and we begin this morning with a stunning confession. after days of denial, married congressman anthony weiner admitted yesterday that he did in fact send a lewd photo to one of his female twitter followers. weener, however, says he has no plans to resign. nancy pelosi has called for an ethices investigation which new york says he will fully cooperate with. tracie potts is in washington with more. tracie, good morning. >> lynn, good morning. weener certainly hopes to keep his job, he said, he's sorry, he takes full responsibility, but when it comes to his work here on capitol hill he said the voters should decide. >> the picture is of me and i sent it. i'm deeply sorry for what his caused my wife huma.

calling for an eth irks investigation. weener had been considered a rising star in the democratic party. some analysts thing he can still win re-election. >> tracie, thanks. dry december rt winds are fanning the flames of a stubborn wildfire in arizona. and it's doubled in size since the weekend and it's how headed towards the new mexico border. a thick layer of smoke from the fire can be seen as far away as iowa as the blaze works its way across the state. now some 365 square miles in size, the flames have destroyed five buildings and scorched nearly 230,000 acres of forest. officials believe the blaze was sparked by an abandoned campfire. and it say much different story in the midwest where residents are scrambling to save a southwest town near the missouri river. a levee has been breached in two places near the town of hamburg. and officials are expecting new breaches over the next few days.

officials say crews are working around the clock to conduct a second barrier and if that doesn't work, portions of the community could be under eight feet of water for weeks. overseas where german health founls don't know what is causing a deadly e collie outbreak which has killed 200 people. they're blaming a farm for the deadly outbreak saying tests found no link between sprouts grown there and the suspected strain. two u.s. soldiers based in germany have been treated for suspected e. coli infections. turning now to politics. as the field of gop presidential contenders grows and their campaigns develop, will we see enough policy differences amongst them to find anyone stands out? last night on "the last word" with lawrence o'donnell, republican strategist david frum

complaining all winter about being cold. >> when it's 98 degrees on thursday, you're not going to complain? >> we'll see. >> everyone has the right to explain, it's just too early for this. unbelievable, two days in a row at the houston airport, we had 105 degrees. that's like desert-type heat. we actually got lucky, we actually had showers later on in the day to try to cool it off. the heat expanded yesterday. it was even 97 in minneapolis. if this was july or august, you say, we get those hot days like this be but this is still the beginning of june. yesterday was 88 in d.c. today, you should be near 90. then we're going up into the upper 90s in d.c. it appears wednesday and thursday. now, the heat ridge is centered over the top of kentucky. the hotter side is where the air is a little dryer. that's west texas, oklahoma and up through kansas. that's where you should be hitting 100 today.

welcome back to "first look." i'm lynn berry. and here's some top stories making news this morning. one of president obama's top economic advisers, austan goolsbee, chairman of the white house council of economic advisers said yesterday he will leave his post this summer to return to teaching. goolsbee's departure comes as president obama faces growing criticism over the nation's economy. a new "washington post" abc news pool says 6 in 10 have gotten back on track. the president's approval rating now stands at 47%. according to the associated press, the u.s. is scrambling to arrange a power transfer in yemen while the president is in

saudi arabia for medical treatment. officials for the yemeni president says he plans to return home within days. dramatic footage from chinese television shows the damage from devastating floodwaters from the country's southwest region. china's official news service said 14 people are dead, 35 are missing. and finally, how do you like this? a discovery by a self-styled arm chair astronomer has the internet buzzing about the possibility of life on mars. you heard it here first. using google earth's mars explorerer, he zoomed in to discover what appears to be a white cylindrical object which claims is 700 feet long and 150 feet wide. that's buy wi he's an arm chair astronomer. the dow opens at 12,089, the s&p lost 30 points, the nasdaq

lost 30. in tok yorke the neek kill added 60 points but in hong kong, the hang seng was down 80. well, stocks slid for a fourth straight day monday with the s&p 500 litting its lowest point since march. friday's disappointing may jobs report has apparently convinced many traders the recovery is indeed in trouble. monday's losses came across the board. all ten industry groups on the s&p fell. financials were hit hard. citi group lost 4%, as did bank of america closing at its lowest point since 2009. lowe's dropped 1.2%. oil over $100 a barrel to a penny on 99, over speculation opec may raise supplies. energy shares reeled led by chevron, the dow's biggest drag. and lorillard, the maker's

new england and the mid-atlantic as we go throughout the week. this morning, temperatures in the 60s. the humidity is low. a warm day with clear skies. the humidity is low. also, our friends in buffalo, you've got rain ahead. a thunderstorm complex is coming down on you from your north. today's forecast, we'll call it 89, widespread through the busy corridor. just a little cooler in boston. we really start to heat it up for wednesday. 95 in hartford. 96 in new york. 97 and 96 in d.c. by the time we get to thursday. this is when we get really hot. 98 is the forecast high in new york city. 97 in philly, 97 in d.c. as i said, there's a shot that one of these locations could hit 100 degrees on thursday. and that's pretty rare. we're predicting hartford at 99 on thursday. that's brutal. a denial from cameron diaz and a lawsuit against michael jackson's estate. plus, yet another honor and yet another cause for lady gaga.
