by investing $50 billion in rebuilding america's roads, bridges, and airports. not a single republican voted for the bill. backstabber joe lieberman and sellout ben nelson joined with the republicans to kill the bill. senate minority leader mitch mcconnell objected to the bill because it would put a new tax on america's richest 345,532 people. >> i'm sure that it is the case that most americans support raising taxes on high-income individuals. my guess is they might have a different view if they knew that 4 out of 5 of those individuals were actually business owners. nevertheless, it's time it seems to me for us to quit making the campaign speeches and remember the election is in november of '12, not this month of '11. >> so right in that sound bite mitch mcconnell what the american people want and then he

went on to tell the rest of his colleagues in the senate that the american people are stupid, that they don't know how many businesspeople are involved in this. i mean, give me a break. the gentleman from kentucky, if we have to call him that, is protecting job creators from a .7% tax on any income over a million dollars a year? i'll have more on this later at the board. senate majority leader harry reid hammered his good friend for sabotaging the president. >> my friend, the republican leader, comes before this body today and says we should do our campaign speeches next year. when the world knows that my friend has said his number one priority in this congress is to defeat president obama. >> yes, the world does know it. harry reid is spot on. washington democrats are finally speaking out against the republican mission to make president obama a one-termer. it shouldn't have taken this long, though. tea party senator jim demint, he laid out the playbook about

2 1/2 years ago. >> if we are able to stop obama on this, it will be his waterloo. it will break him. >> mitch mcconnell made this incredible statement one year ago tomorrow. >> our top political priority over the next two years should be to deny president obama a second term. >> so the president, as we all know, has never really played the victim. he's been on the offensive fighting for middle-class americans. he knows republicans are only hurting the american people. >> and when 72% of the american people support the ideas in this bill, 72% of americans agree with this, republicans, democrats, and independents, there's no excuse for 100% of washington republicans to say no. >> it's pretty basic stuff, isn't it? and it is crystal clear republicans hate president obama more than they care about the 99.8% of american people.

in chart is so telling. this is how many people would be affected by this increase. of course, the first million dollars is untouched. and then it's .7% after that. you know, 99.8% of the american people aren't going to be affected. the polls show the american people are with the president on this. but 100% of republicans have said no again. you know, the word "sabotage" has been an undercurrent of conversation in america about the righties, well, they're just trying to sabotage president obama sew won't get re-elected. sabotage is a hell of a word. let's see. google's definition is "deliberately destroy, damage or obstruct something, especially for political or military advantage." now, when i hear the word "sabotage," man, i'm thinking about war. i'm thinking about major confrontation. but of course political. now, do you think that the

republicans are helping the economy by saying no to everything? do you think that they are damaging the middle class by saying no to everything? and do you think that they are obstructing? well, the record shows it is a record amount of obstruction to this congress to the into the where we can hardly function as a government. and the will of the people is not being answered by the people that have been elected. this next election can't come fast enough. it can't motivate people enough to get out and do what they have to do in ohio and wisconsin because it is all connected. we are at an ideological cross-roads in this country. we have an income inequality in america that we have never seen before. i'm going to be throwing a chart up here every night for you to explain exactly who they are in very baasic terms and what they are doing to destroy our economy. destroy, sabotage, may i go so far as to suggest and flat out say that the republican party in

white house and said that the democrats want to win the white house more than they want to win the war on terror. so i thought i'd turn the tables tonight. and give them a little bit of their own medicine in the question. and i hope you that respond to it. joining me tonight is the chairman of the democratic congressional campaign committee, congressman steve israel of new york. congressman, good to have you with us tonight. >> hey, ed. >> you know, we're down to the basics. are republicans sabotaging the economy to hurt this president to make sure that he is a one-termer? what do you think? >> ed, they have laid off teachers. they have laid off cops. they have laid off firefighters. today every republican voted to lay off construction workers. all in the pursuit of laying off a president. it is a reckless political agenda. unwittingly or wittingly they are sabotaging the economy. and what really should make us angry is they are sabotaging the economy in order to protect their friends, in order to

