we begin this morning with a pledge to protect. the united states is making that promise to south korea, a day after the north caused what the u.n. secretary-general called one of the quote gravest incidents since the end of the cold war. >> reporter: new this morning we're learning that south korea tv reports the burned bodies of two male construction workers, civilians have been found on that south korean island that was attacked. also this morning, japan's foreign minister is saying it will be difficult if not impossible, they believe, to restart six-party talks involving north korea after what the u.n. secretary-general is calling the worst attack since the truce in that war in 1953. we now know south korea this

morning is promising massive retaliation if, in fact, there is another strike. the north says there will be more strikes if the south crosses its border. with the situation escalating, president obama is promising the u.s. will use their airplanes moving into the direction of the korean peninsula. many americans are left wondering if yesterday's flare up is an isolated incident or the first step towards a full blown outbreak. >> i think everyone is trying to keep it from escalating, south korea was performing a drill. the north koreans knew the drill was taking place. it was not a provocative act. it happens very frequently. the u.s. and south koreans drill together. the north koreans are clearly

creating a series of provocations. it's very dangerous. we need to get back to negotiations and talks but what we also need is for china which is a leader in the process of the six-party talks and north korea's only remaining ally to say to the north koreans enough is enough. the chinese want to take a neutral position, i understand that. they want to act as some kind of honest broker so to speak in the six-party talk. there's notion nesty here when you're putting people's lives at risk and targeting civilian larns. >> lean forward with keith olbermann each night at 8:00 eastern. it's the place for politics. today is the day many of you will head to your thanksgiving holiday destination. the hope that all will go smoothly. the question remains will the uproar over invasive pat downs wreak havoc for travellers.

kristen dahlgren reports from chicago. good morning? >> reporter: good morning, lynn. it's estimated 1.8 million travellers will make their way through chicago o'hare this week and travel experts say if this opt-out movement catches on today it could cause chaos across the country. for many on the way to grandma's this year is a detour, attract through the debate. body showing scanners or pat downs that leave nothing to the imagination. most are okay with the additional screening. >> the world we live in, so i rather be safe than sorry. >> reporter: but a loosely organized movement encouraging passengers to opt-out of the scanners forcing the tsa to do more pat downs could jam up the system. >> i want to get attention and to educate folks. >> reporter: for the government that has agreed to do fewer random pat downs the point remains from the shoe bomber to the alleged underwear bomber and

recent attempts to hide bombs in air cargo planes are still a target. a protest will punish passengers. >> my concern is these people who opt-out will cause other people who want to get home to miss they're flights. >> reporter: home for the holidays for many americans means hitting the roads. while derives may avoid getting up close and personal with the tsa -- snowboard i have a lot of personal space issues so i would really dread having to get patted down. >> reporter: few holiday trips will be without lines. from traffic jams to baggage check, and now the fine one between security and privacy. those body scan machines are used at seven airports. since november 1st less than 3% of passengers have been subjected to those pat downs. lynn? >> kristen dahlgren, thanks so much. that's your "first look" at some

of the other news going on. an ohio woman stock up for the winter when she stole a fur coat. she rolled the coat into a ball and slipped it up her dress aunt down the leggings while two other people distracted store employees. south carolina family is dealing with a real life medical mystery. this cat scan shows an open safety pin lodged in a 6-year-old's sinus cavity which she stuck up there as a toddler. five years of headaches, nose bleeds and ear infections were misdiagnosed as allergies. ine oregon steady snowfall create apd winter wonderland at the beach. the first of its kind and the kind of surf and snow is rarely seen in oregon's coast. so a day off of school means

snowmen at the beach. in north dakota a sun dog flare brightened the fargo sky. the halo appears as a spectrum of light on one or both sides of the sun. this rare sight appeared after a foot of snow fell on the area. for a look at your national weather we turn once again to bill karins. all those travel plans. >> big day. >> mucked up by the snow up there. >> yeah. the northern plains is the only real tricky spot. we have some amazing stories yesterday from the west that's where the huge winter storm was. salt lake city, utah they don't get a lot of snow in november. this was a blizzard. the snow was flying sideways. four inches of snow in one hour and that was it. it was a hit-and-run snowstorm for salt lake city and very cold there today. now the only problems on the east coast today is in new england with the wind and this is strong enough, these gusts to cause some airport delays during the day today.

