leaders with both parties constructive and he says that the discussion was frank. >> everybody reconfirmed the importance of completing our work and raising the debt limit ceiling so that full faith and credit of the united states of america is not impaired. what we decided was that staffs as well as leadership will be working during the weekend and that i will reconvene congressional leaders here on sunday with the expectation that at that point, the parties will at least know where each other's bottom lines are. >> nbc's kristen welker joining us live from the white house. kristen, what more are we hearing about the movement to the middle for a potential compromise? >> well, hi, thomas. it seems that there is a little bit of progress made here and both sides agreeing that they have to get a deal done by the august 2nd deadline which is the

take awaypoint as the president said they will be working throughout the weekend and come back sunday, and that is when the president says that the hard bargaining really begins. now, the president has been pushing a big deal. so what is a big deal? white house officials tell me anything over $2 trillion, but he is pushing for more in the area of cuts that would equal $4 trillion over the next 10 to 12 years. now, this all comes against the backdrop of a report today in the "washington post" saying thatm president obama is putting social security on the table along with medicare and medicaid and when we asked the white house about this, they said, look, this is not news. the president has always supported the idea of small cuts in those entitlement programs to make them more effective as long as the cuts didn't impact beneficiaries and having said that some folks on the hill say there are some scenarios which would see a major overhaul of the entitlement programs, but the white house says they would

not want to see anything to overhaul the main programs. but one of the sticking points here, thomas, is taxes. democrats want to see a rollback in tax credits for the wealthy americans and in big corporations, and the republicans have said no way, we don't support anything that looks like a tax increase. however, in the past 24 hours or so, we have seen some republicans begin to change their tune on that, and this is what house speaker john boehner had to say earlier. take a listen. >> we believe that comprehensive tax reform on a corporate side and personal side would make america more competitive, help create jobs in our country, and it is something that is under discussion. >> is it possible by august 2nd? >> and you heard luke russert say, could you get the reforms done by august 2nd? and they did not answer that question, but again, as

president obama said today, everyone is very aware of the august 2nd deadline and they want a deal done, so they will be back here over the weekend to get to some real progress on the debt ceiling debate. thomas? >> kristen welker at the white house for us. thanks. joining me now is republican committee national chairman reince priebus, and kristen is talk about what is happening with these talks at the white house with john boehner calling them productive and the president hopeful about getting it done by the looming datef of august 2nd which is the deadline for the u.s. to default on the dets. in your estimation, what do you think will happen? can we make it to that date and get something moved to the middle? a compromise before that? >> well, i mean, obviously, as you know, and i think that youm -- you almost said it yourself that the devil is in the details, of course, and we don't know what the details are, but i can tell you this that the republicans are not going to go

along with tax increases, and speaker boehner is going to talk about the tax reform. that is a lot different than tax increases, so i think that we need to make sure that is very clear. i think that at the end of the day, americans in the country are starving for a washington that is listening to what the needs of this economy is. i think that what we are really looking for are spending cuts, deep spending cuts in order to allow for an increase in the debt ceiling. those increases have to be matched with serious spending cuts, and i think that that is really a problem spot for the president, because what he is trying to push is tax increases. when he tried to raise the ante as the rhetoric is now spinning, what he is really talking about is not spending cuts, but revenue increases, which in fact are -- excuse me, tax increases. and that is something that our country doesn't need and something that the republicans

support. >> and reince, you say devil in the details, and speaking of that, they want to eliminate loopholes for the wealthy, and raise taxes as well. and let's hear what harry reid had to say on the other side. >> difficult choices have to be made, and we should together cut programs that help people in real ways, and eliminate tax breaks for companies who make record profits, and the owners of private jets and yachts should be part of this problem. >> wouldn't you agree that most of the americans out, there everyday americans wouldn't mind seeing that there would be some type of tax raise on the 2% of the country, and the people who can afford it to, and it also seems from what we arer are he from harry reid how house speaker john boehner can get the

tea party democrats to agree to what is being put out there? >> well, this is a problem. it is a red herring, and the reality, it is not truthful. we won't solve any, any debt problems, economic problems in this country that we all agree we are facing. we all agree that the government is making promising that it can't keep, and the reason that it can't keep the promises is because it is spending too much money, so that the red herring in all of this is that somehow taxing corporate jets is somehow going to resolve our monstrosity of a spending problem. i have a 6-year-old little guy jack, and when he is my age and the trajectory of the country, it is going to cost 42 cents on every dollar made in america just to run the federal government. now, taking harry reid's advice of tax and corporate jets and whatever else he threw in there, that is going to do nothing to

