freddie mac. by the way, we have to remember, former members of congress, some of them when they don't want to be a registered lobbyist they just sign tonight -- on to advise so they can claim they have never lobbied. i will be curious to see how he handles it. in the meantime let's turn to our friend mr. cain. he found himself trying to brush off the libya pregnant pause which, by the way, has gotten attention on the australian morning shows here. was used as sort of a butt of jokes down here in the abc australian broadcasting morning show. he's also having to brush off what was supposedly serious response about kissinger.
9:05 am
here is what he said. >> dr. kissinger turned my offer down being secretary of state. he said he's perfectly happy doing what he's doing. >> you asked the doctor to be your secretary of state. >> i was not serious about asking him. i know he's retired. >> cain claims he was joking, but as you saw as we butted those things together, chris, he didn't sound like a man who was joking the first time. >> no. >> i think it just goes to the problems cain was having on the credibility front. again, i still think the libya thing is almost a disqualifying event. in fact, i would argue it is a disqualifying event when it comes to making the case that you're ready to be command in chief and then having this curfuffle follow. one other thing, chris, a new bloomberg poll in new hampshire.

we're going to have a permanent presence of u.s. troops now in australia. in the a permanent u.s. base like korea. you're going to see more of this tomorrow. but all of it is about -- it fits the whole theme, this idea that every move we're making both militarily and economically in the asian pacific region is about confronting china. in fact, the president was asked specifically about this at the joint press conference. here is what he said. >> china is playing by these rules, recognizing its new role. i think this is a win/win situation. there are going to be times where they're not and we will send a clear message to them that we think that they need be on track in terms of accepting the rules and responsibles that come with being a world power.
9:08 am
>> later today, your time tomorrow, our time, the president's going to do a speech before the australian parliament. one of the things he's going to make, one of the goals is to make sure he says the asian pacific region knows that the united states is an asian pacific power. again, a little bit of that subtle counterbalance, counterweight to china, crust. >> chuck todd, literally the hardest working man in television news. we'll hear more from you later as it gets later and later in the night. thanks for reporting. we'll see you in a few minutes. >> you got it, buddy. the calendar says the congrengsco congressional committee has a week. >> how are you, sir. >> i'm good. >> we're a week away. the stress level comes up.

where are we today. i know this is a changing story but where are we today and what do we expect today. >> it changes every minute, chris. the interesting thing that's developed in the last 24 hours is we're having the first public dispute sort of coming from the gop and democratic side. last night on cnbc, really came out to democrats chastising them for not wanting to do anything with medicaid. >> the democrats won't put a plan on the table to solve the problem of anything they do. they are insisting upon a trillion dollar tax increase in the worst economy since the great depression. it's not going to happen.
9:10 am
>> they want to have some serious cuts and medicare and future spending in that regard. >> largely capping some tax loopholes. >> this is not raising taxes. >> no. it takes down the top rate from where it is to around 8%. >> right. >> the reason why democrats say that is redik louse because that is not nearly enough revenue. they want a trillion dollars in revenue before they touch anything in regards to health care. the gop will not go there. the interesting caveat in this, the plan that a lot of gop leadership is starting to gather, a guy that has pristine credentials, there is now a letter in the house gop circulating say no, we can't do his plan because of $300 billion in revenue. shows you how difficult of a time they would have putting anything through the house that has any revenue.

9:12 am
the nypd has set up a barricade making sure any new protesters do not bring tens or sleeping bags. many protesters have decided not to stick it out here. instead they went to local shelters and a church that opened up their doors and served food we even saw one protester sleeping in a sleeping bag on the sidewalk. all this unfolding after the mayor decided last night with little notice to tear down this tent city for what he sited safety concerns. the judge later sited with the city saying protesters have the right to protest but that doesn't necessarily include tents and sleeping bags. protesters say they are planning for their two month anniversary tomorrow to take to the streets at 7:00 o'clock. they hope to shut down wall street. they will then head into the subways. chris, back to you. >> thanks, jonathan. ahead, we'll go back to the

let's bring back our panel. we ended on romney versus obama. but, ruth, there's always more to say about newt and you have more to say about newt gingrich. >> jeff made the point that newt has been the beneficiary of the flubs so far. he comes off as a substantive, serious person, to which i say, yes. but as more attention is paid to him, his problem is not lack of knowledge. it's lack of discipline. and he's apt to say something that will get him in trouble.

and even if he doesn't, the stories about his background and in particular the stories about the massive amount of money, $1.6 million that he was paid by freddie mac are going to be particularly problematic. which gets us back to romney/obama. >> i would say this is someone with a 40-year record in public life and lots of statements that could be picked through. but we were struck -- we're always monitoring the twitter universe.ç you tweeted yesterday, doing "the daily rundown" on msnbc tomorrow a.m., see if i can link the iowa caucuses to the nba lockout, go. >> i can't. i was suggesting that much of the analysis or what passes for analysis in politics strikes me, if i may channel gingrich as stunningly strange.

the fundamental point is this -- these polls that eat up the cable news, you want to talk about get a life. on "saturday night live" years ago it was said, in a recent poll, 80% of americans said if the presidential election were held today, they would really be surprised. and that's a template. this indicates not much. and i think we even know mathematically -- this is your field. you take presidential polls a year out. and you're not learning very much, at least in my view. but sharks have to swim, bats have to fly -- >> a blogger's got to blog. i do want to mention duke basketball, john bailey, former producer on this show, duke graduate. yes, mike krzyzewski broke the

judge silverman is very conservative. >> jeff? >> i will be at the smithsonian giving a talk about my widely praised book. >> very shameless. >> i'm wildly praising it. thank you all. that's it for this edition of "the daily rundown." we'll see you right back here tomorrow. coming up next on msnbc is "jansing & co." and then at 11:00, it's thomas roberts. and andrea mitchell is the 1:00 p.m. have a great day. small businesses in austin, texas, are thinking local. maintenance arnold runsç greenling which distributes baked goods. they're championing the buy local movement and helping the
