3:01 pm
so i'm going to say it. i have been through hell. here's the good news. it didn't kill me or slow us down one bit. >> no, sir, it hasn't slowed him down a bit and hasn't stopped him from sticking his foot in his mouth again and again. >> did you hear the latest news today, anita hill is going to come -- >> is she going to endorse me? >> that's hilarious, mr. cain. the hermanator is finding humor in the fact that four women have accused him of harassment. we would like to give our thanks to several people who kept his week from hell from getting even worse. herman cain would like to give thanks to the conrad murray jurors for returning a verdict
3:02 pm
just hours after this. >> he suddenly reached over and he put his hand on my leg under my skirt and reached for my genitals. >> guilty is the verdict for dr. conrad murray. >> the jury has just reached a guilty verdict. >> dr. conrad murray was found guilty in the death of his patient, michael jackson. >> yes, instead of leading the news cycle with that sound byte, conrad murray leads the way. perhaps herman cain's deepest gratitude goes to rick perry and a moment frozen in time. a moment that in 53 incredibly awkward seconds made most people forget about cain's incredibly awkward press conference just a day before. governor perry's attempts at hume or on the subject were at least funny as were david letterman's. >> listen, you try concentrating with mitt romney smiling at you.
3:03 pm
that is one handsome dude. >> nice to see a guy running for president who is only groping for words, isn't it? >> all kidding aside, mr. perry's blunder gave a nice bit of cover on his own debate brain freeze. >> the legislation has already been written. hr 3000. in the previous it was hr 3400. we didn't hear about it in the previous congress because princess nancy sent it to committee and stayed there. it never came out. >> leave the jokes to mr. letterman. your mesogynistic quip to the first female speaker of the houz has no one laughing other than yourself. it's been a week of hell for mr. cane and he is still smiling. why? because of this. the latest cbs news poll shows
3:04 pm
the hermanator still on top with 18% of republican voters backing him. >> wow! winning! >> 18% is well below the 20s he has been scoring and who is that tied for second with mr. romney at 15%? it's the king of bling! newt gingrich. perhaps this is a week from hell for mr. cain and the cain train is slowly coming off the tracks. let's bring in our panel now. professor michael eric dyson of georgetown university and msnbc analyst and msnbc analyst and former dnc communications director, karen finney. after those sexual harassment accusations, one might have thought a sensible person would be more cautious, but in the debate, he denigrates the only female speaker of the house and yesterday made an incredible joke, i call it incredible about
3:05 pm
anita hill endorsing him. what is going on in this man's mind? >> now, the key word is sensible. we know that's not generally a word associated with mr. and his actions and behavior. clearly this is part of his whole attitude to make light and show that it's not stopping him. it's not slowing him down. in addition to the performance we saw earlier this week where it was all about blaming the victims and talking about himself in the third person. one thing they thought was interesting in that cbs poll, note he is losing support and losing support among republican women. i would imagine if this story continues along the lines we think it will, that number will continue to grow. >> professor dyson, despite what karen said, 61% of republican voters say the allegations levelled against herman cain won't make a difference about whether they support him. he raised almost $10 million in
3:06 pm
october. are we to assume that mesogynistic behavior, accusations of sexual harassment don't matter to the electorate? >> not to the people who support mr. cain. i don't think if we can draw a general conclusion, but within republican party elite circles and the grass roots that the concern about sexism and patriarchy pale in comparison to cain's ability to lead the pack and make light of and humor of serious issues. not only does he think conrad murray, but joe paterno for taking him off of the front pages. what he is engaging in are allegations of the utmost gravity and he ought to be more sincere for apologizing or acknowledging the seriousness of the charges alleged against him. >> i remember you making comments about anita hill and treating that with a most serious gravity that you could possibly summon.
3:07 pm
there he is making a joke about her endorsing him. >> nothing is in poorer taste than that. we have the self referencing of himself in the third person. cain doesn't say this. beyond that, to talk about anita hill whose 25th anniversary of her engagement with clarence thomas, this is not only in poor taste, but poking fun. american women ought to be insulted. >> it's also i think that's right, but remember it is also undermining the seriousness of what we are talking about. all day we saw reports about little and high school kids, kissed are feeling the pressure of sexual harassment. he should at least as a leader, if he wants to be a leader be conscious of the fact that kids are watching and talk about women and the seriousness and we
3:08 pm
know for example from the joe paterno case and victims don't want to come forward. to undermine the seriousness, it is pretty stunning. hopefully on saturday night's debate which is supposed to be on foreign policy, we will get back to the things you have been talking about, u becky becky becky stan. >> cane is here and the tea party darling raising money at the russian tea room and our valu valued. >> i want to get back on message. that's not on message. i'm back on message. i want to fix this economy. so people can go back to work. not continue this stuff that does not matter. >> your polls are still up, do you think your message is working? >> yes, i do. >> he said his message is working. his support is starting to erode as you say especially among women.