resolve the trillions upon trillions of dollars that is becoming an avalanche upon not just on our kids' heads, but ours, you and i and the people listenbing. we are moving to the economic condition of greece, and these folks are talking about corporate jets. what they need to be talking about is cutting spending -- >> but is there a way to move to the middle and cut spending, but other fat as well, and other pork to figure out a common middle ground to not talk about this up until august 2nd. it is basically like you bring up with your child when they get the homework it is due and due at a certain time, and we keep pushing the can down the road and why can't we get an consensus out of washington, d.c.? >> well, for one thing the democrats and it should have passed a budget. i don't know what the day count is anymore, but i think it is 750 days, and even when the

democrats had full control of congress and full control of the senate, and they had a president who had 70% approval ratings at the time, they didn't pass a budget. this whole year has been a year and a past two years before that and the three years of kicking the can down a road. and here we are again. and the reality is that what the democrats want and what this president wants is a blank check. they want a credit card without a limit. all of us would love to have a blank check and a credit card without a limit. but when you run out of money, you know, the solution isn't going to be to get another credit card like this president wants to do. it is stopping the spending and getting the fiscal house under control which this president has not shown a propensity to do while he has been in office and we have an economy in peril, and a debt ceiling limit coming on august 2nd and a senate talking about loopholes and tax iing th

rich which is insanity. >> we are due to hear from congresswoman nancy pelosi later this morning. she is planning to hold a press conference after the negotiations with the president, and tonight, lawrence o'donnell will get reaction from the house minority whip steny hoyer on msnbc. major developments today in the casey anthony case. she is a free woman next wednesday july 13th after being acquitted of killing her 2-year-old daughter caylee. judge belvin perry sentenced her to four years in jail for lying to police, but she is getting time reduced by good time served and in addition she will have a $4,000 fine. >> as you can see there, dozens of protesters are outside of the

courthouse and many of them were outraged that anthony was acquitted of murder. today, some jurors came out and said that while they were upset and sickened over the ver dishgts thverdict that they could not convict on the evidence. >> not on death, because it is a very serious charge and there was not enough evidence. >> and another juror told a newspaper tearfully, i just swear to god i wish we had more evidence to put her away, i truly do. >> let's bring in the criminal defense attorney anne brimner to talk about this. i want to get straight to this about your thoughts on the sentence and obviously the credit for time served, and it is something that we were anticipating, but a lot of people may be shocked that she is out in less than a week. >> absolutely. it is like a distinction without a difference, because concurrent versus consecutive amounted to

six days. she is out on wednesday. for everybody not understanding what the credit for time serve and the good time she would get and will get from the court, it is going to happen sooner than we think. a lot of people, including myself, thought it could have happen happened today with the concurrent sentences with the judge, but it didn't make a difference at the end of the day. >> when we talk about casey's legal problem, they are not over yet, because the prosecution wants to force her to repay the expense costs of the trial and the investigation and a woman is suing her for defamation, and the texas equusearch who are the people who searched on horseback and they may sue her for what they did for the missing child caylee search. what battle will she have when she gets out of jail? and it is going to be one thing after another? >> well, at least the three things that you mentioned, thomas. the zanny the nanny case, she is going to be deposed and asked what happened. this could be the first time

that the world hears and it will all be public of what she says happened, but the second thing, the equusearch case, the parents hired them, so maybe no standings on casey anthony. and somebody sued ross perot when he didn't run for president, but it doesn't mean that the case has standard or merit. but when you look to the law enforcement costs, that is something specific to each state. but they have to take a percentage in termings of the cases or the counts for which she was convicted. because she was not convicted of murder. she was not convicted of the whole kit and caboodle shall we say, but 5% if you could say that of what she was charged with when you look at the premeditated murder charge that could have resulted in the death penalty. >> anne bremner, great to see you today. thanks. >> thanks. a 100-year-old british tabloid "news of the world" is shutting down. all of this out of a growing scandal of hacking potential

welcome back, everybody. a top aide to presidential contender tim pawlenty is apologizing for a comment he made about michele bachmann calling it sex appeal and talking about why she will be difficult to beat next year. ben weber told the "hill" newspaper, she has hometown appeal and ideology appeal and hate to admit, but a little sex

appeal, and now, he has issued a statement saying that i have made a mistake disrespectful to congresswoman bachmann and i was not speaking on behalf of congressman pawlenty's campaign and i apologize. and joining us is michael smerconish who is also an msnbc analyst, and you have been talking about this with your liser lis error i >> i don't believe that an apology is needts, because she is a good-looking woman and mitt romney is a good looking guy.