protect their special interest buddies. they are willing to kick the middle class in the stomach in order to give a leg up to oil company executives, to protect corporate tax loopholes. so sabotaging the economy is one thing. but sabotaging the economy to enrich their special interest friends is even worse. >> 238 house republicans, and all 41 republican senators have signed grover norquist's pledge not to raise taxes. john boehner was asked about it today. >> speaker boehner, grover norquist was on the hill this morning. is he a positive influence on your conference? >> listen, our focus here is on jobs. we're doing everything we can to get the -- to get our economy moving and to get people back to work. it's not often i'm asked about some random person in america and what i think. >> is he a random person, though? to your conference is grover norquist a random person? >> listen, our focus is on creating jobs, not talking about somebody's personality. >> it's interesting boehner called norquist a random person. here are some of the pictures of

boehner sitting by norquist that were found on americans for tax reform website. if you take a look at the names of the random person's anti-tax pledge, you'll find speaker boehner's name right there. so i ask again, congressman, do republicans care more about a pledge than they do about the 99.8% of the american people? what do you think? >> they care more about their tea party politics. they care more about grover norquist. not a random person but a guy who has got the republican party lock, stock, and barrel. they care more about their own politics than they do about the middle class. if they really cared about the middle class, they have would have given us one vote on our measure to deny those -- that $40 billion in tax subsidies to the richest oil companies on earth. if they really cared, they wouldn't have tried to end medicare for senior citizens. they don't care. >> they just have a record of being anti-worker. and i'm not just talking about collective bargaining. i'm talking about infrastructure.

you know when you build a school, when you build a road, when you build a bridge, it's security for the american family. it's security for our american communities. they're against all of that. because they do not want to give this president any leg up at all politically or view him in a positive light that he got something accomplished. so will republicans' anti-american worker record, do you think this is going to help you take back the house next year? >> oh, absolutely. look, we need 25 seats to take the house back. and we have polling right now, we are running ahead in every single poll of the american people. do you want democrats running the house, or do you want this continued republican recklessness running the house? we're running ahead. we outraised the republicans by almost $4 million this year, and we're in the minority. and we've got 107 candidates, great recruits, running for congress. we can take this house back because of the buyer's remorse that's setting in across america. >> you know, these senators that are going home this weekend after this vote, they could go across their state. they would be hard pressed to

run into somebody that would be affected by this. of course unless they all hang out at the country club. then they might run into them. congressman steve israel, great to have you with us tonight. thanks so much for joining you. now let's turn to steve bennan. he is a blogger for the "washington monthly." steve, good to have you with us tonight. you have been covering this sabotage story for weeks. are democrats and the president finally catching on to this? >> i think that's right. i think that you look back over the last year, it's been a very provocative question. and understandably so. i mean, it speaks to motivation. it speaks to patriotism. and in general a lot of media outlets and a lot of democrats have been reluctant to go there. but i think in recent weeks we've seen that change. we've seen several members of the president's re-election team address the subject. we've seen several members of congress including harry reid and dick durbin raise the prospect of the sabotage question. and so it seems as if the democratic leadership is starting to take this question more seriously and pose it to the public in hopes of generating some debate.

>> today you reported on a suffolk university poll of florida voters. i found it very interesting. the poll shows that 49% of republicans are intentionally hurting the economy to make the president a one-termer. even 24% of republicans admit that their elected officials are sabotaging the president. and of course the number for the democrats is very high. some 70%. how do you read these numbers? >> really surprising. you think about it, it's such a provocative question. it seems as if most americans will be tempted to recoil at the very idea that republicans in such large numbers would put their own political interests above the needs of the country. so i haven't seen a lot of polling on this, but i expected the numbers to be a little bit more one-sided in the other direction. in this case we saw a poll here in a big state like florida where nearly half the state including 1 out of 4 republicans

herman cain, no appearances today publicly for the candidate. and it just seems to be getting worse for herman cain. there are new details about one of the women accusing the republican front-runner of sexual harassment. and one of the accusers wants to release a statement. gene robinson joining us with analysis, next.

