out. bill wolff you know what time cues are all about. i've got to go. that's "hardball" for now. thanks for being with us. have a great 4th of july weekend pl. that is always one of the best holidays of the year. more politics ahead with cenk uygur. >> big banks, big money. republicans aren't even pretending to root for the little guy any more. tonight, the gop is brazen in their efforts to protect the rich. now long can this party go on before it implodes? minnesota democratic governor shows how you fight back against republicans. do we have a new progressive hero? plus the dominique strauss-kahn trial falls apart. does fox news start in the nix yop white house? we have the amazing report straight from the nixon library. welcome to the show, everybody.
6:01 pm
i'm roo i'm cenk uygur. we have an awesome show tonight. all right, we are the party of the rich. guys came out and said you are for corporate jets, oil subsidies were for the rich. they basically came out and said yes. look at them defending all those programs right here. >> the president is singling out expensive airplanes is not the folk usts issue we are debating here. >> you see the most ugly devicive press conference i think i have ever seen from a president. offered no solutions. other than let's tax rich people. >> the idea we raise taxes as the president said on millionaires and billionaires. raise taxes on oil companies. raise taxes on owners of private jets. that somehow will make a difference in america's debt. that is not only misleading. i think quite frankly it is disappointing. class warfare. >> i love the way these guys cry about class warfare. when president obama goes out, why are you hitting us? no, you're not supposed to do that. listen, you guys have been doing
6:02 pm
warfare all these years. so when somebody says, hey, can the rich just pay a little bit of their fair share? they go, oh, my god, class warfare. look at democratic demands. they are so simple. can we just tax corporate jets in the same way we do other planes? isn't that fair? how about oil subsidy? we can get $40 billion year from taking away oil subsidies from the most profitable companies in the year. where are they getting special privileges. taxes at 15%, that's lower than almost all of you. why are these guys not paying their real taxes which should be 35%? then deducks for the rich, let me tell but that one. it is for people making above $500,000. their deductions go from 35 to 28%. that's miniscule. it is not asking for much. they say oh, how can you hit the rich like this? that is warfare. americans agree with democrats. there are 19 polls this year
6:03 pm
alone saying, you know what? the rich need to pay their fair share, let's tax the rich. in fact, i will give you the specifics. nbc wall street journal popping with 81% saying, tax people making over a million dollars. new york times cbs news, tax people above $250,000. washington post, abc, same thing, 72%. four other polls in the same exact area. the last poll is the gallup poll saying 59% of americans say rich are not paying their fair share. and they are absolutely right. the banks get bailed out. all of the biggest companies in the world get special subsidies. they hide their money in off-shore havens. enough is enough. why? why do the republicans go along with there? because tle get paid by those guys. even the corporate jet people, that's such a tiny, tiny industry. they spent $22 million in lobbying since 2004. that money is getting funneled to politicians.
6:04 pm
how about the oil and gas lobby? you want to see a real lobby? $993 million since 2000 they have spent on lobbying. so that's why the republicans sell out to them. i get it. what i don't get is why anybody votes for them. look, you've got a corporate jet, god bless your heart, vote republicans. that's logical. you're an oil executive, biggest favor in the world. vote for them, i get it. but if you're an average american, why would you continue to support this party and how long can this party go on when they put their flag in the ground and say yes, we represent the richest of the rich and that's it. let's talk about that. join meg is pat buchanan and bill press. pat, look at this, you defended the yacht makers the other day on the show. how do you run a party like this where you say we're for the big fat cat executives. that's the winning strategy? >> the winning strategy in this
6:05 pm
whole debt ceiling battle. the president can land el the republicans. you're in the pocket of the rich and wall street and all the rest of it. what will in july is this -- the republican nets house will say, we need a debt ceiling. that's responsible. we need to raise it. they will raise that, they will tape of to it all of the biden cuts from the senate. that have been agreed to. you're not going to have a single tax increase in there. they are going to send it over to the united states senate. and barack obama is going to sign it. what we saw yesterday on barack obama's part, all that frustration, you know, malia and sasha, they don't do all-nighters, the rest of it, that suggests to me that barack obama knows he is over a barrel right now. >> i don't see that at all. look, if what you say is true, pat, it is an absolute unmitigated disaster for the democrats. if they get absolutely nothing out of this. if the president agrees to that, i would be -- that would be unbelievable. >> hold it. >> let me follow up quickly.
6:06 pm
>> no, come on, pat. >> no, if the president didn't sign it and he puts the country into default -- >> no, no, no, the republicans put the country in default. you can't get away with that. if you say i will compromise nothing, i will make no negotiations and then it is the president's fault for going into default, you're crazy. i want to give you one fact as we talk about this. you know if we go into default and our interest rates go up 1%, it adds $1.3 trillion to the deficit. it makes our deficit to much worse. now if the republicans cared about the deficit, wouldn't they say, under no circumstances are we going to default? >> it just depends. this care about the deficit the democrats are in it. the republican me massachusetts jor lt az you know, you pointed out, no strings attached when bush was in the white house, so they are playing politics. i want to get facts on the table. everybody agrees we got this huge budget problem.
6:07 pm