maybe there is a correlation between good looks and their commentary, but it is good thing and that is what vin weber meant. >> yes, they could win the republican prom. >> but he said that i don't think that he or anybody else should use somebody's sex appeal for the strength of the office or the strength of the campaign. so, the aide's comments highlight the minnesota rivalries and the tensions going on here, don't they? >> well, they do, and i think that there is a sensitivity, and any time that you are talking about michele bachmann or sarah palin for that matter, but if it is a candid and truthful conversation about the attributes of what they bring to the table, looks have to go into the dynamics and not just the women, but the men as well. barack obama is a handsome guy, and who would deny that? >> well, it is a sensibility that a country that is more self-aware of strong female candidates entering the fray of presidential politics, and we have not had this before.

we have had jarrell jarrell dee rald -- geraldino ferrara or hillary clinton? >> well, that is true, but i am not vote on someone based on the relative attractiveness, but it is a factor. there is a correlation between those we lekt and whether they are good looking people. >> sure, there a correlation. be sure to see him on "meet the press" this sunday with tim pawlenty and david gregory on "meet the press." and nasa's shuttle launch is in jeopardy, because a lightning

strike hit one-third of the mile of the launch pad, and technicians have to make a thorough check for damage. we are joined by jay barbary with the latest. what are you seeing weather wise, and what we see percent e percentage-wise of this launch going off at the specified time. >> well, thomas, the weather is pretty bad today. we have already had that one big thunderstorm about noontime. they expect another row of thunderstorms to bring in before sunset and bringing more lightning toward the pad and the same weather tomorrow. there is a 30% chance that "atlantis" will leave the launchpad as scheduled at 11:26 a.m. eastern time. the only way we can know if we will do this is to countdown, get there, and see if if the clouds open. then if not, they will postpone at least a day, and if they go ahead to fuel and get low in the countdown, thomas, they will try to probably postpone and go again on sunday.

so, they won't know until tomorrow and we won't know about anything on the lightning strikes affecting the pad if at all today, thomas. >> and the delay could be something that people are excited about, because it is inevitably putting off the last launch of "atlantis" and brian williams interviewed john glenn who is not excited about the shuttle retiring today, and brian asked him if there was a better way to end this program, and take a listen, because i want to ask you about it on the other side. oh, nevermind, we have floated it out. i apologize about, that jay. >> okay. that is all right. >> i know you are familiar with what john glenn has to say about this in the interview with brian. >> one of the world's great people. >> he is a great guy and i have had many opportunities to talk to him before, but have you got an idea of the disappointment he is experiencing with the other members of the nasa family that

it is being retired? >> not only do i agree, thomas, but everybody in the space family, because when president bush canceled the shuttle program, he did it when we had another program called constellation to be completed and we would have another spacecraft to step into. but this is the first time that has happened, because we have gone from mercury to gemini, and gemini to apollo, and apollo to the shuttle, but nothing this time. that is what john glenn is worried about and we are all worried about. nasa is trying to move ahead and get commercial spacecraft and hoping within a couple of months to announce the heavy lift contract to puts a troe nauts for t -- astronauts out of the earth orbit called a heavy lift, and they hope to get that announced shortly, thomas. >> we will know about tomorrow, and great to see you, jay barbary, we will hope that the weather clears up.

seven figures were even hush money type payments, and he said that was wrong and he did not know the circumstances. but this is what james murdoch said that got to me, he said that the news of the world and news international failed to get to the bottom of repeated wrongdoing without legitimate conscious and purpose, and what he is saying in a sense is that the hacking of the cell fon pho and the mail accounts was a routine activity and not to just route out outcomes of story, but to produce stories especially people in the throes of grief, and having their voice mails eaves dropped by people who did not have the legal right to do. so that is why it exploded like it did. >> this could be the tip of the iceberg on this one, but mike

african-americans, and asian americans and european americans and native americans and others be included in the curriculum, and all this bill does is to add lgbt americans and teaching the broad diversity of the human experience can only be beneficial to the students, and not only beneficial to the lgbt students who have greater self-esteem and respect for the student, but also for the student at the next desk who does not understand the history, but it is historically a community discriminated against and demonized and fighting successfully for the civil rights and full inclusion in society and treated equally under the law, and that is an important chapter of history for kids to better understand who they are. >> there are certain people, opponents of the bill of the said legislature saying that you should not micromanage school

instruction, and what is your reaction to the opinion, because you are is to believe there is a pushback from people who disagree with california doing this. >> well, we recognize it is a sensitive subject for some folks, but again, we include all of the different chapp chapters we rightfully require that there was an african-american man who by the name of dr. martin luther king who fought for people's civil rights and was assassinated for their rights, but there was also a gay american man harvey milk who bravely fought for everyone's civil rights and he was also assassinated for his efforts. it is not natural to teach one and not the other, and in the context of an ever-growing and phenomenon of brutal bullying on school campuses which have led to multiple suicides of 12 and 13-year-old kids who can't take the pain anymore, that this is important that we better inform the students.

