fire fury. wildfires send arizona residents fleeing as much of the country sweats through recordbreaking heat. what appears to be the source of the deadly e. coli outbreak in europe, and south american shake-up. a rumbling volcano spews tons of ash in chile. good morning, everyone. i'm lynn berry. those stories and more are straight ahead. this is "first look" on msnbc.

we begin this morning with out of control. while some parts of the u.s. recover from a tumultuous tornado season, arizona is now dealing with a blaze covering more than 200 square miles. residents are evacuating as the estate's third biggest wildfire ever rage on. nbc's francis coe reports. >> reporter: smoke spread as far as new mexico and colorado. >> that would be horrible. >> reporter: the fire is a week old. now blanketing more than 140,000 acres. on the scene more than 1,300 firefighters from across the country, but the numbers were no match to mother nature. >> the columns up in the air the last few days has been in excess of 30,000 feet. when you have something that large with that much heat, it kind of generates its own

weather. >> reporter: and it's want just arizona that's baking. record-shattering temperatures have melted the nation's south and midsection. >> temperatures even in the north rising in the mid and upper 90s. this is catching a lot of folks off guard. >> reporter: including in chicago where heat and humidity hovered over the half marathon, which would stop midcourse. one man collapsed and died while a dozen other runners were hospitalized. down south houston recorded 105 degrees breaking a record set more than 30 kwleerz ago. >> why does some parts of the country have too much water, and we don't have any? >> reporter: oh, and, by the way, summer won't even be here for another two weeks. francis coe, nbc news. aas summer-like heat scorches the south and southwest, the melting remnants of winter and steady spring rains are forcing folks in the upper midwest out of their homes. evacuation orders have been issued for 600 residents in

southwest iowa after a missouri river levee breach. yesterday the state's emergency management team airdropped 1,000 sonned sand bags calling the job too dangerous for ground crews. the rising river sent expected to crest until mid to late june. well, in political news, the republican contenders will get more crowded today. former pennsylvania senator rick santorum is expected to officially kick off his bid for the gop nomination. nbc's tracie potts joins us with the latest on this. tracie, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, lynn. the last time we saw rick santorum on a bol lot, it was in pennsylvania. that senate race he lost by 18 points. this time he is hoping to make a comeback. former pennsylvania senator rick santorum is expected to stand in front of a courthouse today not far from the coal mines where his grandfather worked and announce he is running for president. then he is headed straight to iowa and new hampshire.

santorum joins tim pawlenty, mitt romney, and others who have declared. still in the wind, sarah palin. >> what president palin would do is cut the federal budget. >> reporter: she's talking like a candidate crisscrossing the country on a bus, but says she's still 50-50 in deciding whether they'll actually run. the biggest issue these candidates face is the economy. >> five months of this new congress, we haven't seen a jobs agenda come forth. >> reporter: friday's news that only 54,000 jobs were created last month, way below expectations, gives republicans plenty to talk about. the white house calls it a bump in the road. >> don't make too much of any one month's job report, because they're highly variable. rirchlg on the campaign trail, it's fuel for a possible win. >> reporter: now, santorum has already confirmed for next week's presidential debate among the republicans. by the way, so is michelle bachman and we've seen no announcement from her yet. >> tracie potts from washington,

thank you. overseas where agricultural officials in germany believe vej tanl sprouts are at the root of that deadly e. coli outbreak. preliminary tests found that sprouts from beans and other vegetables grown on an organic farm in germany could be traced to infections in five german states. initially linked to two members from spain, the deadly virus has now claimed 22 lives and sickened more than 2,200. four of the sickened victims are americans who had recently traveled to germany. well, israel is bracing for more violence today, a day after deadly clashes between border troops and pro-palestinian protesters killed 20 demonstrators and wounded scores more. the on the 44th anniversary of israel's capture of the golan heights, israeli troops fired tear gas at hundreds of syrian protesters trying to cross over the heavily guarded border. the protest group apparently began on facebook. israel claims the clashes were a syrian smoke screen designed to