everybody agrees we are going to now because republicans have demanded it, we are going to cut $2 trillion as the price for getting a debt ceiling raised. democrats have agreed to 1.6 billion in program cuts, right? they are looking for 400 billion. not in new taxes. getting rid of tax subsidies like the one to the corporate jets that we no longer need and can no longer afford and republicans are standing up and defending those. notice one thing, they don't defend the corporate debt taxes. they just attack obama for suggesting that's not fair. >> why isn't it fair, pat, is what i want to know. >> one question. >> pat, i -- >> i have a specific question for you. you can respond to all of us. >> do you love ronald reagan? >> ronald reagan is a terrific fellow. ways there when i went into the white house and he told me what a mistake he made when he raised
6:08 pm
taxes in 1982. >> forget 1982. do you know ronald reagan raised taxes 11 times? >> hold on, pat. not just that. when he did deficit reduction deals, which he did, he put $190 billion worth of revenue increases into those deals. >> yes. >> so shouldn't you do just like reagan and put revenue increase niece the deficit reduction deals? >> have to. >> no, here is what we should do. >> i say no. >> here is what bill is talking about. he is correct that $1.6 trillion in cuts to which the democrats agreed. now, if the republicans, boehner says, we're passing the debt ceiling for one full year for the president, we are going to avoid and default and we are attaching the $1.6 trillion in cuts, that biden and dem krts agreed to and we agreed to and they send it down to the president. he will veto it and put the united states of america into default? come on! >> what i heard from pat -- hold on --
6:09 pm
>> i want to clarify this. pat buchanan just said he disagrees with reagan and would do the opposite of ronald reagan. i want to establish that. now, bill, let's talk about the politics of it, right? their chief of staffs are literally straight from king street. marco rubio and ron johnson hired guys from navigators global there. lobbyists. the guy mike pompeo, we as koch industries lawyer. shouldn't democrats be blowing these guys out of the water? sitting there defending oil subsidies? >> i think the reason you heard so much whining yesterday -- i love it, right? the republicans say we are not like sasha and malia. and to prove it, they went out and threw a temper tantrum. obama called them out. he exposed who they really are.
6:10 pm
that's why they are screaming bloody murder today. he showed -- i mean, to force them, he forced them to defend the corporate jets, oil companies, hedge fund manager. and millionaires and billion airs in addition to try and kill medicaid. >> let's agree -- >> let's agree that president obama just did a magnificent performance yesterday, okay? but that still does not get back to the fundamental point that the republicans have the whip hand here. and when they take those -- >> nonsense. >> no, they don't. >> hold on. then look, if they are the ones that passed the bill with the debt ceiling on there, and raise that and 1.6 trillion, why aren't they going for higher taxes? they would not do it? they don't believe in that? and bill clinton says don't do it. >> they aren't going for higher taxes. lincoln said, can you call a pig a goat. that doesn't make it a goat.
6:11 pm
they are not higher taxes. these are tax give aways. >> you're not going to get them. >> they are oil companies to corporate jets to hedge fund managers. >> call it what you want, you won't get them. >> pat, look, you say the republicans have the advantage. i'm not sure what you call it. they are obviously give aways to the corporates. you say republicans have the advantage. what if we don't raise the debt ceiling but don't go into default. money comes into the treasury all the time. we use it to pay our debt so there is no default. the president says okay i have the biggest line veto in the history of mankind. i will only fund programs you are in favor of. you republicans get nothing from now on. then who's got the advantage? >> you're tell meg that president of the united states -- look, if the president of the united states -- you're right. the president of the united states would have to start chopping spending and programs like that. what are the big ones? medicare, medicaid? social secure snit.
6:12 pm
>> every single republican program is gone. >> and two wars. two wars. >> we know -- we know pat -- pat, we know. the president's got the last word. the president has the advantage. he showed it yesterday. he is not going to accept a deal that doesn't include some revenue expense -- >> bill, we have to leave it there. >> he doesn't have the cajones and you know it. >> he will shut down the republicans if necessary. republicans will get blamed for it just like newt gingrich got blamed for it. >> all right, let me summarize. pat buchanan challenging the president. pat buchanan saying ronald reagan was so wrong, what an interesting segment we had. >> he made mistakes. >> pat buchanan and bill press. you guys are great. thank you. all right, when we come back, we've got a fight in minnesota.
6:13 pm
of course the republicans are scoring the rich as usual. but this time we have a democrat fighting back. we have a new progressive hero. i'm looking for a hero -- oh, my god, no more singing. and bill clinton has a message for obama. fight. his strong words. we will show you them in a minute. plus, was fox news born in the nixon white house? an amazing story of how roger hatched the idea of republican tv propaganda outfit right when he worked for nixon. all this, coming up. thought they were dead. conversation. you know the rich they are protecting, republicans in minnesota, their .03% of the population. that's who this would effect. 7,700 people out of 5.3 million people. but the republicans who are willing to go to the mat for them anyway. because that's their job to protect the rich. by the way, one other part of this, of course they wanted additional elements to this that had nothing to do with the budget. for example, well they wanted long-term, 15% cut in the number of state employees because they've always got to hit the employees. they've got to cause bigger unemployment. then they add requirement that voters show photo identification when voting. why? because they want to limit the number of votes because tle don't want people voting, they are afraid they will vote democrat. and of course, abortion restrictions. what does that have to do with the government? so, dayton said, no, we're not going to do it. and it worked because the people of minnesota are behind him. we will see how it works in the

