onlookers is george anthony, casey's father, caylee's grandfather. the defense made startling claims against him in is opening statement. >> and it all began when casey was 8 years old and her father came into her room and began to touch her inappropriately. >> the story of what happened to little caylee anthony has been a changing one, and the defense has just outlined a very different series of events. >> house is very quiet. >> but in 2008 while the search for their granddaughter was under way and so much was still unknown, george and cindy anthony spoke to msnbc news about life with and without their granddaughter. >> she's just -- she's been our blessing, you know, and she's just our entire life, and without her it's very, very empty. >> caylee marie anthony was born august 9th, 2005. casey, a single mom and her daughter live with george and cindy. >> it was just nice being grandma, it was nice coming home from work and, you know, having caylee there.

i never got tired of caylee. i scooped her up every chance i got. >> june 15th, 2008 -- >> father's day weekend on a sunday, cindy took caylee with her to go visit cindy's father at a nursing home. >> give papa a hug and a kiss. >> this is the last known footage ever recorded of caylee anthony. >> the next day on the 16th, monday, george sees casey leaving for work. caylee is with her. they both have their backpacks. >> and that is the last time george and cindy say they ever see caylee. cindy reaches out to casey to find out where she and caylee are. again and again casey avoids her. >> you know, she had an explanation every day of where she was and a reasonable explanation. >> but cindy grows desperate as days turn to weeks and still no

caylee. then george finds out their car, the white sun fire casey has been driving has been towed. concern gives way to panic when they get close to the car and smell something. >> they get there and they say there's this overwhelming stench just coming from the car. you're three feet away and you can smell it. >> george is a former sheriff's deputy and later tells police he knows the smell. >> it smells like a decomposing body. >> after retrieving the car, cindy anthony finally tracks casey down through a friend and confronts her. >> when casey came to the door, you know, i asked her where caylee was and she said she was with the nanny, and i said let's go pick up caylee, and she said no, mom, you know, it's kind of late in the evening. i told her, i said one of two things is happening, you know, either we are going to drive to, you know, pick up caylee or i'm going to take you to the police

august 2008, no one has seen little caylee marie anthony for more than two months. her mother casey has been charged with obstructing the investigation. her troubles are about to multiply. casey is again arrested. this time on charges unrelated to caylee's disappearance. >> she had used some moneys and checks in an account that did not belong to her. it belonged to someone else. >> casey would later plead guilty to check fraud. meanwhile, the orange county sheriff's office goes on to reveal preliminary findings of

its forensic investigation. >> we do have returns that indicate human decomposition was present and located in the defendant's vehicle. >> among the findings, elevated traces of chloroform found in the spare tire cover and trunk liner, and some disturbing internet searches on the family computer. someone had used the computer before caylee disappeared. back in march there were google searches for neck breaking and household weapons and even more significantly. >> was on the computer is where we found that there were searches for the word chloroform and trying to find information about chloroform. >> the google searchs on the anthony computer are really troublesome. >> casey's family continues to stand by her amid the flood of forensic evidence and increasing public hostility.

an orange county grand jury indicts casey on october 14th, 2008. >> to first count is first degree murder. >> casey pleads not guilty to all the charges against her, including first degree murder, aggravated child abuse, aggravated man slaughter and four counts of lying to investigators. in a jailhouse visit with her parents, casey steadfastly maintains that caylee is alive and with the mysterious baby-sitter, the one police believe she made up. >> she needs to return caylee. i don't know what her reasons are? >> mom, i don't know. i forgive her. my only concern is that caylee comes back to us and she's smiling and she's happy and that she is -- that she's okay. >> but on december 11th, 2008, six months after caylee is last seen, a utility worker makes a

startling discovery. >> this is orange county utility emergency dispatch. we found a human skull. >> oh, my gosh, what he 's the location? >> the remains of a young child are found inside a sealed plastic bag about a quarter of a mile away from the anthony home. duct tape is wrapped around the skull. the medical examiner announces her findings. >> with regret, i'm here to inform you that the skeletal remains found on december 11th are those of the missing toddler, caylee anthony. the cause of death is going to be listed as homicide by undetermined means. >> in late january, a month after caylee's remains are found, george anthony is taken to the hospital, then released after an apparent suicide attempt. police track him down at a daytona beach motel after his family reports him missing. >> he's been through a lot. the entire anthony family has

been through i a lot. >> a year and a half later as casey's trial approaches, george and cindy anthony once again sit down with msnbc news. >> i want my daughter home. then again, we need to see this through. we have always said we always wanted to find out what happened to caylee, no matter where the road or the path takes us. >> i want the truth to come out and i want the evidence to show that casey had nothing to do with it. >> in may of 2011 the long awaited trial finally begins. casey anthony could face the death penalty if she's convicted in the murder of her daughter. >> the most anticipated murder trials in florida history has started. >> day one already made shocking allegations. casey is actually a victim. >> who is going to believe a liar? especially if they cry sexual abuse. >> her attorneys argue that her father, george, sexually abused casey as a child and covered up what was actually the accidental drowning of caylee.