divert attention from a bloody crackdown on opposition protests at home. well, here's a look at some of the other stories going on around america today. plans to transport the plane known for its miraculous landing on the hudson river hit a temporary speed bump. a new jersey intersection was not wide enough for a tractor-trailer towing u.s. airways flight 1549 forcing officials to move light posts and a fence to get the flat bed back on its way. the aircraft is scheduled to arrive friday at an aviation museum in north carolina. a group of about 50 people broke out their best moves in the nation's capital to protest recent arrests from a ban on dancing at the jefferson memorial. park police did not make any arrests at saturday's demonstration, but they did force out that protesters before closing the memorial for a short time. in southern california it was surf is up for dozens of dogs at the sixth annual surf dog competition. the dogs needed to catch at

least two waves and more importantly look at doing it. no problem there. it wasn't just dog biscuits on the line. the top prizes included vacations for the dogs and their owners. finally in missouri, it was no holds barred for a few brides to be. hoping to win some prizes before the big day. competitors at the sixth annual cake dive dove head first and put their sweet tooth to work. prizes for the best guys, included gift certificates and honeymoon. that will do. now for a look at your national weather. we turn channel forecast. why is it you have to have your hands behind your back. >> you looked more silly, and that's how you end up on shows like this. >> well, the heat -- it's amazing this spring. you had deadly tornadoes and record flooding on to mississippi and now you have a drought in a huge heat problem throughout much of the southern half of the country.

105 we talked about earlier in the show in houston, not only was it a record high, but that was the warmest you have ever been in june. you set that in the first week of june. i mean, that's pretty incredible stat. others areas in the 0s. record highs in six different states yesterday. today will be exactly the same. now, the northern half of the country up to this point, you've gotten a break. we really haven't seen it all that bad, but some of the heat is going to spread, and we are going to watch the heat returning up into minneapolis today and chicago. here's the weather pattern. you get a big dip in the west and a big dip in the jet stream in the east, and right in the middle is this big bulge, and that's called a ridge of high pressure, and it's slow-moving. ever so slowly this week. it will head to the east coast. here's away we're looking at today. 98 in dallas. 96, kansas city. if we're going to have the 100s, most likely it will be in oklahoma and kansas. even denver is going to be 90 for today. you notice the heat going to minneapolis. now, as we go throughout this week, the pattern is going to change a little bit. we're going to see some of the heat shifting a little bit to

the east, and the jet stream kind of flatens itself out, and this will take the heat and shouldn't it through the mid-atlantic wednesday into thursday. if you're on the east coast, you're going to get a taste of it. here's the extended forecast. dallas, you're in 98 range. then as the ridge breaks down a little bit, your temperatures go back to normal into the low 90s. areas like st. louis, same for you. the hottest period for you in the next two to three days, and then in st. louis you go back down closer to normal with some showers and storms thursday or friday. as the heat slides to the east, be prepared. new york city, philadelphia, even washington d.c., wednesday and thursday, 96 in d.c. wednesday. thursday, 97. that's the same forecast for philadelphia. even new york city has the chance of being up around 96 and 98 degrees. especially on thursday. looks like we've had a break here in the east coast, and then it's really going to come in in a hurry the middle of this week. today enjoyable from new york and new england, and as we mentioned, lynn, that's going to end shortly.

