2:01 pm
>> i'm craig melvin in for tamron hall. the full out from the collapse of the super committee on this tuesday. a short time ago at a high school in new hampshire, president obama urges congress to do the right thing on the deficit and his jobs bill. they said next week lawmakers have a chance to vote on extending the tax cut and warned if republicans voted down, the average american family would see their tax guess up. >> the question we will have to answer when we get back from thanksgiving is this. are they willing to raise taxes on the middle class just to play politics? >> we have team coverage on the developments in washington. kristen welker is at the white house and luke russert and our democratic candidate from south carolina. kristen, the protesters booing the president, do we know who
2:02 pm
they were? >> we do. they were basically occupy wall street protesters. it was difficult to hear what they were saying. they were saying mr. obama, 4,000 peaceful protesters have been protested while they destroy the economy. we have audio of it. let's play that and i will talk to you on the other side. take a listen. >> i appreciate you making your point. let me make mine, all right? i will listen to you and you listen to me.ç >> so the president there saying okay, i heard you and now let me make my point. he tried to empathize with the occupy wall street protesters, but he was there in new hampshire and politically important state.
2:03 pm
not only the first republican primary state, but an important battle ground state. president obama won the state back in 2008 and right now polls show him about ten points behind mitt romney in a matchup. mitt romney by the way according to the latest polls is letting his republican challengers in hypothetical primary matchups. he is taking that chance to lash out at president obama. he released a number of ads and newspapers today, slapping president obama for economic record and released a commercial hammering president obama on his economic record. president obama of course knows that state is important. he is there and likely we will see him in new hampshire several more times over the coming months. >> kristen welker, thank you. more now on what's next after the failure of the deficit reduction. the super committee. luke russert joining me now from
2:04 pm
washington, d.c. house speaker john boehner issued a statement in response to the president's remarks today. what did speaker boehner have to say? >> good afternoon. what you are seeing now is due to the failure of the super committee, you will see a pivot on capitol hill to very important legislation that needs to be figured out by the end of the year. that is an extension of the payroll tax holiday that you heard president obama talking about and an extension of unemployment benefits. all things that are essential of keeping theç economy afloat an moving forward. on the issue of the payroll tax, speaker boehner had this to say. we told the president in september we stand rate to have an honest and fruitful discussion with him regarding the invitevation and that stands. the american people continue to await action on the jobs bills passed that are stuck in the democratic-controlled senate with one statement he could dislodge the jobs bills and make sure they are brut to a vote.
2:05 pm
i hope he will put the country before the party and vote immediately after thanksgiving. that necessarily won't happen because harry reid, the democrat who controls the senate and a lot of the democrats are not bipartisan and they have been in the past with democrats and they have taken a couple of things they don't agree with. the bottom line is december is going to be a very busy month. unemployment benefits that a lot of folks including a lot of bipartisan economists allow the economy to keep growing because people spend that money and go to the grocery store and the gas station. the payroll tax is 2% on middle class families and there is a fear on most of the democratic side that they lose that 2% and it could hurt the economy. those are things they want and republicans see them as adding $300 billion to the deficit and you will have to see my guess as

2:07 pm
what we did with the control act. we cut over $17 billion and all cuts. we knew with these various documents we had and the bowles simpson document. all of those things contained a combination of things we should do to make smart cuts and also increase revenue. you never can get the will. >> i want to follow-up on something. you talked about political will. time and time again, people in the country, republicans and democrats looked at washington and they have shaken their head in disgust. whether it's the brink of default or the brink of shut down. we had 12 congress men who had several months to come up with a deal and we got nothing. >> you may recall these things have been going on for sometime.
2:08 pm
535 congress people couldn't come up with anything. the president and the speaker of theç house working very closel could not quite get it all done. in fact they walked away. we had the biden group. and the republicans, eric kantor walked away from that. we had the documents and the way was very clear. they did not have the political will to stand up to grover norquist or whoever else may be saying we ought to do this with all cuts and revenue. no economist i talked to said this could be done in a meaning i ful way and not have revenue. they didn't have the will. >> a growing course of scent iblgs claim that the white house never really wanted to see this thing succeed in the first place
2:09 pm
because the president wanted to be able to run against a do nothing congress. the critics said the president should have swooped in and tried to save this thing in the 11th hour. had president obama been more engaged do you think we might have seen an 11th hour deal? >> absolutely not. i think they wanted to make president obama the issue. some people wanted him to step in so that they can once again walk away from him as a speaker did sometime ago. i think the president did exactly what he should have done. the biden group was his creation and the simpson bowles was his creation. he sat down with speaker boehner and how long, i don't remember. a great amount of time. all of that was the president's involvement. to say that he could have stepped in at the 11th hour and saved this deal, absolutely notç they wanted to make him the

michael smerconish is an msnbc contributor and mark murray who is a political director. tonight's debate in d.c., let's look at two polls. newt gingrich i few months ago in single digits and right now in this new poll he's at 26%. mitt romney behind at 22%. in another poll, newt gingrich also on top at 24% to mitt romney's 20%. newt gingrich the front-runner in two polls. is he going to be the pi nata in d.c.? >> this is the first where newt gingrich has been the national front-runner with mitt romney. that's a dynamic we will be able to watch. one of the things that has gone on is a new flavor of the month has come about whether michele bachmann or rick perry or herman cain has come with scrutiny.

attempting to use his race as an advantage here in iowa. any chance something like this works for herman in the hawk eye state? >> i doubt it and i don't think it's truthful. his status as a republican is a bigger factor than skin color and playing a role in the out come of this election. the president enjoys tremendous support among african-americans and all of the polling data i have seen thus far, that is bedrock. he continues to hold that support. i think his number fading and newt gingrich being the flavor of the month is more about mitt romney than any of these individuals. craig, what i see is this support like a wave going from all of these candidates from bachman to perry to and now to newt. each time they are rejecting mitt romney. each time they find a new candidate, they say no to mitt. >> we have seen dozens of polls and mittç romney consistently