one of the women accusing herman cain of sexual harassment. according to politico, herman cain made a suggestion that she felt was overtly sexual in nature and that she perceived her job was at risk if she didn't do it. she described it as an unwanted sexual advance. she left shortly after the incident with one year's salary, about $35,000. today politico reported the other woman received about $45,000 settlement. but nbc news has not yet confirmed this amount.

the national restaurant association said it will decide tomorrow whether to allow one of herman cain's accusers to issue a statement. so far the story isn't hurting herman cain at all in the pocketbook, fund-raising, or in the polls. the campaign has received more than $1 million in donations since sunday night. today kurt anderson, who now works for the perry camp, says he was not the source of the leak. >> and i didn't know about any of this stuff. and i didn't peddle it to any reporters. >> herman cain's campaign chief had strongly accused anderson yesterday, but today he backed off. >> until we get all the facts, you know, i'm just going to say that we accept what mr. anderson had said and we want to move on with the campaign. >> but the campaign is still blaming the perry camp. and there is more. back in march of this year in a conference call with conservative bloggers herman cain was asked directly if he had any skeletons in his closet.

>> so, no, i don't have any of those kind of skeletons in my closet. and what i have told people, if they come up with something to try to damage my reputation they will have made it up. >> and for those of you who are just now joining the herman cain saga slash story, karl rove is more than happy to sum it all up. >> it's been a bad week because he's had shifting stories. first this was a smear. thn he then he didn't know anything about it. and then he knew about something involving one person and now it turns out to be two and now we've got a third person coming forward. >> join meg now is eugene robinson, a pulitzer prize-winning columnist for the "washington post" and msnbc political analyst. always a pleasure to have you with us. >> great to be here. >> gene, why isn't somebody in his camp just grabbing him and shaking him and saying, dude, your story doesn't match up and it's only getting worse? this drip, drip, drip. i mean, how can it not be a problem for herman cain? your thoughts.

>> it could not have been handled worse. if you were to design a way to turn, you know, a disaster into an utter catastrophe, this would be the way. this is awful. i think the answer to your question, though, i don't think there is anybody in the campaign who has the sense to say look, the way you deal with this sort of thing is you get it all out and you make it a two or three-day story instead of a two or three-week story or more, which it's turning into. this is appalling in terms of political kind of tradecraft. >> i mean, what political expert who's ever worked on a campaign before would advise herman cain that this is really the way to handle it, just shift with the wind and say whatever happens and do as many interviews as you can? meantime, the campaign vehemently denies new -- denying new details about the first two accusers and the allegations of a third accuser.

stayed today herman cain told sean hannity it was an absolute fabrication. but does this strategy work now? going to right-wing radio and talking it up. what do you think? >> well, it might help him with his base, with those loyal supporters who are giving him all that money. but in terms of the rest of us, the rest of america, this makes no sense. there's nothing consistent here. he hasn't come out with any sort of version of events or version of facts that we can compare against what's been leaking out day by day. he just says, well, i don't remember, i didn't do it. you know, this is stuff that you or i would remember. okay? if we were accused of sexual harassment, we would remember it. for one reason, there's a personal liability that attaches in cases of sexual harassment. so it's not just the restaurant association that was potentially on the hook. it was cain himself who was potentially on the hook. this is the sort of thing that a manager pays a lot of attention to.