3:09 pm
do you think we will see it drop even further as the reality of herman cain begins to sink into the minds of conservative voters? >> absolutely. i like to believe and i could be wrong, but i like to believe the reason that these claims don't bother people is they don't see him as a serious candidate anyway. they dismiss him anyway. certainly i think when we get back to talking about foreign policy and national security, for example, in this debate on saturday night, we will get even more evidence as to why this is not somebody we should take seriously as a potential president of this country. he doesn't even know who has nuclear weapons and who doesn't. >> indeed. professor, i read something that suggested he could win in iowa based entirely on conservative male voters. is that possible? >> it absolutely is. i will not under estimate herman cain because it's not so much herman who seems to have taken 9-9-9 and borrowed the german

the investigation into a child sex abuse scandal may be moving beyond the borders in pennsylvania. a town in texas is looking into whether jerry sandusky sexually assaulted a boy on a train trip
3:15 pm
in 1999. sandusky is facing 40 charges including the sexual abuse of young boys over a period of 15 years. for more on this, i am joined by an investigative correspondent in windy pennsylvania. >> good afternoon. >> this story is moving by the day. doesn't it reveal that large institutions, the powerful, the huge, when they get to this size, they can actually get away with anything for years. doesn't matter in wall street or penn state. it's the same thing. >> well, look. it's absolutely true that the power and aura of the penn state football program, the importance of it almost certainly played a role in how these allegations were handled. that the idea of doing anything that would tarnish the
3:16 pm
reputation of the football program was probably a major inhibiting factor on the part of universal officials in not acting more vigorously when they got that report in 2002 about mr. sandusky's conduct. you know, we are also seeing the power of public disclosure here. when the facts come out and they are laid out in front of the public, even major institutions like this one have to react and to have both coach paterno fire and the university president fired in response to this is a testament to that. >> this story or investigation about it spreading to another state, does that raise this to the level of a federal charge? >> conceivably, but this is not -- >> i'm thinking of a violation.
3:17 pm
i think of it violating the man act. >> right. right now we have one allegation relating to that texas incident that could factor into that. but it's also important to remember that this is an ongoing investigation and state officials stressed to me and the police officials stressed yesterday that they're getting continuing reports of new information and they're sinking information from the public about others that may have information about other instances related to this. they are getting that. until we have the full picture, we don't know whether it's going to extend beyond the borders of pennsylvania or not. right now we did have that one instance in texas that is being investigated as well, but i have not seen evidence that the feds have moved in except in the matter involving the department of education.
3:18 pm
that did make clear this week that it is investigating whether penn state broke the law in not reporting those 2002 allegations. >> finally and if can e i can ask briefly. joe paterno reached out to a prominent washington criminal defense lawyer to represent him. he hasn't been charged with any offenses. why would he do that? >> first of all, there ongoing legal proceedings in which he will be a key witness in any trial of any of the three people charged this week. joe paterno will be front and center in giving testimony in those trials. he is going to need legal council for that. there ongoing investigations that could relate to him. right now he has been described as a cooperating witness and not a subject or target of the investigations. i think more importantly, there is the prospect of massive civil suits in this from the victims
3:19 pm
and their families. we have seen that in every prior instance of sexual abuse cases and catholic church and think there is every expectations that there will be civil suits and joe can be a defendant in the lawsuits. >> the remarkable developing story. nbc's correspondent, thank you very much. we are expecting a press conference from rodney erickson, the interim penn state president and we will bring that to you when it happens. when we come back, two of america's bravest young men. stay with us.

goals are? >> charley's fund was formed in 2005, shortly after my son, charley, was diagnosed with duchen duchenne, when he was 3 1/2 years old. and we have one simple goal, to develop treatments for the disease, to give him a long and healthy life, along with the thousands of other kids along the world who are struck by duchenne. >> and do you think that that is now on the horizon? that there may be some kind of treatment that will maybe slow down the progression of the disease? >> i absolutely know it's here. this is the time. the cause of the disease was discovered in 1987. so an abundance of information is known about duchenne. we know exactly what causes it. we are now at the this age where we're not searching for a cure. we're developing drugs that will treat the disease. and when charley was diagnosed, there was not one human clinical trial for a promising medication. and today there are five medicines in human clinical