i don't think it's healthy to be talking about taxes increases or big spending cuts right few pi have to put america back to work. he says this is not the right time to be doing spending cuts at all. we should be waiting a couple years. is that fair point? >> well, it is probably a strong argument. it is the one that president obama is making. let us not forget that bill clinton benefitted from the technology bubble which contributed massive amounts it a budget and that ultimately that bubble burst which led to the troubles we are in right now. that plus bad decisions by the business community and nonregulators. but what i'm really looking forward to, as a reporter only, i'm not saying this is good for the country. but as a reporter i would love to see the 14th amendment option, which is the president using the 14th amendment to the constitution which says the validity of the public debt of the united states authorized by law, dot, dot, dot, shall not be questioned.

worse. what i said was, that the economy hasn't turned around. >> the economy with a was in recession. he made it worse. >> he didn't create the recession, but he made it worse. >> he did not cause this recession, but he made it worse. >> victoria, that seems pretty damning, isn't it. >> we will see his primary cocoa hoerts, pile that on romney then we've got obama-care that was preceded by romneycare. stuff like this keeps damaging and saying these things is like he is leapfrogging and he says i have the lead ai don't need to worry about my fellow republicans. i'm talking to the general public here. i don't want to bash obama too much. but you can't compete in the general if you don't get out of the primary. >> good point. bob, last word on this. >> the idea that mitt romney is back tracking.

>> did you know in 1978, he worked 1970 -- he worked as needa strategist for richard nixon? well, gawker did know that so they went to the nix yn library and uncovered a 300 page document for a blueprint for building a republican tv network called, quote, a plan for putting the gop on tv news. it had rogers ales handwriting literally all over it as you see there. that's his handwriting. he was eventually put in charge of this project. one of the things he said in this memo is that it is a good idea to do a television station like this because quote, the reason poem are lazy with television you just sit, watch, listen. and the thinking is done for you. and he didn't get a clans to

really get that off the ground in 1970s. but a quarter century later, all of a sudden, in 1996, here is the first day of fox news channel. >> bob dole finally scare squared off in the first presidential debate and bob dole proved he has a better vision for the future of america. he will give you back more of your money. >> shocking fox news started that way. in 2000, the most critical thing of all, they selected john ellis, cousin of george w. bush to be the head of their quote unquote, during election. low and behold, we look at what fox news declared first among the networks. watch. >> fox news predicts george w. bush, winner in florida and thus appears the winner of the president sift united states. >> they were the first network to call it. bush's cousin called the election. then all other networks came afterwards. even though it was a statistical tie, all of a sudden, george w.

6:52 pm
country. they said, why don't we create news content, interviews with republican lawmakers, and governors, set et cetera, then send that directly to local stations. we will never get our point of view, according to them, across over the networks. but we can just take it directly to the local stations. >> the idea was to circumvent the network and give them propaganda. >> exactly. >> they did a station with nothing but republican propaganda. you talk about the dirty tricks in there. this is interesting. tell me how they wanted to use democrats to get across their ideas? tlz is a memo in the files that, from one of ails's underlings saying they would pull the plug on a program he was producing that would feature two pro war

senators. senator stennis and mcclellan, two democratic senators. the reason they pulled the plug is they said, roger, they don't know they are being duped thp they don't realize that this is a white house-run operation. and the damage that could be done if they find out is too much for us to bear. so they tried to recruit the dem krts under a false cover. >> that's awesome. that's awesome. that's fox news 101. they dupe democrats that could be on there when they don't realize it is republican tv. they are like, what? i didn't know that. right? so i mean he has an -- you got to give him credit. not just in, coming up with strategy which is in a lot of ways brilliant. but let me give one thing from your own report which is amazing. you talk about how carefully they manipulated the media pl ails writes a memo about, hey, let's pick up this kid during tree lighting. hole him up and push the button

together so you have equal credit. it is amazing. we found the old tape of nixon doing that. let's show you. >> so you put your hand right on here and i will, and we'll do it together. ready? here we go. go. so there you are. and now, if we will all -- if you are still not completely drown, we would like to sing joy -- >> man, exactly how karl rove drew it up for him. this is what they wrote, this simple gesture will do much to humanize him with all parents. it sems like roger ails has been pulling strings for the last how many years? last word, real quick. >> one of the amazing things is that it is like a coach taking
6:55 pm
his play book from one team to the other. when he is working for nixon, or for bush, he advised, look, don't play too much golf because the media will go after you. now he is going after barack obama for playing too much golf. >> exactly. john cook, we got to go. we'll see you.