>> yeah. where's herman cain's family? we never see them. they're not out there campaigning for him. but i'll just relate it to my family. if i was out there telling stories like that shifting in the windy know my boys would say, dad, what the hell are you doing? i mean, somebody's got to be close to herman cain in one form or another that would connect with him and say all right, i want you to look at this tape, now i want you to look at this tape, now, you've got to get out and correct this thing. oddly enough, he continues to go up in the polls. what do you make of it? >> well, number one, for all we know, people may be telling him that and maybe he's just not listening. so maybe he's just that hardheaded. we don't know. what do i make of his surge in the polls? two things. one, there's a certain sort of flipping the finger at the republican establishment, at the liberal -- so-called liberal media, even though it's republican opponents who are

fanning these flames. but there's that sort of sentiment that i think motivates a lot of cain supporters and are prompting them to give money. the other thing is he's not mitt romney. right now he's the not mitt romney candidate. and the not mitt romney is always going to raise money because most republicans aren't ready to settle for him. >> actually, mitt romney can say i've flip-flopped a little bit but i haven't done as much as this guy is doing. now, the campaign says it's raising more money faster than ever. so what does that tell you about the republican party that you know, they're willing to turn a blind eye no matter what kind of accusation comes out. >> yeah. because of what cain says. his biography, he'd never held government office. doesn't know foreign leaders' names. there's a certain sort of anti-the -- the whole establishment. anybody who's been involved in government sentiment that's out there. and ithat is animating some of cain's supporters. i don't care what the guy did. i like what he says, i like the fact he's such an outsider i'm

going to give him some money. >> super pac supporting herman cain released a web ad today. here's part of it. >> now we're getting the high-tech lynching of a beautiful man, herman cain. >> what is known as the mainstream media goes for the ugliest racial stereotypes they can to attack a black conservative. >> well, obviously, that was limbaugh's voice. and they're calling it a high-tech lynching. they're playing the race card on this. what do you make of this? >> you know, what can i say? it's interesting that people like limbaugh, who always accuse the likes of me of playing the race card when i write about racism and its continuing presence in american society, are awfully quick to play that

piling up like cordwood in the senate. >> really? something's piling up? but it's not a republican jobs program. there are 15 bills republicans are calling jobs legislation. 10 of them are deregulation bills which do nothing to create jobs. the other five are all about drill, baby, drill, designed to put more money in the pockets of the oil executives. and by the way, the big five oil companies have already raked in more than $100 billion in profits in the first three quarters of this year. do they need a subsidy? so for tom price to say republicans have passed a jobs program when they have done nothing but block jobs bills and waste time on useless resolutions is ungodly psychotalk. ohio governor john kasich is trying to be a man of the people. but today he committed an unforgivable sin in the eyes of ohio sports fans. john boehner may pretend he doesn't know who grover norquist

is. but republicans can't hide from a report showing america's biggest corporations are paying zero taxes.

back to "the ed show." thanks for watching. the fight over ohio's union-busting law has reached, i guess you could say, the two-minute warning. and governor john castive just fumbled the ball. the polls show issue 2 headed for defeat next tuesday. today the governor thought he could win some cheap support by name dropping a hometown hero. when the columbus dispatch newspaper asked the governor if issue two could pull off a comeback victory, kasich said, "we never thought bernie kosar would bring back the browns -- bring the browns back and win that big championship game." well, governor, hold on a second now. you never thought it? that's because it never happened. there's not a single cleveland browns fan alive who would forgive john kasich for what he

just says. bernie kosar is still a fan favorite in ohio. but the former quarterback never won a championship with the cleveland browns. in fact, he led the team to three heartbreaking championship losses in the 1980s. cleveland fans, well, they're still not over that yet. kasich, you see, i don't blame the guy. i mean, he's trying to come across as a joe lunchpail, joy lunch bucket kind of guy. but the former lehman brothers manager and fox news host is about as blue collar as the queen of england. even kasich's spokesman acknowledges the governor's, well, not a very good -- blown play here. "every once in a while you hook one wide left." he should have put on there, no pun intended with left. but issue 2 supporters are still fighting despite kasich's blunder. the "washington post" reports, "right wing groups are pouring more than $2 million into tv ads in the final days." issue 2 opponents are responding with an ad featuring apollo astronaut and former united

