under pressure. republican presidential candidates are in new hampshire gearing up for tonight's economic-themed debate. the latest polls show former massachusetts governor mitt romney out in front. nbc's tracy potts joins us from washington with more on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. each of these candidates has an agenda going into this debate tonight. mitt romney needs to maintain. herman cain needs to show why he's moving up. rick perry needs to prove he can survive. front runner mitt romney has a 37% lead in new hampshire, where tonight's debate is supposed to focus on the economy. >> government will spend whatever you give them and then some. my view is, hey, guys, let's not talk about taking more of the money of the american people. >> reporter: but questions about romney's mormon faith are likely

to surface tonight along with criticism of the health plan he created as governor of massachusetts. >> time and again, they've pointed to massachusetts as its model. >> reporter: romney's called rick perry light on immigration. that could come up tonight. perry's raising lots of money but sinking in the polls after a poor debate performance. >> this debate this week will be very important for rick perry to prove himself once again that he's in the top tier candidate status. >> reporter: herman cain will look to show why he's surging ahead. cain says he's ready for got-you questions and can't wait that talk about his 9% sales tax. >> it's really simple. when people understand it, they will support it, and they will demand it. >> reporter:. michele bachmann, john huntsman, rick santorum, and others will be looking to still prove they can win the nomination or even just stay in the race. on the other side today, president obama travels to

pittsburgh to tour a union training facility and to push his jobs plan there. lynn. >> all right, tracy. thanks so much. with protesters in new york showing no signs of letting up in their demonstrations against wall street and what they call corporate greed, they now plan to get a little personal. according to cranes new york business, protesters are planning a millionaires march. they'll head uptown, visiting the homes of some of new york's wealthiest. meanwhile, new york city mayor michael bloomberg has softened his stance on the demonstrators saying they can express themselv themselves as long as they stay within the law. a new poll shows 51% of americans have heard about the movement. 27% agree with its overall message. 19% disagree. last night on "the last word," lawrence asked former

louisiana governor and republican presidential candidate buddy roamer what he would say to fellow gop members who are denouncing the protesters. >> i would ask them to remember the times in our nation's history where young people stood and protested the status quo. i'm 68. i can remember the vietnam protest. i can remember the civil rights protest in the deep south. the young people made a difference. they weren't always right. they didn't always have a mature agenda, but they debated openly what the grown-ups wouldn't talk about. i'm hoping they'll talk about the fact that wall street money, special interest money owns washington, d.c. when you look at me, you think of a broom. i don't take pack money. i don't take super pack money. i don't take anything over $100, and i report every penny given.

that's what they're talking about, young people. they don't have jobs. they don't have hopes. these republican candidates would shut them up, would call them anti-american. it's not right. this is america. we have the obligation to debate who we are. >> well, lean forward with "the last word" 8 p.m. only on msnbc. here's a look at the other news going on. one california homeowner has a pricey repair job ahead of them. look at that. a massive tree fell on to their house causing $200,000 worth of damage. the tree also took out power lines. one person inside the home at the time was not hurt. what caused the tree to fall is still unknown. that's a big one. a sting operation to catch car thieves netted horrible results for arlington police in texas. a pickup truck used to bait

thieves wound up parked in a living room after a suspected thief drove it into a home. no one was injured, and police are still looking for the suspect. employees inside a pennsylvania cell phone store ran for their lives when a deer paid an afternoon visit. the young buck scared and confused spent over an hour inside the shop causing some damage to a bathroom and knocking over a monitor before just heading out the front door. and finally, in upstate new york, folk hs a smashing good time at the annual pumpkin drop. the gigantic gourd fell 50 feet, scattering prize tokens. spectators rushed in hoping to find the top prize, which was a $750 gas card. now for a look at your national weather, we turn to nbc meteorologist bill karens. that's just a technicality. >> well, $750 you think they'd be going quicker. >> maybe they didn't know that

lot of rain around atlanta, southern georgia, and north florida. now that's heading northward ever so slowly. you can see the rain along the coast. if you're in myrtle beach today, down to charleston and savannah, you're going to be ducking off rain. from raleigh to charlotte to atlanta, showers for you but not as concentrated. if you're toward the coast, it will definitely be a little bit worse. here's your forecast for your tuesday. as you head out today, you're dry from d.c. northwards. tomorrow is the day we'll see the rain. further to the south, once again showers and storms there. we're mostly dry in the midwest. the front is near st. louis. you have a slight chance of a shower or two. chicago, not bad. dallas looks okay along with san antonio. as i mentioned, liynn, unfortunately that rain in the deep south comes up the coast. >> thanks. also coming up, more promises from europe boost stocks. a banner day for the iphone. and netflix eats some crow. your first look at business

welcome back to "first look." i'm lynn berry. here are some of the top stories making news this morning. egypt's coptic church is accusing the government of turning a peaceful protest into clashes that killed 26 people. this was the worst sectarian violence since egypt's uprising six months ago. a new united nations report says suspected taliban fighters have been subjected to beatings, electric shock, and other forms of torture in some afghan-run detention centers. this is based on interviews with

300 suspects. the afghan government challenged the allegations but also pledged to investigate them. seven people who spent almost a day at sea after their boat capsized off florida's coast have now been rescued. the survivors, including a 4-year-old, suffered non-life threatening injuries. one woman is mising and presumed dead. and an american pressure hunting company says it's found the sunken wreckage of a second english ship full of silver. the vessel, which could contain up to $19 million in silver, was torpedoed by the germans in world war i. it's in the north atlantic about 100 miles from a world war ii ship. well, now here's your first look at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opens at 11,433 after surging 330 points yesterday.

the s&p climbed 39 points. the nasdaq went up 86. taking a look at overseas trading this morning. in noek ytokyo, the nikkei gain. what a difference a few days can make. after last week's close encounter with bear territory, markets made an impressive comeback. that rally continued in asia this morning where gains were driven by fresh optimism out of europe and news china bought out mainland banking shares to prop up its market. stocks surged after european leaders promised to come up with a solution to its debt crisis by the end of the month. that fueled the dow's biggest one-day gain in two months. alcoa jumped 4% ahead of its quarterly report. reports yahoo's founder may take the company private said it's shares are up 2%.

preorders for apple's iphone 4s topped one million on its first day out of the gate. meanwhile, sprint tumbled 3%. netflix finished 5% lower after initially rising on news it scrapped its disastrous plan to split dvd rentals and streaming. a spokesman for the new york stock exchange denied reports its website was disrupted twice yesterday. the hacking group anonymous had threatened an attack. elsewhere on the web, facebook has finally released that long awaited app for ipad users. and finally, the world's oldest automobile appears to be a solid investment. the steam-powered car built in 1884 fetched a record-setting $4.6 million at auction. it was last sold for about $3.5 million back in 2007. well, in health news this

morning, we have some more detail tail on a study we told you about yesterday that concludes women who take supplements appear to have slightly higher death rates. as nbc's erica edwards reports, it could cause many women to rethink about what they're taking. >> reporter: you really can have too much of a good thing according to a new study. researchers followed a group of nearly 40,000 white women in their 60s for about 20 years taking multi-vitamins and folic acid. it may be explained in part by ongoing health problems. some people take iron pills after major surgery. >> or they may have iron deficiency anemia associated with chronic diseases. >> reporter: vitamins were once taken to prevent diseases marked by deficiencies. as we boosted the nutrient con innocent our food supply, true vitamin deficiencies are pretty
