unemployed people. and the unemployment rate is not going up. it's remaining stagnant. which means something good is happening. i'm a realist. i'm data driven. all the pundits tell us the economy is improving. >> everyone knows you're a president obama supporter. you said you were exhausted of defending him. do you still feel you're in the position to defend your belief that this administration will turn things around? >> there's no question the opposition to this president is overwhelming. do i think i will have to defend

him? always. or anyone who supports his agenda and the plan for the country. i just think that's a reality because the opposition is overwhelming. >> everybody has an opinion. what do you believe or hope to see from this administration next? and as you point out, you're one of 14 million people now out of work. >> what i'm really hoping for post midterm election is much of what i've been saying the last several weeks. i'm hoping everybody will come together. it's not just the president. it's a democracy for a reason. there are some 500 government employees and elected bodies that make up our congress in addition to the president who need to work together and work for the good of this country and to help people like me. i'm enormously blessed. by comparison, i'm blessed. but the focus has been off for quite a while. it needs to get on track.

is swindled by an afghan war lord. it's a very difficult environment. it's really an embarrassment for the afghan political leadership who are supposed to have a better hand ob who these people are. we also have to sort these people out. it's very important that we continue to probe the taliban. and try to peel portions of the orgs off. >> you have the pentagon spokesperson saying he doesn't know if the story is true, but listen to the details that this person, supposed to be number two taliban official, wouldn't they have a photograph, some intelligence before having high level or secret conversations with this individual? >> well, i'm not sure he met with the president. if he had gotten all the way up to the president, this would be a major mistake on the part of the officials in charge of that.

but they really need to know who they're dealing with and continue this initiative to find out who these people are and to continue the dialogue. >> michael sheehan, thank you very much. nbc news terror analyst. thank you, michael. right now -- a deadly mix of snow and freezing temperatures cripples travel in the northwest. in illinois a tornado lifts a school bus right off the road and leaves tens of thousands of people without power. how this wicked storm system could affect holiday travel now on "news nation." and all of this couldn't come at a worse time as millions of americans get ready to travel for the thanksgiving holiday. msnbc's thomas roberts is here with a closer look at what travelers are facing. not good. >> not really a good start, tamron. it began on monday in the upper midwest. severe storms spawned as many as seven tornados in illinois and wisconsin. take a look at this funnel cloud captured on cell phone video near rockford, illinois.

a tornado there is a rare event this time of year. it struck without warning at 3:00 p.m. local time on monday. officials say five kids and the bus driver were injured. but fortunately none of the injuries are said to be serious. >> picked the bus up and, i don't know if it went over trees or just around them, and then rolled the bus over. >> the vinyl storms also knocked down trees and power lines, damaged homes in northern illinois and southern wisconsin. it's estimated 40,000 customers lost power in illinois. out west the problem is heavy snow in washington state, oregon, north california and elsewhere. snowfall topped one foot in some areas, making travel extremely difficult. the snow knocking down trees and power. and a boeing 747 karr go plane skidded off the runway on monday. nobody was injured. and one place with snow was welcome, they say bring it on, is vale, colorado, where this is a big weekend at the popular resort that caters to the rich

and the famous. you know beaver creek is not too far away from vale. they're like side by side. >> it's on my bucket list. >> thanks for the recommendation. let's get the latest on the the weather troubles across the country. carl parker joins us live from the weather headquarters in atlanta. what has gotten your attention to warn folk who is are traveling? >> it has a trailing front with mostly lighter rain. there could be additional severe weather in the south, but not a lot of it today. we have a huge very intense storm that's come into the west. along with that very heavy snow and a tremendous amount of wind as well. blizzard warnings are now up, all up and down the i-15 corridor. i-80 as well. i-84 and 70. we have a report of winds gusting 53 miles an hour in salt lake city. that's enough wind to knock down

power lines and that sort of thing. let alone create all kinds of problems on the roads. the snow is heaviest now back down to reno as well. very difficult travel across the midwest today. that will linger to early tomorrow on the backside of the storm. part of it comes to the middle of the country. could be severe weather in the midsouth. and tomorrow wet weather in chicago and also a wintery mix in minneapolis. could be delays at those two airports. then on turkey day we have showers in ohio. getting down to the mid south we find a wet east coast on black friday. tamron? >> carl, thank you. and you may want to take time out this holiday weekend to take a close look at your bank statement if you haven't done so lately. some people are paying higher fees than ever despite laws designed to protect you, the consumer. lisa myers is live with more. >> hey, tamron. the government recently cracked

down on banks imposing tough new regulations, limiting what they could charge for credit cards and overdrafts. are consumers paying lower fees now? in many cases, no. banks found new ways to rake in money. what put patty over the edge is when her son, a college student, was charged $2 just to check his account balance before he withdrew money from his bank's atm. >> so to try to be a responsible banking participant, they penalize you for $2. that's wrong. >> when he used another bank's atm he sometimes used $8 to get $40 out in cash. >> $2.95, $2.50. $2. >> it's insane. >> the bank recently at lly add monthly fee of $8.95 for what had been called totally free

checking. >> now you tell your children about a bank. >> a recent survey found fees have gone up across the board this year. >> fee increases on everything from monthly service charges to overdraft fees. even atm fees. >> the number of americans enjoying free checking has dropped from 76% to 65%. and if you want an account that pays interest, the average minimum balance required to avoid fees has soared. from $511 to $3883. some consumers not watching their statements closely have learned the hard way. barbara nelson was shocked to discover she'd been charged $6 to $12 a month by her bank jpmorgan chase because she didn't use her debit card enough. basically an inactivity fee.

>> they're charging me for not spending my own money. >> reporter: eventually mnts of service fees drained her account, triggering an overdraft fee. she paid $118 in fees on an account she didn't use once thissee. >> the banks are making huge profits off small potatoes. hundreds of millions of small potatoes like me. >> chase spokesman said we encourage our customers to check their statements every month. the banks argue they're merely charging customers for the services they use. and with increased regulation, scott talbott says the banks costs have gone up, necessitating higher fees. what do you say to consumers who feel they're being gouged by their banks? >> one, shop around. two, understand your contract

pennsylvania are outraged after a school bus driver took an unscheduled detour, dropping their kids off at a police station, instead of dropping them off at home. the bus driver said he made the pit stop because the kids, all in junior high, were misbehav r misbehaving. some chose to get off the bus and walk home. many of them, more than two miles away. and one student's mother says they should not have been allowed to walk. >> they should have been forced to stay on that bus or kept at that police station. and every parent was called. >> so the school district says the disruptive students will face disciplinary action, but what about the bus driver? should he be penalized for the disciplinary detour to the police station? what does your gut tell you?