really primarily from new york city northward. skies are crystal clear. bright. sunny. much cooler than yesterday in the 40s. there's still possible airport delays. high volume and windy conditions in new england. from logan down to providence and hartford and new york airports we'll see some problems because of the high volume and the wind. now the other issue, that storm i just showed you that was in salt lake city, now heading for the northern plains. anybody traveling from st. louis to chicago primarily rain problems four. you can see the green here on the map. that's the rain. it's raining pretty good in st. louis. some pink showing up. it's cold enough for mixed precip. be careful driving this morning. interstate 70 and 44 if you're heading out of arkansas northwards. temperatures are very cold. for this time year this is ridiculous on the west coast. seattle this morning is at 15 degrees. it just doesn't happen that often.

montana is at minus 8. so very brutal conditions for traveling in areas of utah because of the snow last night and the temperatures. montana, all through the rockies. it's really bad. the storm will head up here to northern plains. every where in white is under a winter weather advisory. you'll see a little bit of snow, freezing rain or possibility of a mixture of the two. minneapolis is going to get a wintry mix, possible arraignment delays there. be careful driving around duluth. north dakota could end up with six inches of snow. if there's a travel trouble spot from st. louis to be chicago and back up here in the northern plains and we'll update the airports a little later once they open up here and tell us just how bad they will be. >> thanks so much. also coming up a bleak job forecasts a bright forecast for online spending and which beatle song sold the most on itunes. your "first look" at your business headlines is straight ahead. coming up a major upset in college hoops.

welcome back to "first look". i'm lynn berry. here are some of the top stories making news this morning. just three days after senate republicans voted to support a two year ban on earmarks, the chamber's number two republican appears to have backed out on his promise. last friday arizona senator in jon kyl stirred funds to his state. they insist it's not an earmark but critics say it meets the definition of an earmark. a california man has pleaded not guilty to running a makeshift bomb factory out of his house where prosecutors say they found the largest cache of home made explosives in u.s. history. it's unclear what the man intended to do with the explosives. he was charged with robbing two banks also. new zealand police say all

29 workers missing in a coal mine since an explosion last friday are likely dead after a second blast today that no one could have survived. teachers are often accused of having eyes in the back of their heads but one new york university professor is coming stunningly close. he'll have a tiny camera surgically implanted in the back of his skull for one year all in the name of performance art. now here's your "first look" at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow dropped 142 points yesterday. the s&p lost 17 points. the nasdaq shot down 37. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo the nikkei fell 85 points but in hong kong, the hang seng rose 127. so much for a quiet week of holiday trading. u.s. markets tumbled yesterday in response to rising global tensions. that unexpected exchange of fire between north and south korea

fuelled fears as investors were already on edge about the possible spread of ireland's debt crisis. wall street's volatility index or fear factor speck the most in three months. slumping sales of previously owned homes overshadowed the government's upbeat news that the economy grew faster than previously thought last quarter and that corporate profits are at an all time high. more fuel for the day's dismal tone came from the fed's revised economic forecast predicting unemployment will remain 9% next year and will probably stay high for years to come. energy stocks led the day's declines on the s&p while chevron and exxonmobil losses were a significant drag on the dow. comscore raised their estimate for holiday spending calling for 11% growth over last year. a california jury has ordered europe's top software

uconn pulled off the first major upset of the season. the spin and in huskies were down one. under a nine play, walker with another incredible shot. he had 30. uconn knocked off the number one team in the nation. number nine kentucky took down washington. kentucky won it 74-67. they got uconn in the final. off to kansas city. win number 800 was picked up. top rank duke was in control against can kansas state. duke won it 82-68. baseball a month after losing the world series the rangers josh hamilton has something to smile amount. american league mvp. wizards and sixers the bigger they are the harder they fall. brand took out mcgee.

temperatures plummeted on the east coast. it's windy also. temperatures now in the 30s back from buffalo to albany. the winds are howling up here in new england. 38 mile-per-hour gust at hartford. some of those leaves are still blowing around. new york city will be windy. also along with logan airport. we could see possible delays. sunny and bright but windy and brisk all day long. now thanksgiving day on the eastern seaboard clouds will be increasing, you'll still be on the cooler side in the 40s but this rain for new york and philly and new jersey and pennsylvania will be late in the day so at least thanksgiving day parade looks like we should be okay. buffalo and pittsburgh it looks like we'll have rain on and off during the day four. for you today for your travel, windy in new england. rain today. st. louis through indianapolis chicago. the wintry stuff will be here in the northern plains. that's the area we'll watch carefully. you are not going to believe who