states senator from ohio john glenn. >> here in ohio we don't turn our backs on those who watch ours. that's why i'm joining millions of ohioans who are voting no on issue 2. >> and of course "the ed show" will be live in ohio next week, monday and tuesday, bringing you the latest developments in the final vote on one of the biggest labor issues in this country. the results will have a lasting impact on workers in america. no doubt. joining me tonight, van jones, the president and co-founder of rebuildthedream.com, who is in columbus and working this issue with the folks. van, good to have you with us tonight. >> it's good to be here in ohio. we've got this pro-democracy movement breaking out all over the country. east coast, west coast. but this is ground zero right now, ohio. good to be here. >> what's the latest in ohio? what are you seeing on the ground? what's the conversation? >> unbelievable energy. you know, one of the things that we've been absorbing with this sort of occupy phenomenon is

creating a lot of energy, a lot of excitement. but is this energy going to actually translate into any power? ohio is where you're going to see this thing turn into power. i was just at a rally with young people and labor students and workers standing together. and people are serious. first of all, they understand this is the fight. the whole issue. did these republican governors, these tea party governors overreach? are they going to be punished at the ballot? or did they do the right thing? that gets decided here in ohio. now, listen, the polls are looking good right now. don't believe the polls. believe in the fight. everybody's got to come out. they know we are dumping millions of dollars possibly worth of ads this weekend. they're going to pull every dirty trick in the book. but i think you're going to see this movement go from energy, high energy, to showing some power. >> so van, do you think this last-minute money push from the pro-issue 2 forces really cause any concern?

i mean, is this going to go to the wire, do you think? >> this is going to come down to the wire. people cannot relax on this. what you have to understand, they are desperate now. they understand the message that gets sent when they lose on tuesday. if they lose on tuesday. shadowy forces are now coming into the state. i'm welcome here because rebuild the dream, we have 10,000 members here. we have 600,000 across the country. we're in every congressional district. so we've got 10,000 members here. but we've got people we don't know where this money is coming from and they're bringing it in by the boatload. they have got to stop this movement. their big fear is that all this energy's going to be turned into power here in ohio. and if that happens, it is game over for a lost these people that are republicans. >> do you get the sense on the ground talking to the folks that they actually know what this whole issue is about? i mean, that they can point to what are the sticking points and what has motivated the teachers, motivated the firefighters and the police officers, that they have really gotten the devil in the detail on this issue? >> absolutely.

and part of what's amazing, and the media can't cover all this stuff, is that level of depth and detail. people here are talking about the fact that nurses -- it would be illegal for nurses to get together and say hold on a second, the shift load is too great, we need to do something so that we don't hurt these patients. that would be illegal. so this is not just about the workers. this is about everybody in ohio being put at risk. the level of discussion, the workers have knowledge, they have wisdom. the bosses don't know everything that's going on. if the workers are silent, and it's literally illegal for them to talk about working conditions and try to make a change, that imperils everybody. so this goes deep, deep, deep for people. and again, you are going to see, i think, a big sea shift now because we said from the very beginning, and you called it, you said they are going to rue the day that they went after

playbook tonight. tea party republican paul ryan has repeatedly accused president obama of inciting class warfare. he was at it again this morning. >> i'm very concerned that his rhetorical shift has turned away from being a uniter toward more of a divider, preying on resentment and envi, talking -- pitting people against each other. and to me i just reject the premise of this view, that one person's gain must necessarily come at the expense of another person's loss. >> resentment and envy. you know what? you really think president obama as resentment in his heart? come on. except ryan wants to destroy medicare, medicaid, and social security in order to protect the top 1%. if he's worried about a man pitting people against people and person against person, maybe he ought to look in the mirror. that kind of tea party-infused resentment showed up at a meeting of campaign volunteers in massachusetts. senate candidate elizabeth warren was addressing the group

when she was interrupted by a tea party supporter. listen. >> i've been out of work since february of 2010. and i understand that you, according to several -- and i think i saw you on television taking credit for the occupy wall street movement. is that true? >> sir -- >> you want him to sit down? >> no, it's all right. >> let me say two things. i'm very sorry that you've been out of work. i'm also very sorry that the recent jobs bill that would have brought 22,000 jobs to massachusetts did not pass in the senate. [ applause ] >> i also want to say about occupy wall street, i've been protesting what's been going on on wall street for a very long time. it is an independent and organic movement.