welcome back to "first look." i'm lynn berry. in yemen anti-government protesters have been celebrating the departure of their president. ali abdullah saleh is in saudi arabia recovering from an operation to remove shrapnel from a rocket attack. 11 people died in that assault. the wounded leader is planning to return to power despite months of protest calling for

his departure. in pakistan a pair of bombings have killed at least two dozen people. one attack happened at a bakery living -- leaving 18 people dead. there's been no claim of responsibility so far, but the pakistani taliban have taken credit for other recent attacks, saying they are avenging the death of osama bin laden. meanwhile, a pakistani security official says authorities are nearly certain that a recent u.s. missile strike killed al qaeda commander elias kashmiri. he was believed to have been replacing bin laden as al qaeda chief. his death is still unconfirmed by the u.s. former international monetary fund chief dominik strauss-kahn will be arraigned today. he is expected to enter a formal plea of not guilty. and volcanic ash from chile has been raining down on argentina. the volcano aerupted this weekend after being dormant for half a century. so far thousands have been

evacuated. no injuries have been reported. here's your first look at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opens at 12,151 after losing 97 points on friday. the s&p was down 12 points, and the nasdaq dropped 40. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo, the nikkei lost 111 points, and in hong kong, the hang seng was closed for a holiday. as wall street heads into the first full week of june, traders are going to be likely on edge following friday's disappointing may jobs report. last month employer added the fewest number of new workers in eight months pushing the unemployment rate up to 9.1% from 9%. that spurred a sell-off on friday, and offered more evidence of what many are calling a soft patch in the economy. overseas this morning, shares of tokyo electric power plunged 24% dragging down the nikkei. tepco acknowledged that 1,500 more tons of radioactive water were being removed and moved

into a temporary storage at its fukushima daiichi power plant. gaming giant sony and nintendo lost ground as they scrambled to recover from attacks by hackers. the attack on nintendo appears to be significantly less serious than sony's recent playstation security breach. looking ahead, wednesday's opec gathering in vienna could be the petroleum group's most contentious in years. the organization faces an internal divide over pressure to respond to triple digit oil prices. back here at home apple ceo and co-found other steve jobs makes a big return from medical leave to deliver the keynote speech at apple's developers conference in california. a new operating system and cloud computing service are expected to be among today's highlights. finally, the average penny pincher has got nothing on this guy in ewes utah who has been sited for disorderly conduct after paying a disputed medical bill worth 2,500 pennies. he now faces a fine of $140 or,

it was a gorgeous weekend in new england and the mid-atlantic. temperatures were down. humidity was low. enjoy it while it lasts. it will be really the last day of cooler temperatures. we're in the 50s in most of the suburbs. we're in the 60s in the city to start your day. in today's forecast, we should be dry in most regions. there's a slight chance of a shower or storm, but overall, you should be dry. 85 in d.c. 79, new york. buffalo and pittsburgh, looking nice in the 70s or low 80s. still cool in boston. now, on tuesday this area of the country begins to warm up. 88 on philly. 88 in d.c. then by the time we get to wednesday and thursday, that will be the peak of the heat heading to the east coast. look at philadelphia. wednesday, 95. thursday, dangerous heat at 97 with humidity. the stf that's been in the southern half of the country in the middle of the country is going to head east through the middle of the upcoming week. today's forecast we're in the 90s, mid 90s from denver to kansas city. st. louis to dallas. then as we said, lynn, it all heads east. they'll get a little bit of a break towards the end of this

welcome back to "first look. eye "i'm lynn berry. hollywood continued its summer box office tear with the ""x-men"" leading the charge. ""x-men" first class" flew to a first class finish earning an estimated $56 million during its debut weekend. last weekend's top movie

"hangover part 2" hung in there adding mother $32.4 million to its $186 million two-week total. in third place "kung fu panda 2" came in second this weekend. pirates of the caribbean on stranger tides took fourth place earning $18 million and bumping its three-week cumulative earnings to $190 million. and in fifth place "bridesmaids" held up well earning another $12.1 million. that brings its four-week total to $10 7 million. bill was relieved to hear this. the series "twilight" dominated the mtv music awards for a third year in a row. the saga "eclipse" that led the field with eight nominations, ended up with five golden popcorn trophies, including best movie, best male and female performances, and best kiss. >> didn't even recognize those guys with their shirts on. >> i know. i know. bill, i know you like dressed up for the awards and watched them
