ticking clock. troubling signals overnight from the congressional super committee charged with cutting $1.2 trillion from the nation's budget. there's only one week left before severe mandatory cuts kick in if they don't come to an agreement. secretary panetta saying those would result in the u.s. armed forces becoming a paper tiger. tracie potts has the details live for us this morning. it looks like gimmicks are the big talk. >> reporter: well, you know, you were talking about the defense department. actually half of those cuts, if those automatic cuts kick in, would come from the defense department. that's why they're concerned. democrats and republicans with the same arguments. at this point majority leader harry reid on the democrat side, the senate side, is saying doesn't look like much compromise here. democrats with the same argument from last spring. republicans fear bringing in more revenue is a code word for raising tacks. they want to lower tax rates and

cut into medicare and medicaid. the super committee is tasked with finding $1.2 trillion to cut. they only got a week left to do it. both sides say they're working hard. they can't afford failure but they've yet to come up with some sort of agreement. the committee itself has not worked as a whole in two weeks, but lots of talks going on behind closed doors. leaders on the republican, democrat and house side say if, in fact, this committee comes up with a deal, john boehner, the house speaker, says he will make sure it gets pushed through on his side. >> deja vu that we hope works out for us. tracie potts, thank you. occupy wall street protesters in new york allowed back into lower manhattan's zuccotti part, a day after they were cleared out. occupiers returning to the birthplace of the movement were allowed to bring only a small

bag with them. tents and camping gear of any kind prohibited after a judge ruled that demonstrators have the right to protest in but not occupy the park due to health and safety risks. seattle cops pepper sprayed a group of protesters marching in solidarity with occupy wall street yesterday. at least four people were arrested in that. last night rachel maddow asked robert reich to describe the mood as a large occupy protest got underway on campus. >> on campus there's a mood of restlessness and uncertainty. a lot of people don't know if the police are coming back in. there's a nervousness but also a sense of indignation about what happened last week and righteousness with regard to the purpose and history of the free speech movement here. you know, rachel, the irony of all of this is not only mario savio, it is that right now we

are at a time when the supreme court has said money is speech. speech is money and corporations are people. we've turned the first amendment on its head. instead of allowing people to peaceably assemble and express outrage at how much money is going into politics, we have mayors and other officials all over the country saying you can't assemble, you can't express yourself, but we are going to listen to the money from the big corporations that now are basically engulfing american politics. >> be sure to watch "the rachel maddow show" weeknights at 9:00 p.m. eastern. he stopped it, so says mike mcqueary in an e-mail obtained. mcqueary said he allegedly sandusky sodomize a boy in a shower but did not let it continue before he went to

police. that conflicts his grand jury testimony where he says he did not specifically say he stopped the act or go to police. the new york times is reporting that former head coach joe paterno, recently fired over the scandal, transferred full ownership of his $600,000 home to his wife for $1 back in july. his attorney said the transaction was part of the couple's ongoing estate planning and was not tied to the scandal. president obama is in australia this morning where just hours ago he and the australian prime minister introduced a joint security pact that would increase u.s. military presence there. next year, about 250 marine also begin a rotation over northern australia which over the next couple of years would reach a full force of 2,500 personnel. addressing concerns over china's monetary policy, the president maintained china needs to accept responsibilities of becoming a world power and play by the

rules of the road. here's your "first look" at some other news going on around america. surveillance camera footage showing the eruption of a massive fireball inside an alleged mobile meth lab. the blast i sinside a tennessee hospital parking lot killed one man. the charred remainings of all the makings of drug factory on wheels were found inside. a brazen auto thief almost killed a car salesman driving off the lot. the salesman suffered broken ribs, but police arrested the suspect after he abandoned the car. fears of an earthquake spread after a two-train collision in topeka, kansas. in all 32 cars derailed and over 600 feet of track needed to be replaced. and the world's bravest have arrived in myrtle beach. hundreds of firefighters from

the united states and abroad are in town for the annual firefighter combat challenge. dressed in full gear, these participants compete in a variety of events that showcase their talent that is used to save lives around the world. we turn to bill karins now for the weather channel forecast. i'm hoping it's another good day of good weather. >> no. the ride sending. welcome to "first look," early for you. usually you have the cozy 10:00. >> can you tell my eyes are barely open now? >> yes, toothpicks and caffeine. we have a weather threat this morning. if you're waking up in louisiana, mississippi, alabama, north georgia and the carolinas, that's where we will have the strongest thunderstorms today. just had a report of a tornado in louisiana, knocked some trees down over the interstate but no damage to homes or structures. that's the threat this morning, along interstate 59 is where the storms will be heading a half hour from now. we have storms approaching new