they must, of course, obey the law like everybody else, but they have their own agenda. >> well, if you're the intellectual creator of that so-called party, you're a socialist whore. i don't want anything to do with you. your boss is a foreign-born -- >> so in case you missed it, yes, that guy just called elizabeth warren a socialist whore. warren later told the huffington post she actually feels sorry for the guy. here we go. michele bachmann was selling this tax system during a campaign speech in iowa today. >> my principles are very different. it's that first of all, everyone should pay something. now, that even differs with ronald reagan. >> everybody, right? bachmann wants everyone to pay some taxes. but right now even the lowest 47% pay between 30% and 40% of their yearly incomes in payroll taxes. it's the biggest corporations who pay nothing. a new study shows this. that 30 fortune 500 companies paid no federal income taxes between 2008 and 2010. in fact, they received tax credits. this corporate greed can be seen in places like -- well, there it is. fort smith, arkansas, where whirlpool began its plan to gut its workforce all the way back to 2003 under a republican president and a republican governor. huckabee, speak up to this. the job losses have cost the state more than $61 million. while whirlpool profits are up

124%. joining me tonight is congressman jim mcdermott of washington. congressman, good to have you with us tonight. >> good to be here, ed. >> democrats are losing the message war on this. or am i wrong on that? what can democrats do to convince people it's corporations who are not paying taxes, not low-income americans? >> ed, this is just another log on the fire for the occupy wall street people. everybody knows this thing's unfair. and when you have the republicans walking around on capitol hill saying we've got to reduce the taxes on business when the top 500 biggest companies in the country are paying less than 18% on average, they're not paying very much in taxes. and then you've got these 30 at the top who are paying absolutely nothing. in fact, they get money back. that is not true for everyone else in our country.

every individual. it is simply not fair, and it's not going to work. >> this is what john boehner said about the country's biggest anti-tax lobbyist, grover norquist. listen to this. >> speaker boehner, grover norquist was on the hill this morning. is he a positive influence on your conference? >> listen, our focus here is on jobs. we're doing everything we can to get the -- to get our economy moving and to get people back to work. it's not often i'm asked about some random person in america and what i think. >> is he a random person, though? to your conference is grover norquist a random person? >> listen, our focus is on creating jobs, not talking about somebody's personality. >> congressman, we all know that john boehner is connected at the hip to grover norquist. what are we seeing here? are we seeing the republicans starting to maybe fess up a little bit? how do you react when you hear that?

>> it just makes me laugh. when john boehner says that they're worried about jobs and they refuse to bring up the president's proposals to create jobs again and again. we now are five months into this bunch, and they have never brought -- excuse me. ten months into this bunch. and they have not yet brought a bill out that creates jobs. they are -- it's just nonsense. and for them to say we're going to give more money to the industries who are paying no taxes and that's going to create jobs, it is just nonsense. tax cuts do not create jobs. and i don't know when they're going to understand. people know that. >> congressman-s there a way to put pressure on republicans to break this anti-tax pledge that they've made with norquist? what do you think? >> i think the pressure's going to come from the streets, from the people in the occupy movement, who are going to -- as this thing builds toward this election and the foreclosures continue and the unemployment

benefits are not renewed and all of this comes out, you are going to see these guys running for life, trying to find something to create a job. you will see something happen from the republicans at the last minute because they'll be scared to death that they're going into the election and their platform is going to be i stopped everything. that is not a winning strategy. and they know it. they're going to get caught on it. >> unions like the united steel workers are trying to step in and save the whirlpool situation. that plant down in arkansas. they put out a release today saying that they want to meet with the higher-ups of the company. they're willing to negotiate. i don't know how far that's going to go. but what is happening in middle america, outsourcing of jobs, nobody seems to be doing anything about it. i know the democrats want to do something about it. you've had some provisions out there that have been voted on that the republicans have voted down. i mean, it's just -- it's really gut-wrenching to see what's