i need to find her. >> cindy anthony's reaction to the 911 tape was visceral. >> how long has she been missing for? >> i had not seen her since the 7th of june. >> sitting on the stand and then listening and slowly falling down behind the witness stand in tears crumpled over in agony, i don't think there's a single person who didn't feel sorry for her. >> after a short break, cindy returns to the stand and the prosecution plays another audiotape. this time in a phone call from jail casey seems angry with her mother about what cindy said in a recent media appearance. >> well, i just saw your nice little cameo on tv. you don't know what my involvement is and stuff? >> casey. >> mom. >> what. >> no, i don't know what your involvement is, sweetheart. you're not telling me where she's at. >> because i don't [ bleep ]

present jailhouse videos of visits in 2008 between casey and her family. videos the defense tried to keep out of court, but judge barry denied the request. >> it's kind of like candid camera, the behind the scenes look, and it ain't pretty. >> i'm just as much of a victim as the rest of you and it hasn't been portrayed that way and probably won't be but i know that. >> that is a narcissism to the nth degree. >> george desperately seeking information about caylee. if the defense's theory is true, george would already know that his granddaughter had drowned in the pool. >> the agencies can come up with a plan to get caylee, get caylee safely, believe me. that can happen. that can happen. >> i understand that, dad. >> so we just need all the cooperation we can get, sweetheart. >> i have given you guys everything that i have and some.

roommates? >> darrel and jennifer. >> i think casey thinks that she can talk her way out of anything, get her way out of anything, and i think she operates in a world in which she really believes in the moment what she's doing and what she's saying. >> do you know where she's from with a name like -- >> she's puerto rican and her father is black. she's from new york. she lives in miami. >> just on and on, lie after lie and no remorse about the lies. if you catch her had n a lie, she doesn't care. >> in 2008 casey took investigators to universal studios where she claimed she worked, but again, she was caught in the lie when they discovered she was fired two years earlier. >> ms. anthony told us she worked at universal studios. she was very matter of fact when she told us what she did. >> did you lie to us? >>

>> if you do point it out to her and say wait a minute i know that was a lie when she got to universal studios, and then she moves on to her next lie. >> how old is she. >> she's almost three. >> do you think she -- >> because she's with someone else. >> she's with someone else. she hid her from you for five weeks. but she was -- >> the jury listens as investigators seem to get fed up with casey's stories. >> here's where the truth needs to come out. okay, no more lies, no more opening up your mouth. we have been very respective.

but we're tired of the lies. no more lies. what happened to caylee? >> i don't know. >> you do know. >> i don't know where she is. >> the prosecution may have succeeded in painting casey a liar, but now they turn to the forensic evidence to try to convince a jury she's also a murderer. key to this part of the trial an overwhelming odor that smelled like a dead body. >> i opened the driver's side. i immediately smelled the odor of decomposition. >> samples were stored in cans to preserve the smell. >> prosecution is trying something very novel in this case which is introducing evidence of a smell of death from a trunk of a car. >> dr. vos, a senior researcher with the oak ridge national lab tested those samples. >> do you have an opinion as to whether it was a decomposing human body in the trunk of that

car at some point? >> i can find no other plausible explanation other than that to explain all the results we found. >> now that's going to be very damning evidence, but it doesn't automatically link casey to that dead body. >> also found in the trunk, a strand of hair consistent with caylee's that prosecutors say showed signs of decomposition. and then there was the chloroform. the prosecution suggested the potentially toxic substance played a role in caylee's death. >> did the amount of chloroform that you found in the crow mat gram surprise you? >> we were shocked. >> why? >> we have never seen chloroform in that level in environmental samples before, at least i never have. >> the prosecution continues to connect the dots going from the chloroform found in the trunk of the car to dozens of internet searches on the anthonies' home computer for chloroform and how to make it. >> how many times was that site

visited? >> according to the history 84 times. >> they argue casey was the only one at home who could have made those searches, searches that took place in march 2008, three months before caylee disappeared. >> i think it's going to automatically make a jury think she was looking into murder, ways of murdering her child. the defense could have argued an accidental chloroforming. she was trying to put her to sleep but not kill her. but again, they are not going with that strategy. >> after testimony about the computer searches, the prosecution turns to the gruesome findings of december 2008. medical examiner dr. jan garvolia explains there is no other logical conclusion other than homicide to explain caylee's death. >> there is no child that should have duct tape on its face when it dies. there's no reason to put duct tape on the face after they die. based on our experience we've

seen that in cases of homicide. >> and there's more disturbing details about that duct tape. according to the prosecution, it's the same brand of duct tape that was found covering a gas can in the anthony home, a brand not widely available. and something else, a haunting detail. >> an outline of a heart appeared in one of the corners on the edge of that piece of duct tape. >> an fbi forensic examiner testifies about a heart-shaped sticker that she believes was placed on the duct tape over caylee anthony's mouth. a set of heart stickers was also found in the anthony home. after more than 50 witnesses and 19 days of trial, the prosecution rests. >> the prosecution has done a compelling job. they have given us the character of this 25-year-old woman. they have shown us her ability
