terrain, high winds. we've introduced dry lightning to the mix and with extremely dry fuels, it's just the perfect kn combination to create a fire of this magnitude. >> put this in perspective for us about how dangerous it is for residents who are caught in the fray. >> it's very dangerous to residents in the area. fortunately, we've had incredible partnership and cooperation through the community members who live in those areas and they have left. we've also -- the county sheriff's office has issued some evacuation notices as well as the county sheriff's office in new mexico. and those two areas have been cooperating as well. there are very few residents, and that is a huge relief to us. >> and, brad, the various

the year. jim miklaszewski joins us live. >> when i first heard about five americans being killed by a rocket attack and that it occurred in iraq, i at first thought they must be talking about afghanistan because since the end of the formal combat mission there last august, there have been very few casualties and certainly not in these kinds of numbers. but according to u.s. military and iraqi officials, two militants at least using a makeshift rocket launcher in the back of a pickup truck fired at least five rockets at a u.s. military camp in baghdad. one of those rockets, unfortunately, killed five americans, injured five others. two of the militants, by the way, were also killed when at least one of the rockets misfired inside the launcher. you know, this comes on the heels of a serious uptick in iraqi on iraqi violence as shia

2:06 pm
what are we hear being that meeting? anything yet? >> reporter: well, we are getting some nuggets out of that meeting. president obama, vice president biden just wrapped up a two-hour meeting with their national security team. it included secretary of state clinton, chief of staff daley, and they were actually briefed by video conference by secretary of defense bob gates about the situation in afghanistan. as you mentioned, the president trying to determine exactly how many troops should be withdrawn, when that should begin, and, as you know, there's been a lot of debate about that. now, when asked when that would begin and what the troops withdrawal would look like, here is press secretary jay carney had to say just a short while ago. >> the president has yet to make a decision on the numbers. we had always said it would be real. there were skep tireptices who that the july 2011 date for a drawdown was not real.
2:07 pm
it will begin then. the president is going make his decision as he has said all along based on conditions on the ground. not whether or not there will be a drawdown or the beginning of a drawdown but the size and scope and pace of the drawdown. >> reporter: now, initially it had been thought that 3,000 to 5,000 troops should be withdrawn. we'll have to see if those figures still hold, but all of this comes amidst reports that there are calls to actually hasten the troop drowndoawdown part because the war is expensive, in part because osama bin laden has been killed, and there's long been a push to see h hamid karzai take the lead in that region. president obama will be meeting with president karzai this week by video conference to discuss the troop drawdown and as you heard press secretary jay carney say, he will be making a decision about it very soon. >> kristin, thanks so much. u.s. officials are also

2:09 pm
now celebrating because who should they fear coming into power, especially if it is a vacuum type of situation? >> well, those who are celebrating would be happy to have almost anybody. they are just happy to see the back of president saleh. they think that he's not coming back. this is not yet certain. the crucial thing in some senses is not what happens in the capital of yemen, but what happens in ri yard, tyadh. the saudis will play a crucial role in brokering the next deal. the saudis who are yemen's neighbors, who have a tremendous stake in yemen's stability and it looks like they're willing to step up and play the role of mediator. we just saw secretary clinton saying what the obama administration has been saying for weeks, that we would like to see a democratic transition. for the saudis it looks like they have sort of rolled up
2:10 pm
their sleeves and they're participating in whatever transition takes place. >> is it the vice president who is in charge right now? >> the vice president isn't in charge but he's a very little-known figure. he's a backroom figure. the military essentially, saleh's son and saleh's nephew, both of whom run important parts of the military, they really represent him. >> and in doing so what does that mean? does this mean there do be long standing civil wars going on for power and control, especially when we bring into the fact that there's al qaeda in the arabian peninsula and any connections that may be had there? >> that's a very real possibility. if the situation remains exactly as it is now, saleh is away, his son and nephew are running the military, there are some elements of the military that have mu tinnied, this could continue for a long time and turn ugly. that's why the saudis don't want this to continue. the saudis i think will make the lead in making sure that doesn't happen. >> what about the relationship between saleh and the sons and nephews? any chance some one of them wouy