orleans and also tornado warnings here along the border of louisiana and mississippi. a couple hours from now, this threat will shift more into areas of alabama including tuscaloosa and heading up to birmingham. that's a dynamic storm system for november. that will continue through the southeast today. eventually this big shield of rain is going to slide through the mid-atlantic and up through southern new england. if you're on the eastern seaboard today, there's a good chance you will need that umbrella today with the storm system clearing through. cold air moving through the northern plains. we are finally returning to a normal weather pattern. we've been way, way too warm this november. this big shot of cold air will kind of return things to where we should be. kentucky, second morning in a row you're waking up to heavy rain. even nashville had some heavy rain will go through. from louisville to cincinnati, lexington and eventually going through virginia, that rain is heading your way. as far as the cold air goes, get

look." i'm richard lui. here's some of the top stories making news for you this morning. the secret service says a bullet hit an exterior window of the white house while an additional round of ammunition was also found on the exterior of the white house. this follows reports friday of gunfire near the white house. the u.s. park service believes the shots were fired from a passing car that was later found seven blocks away. authorities are searching for a 21-year-old man connected with the vehicle. a wave of violence has left as many as 90 people dead across syria in a single day. activists say suspected army defectors gunned down nearly three dozen soldiers and security force members in an ambush on monday. the subject of syria sparked a melee between two political rivals on a lebanese talk show. watch this. the men hurling insults, throwing a glass of water and then holding up a chair before the host intervened in all that. that made for good tv. a russian soyuz capsule carrying an american and two russians successfully docked with the international space station this morning.

the new crew will begin a four-month stay aboard the floating lab. the associated press reports long lost air force one recordings made in the aftermath of john f. kennedy's assassination have been found and are up for sale. the two plus hour recordings come from the estate of a former kennedy aide and are going for $500,000. now, here's your "first look" at how wall street will be kicking off the day. the dow opens at 12,096 after adding 17 points and change yesterday. the s&p was up 6 points. the nasdaq gained 28. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo the nikkei fell 78 points while in hong kong, the hang seng dropped 387. good news from italy and here at home had wall street on the upside of its recent seesaw run tuesday. with italy racing to avoid financial crisis, prime minister designate mario monti is expected to finish forming a government in what by normal italian standards is almost lightning speed. still with italian benchmark

bond yields once again closing above the critical 7% level and spanish and french yields also higher, euro worries could drive wall street through more ups and downs this week. look for that. here at home, retail sales rose for a fifth straight month on more spending than expected. more proof the economy may be gaining steam, new york state manufacturing rose for the first time since may. tech stocks led with hewlett-packard pacing the dow. intel rose a day after warren buffett revealed he bought a stake in the campaign, something like $10 billion. apple was up for only the second day in the last eight, after the bell, apple pointed disney chief bob igor to its board. in earnings, after nine consecutive quarters of declining, walmart reported a revenue gain. staples dropped on short sales and a lowered full-year forecast. department store saks rose on stronger sales. and after the bell, despite a jump in profit, dell sank after

country giving number 11 kansas more than they could handle. game tied at the half and then wildcats jumped all over the jayhawks. built a 17-point lead and didn't look back. they cruise 75-65. another great match-up, number three, ohio state, eighth ranked florida. the gators have never beaten a top three team on the road. it wasn't going to happen last night. william buford scored game high 21. big ten freshman of the year jarod sullinger chipped in with 16. buckeyes won it 81-74. baseball, as expected justin verlander unanimous winner of the a.l. cy young award leading the majors in strikeouts and wins with 24-5. hockey bragging rights in new york. rangers and islanders. sean avery a pest around the net, got his own rebound and scored his second goal in as many games. to the third, islanders turned it over and brad richards made them pay for their mistake. unleashed a rocket. rangers on fire winning their seventh in a row 4-2. speaking of streaks, after a dismal start to the season, bruins have now won six straight.

benoit pouliot scored in the third and the champs have got their swagger back winning 4-3. that's your "first look" at sports. i'm fred roggin. for another check of the weather, here is bill karins. >> the run is over, for everyone on the mid-atlantic to the northeast, an incredible stretch of mild conditions and it's coming to an end. temperatures are cooler this morning, it's still mild, but the colder air is on the way along with the rain. i have one confirmed tornado in the last couple of hours in southern portions of mississippi and northern louisiana. we have numerous tornado warnings in that area. joining us in eastern portions of louisiana, southern mississippi, those are the ones that are at the greatest risk dealing with strong storms and possible tornadoes early today. i mentioned it's mild. not in the 60s like yesterday morning, but still in the 50s, which is where highs should be
