leaders. while the president called yesterday's budget talks at the white house constructive, it's said there's still a lot of hard work ahead before any deal gets done. michelle franzen has more. >> reporter: raising the stakes, but still no deal on raising the nation's debt ceiling following president obama's meeting with house and senate leaders. >> everybody knows that there's going to be pain involved politically on all sides, but our biggest obligation is to make sure that we're doing the right thing by the american people. >> lawmakers have until august 2nd to keep the government from defaulting on loans. before the meeting house speaker john boehner once again said raising taxes is not an option, but for the first time he opened the door to rollbacks on some tax credits and closing tax loopholes. >> we believe that comp rehensie

fax reform would make america more competitive, help create jobs in our country, and it's something that is under discussion. >> there are reports the president may be open to medicare, medicaid and social security reform. a move that put him in the hot seat with progressive democrats. meanwhile, obama says the ongoing talks are just that until a deal is done. michelle franzen, nbc news, washingto washington. >> at kennedy space center severe weather is threatening to delay florida's final space launch program. good morning to you, jay gray. >> good morning, veronica. launch teams work on final pr preparations on 35a, though there's one issue they are dealing with they can do nothing about here. >> the countdown has resumed towards towards an 11:26 a.m. liftoff time.

>> the countdown is clouded by concerns about the weather. >> we've been talking about this for a few days now. as you can see the clouds roll in and we're starting to see showers. >> nasa showers captured this lightning strike thursday afternoon. overnight the weather did not delay tanking procedures and at this point they're not working any technical issues to prevent liftoff later this morning. as many as a million spectators are expected to flood the space coast for launch. many camping out overnight for a prime spot in case the clouds break. >> this is like the best. t just crazy, crazy good. >> mission managers continue their final preparations knowing full well the decision on the final shuttle flight may not come from engineers or rocket scientists, but instead from mother nature.

>> right now she's not cooperating. the clouds are in the area, so is the rain. a launch is 70% no-go at this point. i'm jay gray, veronica, back to you. >> jay gray in cape canaveral. in a florida courtroom yesterday casey anthony was sentenced to four years behind bars for lying to police investigating her daughter caylee's death. the maximum punishment for the four misdemeanor charges. she looked relaxed awaiting a judge's decision and remained stoic after learning she wasn't going home just yet. factoring in time off for good behavior. initial calculations projected a release date of next wednesday. however, prison officials later push that had date back to july 17th. in texas, tragedy struck at the ballpark yesterday when a fan took a fatal fall over the railing while trying to catch a baseball. let's go to nbc's fred rogan?

>> almost a year to the day a man fell out of the stands in arlington, texas, and suffered a fracture skull, it happened again. this time the man died. as that man was trying to catch it, he tumbled over the railing and fell 20 feet. he was conscious when paramedics arrived. the team announced afterwards he died at a local hospital. the ranger president said the team was heavyhearted about this. hamilton who threw the ball was distraught. our thoughts and prayers go out to the family. back to you. >> fred, thank you. here's your first look at other news in the area today. approximately 200 pounds of dine mitt sent one pennsylvania bridge out with a bang. hundreds watch as the bridge that served for the last 111 years came crashing down. the bridge was determined to be structurally deficient.

it was just a few feet south of the old one. in utah a pair of conjoined robins are reaping the benefits of being in the right place at the right time. fortunately the birds were discovered by an experienced animal rescuer. the birds are connected at the wings and unable to fly, so they're bound to become easy prey. the rescuer is hoping they can be successfully separated. finally, a couple of milwaukee teens involved in this mob of vandals and thieves have been arrested thanks to their mother, believe it or not. the mom recognized her 13-year-old daughter and 15-year-old son when she watched a news report on the store robbery. saying she didn't raise them to act that way, the mom ratted out her own children to teach them a lesson. hmm. now for a look at the national weather, we turn to nbc meteorologist bill karins with the weather channel forecast. what do you think about that? go, mom. >> i don't know if it's advised, but hey. i still can't get over the video

of the baseball player, the fan. that's so sad. >> i know. it's really too bad. it's so tragic what happened. and his son was with him as well. >> just miserable. wish that family the best. let's talk about the space shuttle atlantis. we already heard jay gray telling us about the weather is really iffy. unfortunately this tropical moisture is all over the state of florida, and that's going to cause some problems as we go through launch time. if it was launching right now, it would be okay. there's no rain over the kennedy space center. we have rain in tampa. as we go throughout the morning we get heating throughout the day. they don't fool around with it. sometimes when the shuttle lifts off as it goes through the clouds that can spark lightning itself. once they learned they they started getting strict with the criteria. unfortunately it looks only like a 30% chance that it will

actually lift off today. the weather, 70% chance of a no-go because of showers and storms. it's also windy, too. the winds are 10 to 20 miles per hour gusts. maybe to 25. they don't like it too windy, either. the shuttle is a glider. they're concerned if it ever had to do a emergency landing if it could get back to the launch pad. as far as the weather this morning, a lot of rain in the midatlantic, definitely an umbrella day from new york to d.c., baltimore, philadelphia, around richmond, too. we have a little bit of rain in kentucky and also tennessee this morning. so the forecast today. it's still a very soupy air mass. thunderstorms will be widespread with heavy rain in the midatlantic. and there's the storms in the deep south. so veronica, we have our fingers crossed they'll get it up today. they may have to wait until the weekend where it also isn't the best of forecasts. >> i don't like the umbrella da. jobs jump and a trashy tabloid bites the dust. your first look at this