in fact, in ventura, california, two years ago there was a 12-year-old boy in his sixth grade class shot dead by a fellow 12-year-old, and when the teacher asked the assailant why did you do this? he said that his classmate was too girlie. we are failing the students when they think that because someone is different from how they see the world, that that person is okay to murder. we need to better educate our students of the fact of the differences among us. >> and mark, we have to go, but do you think that the governor brown will sign this. >> i have a habit of not speaking for the governor, but i hope he receives wit a open mind and heart. >> thank you, state senator mark leno. thank you for your time. >> thank you. and now an 18-year-old high

school student was found dead and now her ex-boyfriend is found guilty. investigators say they found evidence insigh of the youde of man's house, and michelle sigona talks to us more about this startling case. michelle, explain to us what we know about the young man nathaniel fujita who is accused of the brutal crime and what may have led him to this situation. >> well, it is interesting, thomas, i was speaking with the d.a.'s office earlier today, and from what they were able to find so far, there has been violence within the relationship over the three years they were together. i can tell you that they did break up in april. but have been on and off over the last couple of months. of course, the investigation is still ongoing, so it is going to be interesting to see what will turn up, if there was emotional, mental sort of abuse, and things like that prior to leading up to

this alleged murder. >> michelle, when you say on again/off again, how on again/off again was it? how turbulent was the relationship that the two had? >> well, it appears sunday, they had communication and she was at his house and questioned from authoritie authorities, and wh at he told investigators she was here and i last saw her at 7:ha. she was leaving her job at the mall, and she did not come home and her father reported her missing, and her body was found monday from a buy cyclist monday, and the autopsy took place and we found out she was victim of a murder, and nnd he charged with first-degree murder, and this dates back to teen dating violence. and there are things like controlling behavior and things like that that will happen if

the boyfriend or the girlfriend of that matter is saying negative things, taking control of the cell phone or isolating them from families and what we need to do is to educate them not just from teens that it could happen to them, but to happen to the friends. >> and we will follow this one, too. michelle sigona, good to see you. >> you, too. for the first time in 25 years a man has mabeen mauled ba grizzly bear. a man was surprised after a bear who was trying to protect her cubs attacked the man. the grizzly is still on the loose in the park. the 57-year-old man's name is withheld until his family can be notified. lawyers for former imf head dominique strauss-kahn says he will not plead guilty to any charges. his attorneys met with prosecutors wednesday. he is accused of sexually

assaulting a hotel maid, but there are doubts over the accuser's credibility. meanwhile, the maid's lawyer is asking for a special prosecutor the take over the case. and the barack obama administration is asking for two programs to help homeowners who cannot pay their mortgages. for the first time qualified homeowners can miss payments for 12 months before the foreclosure procedures can begin, but not all jobless homeowners will fall under those rules. we are waiting for word from the supreme court for the stay of execution for a man scheduled to die in texas. he is said to be executed by lethal injek shun four hours from now. he was sentenced to die for the 1994 rape and murder of a 16-year-old girl from san antonio. the white house is calling for the execution to be delayed, because the texas law enforcement officials failed to tell him that he had the right to notify mexican authorities for help with the legal

representation. and now we are joined by pete williams with more on this. when can we expect the supreme court to weigh n because time is of the essence here? >> well, presumably 7:00 tonight, and there is no deadline, but they try to get in before these things are scheduled to happen, if they try to intervene to stop the execution. at shish issue is the vienna conventi convention treaty which says that you can contact your government of your immigration country, and the defense says that would have made a difference. and they say that if this right is not extended to nationals in this country, and other countries, then americans overseas who are arrested might have the same problem, and they say that the united states needs to live up to its treaty obligations.

now, thomas, we have been through this before during the bush administration where there was a similar case, and president bush intervened trying to get the texas courts to stop an execution, because the u.s. supreme courts said, maybe a u.s. international treaty, but it involves the state and not the united states. so they are asking for this execution to stay while congress is working on a bill to give the courts more jurisdiction to hear these case. so that the justice department is saying that you can hold this off, this execution until we see what congress is going to do and delay the execution until the end of the current congress, and we are waiting to see what the u.s. supreme court does. >> pete williams in washington. thank you, pete. courtney hazlett will join me next with the scoop. also, some things that you should know. former congressman mark foley revealed today he has prostate cancer, and he will undergo surgery tomorrow. the 66-year-old republican said