welcome back to "first look." i'm veronica de la cruz. in mexico a man died by lethal injection for the 1994 rape and murder of a teenager. they delayed the execution over concerns it would violate an international treaty. the court refused. before his death, the man apologized and then shouted viva va mexico. a man suspected of killing seven people including his daughter in a horrific rampage took his own life, ending a standoff involving random hostages. the hostages were released

unharmed. among the dead were two children. today the royals head to los angeles. and in spain, daredevils were at it once again taking their chances in the running of the bulls. it is day two of the annual scramble. today an australian man was gored in the leg and three others were injured. brave souls. now here's your first look at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opens at 12,719 after rising 93 points yesterday. the s&p was up 14. the nasdaq gained 38. the nikkei added 66 points. the hang seng grew 196. the rally returned thursday as a big rebound in retail sales and

strong job reports pushed stocks near the annual highs. they notched eight day of gains and briefly traded at the high for the year. both the dow and the s&p 500 stand close to their highs for 2011. retailers have their best june in 12 years as warm weather lure shoppers. urban outfitters gained 6%. first time unemployment claims dropped to a seven-week low, a sign of fewer layoffs, and another report showed companies added more than double the number of jobs economists had forecast for june and a huge jump for the previous month. all that boosted optimism for the government report on unemployment for june. yesterday they raised the forecast for the job creation by a whopping 75,000. there was bad news. oil rose over $2 a barrel as speculators gambled global demand will rise. and gas prices that dropped since may are up about a nickel since just the end of last week. finally, in a stunning

response to the scandal engulfing his media empire, r rupert murdoch put 200 out of work. england's biggest selling sunday newspaper for good. the paper lost advertisers after it hacked the voice mails of thousands from child murder victims to the families of england's war dead. the scandal has also frozen murdoch's attempt to take over a profitable pay channel. it's now thought murdoch will run a sister tabloid, the sun, on sundays. a 1995 no state had obesity rate above 20%. today all the states do except for colorado which stands at 19.8%. mississippi is the heaviest state with an adult obesity rate of 34.4%. and four years ago only one state had an adult obesity rate above 0%. today a dozen states top that 30% mark. for more information on this and

derek jeter continues grinding towards the baseball milestone of immortality, 3,000 hits. here's nbc's fred roggin. >> we begin with your daily derek jeter update. he wasted no time against the rays. belted the first pitch he saw for a double. now he's two hits shy of #,000. ben zobrist lost out to paul kon konerko. the red sox were swings for the fences in boston. they hit back-to-back-to back homers in the seventh. indians down three in the ninth to the blue jays. they needed a home run. travis delivered. walk off grand slam. cleveland scored five in the ining to win it 5-4.

cubs rally from eight down to beat the nationals. barney completed the comeback with an rib single in the ninth. the cubs won it 10-9. the sports world lost two legends. dick williams passed away at the age of 82. he led the a's to back-to-back titles in the '80s. and john mackey died at the age of 69. soccer fans around the nation will watch the women's world cup this weekend when the usa plays brazil in the quarter finals. the under 17 world cup. mexico trailing 2-1. they tie it with a corner kick. they did just that. the ball untouched and into the net. one of the toughest goals to score. hooul owe gomez, a thing of beauty. a bicycle kick. injured his head yerler in the game. mexico put on a show and won it 3-2. have a great weekend. i'm fred roggin.

>> and now for another quick look at the weather, here's nbc meteorologist billy joe karins with the weather forecast. >> you notice how hot it was yesterday? >> i slept all day. no i didn't. >> you were in the a.c. you were smart. yesterday was 95 in d.c. on top of that we had humidity in the air. that was different from yesterday and the day before. today, another different story, not as much sunshine today. so the temperatures will be ha little lower. it's a very warm start. 79 already in d.c. and it's going to be a warm day. with all the clouds and showers around temperatures will be lower. anywhere in southern new england through the midatlantic, wel see showers and downpours. we have a few out there. they get more widespread as the day moves on. today tropical down powers. sunshine won't last for long. high temperatures in the 90s. only in the 80s in most locations. even in new england only in the 70s. much gloomier today.

welcome back to "first look." i'm veronica de la cruz. now nasa is saying good-bye to its space shuttle program. "atlantis" will embark on the final supply run to the space station this morning, weather permits. dan billow looks back at the iconic program's historic run. >> reporter: it was way back in 1978 that president jimmy carter showed off what was built to be an amazing machine. >> the shuttle has cleared the tower. john young of orlando and bob krippin seemed on their way to fulfilling the great promise when lifted off. the disapointments and the fatal accidents seemed to follow one after another. but the space shuttle slowly began proving itself. the shuttle's payload bay. it's impressive.
